[Bug 161194] Re: [MoM Merge] mindi 2.24-2ubuntu1

2007-11-15 Thread Stephan Hermann
Hmmm?

When I look at the unmodified debian package of mindi I can see the
following:

Architecture: amd64 i386 ia64
Depends: mindi-busybox (= 1.2.1-2), binutils, bzip2, dosfstools, mkisofs,
module-init-tools, syslinux [amd64 i386], elilo [ia64], gawk, parted, ms-sys
[amd64 i386], file, nano
Recommends: cpio, mdadm, ntfsprogs, linux-image-2.6-486 | kernel-image-2.6-386
| kernel-image-2.4-386 | linux-image-2.6-amd64 [amd64] |
linux-image-2.6-itanium | kernel-image-2.6-itanium | kernel-image-2.4-itanium
Suggests: afio, eject, lzop, less, petris, acl, attr, lilo

which acks my merge as not a sync, right?

[Bug 162821] Settings root differs from that of bind9 package

[Bug 162584] Re: An English menu entry in German locale in gajim

2007-11-15 Thread Thomas Boje
I'm not sure whether it means something, but I downloaded the source from
gajim.org and looked into de.po myself.
If found this:

#: ../data/glade/roster_window.glade.h:2
#, fuzzy
msgid Add _Contact
msgstr Kontakt _hinzufügen...

Could it be that the fuzzy comment is interpreted by the compiler that
translates the .po into a .mo, so that the lines are in fact ignored? In
any case, I think it is inconsistent, that the English version does not
have an ellipsis, but the German has.

I also checked gajim.org's trac and that particular line was changed in
revision 8706, about two months ago:

[Bug 136822] Re: One broken USB storage device can hang the entire USB subsystem

2007-11-15 Thread John Gilmore
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# uname -a
 Linux om 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# cat /proc/version_signature
 Ubuntu 2.6.22-14.46-generic

I was copying disks with rsync. I had two 1-TB SATA drives involved,
one installed inside the chassis, the other on an eSATA cable to an
external box. Both of these drives performed fine - no bugs. Both are
formatted with ext2 filesystems.

I have borrowed two USB/firewire external drives, 1 TB each, formatted
with NTFS filesystems. The drives are made by Eagle Consus model
number ET-CSDU2F-BK. Each of these drive boxes contains a small SATA
RAID controller set up in JBOD mode, holding two 500GB drives.

I was using rsync -rav --inplace /mnt/jon1/ /gd1/ to copy from a USB disk to
a SATA disk. Rsync would copy along at about 20 MBytes/sec (according to the
iostat command). It chugged along fine for minutes or hours. I discovered
that I was able to get about 30 MBytes/sec if I ran rsync simultaneously from
the second USB disk to the second SATA disk. So I started doing that. But I
got several inexplicable hangs. rsync would be copying along, and would
suddenly stop.
That was the symptom; no error message, no crash, just a hang on one rsync,
while the other would go on.

When it would hang, it was always /mnt/jon1 that would hang. The rsync
command runs as two or three processes; one of those would hang in D+
state forever:

 9947 pts/3D+28:36 | \_ rsync -rav --inplace
/mnt/jon1/ /gd1/

ps -eopid,tt,user,fname,tmout,f,wchan shows it waiting in sync_page:

  9947 pts/3gnu rsync- 0 sync_page

When I do ls -l /proc/9947/fd, I get a hang. Luckily I can break out of it
by kill -9 from another terminal. So I snuck up on it:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# ls -l /proc/9947/fd
 Killed
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# /bin/ls /proc/9947/fd

 lrwx-- 1 gnu uucp 64 2007-11-14 23:28 /proc/9947/fd/4 - socket:[70521]

I was able to do lsusb without a hang, but lsusb -v hangs
unkillably.

Unplugging the USB device doesn't resolve the problem. In fact, after
resetting power on the computer to escape, the BIOS would hang if this
drive was plugged into USB. When I pulled it out and reinserted it, the
boot went on, but after booting, I got errors: usb 2-9: device
descriptor read/64, errno -110. and usb 2-9: device descriptor read/8,
errno -110. It required power-cycling the external disk box to reset
it from this state.

I can continue to borrow these external drives for another week or two,
and the problem seems pretty reproducible. I don't mind if you want me
to try running a test kernel, or to do some other actions to help run
down this bug. Computers ought to work reliably, even under heavy
loads.

[Bug 162413] Re: Connecting to WEP-encrypted networks using shared key impossible

2007-11-15 Thread apetrelli
Is this bug connected to KNetworkManager?
I previously used wlassistant to connect.
Under Feisty, wlassistant 0.5.5 works well, while under gutsy, wlassistant
0.5.7 does not work.
It seems that 0.5.5 used the command:
iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID key s:MYKEY
while under 0.5.7 it does not use it correctly: it uses a different technique
that I cannot remember.
I think it is a wrong use of iwconfig bug of KNetworkManager, not a driver
problem.

I tested:
TRENDnet TEW 424UB (USB) with Realtek Chipset
Intel Wireless (can't remember the model).

[Bug 162786] Re: Forced umount.nfs doesn't work

2007-11-15 Thread ofb
Actually it's not a bug, and it does work.

'umount2: Device or resource busy' can be avoided by including
'hard, intr' in the NFS fstab line. Since the processes can now be
interrupted, the client's GUI file managers no longer hang after the
forcing umount.nfs.

The 'umount.nfs -f' will still return the line, 'umount.nfs: Server
failed to unmount '192.168.0.2:/home/o/files/downloads'', but this is
only because it cannot override an fstab entry.

So to repeat, this is not a bug, merely an unfriendliness, and if
someone can delete this report to spare other devs wasting time reading
it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

[Bug 111232] Re: Missing Icons in system tray when Compiz is used...

2007-11-15 Thread Travis Watkins
Random guess at what is going on. An app with an rgba colormap can't
embed in an rgb app and vice versa. I'm guessing the panel starts with
an rgb colormap because compiz hasn't started at that point and then the
notification icons automatically get an rgba colormap through Qt (I
doubt they'd set one manually). In this case XEmbed fails and you get
applets popped out. Does this only happen with Qt apps or does something
like pidgin have this problem too?

[Bug 62511] Re: Apport generates a report on SIGQUIT

2007-11-15 Thread Martin Pitt
Calling the program in /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern when it is a pipe
even on ulimit 0 is a design choice, not a bug. We do not want to enable
ulimit -c gemerally just for getting apport reports, since that would
clutter the system with core files. (This now made it into the upstream
kernel, too.)

The actual bug is that the kernel wants to dump core on SIGQUIT, which
does not seem justified to me. It is not a signal that indicates a
program error.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-11-15 Thread HappySpaceInvader
Why? People are happy to pay for the complete bundle including Windows.
If people weren't happy to pay extra for commercial software, they would
 complain.
The only people I hear complaining are Linux geeks.
The average user thinks Windows is freeware. They are totally unaware that the
cost of their computer includes the cost of Windows. If you don't believe me,
search the Internet, and talk to an average computer user.

Exactly - ignorance is bliss... and ignorant people tend not to
appreciate geeks coming along and spoiling their blissful existences.
Nor do they appreciate elitist snobs telling them what they should or
shouldn't be doing. Trying to convince ordinary people to use Linux
instead of Windows is rather like trying to get people to read
Dostoevsky instead of Dan Brown.

itself infected libsane-hpaio with the link to the old libnetsnmp
 library.

So please go through all libraries listed by

 ldd /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hpaio.so.1

and ldd each library. Please tell which of these libraries link to
 libnetsnmp9.

OK, found it. It was in /usr/local/lib/libhpip.so.0

So it looks like indeed a I had a local version of the library...

Sorry for bothering in this case and thanks for helping resolving my problem :)

[Bug 129867] Re: Incorrect rendering of account tabs under XGL and Compiz

2007-11-15 Thread Fredrik Persson
I can confirm that this bug DOES appear on i386, NOT only on AMD64.
Those are my packages:

gnucash 2.2.1-1ubuntu4
compiz 1:0.6.0+git20071008-ubuntu1.1
xorg-driver-fglrx 7.1.0-8.37.6+2.6.22-14.1~ppa1

I don't have an ATI card, so I don't have a nvidia-glx package.

The bug only appears when Visual effects is turned on, so the
workaround with setting Visual effects to none works for me too. But
that makes the desktop very slow for some reason, so I really don't like
doing that.

Thanks for the advice and help. I did try deleting ~/.openoffice.org2/ but
it didn't solve the problem.

I don't know if the problem was with the themes ... I had already deleted

can create.

[Bug 162827] [MadWifi] denial of service

i suppose it will take a little while until new isos are released which

what is my best bet to get a fixed initramfs in the meantime?

are there some walkthrough docs for rebuilding the desktop isos or maybe
some place with prerelease versions for download like

thanks a lot

[Bug 152664] Re: update-rc.d segmentation fault on upgrade from clean feisty to gutsy

2007-11-15 Thread Jonathan Hitchcock
I had the same problem - upgrading from feisty to gutsy on a xen box,
the postinst scripts for things like module-init-tools and procps were
failing with a segmentation fault:

# dpkg --configure procps
Setting up procps (1:3.2.7-3ubuntu5) ...
Segmentation fault
dpkg: error processing procps (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 139

On investigation, it was update-rc.d that was causing the segmentation
fault:

# grep update-rc /var/lib/dpkg/info/procps.postinst
update-rc.d procps remove /dev/null
update-rc.d procps.sh start 17 S . /dev/null

# update-rc.d procps.sh start 17 S .
Segmentation fault

Running deborphan as above, the only libraries I had in common with
Chris were:

liblzo1
klibc-utils
libiw28
libc6-i686

I tried to remove them one by one, to see which the culprit was:

# apt-get remove klibc-utils
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct
the problem.

# dpkg -r klibc-utils
(Reading database ... 45868 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing klibc-utils ...

# dpkg --configure procps
Setting up procps (1:3.2.7-3ubuntu5) ...
Segmentation fault
dpkg: error processing procps (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 139
Errors were encountered while processing:
 procps

# dpkg -r libc6-i686
(Reading database ... 45827 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing libc6-i686 ...
Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

# dpkg --configure procps
Setting up procps (1:3.2.7-3ubuntu5) ...
error: kernel.maps_protect is an unknown key

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

Things were able to proceed after that, although removing libc6-i686 and
klibc-utils caused problems later on - they both needed to be manually
reinstalled before other packages could complete their configuration.

[Bug 148701] Re: Search function in File browser does not function

2007-11-15 Thread pt123
How could this be rated as low priority.

It is using Tracker's results when it shouldn't be.
There needs to be an option to let Nautilus not use tracker

If I navigate to a folder and then do a search all I want is results
within the folder.

This is annoying before you could navigate to the /usr/share/icons
folder

and search for contact-new.png and you will get all the varieties of
it in thumbnails.

With this Tracker search you can't expect us to index our root folder.

Also if you search for a general term like you .jpg you will get a
zillion results. While with the old search it was specific to a folder.

This used to be on feature that Ubuntu excelled over XP now its worse,
and useless.

[Bug 162836] qt4-dev-tools broken package?

2007-11-15 Thread Jan Osusky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qt4-dev-tools

sudo apt-get install qt4-dev-tools
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

[Bug 161794] Re: autologin doesn't work

2007-11-15 Thread fran cook
I edited lts.conf and booted the thin client. The results were the same
-- black screen with 'x' mouse cursor. I also edited lts.conf and
replaces a valid username (ws001) with an invalid username (dummy). The
thin client hangs on the black screen with the 'x' mouse cursor.

I also added another user to the server and changed lts.conf to reflect
the new user and login. Same results...

Here are the results of all logs that had entries for the thin client
boot process:

Update for this. I've booted and tested the function keys for LCD

[Bug 159123] Re: eth0 missing in (/etc/network/) interfaces file

2007-11-15 Thread kripkenstein
Well, if you intend to let NetworkManager handle all networking, then
perhaps this bug is invalid. But not everyone uses NetworkManager - I
can't - and for such users this is a problem. So I feel this is a valid
bug.

I guess my point is, why should /etc/network/interfaces be tied to
NetworkManager exclusively? It isn't a NetworkManager file.

Perhaps the issue is with NetworkManager being installed by default, and
dependent on ubuntu-desktop, so it can't be uninstalled without concern.
If this is Ubuntu's policy, then NetworkManager should either (1) work
perfectly, or (2) not make other networking things fail. Currently it
does neither.

[Bug 130836] Re: Specify OpenDocument icon(s) in Apache2 configuration

2007-11-15 Thread Soren Hansen
I'm afraid the license you've suggested is not acceptable for inclusion in
Ubuntu.
If you could accept relicensing the icons under the apache license, we could
even send them upstream and get them included in Apache. If that's not
acceptable, please relicense them in a way that doesn't restrict their use to a
specific purpose and make sure that you explicitly allow redistribution in both
modified and un-modified form. That's the minimal requirements for us.

Thanks for your work so far!

response on the forums was the following :

It is ok for eth0 not to be mentioned in /etc/network/interfaces; it means it
is managed in roaming mode by NetworkManager
You can reboot or disable and reenable networking via the NetworkManager applet.

so I suppose the bug is invalid ?

[Bug 128761] Re: django installation breaks modules command in python help()

2007-11-15 Thread Ralph Janke
Could you please reconsider your decision setting this report to
invalid.

While your statement makes sense in regards to running django. The
problem is that as soon as django is installed, python itself is broken.
There is no need to set a django environment variable for the situations
in which python is used simultaneously for other purposes than django.

If it is not possible to remove this error entirely, and the only option
is that the environment variable is set, then the installation of django
should configure the system in such a way that the variable is set
automatically and also points to a default configuration file.

I think it is overreaching to accept that existence of django breaks the
usage of the help system in python in general only because django is not
setup.

I appreciate your help and consideration.

Firstly, it seems you have managed to leave an extra Maintainer: in the
XSBC-Original-Maintainer. Secondly, Theres generally no need to put bug
numbers in changelog entries for merges, as the bug has been mentioned

If you could fix these up, and re-subscribe ubuntu-universe-sponsors

Re: [Bug 103260] Re: OpenOffice.org 2.2 saving to smb problem (OO 2.3 on Gutsy)

2007-11-15 Thread erne100
Did you try to use cifs instead of smb? It helped me to solve this
problem.

2007/11/11, Christopher [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I had a similar issue with saving to a network share (smb). The error
message was the same, and I believe that is the default error when
saving a document fails. I had a document open and had already saved it
to the shared drive previously. I left the computer alone for a while (7
hours or so) and came back to my document. I began editing the document
again and tried to save. This is when OO froze for a minute or two and I
got the error message. OO seemed to unfreeze when I browsed to the
network share using Nautilus and opened up a folder. After, I tried to
save again and it worked fine. This suggests to me that either SMB had
to reconnect or my network share disk was in an idle state and had to
 speed up again.

This happened to me on Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 and OOo 2.3.

[Bug 29529] Re: Laptop HDD powerdown every 5 seconds

2007-11-15 Thread Tormod Volden
This is however not present in gutsy

Do you have laptop-mode enabled (in /etc/default/acpi-support)? In Gutsy we
have in /usr/sbin/laptop_mode:
 LM_BATT_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT=4  # 20 seconds
but I think this is reset by /etc/default/acpi-support:
 # Spindown time on battery
 SPINDOWN_TIME=12

[Bug 115612] Re: foomatic-gui: Unable to read printer database.

2007-11-15 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
Till Kamppeter wrote on 2007-08-29:
The standard printer setup tool on Gutsy is system-config-printer.
So printer setup is still possible under Ubuntu even without foomatic-gui.
Therefore it is set to Low priority.

I thought, that Importance field in bugreport tells, how important is bug for
usage of package, not for usage of ubuntu. For example there is crash bug in
epiphany-browser - bug #96267 and importance is set to Medium.
Why it's set to medium - browsing is still possible under Ubuntu even without
epiphany-browser as mozilla firefox is always installed.
Till, I think you are not right - foomatic-gui doesn't work, it doesn't even
start in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy), so, importance of this bug should be set to High
or foomatic-gui package should be removed from Ubuntu.

Re: [Bug 109086] Re: Edgy won't upgrade to Fiesty without update-manager-core

2007-11-15 Thread LanternRouge

When I filed the bug, I also mentioned
the workaround -- upgrade the update manager.

7.10 does have some issues, though. Such
as disappearance of the auto-network connect
when I plug in the Ethernet cable, unreliable
CD burning, etc.

It is still better than Windows.

Thanks for making Linux viable.

Cheers,

[Bug 159401] Re: Inbox shows no messages - inbox is not empty

2007-11-15 Thread Kackapa
I also have this problem.
Only a few of the latest messages show up.
New messages does NOT always show up,
not even after refresh or restart, but may show up later.

Regular browser web access to exchange shows all emails.

[Bug 77138] Re: gtkdoc-fixxref broken by compressed documentation

2007-11-15 Thread Mathias Hasselmann
Guess Live-CD support is quite important, but I wonder if the -doc
packages - which provide the index files - really are shipped with live
CDs. So far I considered the -doc packages an option developers choose
for convenience.

offtopicSince we talk about convenice: May I have gnome-doc and gnome-
dbg meta packages please? Finding and choosing all of them by hand is
quite boring./offtopic

[Bug 162849] mic not working with SiS SI7012 (ALSA)

2007-11-15 Thread gravity71
Public bug reported:

hi. My external mic is just not working. Not only in skype, but
globally.

i tried alsamixer, it's set on Mic1, micboost is on, mic capture is on but i
can't raise or lower its volume level. nothing is muted.
i also installed kmix and tried to solve the problem, but nothing changed.

it's very unlikely that it is a mic problem. i just moved from suse 9.3
to ubuntu gutsy, and in suse the mic worked flawlessly.

Do you know whether foomatic-gui is still maintained upstream (it was
Chris Lawrence from Debian who did it)? If not, we should drop it.
