[Bug 172588] Re: [atanks] no .desktop file

Consider adjusting your .desktop file by using atank-icon as Icon field,
there is no need to move it from its position (/usr/share/pixmaps
/atanks-icon.xpm, actually).

[Bug 174599] Re: (GUTSY) Typing sudo in run applications dialog box freezes system

2007-12-07 Thread nowshining
** Description changed:

typing sudo in the alt-f2 run applications dialog box and then the
program name or command freezes the system, and shuts off any
sound/music as well if any are playing and where at least/most the
keyboard only works to allow a ctrl+alt+backspace if not and one has
dontzap in the xorg conf then the only way out is via the powerbutton on
the computer. Gksudo seems to be unaffected by this and does NOT cause a
freeze up of the system. This occurs if by defualt and left unchecked
run in terminal is unchecked and one just presses the enter key on the
- keyboard. I did NOT check this bug is a security vulnerbility because I
- thought maybe a local DOS attack or remote if one is allowed to login
- and run the run applications dialog box or it may allow code injection,
- but all I know is what is stated in the sentences above about it
- freezing the system.
+ keyboard. I thought maybe it could allow a local DOS attack or remote if

YES I did a full install of Gutsy and have all updates up to when this
  bug/freeze was filed.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-07 Thread Mike McWay
thats one way to do itmaybe devs will realize how annoying this can
be.

this bug needs instructions on how to approach self-diagnosing the
problem. many people have removed all applets with no results.
sweetsinse seemed to do an extremely thorough job and suggested it may
be a problem with the compiz script used by ubuntu. has this been
explored by any developers knowledgable in this area?

looking at bootchart doesn't mean anything to me, if i go through the
trouble of patching and installing it to analyze login will someone take
a look? first though, how do i do that?

I for one use both compiz and deskbar as i have since edgy, and i've
still noticed a good 15-30sec jump in login time since moving from
feisty. removing them doesnt seem to change much, but when you're
talking about 45sec login vs 60sec its still waaa too lng.

[Bug 164449] Re: undefined symbols in mptspi driver

2007-12-07 Thread Martin Pitt
This still happens on the newly built server CD, and it's finally
crystal clear why I could not reproduce this on an installed dapper
(symbols were always fine, even with the previous version): the scsi-
updates-modules udeb simply doesn't ship mptspi.ko, but it should.
Therefore the one from linux-image is used, which can't work with the
newer mptbase.ko/mptscsih.ko.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The issue is not to realize how annoying the bug can be, it's to get
useful datas on what is creating the slowness. The code used is mostly
the upstream one and the issue is likely to happen on other distribution
using GNOME 2.20, switching distribution is not going to fix anything
and let to an another set of issues

[Bug 146731] Re: [Gutsy] Translation problems with the unlock screen

It actually seems some bug in Rosetta might have caused the translations
not to be included in the language packs? At least updated Finnish

not gnome-screensaver. I'd recommend anyone worried to make a small
change in gnome-screensaver translation so that it will be marked to be
included in the next translations update.

-* Changed all the indexing system so it now searches in the registered
- document, instead of in the HTML directory generated by dhelp.
-* Make .dhelp files obsolete, just use doc-base files directly. They
contain
- more information, maintenance is easier over all (we get rid of pointless
- conversions), and we get rid of bugs
- (Closes: #19076, #429233, #334789, #347980, #155054, #177668, #19076).
-* Clean up dhelp.pot file weirdness (Closes: #448211).
-* Removed the hardcoded HTML in favour of using templates, redesign the
- appearance of all pages, and made all those templates translatable to
- different languages using gettext.
-* Added configuration file to specify directories to search for doc-base
- files (Closes: #81405).
-* Add a special, all section with all the documents (Closes: #188258).
-* Show relevant portions of the results when searching (Closes: #272953).
-* Order sections (Closes: #283402).
-* Remove remaining debconf traces. Apart from not being used anymore, it
was
- making the postinst wait for the indexing even if it was run in the
- background.
-* Depend on swish++ instead of just recommending it.
-* Recommend or suggest different packages that give preview on search
- results
-* Change mozilla-firefox dependency to iceweasel.

+* Index *.pdf and *.txt. Otherwise, it seems only PDF files are indexed.
+* Add a rule for converting PS files to text prior to indexing.
+* Move pstotext to dependencies, because it is needed for indexing.
+* Add dhelp_fetcher.rb, a script to get the contents of a doc-base
+ registered documentation file. It uncompresses PDF and PS files for easy
+ viewing inside a browser.
+* Only index files, never directories (directories can be specified
+ implicitly by a glob, but those aren't part of the documentation).
+* Fix a couple of problems on upgrade (Closes: #452873).
+* Fix some issues with offline mode.

[Bug 174615] [heimdal] [CVE-2007-5939] possible remote vulnerability of unknown impact via an invalid username

2007-12-07 Thread hk47
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: heimdal-dev

References:
[1] MDKSA-2007:239
(http://www.mandriva.com/en/security/advisories?name=MDKSA-2007:239)
[2] CVE-2007-5939 (http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2007-5939)

Quoting [1]:
It was found that the gss_userok() function in Heimdal 0.7.2 did not allocate
memory for the ticketfile pointer before calling free(), which could possibly
allow remote attackers to have an unknown impact via an invalid username. It is
uncertain whether or not this is exploitable, however packages are being
provided regardless.

Quoting [2]:
The gss_userok function in appl/ftp/ftpd/gss_userok.c in Heimdal 0.7.2 does
not allocate memory for the ticketfile pointer before calling free, which
allows remote attackers to have an unknown impact via an invalid username.
NOTE: the vulnerability was originally reported for ftpd.c, but this is
incorrect.

[Bug 68792] Re: amule crashes when trying to download kad nodes

2007-12-07 Thread TheGZeus
I really hope I don't come off as rude here, but I get frustrated and tweak
out...
ummWhy is this not fixed/backported/reverted?
It worked on my last installation, and the one before(etc. to half way through
feisty) but...not now.
Why did this package get 'updated' when it just breaks an installation? is this
a sporadic problem, with no current known cause?
Again, the current version out there fixes this problem, but for some reason
there's not even a patch? I'd like to help somehow, but I don't even know where
to start, and I'm not much help when I'm this frustrated. I have 30+gb worth of
unfinished downloads just taking up space.

To sum up, it used to work, now it doesn't, there's a fix, it's not
available through apt, I want to help, I don't know how, and doubt I'd
do that well at it.

Pulling out his own hair,

G.Z.

giflib promoted to main. Now the following packages need to be rebuilt against

[Bug 113086] Re: Enabling Desktop Effects, some part of firefox, thunderbird and evolution windows are black for few seconds when I deminimize them.

2007-12-07 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a
7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore
declined. According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be
deployed and tested in the current development version before an update
to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that
policy applies to this bug. See:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .

The bug is not being closed as work will continue on fixing it for the
next release, Hardy Heron (8.04). To help improve the state of this bug
see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage and

[Bug 174631] Re: Wireless is not working on IBM T60p

2007-12-07 Thread Basilio Kublik
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 174632] [gutsy] Geforce 7600 GS driver does not work

2007-12-07 Thread Piotr Makowski
Public bug reported:

The card Geforce 7600 GS is not automatically detected and is configured
as Vesa. Works even with high resolution (1280x1024).

When trying to install the driver with restricted-drivers-manager
(detects it as nvidia-glx-new) after reboot computer starts with very
low resolution and there is an error that xorg couldn't be configured
(don't remember exactly). When trying to come back to the original
(vesa) xorg.conf file only 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions work.

When trying to replace vesa in xorg.conf file to nvidia there is an
error ocurring that some nvidia module/file was not found.

[Bug 29789] Re: tv card audio not working

2007-12-07 Thread Sergey Prokhorchuk
I have the same problem with MediaForte PV951 card (video is ok, but no
sound) on 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. This card works ok on Mandriva 2007.0
(2.6.17 kernel I think) and worked before on previous Mandriva
versions... My PC configuration: AMD X2 3800+ (939), ASUS nForce4
chipset, amd64-version of Ubuntu installed. It looks like problem does
not depend on proprietary/free driver selection for my NVIDIA 7600GT
card (i tested both configuration). I've tried different bttv, tvaudio
modules options but didn't solve a problem.

So 7.10 still have this problem :(

[Bug 149881] Re: HAL fails to initialise when /etc/init.d/rc sets CONCURRENCY=shell

2007-12-07 Thread Massimo Dal Zotto
This is a race condition between hal and dbus which happens when the two
initscripts are started concurrently by upstart.

This should not happen because hal initscript requires dbus for starting
but instead happens when upstart concurrency is enabled because the
scripts have been symlinked with the same number (12).

The solution is to install hal initscripts with NN=13 (see attached
patch).

[Bug 165052] Re: [r8169] mac addres lost

2007-12-07 Thread Claus Rosenberger
I don't know if it is a problem with xen or with the network interface
driver.

The big question is, should the original MAC address to be restored on
startup of the machine or not?

Whats happening here is that xen is moving the physical interface eth0
to peth0. The dom0 will use a virtual interface eth0 which get the
original MAC address of the network card. peth0 which is the physical
card is only in bridging mode and has the virtual MAC address
FE:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF. After the restart peth0 has still FE:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
which is wrong because it will be loaded as eth0 first. Then it starts
from the beginning, eth0 with the wrong MAC will be copied to peth0 and
the wrong MAC will be transported to the virtual device eth0.

There are two ways how that problem can be solved.

1. with xend stop the script network-bridge should be started with parameter
stop, at this point the original mac address we be set to the physical device
again.
2. on every startup or load of the module r8169 the mac address has to be set
to the interface card.

Perhaps anybody can give more hints to following points:

1. Is there a command to restore the original MAC address of a r8169 interface
card?
2. Should the original MAC address not be set back on system startup by the
interface itself?

Hi, I'm having the same symptoms actually.

My system freeze after the trackerd took out the CPU resources up to
60%.

However, my system appeared normal after I took out one piece of RAM. So
as my suggestion, please take a check on your RAM as well? Thank you.

[Bug 174669] gutsy server installer doesn't detect partitions

2007-12-07 Thread Drate Otin
Public bug reported:

This bug is similar to bugs 144230 and 108562. I assume a more recent
release constitutes a new bug...

That said, it's pretty straight forward: the partition manager starts,
it thinks I have a SATA hard drive, which I don't, I have IDE, and then
only sees a blank (no partitions) disk.

I tried Server 6.06 and found that it also did not detect any
partitions. I have 3 1/2. They are a pre-existing install of Gutsy
server (which I intend to over-write), an install of PCLOS 2007, a
shared home directory between them, and a logical partition for swap.
From what I've read this problem has been a recurring one in Ubuntu
releases and may have to do with inconsistent partition tables or some
such. I have read of a possible work around but this is obviously not
ideal. Installation is NOT where you want to start getting hiccups.

Also, would the SATA / IDE thing be a separate bug?

Graci for the attention.
