[Bug 217137] Re: Hardy Heron: Nautilus fails to open directory with more than 140 subfolders

2008-04-30 Thread socceroos
There is still no fix for this problem. I'm very disappointed that 8.04
was shipped with these kind of showstoppers. Yeah, they are
showstoppers.

I've found SMB shares in 8.04 to be very unstable, everyone in my
organisation has. Some folders won't display, X is killed while browsing
shares and you can't copy files directly from a share to the inbuilt CD
burning folder!!

Gutsy Gibbon didn't have these problems, not for anyone working where I
am. The only two things that I can put my finger on are these:

1) bad implementation of Samba (or buggy release)
2) untested, buggy and incomplete implementation of gvfs

I feel it is the latter.

:(

[Bug 217787] [NEW] cups crashes when using web-gui and refuses to print

2008-04-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: cupsys

I tried to print today but the printing job was just put in the queue
and nothing was printed. I did not get the printer icon in the
notification area.

I noticed how I got errors in auth.log from cups:

Apr 15 15:42:56 thnov-desktop cupsd: PAM unable to
dlopen(/lib/security/pam_smbpass.so)
Apr 15 15:42:56 thnov-desktop cupsd: PAM [error: /lib/security/pam_smbpass.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

I found that in bug #216990 this was solved by installing libpam-
smbpass. Why was i missing this package?

Anyway, after I installed it, still I cannot print. I restarted cups via
'/etc/init.d/cupsys restart' and I can see that user lp has a couple of
processes which seems to be handling by printing jobs.

When I go to localhost:631 in a browser cups immediately crashes. This
crash is not picked up by apport nor is anything written in /var/crash.

I started the process manually so I could see the crash:

$ sudo /usr/sbin/cupsd -f
sh: /usr/share/samba/panic-action: Permission denied
Aborted (core dumped)

So, every time I restart cups now my jobs are being processed but
nothing is being printed. I see no activity at my printer. As soon as I
try to use the web gui it crashes.

[Bug 217787] Re: cups crashes when using web-gui and refuses to print

2008-04-30 Thread Till Kamppeter
Then it is definitely a bug of our Samba package, reopening.

This is most probably not an upstream bug of Samba, though, as Milosz
Derezynski tells on the ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list that if he
installs Samba compiled from source (version 3.0.28a) CUPS does not
crash.

yes, I was asked to make selection at which I chose to keep the local version

exit the terminal screen and the installation seems continue and later again I
was asked to make the same selection. Again I chose the same option with the
installation skipping the Cleaning up the System and Restart steps and end.
The strange thing is my systems now working very fine as the update was done

[Bug 223826] Re: [Dist Upgrade] Enhancement: user-friendly error reporting?

2008-04-30 Thread Richard Birnie
Thanks for reporting this. You raise a valid point. Regarding the length
of the time out I know that the developer of update-manager is working
on making this shorter in a future version. The particular error you are
seeing is caused by a problem on the repository server, not something
that update-manager can do a lot about. You shouldn't need to edit your
sources.list update-manager does this for you and it looks like it has
worked correctly. This is really seems to be a case of bad luck, the
server may have been down or overloaded just at the time you tried to
upgrade. However I agree that this could be reported better so I will
add this to the wishlist. The best solution for this type of error is
usually to just try again later

[Bug 221691] xorg.conf

2008-04-30 Thread Trond Husoe
I have now also checked if the problem could be related to X, and so I
am now copying the content of xorg.conf.

I am also trying to read up on getting debug-information from the X

Remember: I have a dell d420 with the intel graphicscard. I have a
feeling something is missing here, but I am not sure.

burgwinkel, gdb stops the program at the moment of the crash, so the

[Bug 62123] Re: Geyes preferences window too small

2008-04-30 Thread Diego Ongaro
I just tried it out in a hardy vm (screenshot attached).

Ideally, the default vertical size would be increased and the order of
the themes would have some sort of logic.

I'm not sure it's worth any more effort, though. I think it'd be fine to
close this bug now.

Thanks,
Diego

I don't see that this is a bug, you tried to open a corrupt CSV file in

file. Was the file created by OpenOffice.org, or else whatever created
the buggy file is where you should be filing this bug.

Thanks,

[Bug 224544] [NEW] nautilus dav:// protocol [8.04]

2008-04-30 Thread dynnamitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When accessing a DAV resource from Nautilus (in the Go To: fiel) the following
error pops up:
-
Couldn't display dav://localhost:8088/webdav/db.
Error: HTTP Error: No+resource+or+collection+found
Please select another viewer and try again.
--
(Tesing the same url with 'cadaver' in a shell works fine)

BUT auto-magically there is mounted an shourtcut in the left sidebar (at the
top), and when I click it I can access the DAV.
I can open files directly into gedit for instance.. BUT I cannot save them .

None of the above issues was present in Gutsy.

Howto test:
1) Download and install exist-db: http://exist-db.org/download.html (
eXist-setup-1.2.0-rev7233.jar
2) Start exist with '/bin/server.sh'
3) Dav should now be availiable at http://localhost:8088/webdav/db

[Bug 224531] Re: Cannot compile on amd64

2008-04-30 Thread Edgard Pineda
a ha! when I search for *.a files executing:

# find . -name '*.a'
./debian/tmp/usr/lib64/libflaim.a
./build/linux-x86-64/release/lib64/static/libflaim.a

I see the problem is the directory lib64. Then I correct the following
files:

debian/libflaim-dev.install

usr/include/*
usr/lib*/lib*.a
usr/lib*/pkgconfig/*
usr/lib*/lib*.so

debian/libflaim.install

usr/lib*/libflaim.so*

debian/libflaim4.1.install

usr/lib*/libflaim*.so.*

But then I got following new error :(

dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: debian/libflaim4.1/usr/lib64/libflaim.so.4.1 shouldn't
be linked with libdl.so.2 (it uses none of its symbols).
dh_gencontrol

Whell... after some googling I found the last solution: edit
debian/control and add amd64 at the end of the lines beginning with
Architecture like this:

Architecture: i386 amd64

yeesss! finaly I got:

../libflaim-dev_4.9.966-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
../libflaim4.1_4.9.966-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
../libflaim_4.9.966-0ubuntu1_amd64.changes

[Bug 187048] Re: virDomainCreateLinux() failed Timed out while reading console startup output

2008-04-30 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Updated patch attached.

This is a minimally-invasive patch that tests for read/write access to
/dev/kvm at VM-creation time. If that access fails, an error message
pops up, noting the permission/ownership problem, and suggesting an
appropriate sudo adduser ... kvm command to solve it.

This is far simpler than the previous patch (which would actually
attempt to do the adduser) in the interest of potentially attaining an
SRU-approval for Hardy's .1 release.

[Bug 69124] Re: Ubuntu Edgy upgrade crashes when the crux theme is used during the upgrade

2008-04-30 Thread Brian Murray
I've recreated the crash but not been able to test the package in
-proposed as the dapper version of update-manager doesn't have a '-p'
switch. How could I go about testing the fix?

[Bug 203527] Re: Clicking on clock applet hangs gnome-panel

2008-04-30 Thread marco.pallotta
I think Sebastien Bacher referred to hardy sru upload
(http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13986760/eds.debdiff) posted in bug #204775.
I think we can follow the building from a debdiff guide
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuPackagingGuide/BuildFromDebdiff) from the wiki
documentation of ubuntu. I haven't tested the patch yet (nor I never used
.debdiff as I am a new .deb user) but I think the steps are:
1) download build-essential fakeroot devscripts
2) download the source of evolution-data-server package (with its libraries)
3) apply the Bacher patch
4) rebuild the package
5) install the new .deb

Backer, can you confirm this?

[Bug 224552] [NEW] Knetworkmanager not working properly in Hardy

2008-04-30 Thread errol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

This is a report on my workaround to the problem described. I still
cannot get knetmanager to work manually. I have tried this on two
different computers - one at home with direct internet connection and at
work on a computer connected to a domain.

I wrote this question on several forums and as I have now solved the problem
i.e. successfully loaded Kubuntu with internet connection onto my computer. As
the problem (from my point of view) is no longer I want to detail the problem
and the solution I used for the benefit of others AND to thank the many people
on these various forums that gave advice which helped me and set me on the
right track. So first of all thank you all!
The problem I came across:
I installed Kubuntu and was unable to set up my static IP address in order to
connect to the internet. I tried every possible way that I knew or was advised
to try on various forums.
The main problem was with knetworkmanager. I could not get it to allow me to
get into manual setup. What happened was that when going to knetworkmanager and
trying to operate manual setup I was asked for my password which I typed in.
The request closed and then NOTHING happened. No reaction at all from the
manager. So I was unable to setup my static IP that way.
I then tried to write my static IP in /etc/network/interfaces. My static IP
starts with 10.* etc. but the static IP number I got when restarting my
computer was 198.* etc. No connection to what I had tried. All this was on a
wired connection.
In desperation I installed Ubuntu and had NO problems with setting up my static
IP. I prefer the Kubuntu interface and programs so I tried this:
I then installed KDE4 using
sudo apt-get install KDE4
After seeing that KDE4 worked properly I went to the next step an completely
installed Kubuntu from within Ubuntu
apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
I am very satisfied with the results although I haven't tried out everything
yet. I particular I haven't tried knetworkmanager but when I get home from work
I will do just that.
I intend to send this letter as a bug notice to Kubuntu if I can find out
how(where) to do this.
I hope this can help others as I was helped here.
Errol

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-04-30 Thread ethanay
Dell XPS m1330 laptop running hardy 8.04 with latest

none of the ugly fixes above or others that I have encountered elsewhere
have worked; HDD apm value (hdparm -I /dev/sda) after resume from
suspend or hibernate persistently resets to 128. I get about 5-8
load/unloads per minute. I have tried adding scripts to /etc/acpi/*.d/,
tried the etc/pm/disk fixes, and tried the hacks which sync hdparm
values with ac/battery modes while enabling laptop-mode via acpi-
support. Nothing seems to be working in hardy where it worked in gutsy.
so i am still entering hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda manually after each resume
from suspend or hibernate.

Is this a separate bug or part of the same bug and bug fix? Would any
more information be helpful?

thanks,
ethan

PS seems to me a lot of people have been blaming each-other. This isn't
*just* a hardware issue, and it's not *just* a software issue. For my
drive, a default APM value of 128 would be sane IF the software
operating on it was written with that value in mind. But it wasn't.
Likewise, Ubuntu's frequent disk access would be sane IF the hardware
it's operating on was programmed with that in mind. But it wasn't. The
incompatibility isn't really anyone's fault unless we can somehow get
hardware manufacturers and Linux software developers to agree on shared
specs. It would be wonderful if something like this was in the works.

But in the mean time, the hardware defaults can be changed via software,
which leaves the burden of closing the insanity gap solely on Linux
software developers by a) changing the hardware defaults and b) finding
ways to sync hdd i/o requests from the OS and other software if/whenever
the APM is set aggressively. Without that, we'd just be killing our
hard drives and reducing performance without any added power saving or
bump protection.

[Bug 221920] Re: Compositing results in garbage on the screen for Intel 82815, shouldn't be turn on by default

2008-04-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ludwik, thanks for the report. It doesn't surprise me that there are
some compiz issues with i815 since it's a fairly old chipset. I've gone
ahead and forwarded this issue upstream at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15763.

Would you mind subscribing to that bug in bugzilla, in case upstream has
questions or needs additional questions, so they can reach you directly?

Blacklisting i815 from compiz for 8.04.1 sounds like a good strategy;
hopefully meanwhile upstream can get a real fix we can include for
Intrepid.

[Bug 223965] Re: Tar lzma nautilus default opening

2008-04-30 Thread A. Walton
That's pretty much what I figured. This is not a bug, but a
configuration error. Application/x-extension-lzma is not the valid
Content-type for a file with an LZMA extension (should be
application/x-lzma). Check that you don't have an entry in
~/.local/share/mime/globs for LZMA (and either remove it or comment it
out if it exists).

Closing this as invalid. Please use answers if you have any more
support-related questions.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

hard drives may change from sda to sdb. Coul you please inlcude

Hello Brian,

I am far away from home, so I cannot answer quickly.

Indeed it was odd to revert to /dev notation but I used it to explore
what happened (remember that I was in a 'critical' situation where
nothing was working, bad partitions, bad swap, no /home..., and at that
moment I did not know vol_id).

Mounting by hand /dev/sda2 or /dev/sdb2 to /home was a quick way to
verify that the problems were linked to the identification of the drives.

Have a nice day,

Alain

[Bug 222322] Re: IDE hard drives not visible

2008-04-30 Thread scananza
I've checked out the jumper, it's correctly closed on MAster; the cable
has the long edge connector attached to the MB and the opposite side is
stuck into the CDROM, the central connector is free.

For the sake of (computer) science, I can try if setting it to SLave or
CableSelect makes it work... :^D

Later on today I will compile kernel 2.6.25 myself and see if the
problem persists even with the latest IDE driver.

[Bug 224562] [NEW] pdfcrack description/docs should mention other ways to access pdfs

2008-04-30 Thread Peter Cordes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pdfcrack

The pdf encryption key only depends on the user password (and information that
is stored in the file, like the hash of the owner pwd.)
e.g. see http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Adobe/Gallery/anon21jul01-pdf-encryption.txt

If it's not illegal[1], pdfcrack should point out that if you don't
need a password to view the pdf, it can be completely decrypted by e.g.
pdftk with the password checking commented out. Enforcing the owner
password in PDF encryption is entirely optional, in a technical sense.
The legal sense is another matter, and even talking about things, let
alone distributing software that ignores restrictions, might be illegal
in some parts of the world.

I wish I'd known this; I wouldn't have tried pdfcrack, since I just
want to merge some user pass= PDFs.

[1] DMCA in the US, and all those garbage laws spreading to other
countries too.

[Bug 29624] Re: Splash screen on bootup takes minutes to disappear

2008-04-30 Thread Heiowge
My monitor can't display the startup screen - it hasn't been able to
since I put Ubuntu 7.04 on it! My monitor probably can't handle the
resolution. So it goes blank and displays a message about the monitor
being unable to handle the screen resolution and then loads the login
page. This doesn't take long normally, but it seems to hang on this
forever since I went to hardy.

I normally have to ctrl-alt-backspace before it loads the login screen.

[Bug 224561] [NEW] DVD drive errors in hardy

2008-04-30 Thread lesshaste
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy and now have a number of problems. The
first is that in any VT I get (copied from dmesg)

[ 23.125524] ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf300-0xf307, BIOS settings: hdaio, hdbio
[ 24.531732] hda: BENQ DVD DD DW1640, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
[ 24.531767] hda: host max PIO4 wanted PIO255(auto-tune) selected PIO4
[ 24.532076] hda: UDMA/33 mode selected

[ 24.532662] hda: task_in_intr: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand }

[ 35.863983] hda: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete
DataRequest Error }

and then the errors are repeated over and over again

If I reboot using the old 2.6.22 kernel (instead of the hardy 2.6.24
kernel) these errors go away.

For comparison this is what the hda lines in dmesg look like in 2.6.22

[ 22.630386] ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf300-0xf307, BIOS settings: hda:pio, hdb:pio

[ 35.217427] hda: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache,
UDMA(33)

So it looks like a kernel driver problem at first sight.

[Bug 174805] Re: [gutsy] graceful-stop fails when apache listens on more than one socket

Please, fix this bug soon.

Is not only a problem with reload, but also affects normal operation as
apache kills its childs acording to MaxRequestsPerChild and
orMaxSpareServers, making Ubuntu completely unusable as a production web
server.

I this continue to be unsolved, I will be forced to move away from
ubuntu, and I'm very confortable with this distribution till now.

There is already a patch for this in apache bug
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=42829. Why is not
being applied to ubuntu's apache?
