[Bug 161962] Xubuntu works terrible on a PIII 1GHz 128MB ram

2007-11-11 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

I installed Xubuntu Gutsy with alternative CD. And after an hour long
installation I was finally at the desktop. But I couldn't do anything
since the HDD was constantly working. Just to open the Start Menu I had
to wait for a minute and the mouse was jerky.

So then I reinstalled Xubuntu by using the Server option and after the
base was installed I just install XFCE, XORG, FIREFOX, ABIWORD, GNUMERIC
with APTITUDE. Now Xubuntu works better than before. But once I open up
FIREFOX or any other program it starts to growl again.

clean boot with only XFCE terminal opened

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ free -m
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 114111 2 0 0 17
-/+ buffers/cache: 94 20
Swap: 14

clean boot with firefox and XFCE terminal opened
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ free -m

Mem: 114112 2 0 0 20
-/+ buffers/cache: 92 22
Swap: 149 32116

I thought 128MB ram is enough for normal work in XFCE I guess this is not true.
I mean even WinXP which was 3years old and full of software worked much better
on this lappy.

[Bug 160967] Re: Genius WizardPen worked in Feisty but not Gutsy

2007-11-11 Thread Justin
In Feisty even the pressure for the Genius Wizard pen worked perfectly on my
PC.
I've also got a major problem with the modem (vodafone huawei E220) not being
detected most of the time in Gutsy and I had not such problem in Feisty (Ubuntu
Ultimate 1.4 using gnome ppp dialer program). I'll probably have to switch back
to Ubuntu Ultimate based on Feisty. Especially since there are a couple of
problems with compiz flickering to a black screen on and off when viewing
images/jpeg files in full screen mode as well as other problems.

I've have mostly bad experiences with upgrading to new major versions

software because there not available in the repository.

Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution (I think), yet I have to live
with old outdated packages.
It's like I am second-class citizen or something.

I opened Synaptic, and Wine is 0.9.46 but on Wine website, latest is 0.9.49.
I have Firefox 2.0.0.8 on official website, but latest is 2.0.0.9 but its not

2007-11-11 Thread Maxime Doyen
Ok, when I use your preference file i have pango error message teling me anbout
invalid UTF8.
It seems to come from the grouping char.

What character have you set for grouping char ? It seems to be a space, but
pango tell me it is \xe ?
Maybe it is because this widget can only contain 1 char and you have tried
topaste a more complex utf8 char.

Please try to change this grouping char in HB preferences by a single
space, and the things will display right.

[Bug 158166] Re: Samsung HM160JI sata hdd no devices detected

2007-11-11 Thread macat
Hooray!

I accomplished the task...but this is not the final solution.

The Way:

 1. Boot with Knoppix
 2. With GParted delete all partition, and create: 1 swap, 1 ext3, 1 ntfs
 3. Install Ubuntu to ext3 partition
 4. Plugin the old drive to USB (with Sata - USB Converter, external drive)
 5. Boot old OSX system from the old drive... it is slow, because USB isn't
very fast...
 6. With Apple's Disk Utility, format the 3rd partition to hfs+
 7. With Carbon Copy Cloner clone the system into the new partition
 8. Reboot, unplug the old drive, and the Refit is working without intervention

OK, but I don't have EFI partition, so I lose the firmware upgrade
chance.

[Bug 146946] Re: [gutsy] Gnome settings daemon does randomly not work

2007-11-11 Thread Martin Soto
I was having this problem consistently after rebooting. My first login
attempt after a reboot would always fail with the the dreaded There was
an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon message box. Logging out
and logging in again always solved the problem, but it was quite
annoying anyway.

The good news is, I managed to work around the problem by deleting
(renaming actually) my ~/.gnome2/session file. This would point to
gnome-session as the actual culprit in this case, instead of the real-
time kernel. The kernel, however, may still have something to do,
because this problem is most probably caused by a race condition during
session startup (the fact that it is intermittent, as well as the fact
that it didn't affect me on a second login with a warm cache, both
suggest it.) A different scheduler will potentially affect process
execution order during session startup, and may increase/decrease the
chances of this race condition actually triggering.

If you are having this problem, could you please try renaming/deleting
your session file and report here your results?

Some additional info about my setup: I'm running a Gutsy installation
(upgraded recently from Feisty.) I use the real-time kernel from Gutsy,
but this problem didn't start when I installed it. The problem was
apparently caused by me fiddling with my desktop configuration: I was
playing with Awn and changed my panel and theme configuration many times
in a few days.

[Bug 147632] Re: Uable to put my mouse on the floating windows in Stardic

2007-11-11 Thread Andrew
I'm using Gutsy and I downloaded the i386 package version 3.0.0-3 from
the debian sid website provided above by Jakson Alves de Aquino. It had
unmet dependencies so installed it ignoring the two unmet dependencies
using this command:

sudo dpkg -i --ignore-depends=libpango1.0-0,stardict-common
stardict_3.0.0-3_i386.deb

I can now use the floating window ok and all other functions of the
program seem to be working ok too.

Warning: I am not an expert and don't know if ignoring these unmet
dependencies will cause the program to exhibit other bugs down the road.
It doesn't so far on my system.

Hope this helps others who are trying to avoid compiling from source
like I was.

[Bug 161968] Re: Old outdated packages!

2007-11-11 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Thank you for your bug report (although a slightly less antagonistic
tone will generally get better results!).

However, this is not a bug but a deliberate design choice in the Ubuntu
release process (see «https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeBasedReleases» for
some details).

Generally, chasing version numbers is not very useful (is there anything
new in the new version that you actually need?). What is really
important is the stability (does it work) and features (does it do what
you want it to) of the software, and simply packaging the very latest
release of everything is generally not a good compromise.

For the exceptions we have a couple of processes to update a released version:
1) The security repository «https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityUpdateProcedures»,
to fix security bugs in packages
2) SRUs «https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates?action=showredirect=SRU»
to fix significant non-security related bugs in existing packages
3) Backports «https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports», to bring
packages with significant new functionality from the development version into a
release.

If you really have to have the latest of everything, Ubuntu is probably
not the distribution for you. Gentoo, or Debian unstable may be more
acceptible to you. Note, however, that this is a trade-off between
stability and newness.

[Bug 156085] Re: Could not open /proc/bus/usb/devices

2007-11-11 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
We'd really prefer your original one-line patch to the new version
(although qemu upstream would probably be interested in the new, general
patch). We don't have to care about kernel backwards-compatibility :).

Also, you have the wrong version numbers for your gutsy-proposed
debdiffs. The versioning of SRUs are a bit different to normal
development versioning. For these packages I'd suggest 0.9.0-2ubuntu4.1
for qemu and 1:28-4ubuntu2.1 for kvm. (One of the reasons for the
different versioning is to make sure it doesn't conflict with the
versioning in the development release - otherwise you could have a
0.9.0-2ubuntu5 in gutsy-updates and a *different* 0.9.0-2ubuntu5 in
hardy).

[Bug 147632] Re: Uable to put my mouse on the floating windows in Stardic

2007-11-11 Thread Andrew
Sorry folks, I would delete my last message if I could but I can't see a
way. Turns out that if you do what I said then stardict works fine but
you can't use apt anymore because it detects the unmet dependencies when
it builds the dependency tree each time you try to use apt.

So, if you followed my previous advice, just uninstall stardict to get
apt working again:

sudo apt-get remove stardict

Re: [Bug 151499] Re: alt+tab crashes emerald

2007-11-11 Thread integr8e
I found what was causing the crash; it would seem that the xserver-xgl
package was the culprit. I removed it, and PRESTO!!!, problem solved; I now
just use the Nvidia driver which works far better than the xserver-xgl
driver anyway (Note: even though I was using the Nvidia driver before, the
xserver-xgl driver was overriding it).

On Nov 8, 2007 4:27 PM, GFree [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

[Bug 161977] [Ubuntu Mirroring] cdicons in htaccess should use relative paths

2007-11-11 Thread David Bartley
Public bug reported:

*/htaccess files for ubuntu-releases list the following:

AddIcon /cdicons/folder.png ^^DIRECTORY^^
AddIcon /cdicons/iso.png .iso
AddIcon /cdicons/jigdo.png .jigdo .template
AddIcon /cdicons/list.png .list .manifest .html MD5SUMS MD5SUMS.gpg
AddIcon /cdicons/torrent.png .torrent

With url's such as http://fr.releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ the file icons
are displayed correctly. However, with url's such as
http://mirrors.gigenet.com/ubuntu/7.10/ the icons do not get displayed
since http://mirrors.gigenet.com/cdicons does not exist (but
http://mirrors.gigenet.com/ubuntu/cdicons does). To fix this, relative
url's should be used for the icons:

AddIcon ../cdicons/folder.png ^^DIRECTORY^^
AddIcon ../cdicons/iso.png .iso
AddIcon ../cdicons/jigdo.png .jigdo .template
AddIcon ../cdicons/list.png .list .manifest .html MD5SUMS MD5SUMS.gpg
AddIcon ../cdicons/torrent.png .torrent

In the kubuntu/*/.htaccess files this needs to look like:

AddIcon ../../cdicons/folder.png ^^DIRECTORY^^
AddIcon ../../cdicons/iso.png .iso
AddIcon ../../cdicons/jigdo.png .jigdo .template
AddIcon ../../cdicons/list.png .list .manifest .html MD5SUMS MD5SUMS.gpg

2007-11-11 Thread Alfredo Gemma
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 131526 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131526

Bug Confirmed: OpenOffice 2.3.0. There is no evidence that switching to
standard themes is a workaround (in many clients affected by this bug It
does not solve the problem). The only workaround, in case you have
multiple printers defined, is setting the default printer and then print
directly.

[Bug 33236] Still present in Gutsy (was: Re: KNewsticker is not listed in Kontact)

2007-11-11 Thread Rastloser
I suppose you meant the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc,
the path you gave does not exist on my out-of-the-box Gutsy
installation. Additionally, the ActiveSummaries statement does not
exist in my version of the file; there are, however,
LeftColumnSummaries and RightColumnSummaries entries.

Anyway, I tried modifying the file as you suggested, but this gives no
results (I also tried some variants in the config file). The plugin is
no longer visible in the config dialog. So, I guess, the bug is not
fixed for Kubuntu Gutsy.

Any hints on how to narrow down the cause would be appreciated, I'd
really like to use this function and am willing to put some work into
it.

Re: [Bug 151485] Re: kmail selects wrong sending profile when redirecting

Dear Eythian,

the package manager reports the version of the package, it's quite
different from the buildnumber of kmail.

The package could have changed in many ways; for instance some configfiles
might have changed, the postinstall script, or the documentation. It's
always good to report the version and build (as 'About' reports) and also
the package version...

Back to the problem. When I go to
Settings - Configure Kmail - Accounts - Tab Sending
I do have two smtp transports (one smtp and one smtp-ssl).

The second is the default.

When I press 'e' sometimes it takes the default smtp server, and
sometimes, it takes the other.

I have not been able to see a pattern in this, but as is, your bug is now
Confirmed...

[Bug 161988] Lenovo N100 3000 0768-A52 touchpad stops working

2007-11-11 Thread Luis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Some people report that the problem is after Resume but I don't know
that that's the case here.

Sometimes the problem is just that the side scroll quits. I can still
move the pointer and use the buttons. Sometimes the tap, scroll and
buttons quit requiring to start a new session. When this happens I can
still move the pointer around just not able to tap or scroll via the
touchpad or the buttons but the mouseover works since I can see the
Mozilla buttons highlight.

Also, sometimes the mouse pointer skips around while scrolling causing
the pointer to lose focus on the window being dragged/scrolled. Most of
the time this is when the touchpad starts having problems.

I'm not sure what to check for hence I can not add any logs.

Re-arrange the early part of PreInit so that Xorg -configure can run
 cleanly.

I patched and repacked:

I tested this with a ThinCan (http://www.thincan.com) running on a
Geode LX and while -configure doesn't crash, detection of the best
available resolution and color depth still fails. We end up in what
appears to be 640x480 @ 4 bit.

Can anyone else running on GX or LX hardware confirm or infirm the above

[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy freeze crash lockup

2007-11-11 Thread Andreas Troschka
Looking at all the comments in various forums and bug#, the freeze fenomena:
1. doesn't seem to relate to CPU type, nor to SATA, Graphics card, MB, memory
q.ty, or other hardware connected cases.
2. seems to inflict the Xserver only, and blocking the entire PC, basic VT too,
not keyb and mouse only
3. booting without startx enables to work on the VT for indefinitive time
without freeze problems
4. getting access to the frozen PC through telnet results in no response
5. booting and starting X, then connecting from a remote WS via Telnet works
fine but the communication stops working when the PC freezes
6. has no connection to any user space application
7. follows a completely randomic behave; else if nothing is touched after boot,
the PC freezes with completely random delay
8. in some cases the problem doesn't exist on the very fresh installation for,
at least, hours
9. tested on various new and older PCs (5 years old hw too) without change on
behave.
10. ... will add more when discovered

Regards

Andreas Troschka
