[Bug 230878] Re: Apache 2 produces an OOM after 4 hours using

2008-05-21 Thread Léobaillard
Memory test ? If you mean by this checking th integrity of the physical
memory, I don't think this is where the problem is because I tryied to
change my machine keeping the hard drives and the data and it didn't
changed anything... :( So maybe it's related with apache but not apache
itself ? Maybe it's my configuration ? Maybe it's php ? I don't know
where to start, I don't have any clue appart from the fact that it's
happening only when apache is running... :( I can run a memory test,
just to see, but I don't think it'll be relevant. Other ideas / tracks ?
Again, thank you so much for the interest you give to my problem, I'm
very greatful.

[Bug 205111] Re: likewise-open service does not start automatically

2008-05-21 Thread Neil Mclean
- note all my above comments refer to this situation
a. boot up ubuntu 8.04
b. log in as a local user
c. at the desktop can see likewise-winbindd did start up at system start if I
pull up a terminal and sudo /etc/init.d/likewise-open status
d. then use the likewise-open-gui to join my PC to a domain

Weird things happen on my desktop (see above). syslog (daemon log) is flooded
with warnings (see above).

I did some further testing:
a. boot up ubuntu 8.04
b. log in as local user
c. at the desktop can see likewise-winbindd did start up at system start if I
pull up a terminal and sudo /etc/init.d/likewise-open status
d. then open a terminal window and use the likewise-open-cli to join my PC to
a domain

Same weird things happen on my desktop

Now maybe so far my problem is a user problem - not knowing how to use
likewise-open properly. Because in all the above scenarios I had never
been able to log in to the domain from the ubuntu gui (gdm) screen.
Always failed. All I knew was that likewise-winbindd was running and
thought that was all was needed.

I did some further reading and testing:
a. boot up ubuntu 8.04
b. at the gdm GUI login screen I CTRL-ALT-F1 to a cli session.
c. in that cli session I initiated a likewise-open-cli domain join. Enter
user password - SUCCESS
d. then CTRL-ALT-F7 back to the gdm login screen and log in with [EMAIL
PROTECTED] and get a successful domain user log on.

Here I notice:
- I have a new desktop as if a first time user. My home directory is
/home/DOMAIN/user (not /home/user)
- Everything works nicely. I see all the domain servers and PC's in
PlacesNetwork
- No problem with the logfile getting flooded with warning messages.
- When I log out no hangs or problems.

Wooohoo!!! So Sweet! Very slick. Very nice.

So I am wondering now if the problems I have in the first scenario
(logged in as local user - using likewise-open CLI or GUI commands to
then join domain) - is because I am doing the wrong thing?

Should I be able to do this? Or am I using likewise-open incorrectly if
I do that?

In summary:
Likewise-open only works properly for me when (as well as having
likewise-winbindd daemon running) I first drop to a command prompt and join to
the domain BEFORE I log in at the gdm GUI

(and perhaps that is how its supposed to work??)

[Bug 59926] Re: DHCP recognizes LAN only minutes after plugging cable

2008-05-21 Thread Jörg Höhle
Sorry, I've had some intermittent hardware failure and was otherwise busy.
I've switched to Hardy now, and there the system behaves as the user expects.
I believe this comes from the switch to dhcdbd, i.e. DBus is driving DHCP and
immediately started/stopped each time a particular interfaces goes up or down.
In previous distributions, dhclient lived completely on its own, sleeping for
long time before bothering to check whether something had changed in between.

Thus on one hand, you can treat the problem as fixed.
On the other hand, Dapper is still a supported platform, where the problem
exists. But I don't know what the Ubuntu development guidelines say about
fixing problems in an old distribution.

For Dapper:
Does it work if roaming is turned on?
I'm not aware of any roaming with Dapper.
Does this seem to affect a particular network card?
No, because the new hardware behaves the same when booting Dapper.
What is the DHCP server?
I found no mention of it in /var/log/ or the lease file. How to tell?

[Bug 214556] Re: [Hardy] Can't share files

2008-05-21 Thread steve
I have been using ubuntu for years now. I have had an interesting experience
with Hardy and file sharing. My home network if fairly complicated - I have a
seanix pentium 4 1.5gb ram dual harddrive which dual boots xp / ubuntu. My new
desktop = dell amd dual core 2gb ram dual boot vista/ubuntu. I have an old sony
vaio laptop with ext cdrom, running ubuntu. My wife has a lenovo laptop running
xp and a dell desktop running vista home premium. Needless to say I have spent
days, weeks, maybe months keeping everything working over the last several
years with each upgrade - I am a ubuntu junky. The old desktop(Seanix) has been
my file server for the rest of the house actually running xp with ubuntu
7.10(most recently) in a vmware virtual machine as the actual file server -
lastest version all working well was gutsy. By working well, I mean every
computer had access to our photos and music and movie collection with no
password and my wife and I both had home folders available on all the machines
with password protection. The only reason my server ran xp with virtual ubuntu
was my old printer wouldn't work with ubuntu, nor would my scanner.
My printer broke so I got a new one, I got a new scanner -carefully choosen to
work with linux.
So now is the time to get rid of the last of windows.
I downloaded hardy heron i386 desktop and burned one cd.
I installed it on my newer Dell desktop to try it out. Printer, scanner work
and share. File sharing works out of the box. All looks great.
So I use the same install cd on the Seanix, Install hardy heron on its own
partition with a separate partition for the home folder. AND file sharing is
broken. Non of the folders are shared properly, even the ubuntu machines don't
share well any more. I got all of the error messages about net usershare =
permission denied etc. I learned about net usershare.I edited my
smb.conf(repeatedly) I did the logout/login and even reboot suggestions and
still NO proper sharing. I tried all combinations of sharing options after R
clicking nautilus folders. There seemed no rhyme or reason to what happened.
Allow guest = still need password, no guest - everyone had access to my home
folder.

It is interesting that some users install hardy and everything works out
of the box. Other install hardy and have a nightmare with sharing. I
have had both - the only difference being the machine that I installed
hardy on.

I am not a computer expert, but I hope that this information gets into the
hands of someone who can make some sense of it.
I have now reinstalled Gutsy on the Seanix - file server and my home network is
back to HAPPY with all working well.

I would be pleased to send any specific information about the machines,
installation, or anything else if someone with the knowhow can help sort out
this problem.
I am now windows free but would like to have hardy running on all my machines.
Thanks for your patience with this long post - I hope that it helps ubuntu and
hardy improve.

[Bug 233853] [NEW] [intrepid]: nmbd fails to start

I assume, that the reason is somewhere in the maintainer scripts, which
must otherwise be good citizens[1], but obviously are not ;).

/etc/samba/smb.ucf-dist last changed on 2008-04-05 14:32, which matches
dpkg.log when samba-common was upgraded (from 3.0.28a-1ubuntu3).

attached: diff between smb.ucf-dist and smb.conf (I might have called a
dpkg-reconfigre samba-common / or samba in between, not too sure if I
backed up smb.conf before or afterwards).

anything else you need?

P.S.: In case it should matter for maintainer scripts/default config:
I'm briding eth0 and eth1 to br0.

this sentence before, but like it *g*.

[Bug 232416] [NEW] debconf upgrade: xargs Assertion `bc_ctl.arg_max = (131072-2048)' failed.

2008-05-21 Thread Grant Grundler
Public bug reported:

Errors were encountered while processing:

So xargs was hosed by something in the upgrade. NFC. I then replaced the use of
xargs since it was only a few files that were to be removed:
   while read x
   do
 rm -f $x
   done

I have NFC why xargs failed and honestly don't care. debconf failing
during a dist-upgrade just shouldn't be possible and not using xargs
reduces the odds of that by a bit. awk b0rkage is still a bigger risk
(more code than xargs I expect).

[Bug 232417] [NEW] Scrambled Fonts in Firefox 3 and Gimp after TT Font Installation

2008-05-21 Thread bobp
Public bug reported:

After installing some TT Fonts from my Windows box, the fonts in Firefox
3B5 and Gimp 2.4 are scrambled. In the Gimp, all of the text characters
have been replaced by small rectangles. In Firefox, all of the menu
selections are invisible. All of the menus appear to have no
characters.

When running these programs from the command line, I get Pango Warnings
that Pango failed to create a cairo scaled font. Reinstalling doesn't
help. Deleting the configuration files for the applications doesn't
help. Deleting the offending font doesn't help either -- the same
problem just crops up again with another font name.

[Bug 221229] Re: nm-editor shows password in wrong field

2008-05-21 Thread Chris Lockfort
Nevermind, I'm wrong. I meant to say nm-edit anyway, and it appears that it's
part of the network-manager package. I thought it was its own package...
I'm looking now to see if this was fixed upstream anywhere.

** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: nedit
+ Binary package hint: network-manager

I got really excited with the new wireless network editor, but I found a
problem for WPA networks. On a WPA enterprise network, the identity
password is being shown in the private key password field. I have nm-
  editor 0.6.6-0ubuntu5 on Ubuntu 8.04.

I'm sending an attachment with the printscreen. It shows a password on
private key password field, but I don't have one for this network, and
doesn't show the identity password, that is saved for this network. If I
show passwords (no printscreen for obvious reasons), the private key
  password shows the identity password.

[Bug 228953] Re: telnet disconnects

2008-05-21 Thread Harald
** Description changed:

I work in networking and use telnet frequently. Most switches I telnet have
very long configurations (+500 lines) which, in the case of Alcatel, are not
divided by pages (like when you get --MORE-- at the end of each page and hit
the spacebar for the next page, just like when you issue the command command
| more).
What happens is that when it reaches the line 300-400 aprox. I get
disconnected. This happens always, no matter what telnet client I use.
I tried the following telnet clients:

  - telnet from the console
  - putty for linux (GUI)
  - run telnet from cmd within a VM. Tried both VMWare and VirtualBox.

  Why this happens?

I can observe (comparing to Windows native) that the configuration is
arriving very slow to my system when running ubuntu, as if I was
limiting my bandwidth to 4800bps. A configuration of about 500 lines
will take about 8-12 seconds to show on my screen, just before it
disconnects, when on Windows it will take less than a second.

  My ubuntu release:
  Description:Ubuntu 7.10
  Release:7.10

Version of telnet I am using:
  telnet:
Installed: 0.17-35ubuntu1
Candidate: 0.17-35ubuntu1
Version table:
   *** 0.17-35ubuntu1 0
  500 http://ftp.hosteurope.de gutsy/main Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
+
+ UPDATE: A few days after performing the packet capture, I had to travel
+ to the place this switch was located. While on site, I had no issues
+ performing telnet on the switch. I therefore assume all this is related
+ to latency--a very small one, as we only have 13ms to this site.
+
+ Its been several days since I posted this bug... why haven't I received
+ at least a confirmation that this is being viewed/processed or whatever?
+
+ I really need this fixed if I want to keep this OS. Thank you!

2008-05-21 Thread Chris Lockfort
changed to network-manager-applet, this isn't about the backend network-manager.
Fix should be easy as switching these two labels
widget class=GtkLabel id=wpa-eap-private-key-passwd-label
widget class=GtkLabel id=wpa-eap-password-label
somewhere in the GUI code.
I'll do it when/if I have time.

http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/#footnote-3
There written:
This camera module is known to be mounted upside-down in some notebooks. There
is currently no documented way to rotate the image at the device level. If you
don't mind holding your computer upside-down, the camera should work fine.

But other people can do (echo 1 /sys/class/video4linux/video0/vflip) and all

[Bug 232420] [NEW] allows passwordless SYSDBA login

2008-05-21 Thread Damyan Ivanov
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: firebird2.0-super

See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=481389 and
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1880

The init.d script exports ISC_PASSWORD into the environment before
starting fbguard. fbguard itself spawns fbserver process without
cleaning environment.

fbserver uses ISC_PASSWORD from the environment when remote connection
does not supply a password. This makes it possible to connect remotely
as SYSDBA user without giving a password.

That last part is already fixed in upstream CVS HEAD, but backporting
the change is reported to be non-trivial.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 188732 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/188732

Uhm, this bug is most definitely not a duplicate of bug #188732. It's
not about whether the cursor blinks or not, but about it appearing as a
block instead of a line.

While we're at it, I'd like to request an underscore style cursor, like
the one used in text mode and the old DOS. But mainly for nostalgic
reasons. ;-)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 232425] [NEW] system-tools-backends doesn't work with policykit 0.8

2008-05-21 Thread James Westby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-tools-backends

Hi,

policykit 0.8 was uploaded yesterday, and in my testing this broke
system-tools-backends. The reason for this was not clear to me, but
a rebuild against the new version solved it.

Attached is a debdiff to perform a no-change rebuild to try and
fix this in intrepid. Please consider uploading it.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 192517] Re: please merge memtest86+ 2.01 from debian unstable - supports additional hardware + important bugfixes

2008-05-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package memtest86+ - 2.01-1ubuntu1

---
memtest86+ (2.01-1ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable, remaining changes:
- debian/control: Add lpia as supported architecture.
- Makefile: Add -fno-stack-protector to CFLAGS, since this package does
  not link against libc.
- Merge basically the same as the one from Saïvann Carignan, thanks for
  your work! LP: #192517
  * Simplify the patch from LP #129614, the preinst is fine in debian, the
postinst needs to check for presence of /boot/grub.
  * Do not call update-grub, but update-grub2. See
http://bugs.debian.org/460080 for details.
  * install ELF image of memtest86+ in the binary package Thanks to Forest
Bond for the patch. (LP: #175720).

memtest86+ (2.01-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (Closes: #468780).
* Serial console now supported as boot parameter (Closes: 308355).
  * Added in README.Debian a pointer to the GRUB Legacy sample config
(Closes: #445517), mentionned that GRUB2 is automatically handled, and
that the make-memtest86+-boot-floppy script uses GRUB Legacy.
  * Call update-grub2 instead of update-grub (Closes: #460080).

[Bug 232430] [NEW] Rhythmbox crashes GDM session changing between songs

2008-05-21 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Rhythmbox crashes all the GDM session, closing all the X when changing
between songs.

This *only happens if you are on another X session*. I suspect the new
ubuntu changes the device permissions because you are on other X
session. When rhythmbox ends playing songs, closes and opens the device,
so the permissions get noticed, and crashes, and all the GDM session
too!!!

I'm using directly the alsa device on sound properties, because with
pulseaudio I don't get any sound on my speakers. Just after boot I can
get it to work, but it ends not working. With pulseaudio this doesn't
happens, the sound get muted instantly on the change.

Steps to reproduce:
1. On System-Preferences-sound Select your sound device directly, not
Autodetect or Pulseaudio.
2. Open rhythmbox, play a song
3. Open a new X session with another user
4. Wait to the song to finish. When rhythmbox tries to change the song, the
other X session will crash and GDM will re-launch a new login screen!

[Bug 232430] Re: Rhythmbox crashes GDM session changing between songs

2008-05-21 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Also I would like to know if there is an option to disable the change of
permissions. At the home computer we have several X sessions oppened,
and if one put music I don't want it to stop when I change to my session
to check mail. I have been looking at the devices but I didn't notice
any change of permissions and I don't know how this is being done.

I need to try.
Freezes happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks, last time yesterday.
Due to the fact it is quite random I have to wait until it happens.

[Bug 221691] Re: Problems with Nautilus / X-server

2008-05-21 Thread jcaya
When I use the normal left mouse button (the one below the touchpad)
the spots return, the desktop icons can no longer be moved and in short
the bug returns. If I click with the mouse buttons below the spacebar
numerous times I can get the bug to disengage in that the new desktop
icons can be moved and the spots do not re-occur but the old ones are
still present and the old desktop icons cannot be moved..

[Bug 232432] [NEW] Slide names reset to default on next launch if saved as Powerpoint.

2008-05-21 Thread Steve Somers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice.org Presentation v2.4.0
openoffice.org-core1:2.4.0-3ubuntu6, Tue Apr 22, 02:27:09 UTC 2008
Hardy Heron 8.04

1) Create new presentation with several slides.
2) Name some or all slides from the default of 'Slide n' to any text string.
3) Save as Microsoft Powerpoint 97/2000/XP .ppt format, and quit Impress.
4) Launch Impress and open presentation.
5) All slides have reverted to 'Slide n' names.

This does NOT happen when saved as .odp file.

Slide names imported from an original Powerpoint file are displayed
correctly, but lost as above if re-saved after editing.

I would be happy to run any tests if that is helpful.

[Bug 110073] Re: Evolution-exchange uses 100% CPU

2008-05-21 Thread Jouke74
Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 AMD64 version.

Same here as well. I also use evolution exchange for my work email
account. As soon as I start typing a new message, one core of my 4200 X2
CPU goes to 100%. It also starts when you try to compose an email from
another program, e.g. Openoffice Word or Firefox. The way to get it back
to normal then is to start and close Evolution itself.

Thank you for reporting this bug. Do you have a smb/cifs share mounted

[Bug 232341] Re: seq24 sequencer does not loop or send events

2008-05-21 Thread Jaakko Sipari
Could you add step by step reproduction instructions so I can test this
on my 32bit Ubuntu Hardy system?

Also please add (at least) this information):
- What synth(s) did you hook up to Seq24?
- Did you create jack midi connections for Seq24 the synth(s) and did you
use an external tool to draw the connections?
- We're all apps started without any parameters?
- Was Seq24 also installed from the Hardy repository and what version was it?
- What does not play through loops actually mean? Does it seem to be playing
(in the GUI) but no events are sent or no sound is heard from the synth(s)?

 Thank you in advance :)

[Bug 133383] Re: desktop effekts does not work on ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

2008-05-21 Thread dominik
thx
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=764633
looks like compiz is disabled on all laptops using the -ati driver, too.

is there a list of devices availible, which should run compiz ?
this would help to determine if this is a bug or a feature.

[Bug 232435] [NEW] middle-clicking URL keeps focus on the URL bar

2008-05-21 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I'm using 3.0 on Hardy.

When you enter some text on the URL bar and open one item from the
dropdown list to a new tab, the result differs depending on the method
you follow:

-If you press alt+enter, the focus is given back to the page itself so pressing
down scrolls down the page.
-If you middle-click the item, the URL bar retains the focus so pressing down
just brings the dropdown list again.

Of course, you can only notice it after returning to the OLD tab. In the
newly created tab the page always has the focus.

** Affects: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2 Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for your reply. I've already enabled apport but I can only reboot it
later in the afternoon. Now I've got one question. Where can I get cvs access
to the current gedit version? I guess, I can fix it quickly if I have g++ -g3
build.

2 GlenJohnson
full url for about 200 php files - i will work for eternity =))) anyway - thanx
for hint =))
