Today in the morning I installed my old Radeon x550 instead current

freezing a little, but I hope that after installing everything will be
fine.

I surprised a little, because considering that ATI give more headache with
Ubuntu instead of NVidia. Especially on notebooks. Am I right?
Well, now I think I have to buy new videocard. I need your advice, guys. Which
one will work fine with Ubuntu? 8600GT is fine? Is it anywhere list of
recommended hardware?

Thank you for patience.

My configuration is

[Bug 151471] Re: Resume after suspend to disk or suspend to ram fails

2008-01-10 Thread Joe
I am seeing this problem as well under Gutsy (motherboard: MSI MS-7125
(nforce 4 ultra); processor: AMD 64 4200+). I have tried various modes
( with X running), with X shut down, framebuffer on or off, and for
these logs, I have booted the system with no loaded services (vga=0
init=/bin/bash) and followed the directions in the wiki. The system
will suspend (apparently) correctly, but it will not restore, the hdd
activity light turns on and stays there until the system is reset.
According to dmesg it is hanging on a random pseudo terminal (in this
log - /dev/ptyy0)

2008-01-10 Thread Kyle M Weller
yes, I can confirm the rt73usb.ko driver does not work for ANY RELEASE never
did, although the rt73 driver from here:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/rt73-cvs-daily.tar.gz
works fine. Wpa works great as well, unfortunately any wpa password longer
than 20 characters crashes Ubuntu and locks up the box, oops, nevermind, just
checked this forum thread:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=28063#28063
it seems the password length issue has been resolved for wpa with the rt73
driver from serialmonkey, basically here is how to install:
wget http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/rt73-cvs-daily.tar.gz
tar zxvf rt73-cvs-daily.tar.gz
cd rt73*
cd M*
make
sudo make install
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
append this to the end of the file:
# rt73 blacklisted drivers
blacklist rt2500usb
blacklist rt73usb
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
blacklist ipv6
now sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart and we shall be connected if
/etc/network/interfaces file is configured correctly, here is an example of
mine:
# WORKING STATIC AES/WPA CONFIG
#auto wlan0
#iface wlan0 inet static

Re: [Bug 181458] Re: HP laserjet 10XX need new firmware

2008-01-10 Thread Andreas Dalsgaard
I used the script from the links, but what the script does is actually
similar the same as what is done in bug 96454 (it downloads the
firmware for the printers: 1000 1005 1018 1020). But does this mean
that if I had attached the printer in hardy it would have worked
out-of-box, or would I still have to run hp-setup from the terminal?

On 09/01/2008, Till Kamppeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
The Ubuntu Linux distribution does not ship firmware files for HP laser
printers. The firmware is downloaded from the internet by tools coming
with the driver packages (getweb in the foo2zjs package from edgy on and
hp-setup in HPLIP from hardy on). So this is not a bug of the Ubuntu
ditribution bit a bug of the web sites of the driver suppliers.
Therefore I will close this bug report.

If you are using Gutsy or older you have most probably used getweb of
the foo2zjs package to obtain the firmware (and I assume that HP always
provides the newest firmware files for auto download).

Before I inform the author of foo2zjs to update his downloadable
firmware files, I have one question to you: If you have used getweb to
download your firmware file, did you convert the file with arm2hpdl as
 described in bug 181458:

[Bug 181242] Re: [Hardy]HP printer is not detected properly by HPLIP

2008-01-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
I am not sure in which component the bug is, therefore I have added all
these components. I have also subscribed the HPLIP developers at HP so
that they investigate the problem. The support of the kernel/udev/libusb
folks is also needed. Everything was working fine before applying the
general updates from yesterday and the kernel update from the day before
yesterday. As these updates do not include HPLIP there is more
probability that the bug is outside HPLIP.

Concerning the PSC750: It seems that for older models the problem also
exists but for newer models it is even worse as they do not get detected
at all.

[Bug 181716] Fills .xsession-errors with Warning: more than one line! spew

2008-01-10 Thread era
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I discovered a large number of these error messages in my .xsession-errors.
Hunting through Google hits for this error message was initially inconclusive,
but I think I finally found the culprit.
http://www.google.com/codesearch?q=%22Warning%3A+more+than+one+line%21%22hl=enbtnG=Search+Code

I have the Popup ALT Attribute extension and previously, that has been
preventing these messages (I think) but now that I upgraded to Gutsy,
they are back.

At a minimum, it would be useful if these messages could indicate which
application they come from; but if they are important, perhaps
.xsession-errors is not the right place for them, and if they are
unimportant, maybe they should simply be suppressed. (Personally, I
would favor the latter, or perhaps they could end up in Firefox's error
console.)

If they have to be printed, standard error would seem marginally more
correct than standard output. If the application name cannot reliably
be discovered, then surely at least the process ID could be added to the
message.

[Bug 181717] Lot of instance of soffice at oooqs2-kde start

2008-01-10 Thread LudoRA

Binary package hint: oooqs2-kde

When I use oooqs2-kde, it run normally just after installation.
But, when I logout and Loggin, oooqs2-kde seems to launch lot of soffice

So, it makes the PC to be very very slow (swap is overused).

I don't know if it's the vista sp1 but after some research it seems that
people MUST NEVER INSTALL BITLOCKER because it crypt entire disk

[Bug 181719] Everything freezes when writing to external HDD

2008-01-10 Thread Davy
Public bug reported:

I am using a Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750GB external HDD via an eSATA

unlimited read access. However when I try to write more than about 100MB

was the NTFS formatting, however I deleted the NTFS partition, and when

[Bug 181720] [postgresql] multiple vulnerabilities

2008-01-10 Thread hk47
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: postgresql

References:
MDVSA-2008:004
(http://www.mandriva.com/en/security/advisories?name=MDVSA-2008:004)

Quoting:
Index Functions Privilege Escalation (CVE-2007-6600): as a unique
feature, PostgreSQL allows users to create indexes on the results of
user-defined functions, known as expression indexes. This provided
two vulnerabilities to privilege escalation: (1) index functions were
executed as the superuser and not the table owner during VACUUM and
ANALYZE, and (2) that SET ROLE and SET SESSION AUTHORIZATION were
permitted within index functions.

Regular Expression Denial-of-Service (CVE-2007-4772, CVE-2007-6067,
CVE-2007-4769): three separate issues in the regular expression
libraries used by PostgreSQL allowed malicious users to initiate
a denial-of-service by passing certain regular expressions in SQL
queries. First, users could create infinite loops using some specific
regular expressions. Second, certain complex regular expressions
could consume excessive amounts of memory. Third, out-of-range backref
numbers could be used to crash the backend.

DBLink Privilege Escalation (CVE-2007-6601): DBLink functions
combined with local trust or ident authentication could be used by
a malicious user to gain superuser privileges. This issue has been
fixed, and does not affect users who have not installed DBLink (an
optional module), or who are using password authentication for local
access. This same problem was addressed in the previous release cycle
(see CVE-2007-3278), but that patch failed to close all forms of
the loophole.

Updated packages fix these issues by upgrading to the latest
maintenance versions of PostgreSQL.

It should be noted that I suspect the refresh rates to be wrong (as one
might be able to see from the output of xrandr). The only refresh rates
available are 60 Hz, 56 Hz and 55 Hz.

It seems like the refresh rates that ddcprobe reports are more correct

[Bug 181258] Re: problem about diskless booting

2008-01-10 Thread linsson
Thanks for answering.

I did not built initrams because this step was not in the howto.
The client is exactly the same machine as the server, I am only making a test.
I know both network cards work fine (at list when used with their local root
filesystem).

As for your last question I am not sure I understand you. These machines
only have one network card and the device is called eth0 everywhere. I
never used eth1, eth2 in any step of the diskless procedure. The
client is doing a pxe lan boot enabled in its bios.

anyway i am going to try your suggestion and include the nic module in the
initrams.
I guess I have to make the inclusion before I copy the whole filesystem on
/nfsroot, isn't it?
anyway could you please explain why the stuff now present on the server in the
nfs dir (which i call /nfsroot) works fine for local boot on the client and
requires this inclusion to work via nfs from the server? once the client
receives his ip address and loads the vmlinuz end initrrd file I thought it
also loaded the root filesystem, the same which worked fine as a local
filesystem!

[Bug 181702] Re: ATI restricted drivers + XGL + Gutsy = xscreensaver not working

2008-01-10 Thread Matthew Edmondson
Thanks Tormod

Apologies for not filling in details, mine is not a fresh clean install,
however:

The bug only started with XGL.

Standard gnome-screensaver, with its gui options of 'Regard computer as
idle' set to 2hours and 'Activite screen saver when idle', unchecked.

In power manager all settings set to leave the screen alone - i.e. not
blank or dim in either AC or Battery.

I have edited settings in gconf to see if I can affect the blanking
behaviour.

I will re-install soon and at that point be able to confirm this bug

Re: [Bug 156050] Re: r8180 and ieee80211_rtl cause total system lockup.

2008-01-10 Thread Toma
This is from the source.

linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-2.6.24/ubuntu/Makefile
...
# obj-$(CONFIG_RTL8187) += wireless/rtl818x/
...
# obj-$(CONFIG_NET_RTL818X) += wireless/rtl8180/rtl_ieee80211/
# obj-$(CONFIG_NET_RTL818X) += wireless/rtl8180/rtl8180/
...

Looks like its been disable to build, yet its included in the sources.
Also, skimming through the build logs suggests its not built either.

 Hi Toma,

Hopefully I clear up a few things.

 1) The newer kernel is 2.6.24. There is no 2.6.26 kernel (not yet at least).
 2) The rtl8180 driver can be found in the 'linux-ubuntu-modules' package.
Please install this if it is not already.
 3) The new task I opened is actually listed at the top of this bug report.
Under the Affects header is the new 'linux' task. For the Hardy
development cycle the kernel package naming convention changed from
'linux-source-2.6.xx' to just 'linux'. Adding the 'linux' task makes sure we
don't forget about this report for the current release and will continue to
try to work on getting it resolved.

 Hope that helps. Thanks.

[Bug 38544] Re: crash on opening an imap folder

2008-01-10 Thread Flemming Bjerke
Balsa freezes frequently. Perhaps it is due to some imap problems though
I am able to read the imap-mails.

Starting balsa from a commanline gives the following messages before
freeze:

IMAP:TLS: failed cert verification: 50 : application verification failure.
IMAP:TLS: failed cert verification: 50 : application verification failure.
Side thread asks the following question.
ask_idle: ENTER XXX

Whereas balsa was quite stable with festy, the gutsy version freezes
dayly. I have thought of compiling the latest version to see if it works
better. The gutsy version is definitely too unstable.

If you want more information, I will happily supply it.

[Bug 181458] Re: HP laserjet 10XX need new firmware

2008-01-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
You do not need to run hp-setup. The script does everything so that
foo2zjs is able to auto-upload the firmware into the printer. Especially
the hp-setup coming with Gutsy and older does not download any firmware
file.

If you connect the printer to Hardy, you can use hp-setup and get up-to-
date firmware from HP, but currently bug 181242 is breaking this.

Good Morning Sebastian.
Thank you for your E-Mail and thoughts.
However.
I can, at the moment use the Search By: Name/E-Mail/Any Field facility
without a causing Evolution to crash. The one on the Top Right.
The Problem/Bug/Whatever is with the Category Search Drop-Down where I would
be looking for Contacts in a specific Category. The One on the Top LEFT.
As to changing software whenever I encounter a Problem/Bug/Whatever, it is
Company Dictate (Yes, that is the correct definition!!!) that should there be a
Problem/Bug/Whatever, regardless of situation, not necessarily IT related, to
change to another. Should Ubuntu fail to meet expected standards, regardless of
field, we will change to another Freebie Software Solution.
Thank you any way for your thoughts.
Regards.

[Bug 181726] swap not mounted after repartitioning

2008-01-10 Thread Hans Gerd Evertz
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 6.10

I repartitioned my disk with gparted.
Noted that my notebook (only 256MB RAM) became much slower and
swapped a lot.
Found that the swap partition was no longer active (top returned zero swap
size).

swapon -a returned error message
swapon: cannot stat /dev/disk/by-uuid/a0119d95-45e9-4935-acce-d07b331db03c: No
such file or directory

Found hint on http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-93131.html ,
namely I commented away the uuid-line from fstab and added
  /dev/hda3 none swap defaults 0 0
followed by mount -a

Swap seems to work now. There is some error message upon waking up from
hibernate
which I cannot read
(N.B.: and I do not know how to read the error log and cannot spend still more
time to find out -- there should be a man-page or such on reading error logs)

Bottom line: repartioning the disk causes fstab to fail: This must not
happen !

--
Another comment: Why in the wolrd is there a UUID now in fstab ?
This looks like a really bad hack, requiring specific numbers where symbolic
names like /dev/hda1
are appropriate. Some comment from the net:
UUID must rank as one of the butt-ugliest new 'features'. It makes the once
simple fstab almost impossible to read and is causing all sorts of support ...

base-installer already warns you as follows:
