[Bug 37239] Re: VPN connection should alter /etc/resolv.conf

2007-12-28 Thread Pirx
Well, since recent auto-updates and some playing with Firestarter,
wireless vpn connections work fine through NM. Disabling the firewall
seems essential for the VPN connection to work. For wired vpn
connection I use the OpenVPN config GUI, which also works fine. I could
imagine that cleaning out resolv.conf contents is a measure to avoid
accidential DNS calls outside the tunneled connection, with resulting
breach of security. NB: I am no programmer either, just a VEP.

Best wishes for a happy new year,
pirx

[Bug 131711] Re: [gutsy] no sound: Failed to construct test pipeline in sound recording

2007-12-28 Thread Eduard Nicodei
i had this problem also. I managed to fix by purging esound, esound-clients,
pulsaaudio-module-gconf and pulseaudio. After that I gave the computer a hard
reset and ... as if by miracle, IT WORKS.
Minor detail: after I've read through the comments here, I installed the
programs mentioned above and after that flash videos had no sound, although mp3
and avis worked. So I thought to remove those programs and here we are,
everything is working. I still get that error message but I really don't care
since it works.

2007-12-28 Thread Luke Tupper
I found that a password with the $ and @ character will not be accepted
as a character in the file.

I detected the issue by using the wpa_password command. If you enter a
passphrase with the illegal characters the output will be missing those
characters. In my case the password was myPassword66$@ and the output
had myPassword66.

[Bug 152664] Re: update-rc.d segmentation fault on upgrade from clean feisty to gutsy

2007-12-28 Thread gherardo
I occurred here googling a bit. I have what I regard as a related
problem.

I upgraded my release to Gutsy, and then I tried to install ubuntu-
server-xen for the first time on this machine.

The installation aborted with synaptic complaining that

Depends: libc6-xen but it is not going to be installed

Then I tried to install libc6-xen first, which failed with

 PreDepends: libc6 (=2.6.1-1ubuntu9) but 2.6.1-1ubuntu10 is to
be installed

libc6-xen is optimized for xen hypervisor and used by xen instead of
the standard libc6.

The problem then seems to be that libc6-xen has not been updated.

After Kernel update to 2.6.22-14.47 my laptop (Hp Pavilion tx1215nr)

[Bug 85767] Re: No stress (klemtoon) shown

2007-12-28 Thread Roel Huybrechts
The bug is more specific than explained above. The stress actually is
shown with a ` sign, but only appears when the stress is in the first
syllable of a word.

For example:

$ gnuvd kariboe
gives:
 ka|ri|boe (de ~ (m.), ~s)
 1 Noord-Amerikaans rendier
and should give:
 ka|ri|`boe (de ~ (m.), ~s)
 1 Noord-Amerikaans rendier
the relevant source of the webpage:
 BIGka#183;ri#183;bUoe/U/BIG

$gnuvd wieldop
gives:
 `wiel|dop (de ~ (m.))
1 deksel dat de naaf van een wiel afsluit
and this is correct.
the relevant source of the webpage:
 BIGwUie/Ul#183;dop/BIG

I have little knowledge about C programming, but the bug might be in the
main.c file in the code block starting at line 220.

[Bug 146803] Re: gnome-power-manager shows 2 batteries instead of 1

2007-12-28 Thread Michael Doube
My bug is the same as Matteo's - 2 batteries reported by the applet but
only one BAT entry under /proc/acpi/battery. It seems to be quite a
dangerous bug because the calculation of remaining time is not correct
(too long) so the notebook runs out of charge before Linux has a chance
to automatically suspend or shut down. My filesystem was damaged by
just such a power failure.

[Bug 179041] sshfs mountpoints disappear at transfering/enumerating large amounts of files

2007-12-28 Thread Boudewijn
Public bug reported:

In order to synchronize the home directories of a new laptop with the
old one(s), I connected them by wire and mounted the (old) homedirs via
sshfs.

Copying of small directories work out, but the .kde directory does not
get copied. The mountpoint disappears while Konqueror is enumerating the
files in the directory.

First I blamed the UTP cables or the switch. After swapping those out, I
used SFTP/fish. It turns out that via sshfs I could only list about 5000
files out of 1+ that where actually there.

I described my problem in the forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4027766

Other bugs that have a similar ring to it are:
147034 exaile crashes when rescanning library location mounted using 'sshfs'
137514 sshfs locks up randomly
100116 sshfs mounted drives do not show correct size and availability in df

[Bug 179042] [hardy] fglrx, compiz and opengl conflict

2007-12-28 Thread Zenigata
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

When using the proprietary ati driver that is in the hardy repository
with compiz (using aiglx and not xgl), the opengl rendering is buggy :

there is lots of blinking and every opengl window has an allways on
top attribute that makes them (because of the blinking) visible half of
the time.

I tried it with the hardy repository doing an upgrade from gutsy to
hardy using aptitude dist-upgrade.

I have an amd64 installation

Re: [Bug 178983] Re: no panel/status bar under live cd

2007-12-28 Thread DCmartiX
The bug was closed as Incomplete, which I understand, and there is also
this bug which I was informed about:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/70561

I feel like I should just go ahead and install from the alt inst CD. I
may even go more minimal with fluxbuntu since this laptop has only 256
MB RAM. Actually, Windows reports 224 MB with their tool.

Thanks for the help and concern. Since the LiveCD was TERRIBLY slow, I
don't know how long it would even take to get the info from the logs and
error files.

Yes, the files are created during the session on the livecd, no need to have an

[Bug 147250] Re: [Gutsy Alternate CD] Alternate install CD (both x86, AMD64) not booting on HP NX6325

2007-12-28 Thread wolfchri
Hello Leann,

thank you for working on this issue. I just tested the amd64 - Alternate
install CD Hardy Alpha2 two minutes ago, but unfortunately exactly the
same issue - it just stops booting after loading the kernel, screen goes
black, system is still alive (responds to Ctrl-Alt-Del). With my
fb=false workaround, it boots.

The NX6325 comes with a integrated ATI chipset (M200) with an Ati1150
graphics accelerator. Me thinks here is the root for this issue. I will
also google around these days as I have some leisure time.

Let me know if I can help you. Thanks again!

[Bug 154268] Re: Adding a New record dose not work

2007-12-28 Thread Glennji Mason
I've seen the same problem on Ubuntu Gutsy, MySQL backend, with the
following workaround:

Go to Tools - Preferences.
Movie Details tab.
In the Defaults area, make sure none of the drop-down lists are set to N/A.
Save, try again.

I think the reason behind this is because the various fields (media,
condition, codecs, etc) are indexed from 1 in the database, but N/A has
a value of 0 and it's tripping up an array index somewhere. (If you
want an N/A-equivalent field, you can add it to the end of each list on
the Dictionaries and Languages tabs).

[Bug 140511] Re: Belkin USB bluetooth device loads wrong module

2007-12-28 Thread Carsten Sørensen
I'm sorry to report that the problem still exists in 8.04 Alpha 2.

The system seems to hang on * Loading hardware drivers When the
Bluetooth adapter is unplugged during this hang, the pegasus module
prints out a screenfull of errors and the boot sequence then continues.
This is exactly the same behaviour as 7.10.

It would seem that the pegasus module is still being loaded to handle
the adapter in question.

[Bug 179047] user friendy monitor/tv-out hotplugging support: a display manager applet?

2007-12-28 Thread Tom Verdaat
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I got tv-out working on my laptop running Ubuntu Gutsy. It's
great to see that display hotplugging is finally supported but to turn
tv-out on and off I need to enter several xrandr commands. I believe
this does not comply with the it just works idea behind Ubuntu. So I
think we need a GUI tool to make hotplugging of displays easier than
Windows or MacOS.

Can we get something like a Display manager applet, comparable to the
NetworkManager and Bluetooth manager, that notifies the user whenever a
new display is connected? The user can then click on the applet icon,
which pop up a window which allows the user to configure the new display
(turn screen on/off, set to clone mode or extended desktop) for the
current session.

Limiting these settings to the current session removes the need for the
user to have admin privileges, whilst allowing ad-hoc display support.
To me this seems desirable, especially for laptop and other portable
device users which regularly want to connect their fixed office monitor
to work on, a TV to play a movie or a beamer to show a presentation.

The infrastructure seems to be in place already: xorg/xrandr already supports
hotplugging, DBUS can relay the new (and removed) connection notification to
the applet and the window i mentioned could be the same as the screens tab of
the current Screens and graphics preferences window
(http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=814image=ubuntu_displayconfig_1), all
though there would be two changes needed:
* it does not seem to support tv-out (composite or s-video) as a screen yet.
* opening this preference window requires admin privileges for it currently
only allows changing permanent, system-wide display settings.

I know it all sounds very easy and if I were a programmer I'd try to
build it. Unfortunately I'm unable to do so. Could someone please help a
bunch of Ubuntu users out with this feature?
