I am having the same problem using Hardy Heron with all updates available.
There´s only one folder on our company network which is not accessible for me,

Getting the following error:
The folder contents could not be displayed.
Sorry, couldn't display all the contents of folder_name: Invalid argument

[Bug 230393] [NEW] Mysql socket file breaks PHP/Perl/etc...

2008-05-14 Thread Ciro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

Many projects using (perl) DBI and (php) adodb database APIs are looking
for the mysql socket file in /tmp/mysql.sock rather than
/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock.

Changing the .cnf file to return the sock file to /tmp may cause
problems with projects already modified to deal with the change. The
current workaround is to symlink the socket file so that it is in both
locations, but this tends to get wiped out when /tmp is cleared
(generally on boot).

The workaround I'm using is a local rc file to create the link, but with
a minor addition to init.d/mysql the workaround can be made transparent.
A minor issue for any one machine, but something of a nuisance when
running several dozen Ubuntu servers.

[Bug 230393] Re: Mysql socket file breaks PHP/Perl/etc...

2008-05-14 Thread Stephan Hermann
TBH,

I think it's more a bug in the perl/php stuff then in mysql.
The socket file should sit in /var/run/mysqld and not in /tmp/
More detail:
We should fix the packages which are looking for the socket file in /tmp then
symlinking the socket file to /tmp.
It's a good workaround for the time now, but not for the future.

But that's me...what about our -server/ core devs? Any advise?

Uhm, yeah, Debian/Ubuntu have had the MySQL socket there for ages. Any
packaged application looking for it in the wrong place should be fixed.
Any non-packaged app is being installed/run by someone who knows what
they're doing (in theory) and can specify the socket location manually.

1. If the process of updating is still running even with 'error messages' - let
it.
2. Even while updating I had access to Firefox to 'search' for 'now what...?'
3. If only the process of installing WinXP SP3 were 1% as pleasant/reliable as

[Bug 187473] Re: [Hardy] Update from alpha 3 to alpha 4 broke ssh connections to openbsd boxes

2008-05-14 Thread Steve Langasek
It's not clear to me that there is an Ubuntu bug here - clearly the
firewall on the server wasn't allowing through some of the packets
associated with the connection, but those packets constitute legitimate
traffic, so isn't this a bug on the server side - with the workaround
actually a correct fix for a misconfiguration? Is there an explanation
somewhere of why the behavior of the ssh client should be considered
wrong/buggy?

Great, I am happy that it has also been fixed.

However, this the second time that this duplication happened to me and

am I doing something wrong?

[Bug 230174] Re: [Gutsy] ssh installation results in COMPROMISED keys

What version of libssl0.9.8 do you have installed? If older than 0.9.8e-
5ubuntu3.2 (such as if you have 0.9.8e-5ubuntu3) you will continue to
generate bad keys. This is irrespective of what version of openssh-

libssl0.9.8 is 0.9.8.g-4ubuntu2

No idea why my version is the newer, other than perhaps the fact that
this machine is a Dapper == Edgy == Fiesty == Gutsy updated/upgraded
machine and at one point I may have attempted to install a Hardy package
that brought it in.

I'll bring in 0.9.8e-5ubutu3.1 and see if that makes a difference

Well via Synaptic the only version is

libssl0.9.8-dbg:
Depends: libssl0.9.8 (=0.9.8e-5ubuntu3.2) but 0.9.8g-4ubuntu3 is to be
installed

So that didn't work. Try again:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/i386/libssl0.9.8/download

Not Found

The requested URL
/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openssl/libssl0.9.8_0.9.8e-5ubuntu3.1_i386.deb was
not found on this server.

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy-security main
added, and the result is:

$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall libssl0.9.8
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Reinstallation of libssl0.9.8 is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.

I think I'll use this other one in the future in case I lost it again:

But I still cannot reinstall mysql to work on Ubuntu 8.04, what should I

minor changes and build has been tested on my PPA for Hardy:

* Fix the mistake in the debian/control file
* Change the debian/copyright file for a more appropriate one for packages
under GPL, as requested by Till Kamppeter in bug 219509
* debian/rules: Apply the egal permissions for /usr/Brother/inf in
brother-lpr-drivers-common than all other packages, this fixes wrong
permissions and owner for the /usr/Brother/inf folder which can prevent Brother
printer drivers to work correctly.

[Bug 198600] Re: attempted to add a ipp printer, clicked verify and crashed

I don't know if this is related.

When I try to add a printer via Iprint, I receive a munmap_chunk() error and
Firefox exits.
Hardy 8.04 Release with all updates installed and vanilla Hardy with no updates
installed.

I tried the following:
Gnome
KDE 3.5
XFCE4
Firefox 3.x
Firefox 2.0.0.x
Galeon
Konqueror
Epiphany
Changed theme
With and without customisations and before and after updates.
Iprint in terminal – iprntcmd
Check for later version of iprint client – none.

Could this be a faulty c library causing this eg glibc?

Thank you very much,
Craig.

[Bug 227806] Re: system crash with hardy

2008-05-14 Thread dreamstogo
I am also experiencing this. Total lock up, nothing moves..

It seems to happen most frequently in Firefox when making a mouse click,
either right, left or scroll. It doesn't happen if I don't touch the
system.

The only way out is a system reset button. Then Ubuntu does a disk
check, most often than not automatic fsck fails and I get sent to the
console. Typing a fsck will fix the problems. Then you have to reboot.

This is TOTALLY unacceptable to a normal user.

To make matters worse, today I got a message saying that GDM could not
be started. Again another reset to get the system back.

Guys, this has to be of a VERY HIGH priority!

Its getting to remind me of the good old windows blue screen days

PS, I posted this also on 214108

[Bug 37828] Re: Text rendered incorrectly in presence of ligatures and justified text

2008-05-14 Thread James Henstridge
This bug is certainly not invalid, so please don't mark it as such.
There was ample evidence of the problem.

The firefox in Hardy is not exhibiting this bug. Firefox does appear to
be using ligatures for editable text for fonts that have them. It does
not appear to be using ligatures for other text, so the rendering
problems on pages that combine fonts-with-ligatures and justified text
are gone. Therefore I'm marking the bug fix released.

Having Firefox use the available ligatures would be nice, but is not
required (it is another problem and probably best tracked upstream).
This is enough to allow Ubuntu's default fonts to contain ligatures
without causing rendering errors.

[Bug 195721] Re: glxinfo crashes after login ( systemfreeze )

2008-05-14 Thread Thespian
I'm getting the same problem as well. None of the solutions I've tried
have seemed to be permanent. System specs and debugging attempts are
here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4817281#post4817281

Nvidia card, and the whole system freezes about 4 seconds after hitting return
on my password. Mouse stops responding, and only hard reset will work. After
re-installing from scratch and removing what I thought might be a bad memory
module the system was fine for days. Then, tonight, I enabled the security
updates, did them all, and rebooted, and now it's back in the same
failure mode as before. I'd love to know which package changed to cause the
problem.

[Bug 126330] Re: KMail: e-mail autocompletion from LDAP source doesn't work

2008-05-14 Thread Paco Orozco
I can confirm this bug, I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy.

ii kdepim-kio-plugins 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3 KDE pim I/O Slaves
ii kdepim-kresources 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3 KDE pim resource plugins
ii libkdepim1a4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3 KDE PIM library
ii kontact 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3 KDE pim application

It was working good on Gutsy, without any problem. It seems, as
mentioned above, a regresion.

The previous workaround didn't solve the bug. Know I can't use auto
completion via LDAP.

Anyone has another workaround?

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-05-14 Thread LimCore

I like Ubuntu and all, and I'm grateful to everyone for the nice work.

But still, unfortunately, Ubuntu is quite buggy.

Number of bugs in main components, and in security is quite bad. Main desktop
applications have serious problems, firefox 3 have issues, GUI doesn't work
very well (xgl-new and Xgl and compiz problems)
and the recent security bugs.

[Bug 216266] Re: Usplash without progress bar on shutdown.

In fact the bug reappears at next reboot (after removing 3 empty lines).

I tried again by adding 3 empty line between [greeter] and [chooser] in
gdm.conf-custom and the bug disappears again. Someone may confirm this
behavior.
