[Bug 152731] Re: [regression] gnome-power-manager laptop backlight not working on VAIO VGN-FSxxx

2008-01-06 Thread Tony Kitzky
I did a clean install with updates of Gutsy x86_64 on a new Sony Vaio
VGN-NR160 laptop. Screen backlight control is non-functional from both
the gnome desktop applet and the brightness applet on the launcher
panel. lsmod show the sony-laptop module is loading. I have only a
generic directory acpi_video0 in /sys/class/backlight, nothing for
sony. Echoing values in to brightness does nothing. I do have an
empty directory in /proc/acpi/sony if that means anything.

I am compiling kernel 2.6.23.12 now. We'll see if that does anything.
Otherwise I think I'll have to drop back to a 32-bit install. I haven't
tried the 32-bit live cd yet. I'll try that first.

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2008-01-06 Thread NiksaVel
I have the same problem occuring on my machine - AMD Athlon XP 1600+ /w
512MB RAM on a nforce2 mobo running Linux Mint Daryna - which is
essentially gutsy gibbon at it's core.

The problem happens to me when I try to burn a second or third DVD in a
row... the system just hangs for 4 secs out of 5 with hald-addon-stor
taking up most of the proc. It actually gives the proc. to growisofs now
and than (I've tried burning with sys guard proc monitor open to see
what happens), and than after a few minutes it settles down with hald-
addon-stor taking 46% and growisofs 46%...if I kill hald-addon-stor
the comp unlocks immediatelly but I loose access to the drive and the
DVD I was burning is unusable - I already have a load of coasters.

I am using LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1P KL05 (/dev/hdc, )

NOW HERE'S THE PART NOONE MENTIONED B4:
I don't think this is strictly drive related - I have been using this burner in
another comp for the past few months on the same software setup - and it gave
me NO TROUBLE WHATSOEVER!!! Only now that I've swapped some hardware around
have I started getting this problems...and wasting $$$ in failed DVDs

I've tried booting with all-ide-generic but it didn't make much
difference...

All the solutions I've seen here will help me unlock my comp one way or the
other, but if I realise correctly, they will all also break my burning process
- essentially not helping me much - I will still mess up every other DVD burn I
attempt...

[Bug 180750] No graphical screen when boot Kubuntu Hardy Heron CD

2008-01-06 Thread pete_83
Public bug reported:

HW: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton), ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mainboard, _Gigabyte
Geforce 6600_ and 2x256+512MB DDR RAM in Dual Ch. DDR mode, CRT monitor
(max. [EMAIL PROTECTED])

I downloaded nowday Kubuntu H.H. 8.04 alpha (2?) from the Kubuntu page. Burn to
CD etc.
First I try default mode (First option), but same as last previous Ubuntu
versions (7.04,7.10) caused this blinking problem, but If I used 'Safe graphic
mode' this fix the problem (previous versions).

I tried boot with the second option, 'Safe graphic mode', but it was
same.

I think the VGA is the problem, and not the monitor.

Description the procedure: The boot menu OK, boot graphic OK, Start
KDM...and...after...switch to other mode, when vertical lines, blinking
cube-s etc. On the TV-Out... blinking small red points randomly.

How can I fix this problem? Other boot option? etc.

Thx.

[Bug 125128] Re: display is blurry and too tall at 1400 x 1050

2008-01-06 Thread Martin Skogevall
Same thing here. Gutsy installed.

I have a Dell Latitude D430 with intel-graphics and a Samsung SyncMaster 203B.
DVI works like a charm, but if connected through VGA the image gets too tall
for the display.

The DPI-values seems to be bad also. With DVI I get very large fonts, if
I restart with VGA the fonts are really small. I use Arial 8 as my font.

[Bug 16472] Re: Login Screen Resolution

2008-01-06 Thread register
for me the problem was indeed the xorg.conf file. I'm running ubuntu
through VMware on windows XP. in terminal I typed the following:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I entered the password and then I scrolled down in xorg.conf until I
found the resolution that I didn't like: 1920 x 1440.  I changed it to
1280 x 960.  the line I changed in xorg.conf now looks like:

Virtual1280 960

I exited and saved xorg.conf, logged out, and the login screen looked
right this time. thanks to those who provided hints in this thread!

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2008-01-06 Thread Daddy_Cavy
Hi, I have a T60p, wonderful machine, running a great OS, Gusty. But I
followed all the helps, fixes etc and have come to the conclusion it's still
broke.
I've upgraded from 8.37 to 8.44 and the resolution goes to 1280x1024(crappy),
yes I've tried to manually set my monitor res etc, but vbe and ddc are built
into the fglrx driver and there is no way to turn it off on 8.44 and I get
suspend/hibernation perfectly, or I can stay with 8.37 and have great 1680x1050
res but no suspend/hibernation.

Gee what a dilemma, so I'm stuck.

So I guess I'm looking for someone who has got one solution on a T60p working
well.
Pls help Obi-wan, your our only help... SW IV :-)

[Bug 155947] Re: ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at a reboot

2008-01-06 Thread Lars Kneschke
From my point of view the problem is not located in the nss_ldap but in
nss_compat/nss_files.

I have 2 servers. Both have a local openldap server running.

I have following lines in nsswitch.conf

passwd: compat ldap
group:  compat ldap
shadow: compat ldap

And I have configured following lines in ldap.conf on the affected
server

host 127.0.0.1 172.17.7.15

And I have following lines in /etc/passwd

syslog:x:101:102::/home/syslog:/bin/false
klog:x:102:103::/home/klog:/bin/false

I should never see any ldap queries on server 172.17.7.15 during the
boot process of the affected server, because all needed information
should be in /etc/passwd.

But when I enabled logging on the ldap server 172.17.7.15(which is already up
and running) I can see following lines:
conn=16 fd=21 ACCEPT from IP=172.17.7.201:52540 (IP=0.0.0.0:389)
conn=17 fd=22 ACCEPT from IP=172.17.7.201:52542 (IP=0.0.0.0:389)
conn=16 op=0 BIND dn= method=128
conn=16 op=0 RESULT tag=97 err=0 text=
conn=17 op=0 BIND dn= method=128
conn=17 op=0 RESULT tag=97 err=0 text=
conn=16 op=1 SRCH base=dc=schule,dc=loc scope=2 deref=0
filter=((objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=syslog))
conn=17 op=1 SRCH base=dc=schule,dc=loc scope=2 deref=0
filter=((objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=klog))
conn=17 op=1 SEARCH RESULT tag=101 err=0 nentries=0 text=
conn=17 op=2 SRCH base=dc=schule,dc=loc scope=2 deref=0
filter=((objectClass=posixGroup)(memberUid=klog))
conn=17 op=2 SRCH attr=gidNumber
conn=17 op=2 SEARCH RESULT tag=101 err=0 nentries=0 text=
conn=17 fd=22 closed (connection lost)
conn=16 op=1 SEARCH RESULT tag=101 err=0 nentries=0 text=
conn=16 op=2 SRCH base=dc=schule,dc=loc scope=2 deref=0
filter=((objectClass=posixGroup)(memberUid=syslog))
conn=16 op=2 SRCH attr=gidNumber

As you can see, the affected server is trying to look up the uid's of
the accounts syslog and klog from the ldap directory. This should never
happen, as these information are stored in /etc/passwd and
nss_compat/nss_files should be able to lookup these informations
already. nss_ldap should never get a request for these accounts.

[Bug 152362] Re: icedtea-java7-plugin always crashes firefox

2008-01-06 Thread Brian Rogers
The problem isn't specific to the plugin. It affects the whole JVM.
Simply instantiating a Frame or JFrame crashes it.

As a simplified test, you can create the file, Test.java:
class Test {
public static void main(String[] args) {
new java.awt.Frame();
}
}

Then, assuming icedtea is the default JVM, run:
javac Test.java
java Test

And it crashes. Building my own package prevents the problem. Strange...

[Bug 180758] [hardy] kernel 2.6.24-2 does not boot (ACPI)

2008-01-06 Thread Felix Braun
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-2-generic

I just upgraded my laptop from gutsy to hardy. Unfortunately, hardy's
kernel 2.6.24-2 hangs in the boot process when initialising the
processor with ACPI (I'll attach a screenshot shortly). If I boot with
acpi=off the boot process completes.

Everything worked fine with 2.6.22-14 (the kernel from gutsy). Also
vanilla 2.6.24-rc6 boots fine with ACPI.

I tried downloading linux-image-2.6.24-3 but something didn't work with
the initrd. I guess that package isn't ready yet?

[Bug 180761] audio codec instaling error

2008-01-06 Thread Scipione
Public bug reported:

I have just finished to install ubuntu for desktop few days ago and I
found a problem: I wanted to play a mp3, but I had no codecs for this
file, so I gave search for a codec/plug-in and I found GStreamer extra
plug-in but when I gave the command install it appears a message that
announced me that this codec/plugin (I don't know what exactly is) is in
conflict whit another application system: Cannot install 'gstreamer0.10
-plugins-ugly'

This application conflicts with other installed software. To install
'gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly' the conflicting software must be removed
first.

Switch to the 'synaptic' package manager to resolve this conflict. OK
I understood the problem, BUT my question is HOW DO I KNOW WHAT
PROGRAM SHOULD I REMOVE?!? It doesn't tell me, what should I do? What do
you recommend me to do?

2008-01-06 Thread Vu Ngoc San
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 173319 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173319

I'm not sure it is a duplicate of bug 173319. I have tested alpha2 live CD,
on d800 and d630, and get:

The module Monitor Display could not be loaded.

The diagnostic is:
Library files for libpython2.5so not found in paths

etc...

So this seems unrelated to kdesu

[Bug 180763] Nautilus open mpg file on smb with wrong program

2008-01-06 Thread Grek-336
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Open a MPG file over the network with Nautilus like
smb://athlon-xp-2500/MPEG-Videos/VIVA_So_0900-1200_001.mpg. The association
to a program is SMPlayer but Nautilus open with KMPlayer.
I have change the association to gxine, KMPlayer, MPlayer Movie Player,
SMPlayer, Video-Player, VLC media player and Xine Movie Player. Only the
associations to KMPlayer, MPlayer Movie Player and Video-Player working
correct. All other associations open with KMPlayer.
When I use Open with KMPlayer, MPlayer Movie Player and Video-Player
working correct. The other open the program but the video is not playing.
Drag and Drop the File from Nautilus to the Windows of the program works
correctly (the video is playing) with gxine, SMPlayer and Video-Player.
Open with the Open command from the programs working correct with gxine
KMPlayer SMPlayer Video-Player VLC media player.
MPlayer Movie Player don't accept
smb://athlon-xp-2500/MPEG-Videos/VIVA_So_0900-1200_001.mpg.
Xine Movie Player don't play the file correct.
MIME-Typ in Nautilus is video/mpeg.
When I do it with a MPG file from a local directory all Programs and
associations working correct.

Ubuntu 7.10; Gnome 2.20.1; Nautilus 2.20.0; gxine 0.5.11
(0.5.11-3ubuntu3); KMPlayer 0.9.4a; Mplayer ??.??; SMPlayer 0.5.62 (svn
r418); Totem Video-Player 2.20.0, VLC media player 0.8.6c (wxWidgets
Interface) Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2; xine 0.99.5

I don't now is it a bug of nautilus or a problem with the Media players,
but why open nautilus with one program on a local file and with another
an smb file when the association to a program is not changed?

When it is not a bug of nautilus im sorry that I waste your time and I'm
sorry for my english I hope you can understand it.

[Bug 149183] Re: {Gutsy beta] No sound whatsoever on znote 6625WD (HDA intel Realtek ALC268 codec)

2008-01-06 Thread Fred
Jean-Paul, try this :
Run live CD
Switch to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) and run the following commands :
fuser /dev/snd/*
This command should something like that :
/dev/snd/controlC0:
Then type :
kill
cat /proc/modules|cut -f1 -d |grep snd|xargs sudo rmmod
lsmod|grep snd
This command should output nothing. then type :
sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
Finally, switch back to XWindows (CTRL+ALT+F7)
You should have a message about reloading sound applet : Reload it.
Test if the sound works.

Keep me posted.

[Bug 147606] Re: Intelfb completely b0rken

2008-01-06 Thread MarcH
Ignore my above comment about intelfb and hibernate. Intelfb hibernates
fine. The hibernate issue was unrelated to intelfb. Sorry for the noise.
