[Bug 218899] Re: upgrade to hardy: user openldap is not added to group sasl
I can confirm this. While this setup doesn't seem too common, it's certainly a valid and supported one. This needs to be adressed on the slapd side, so reassigning this. The suggested fix (adduser openldap sasl) is quite simple, won't cause any regressions, but does give the slapd process some more priviledges. However, giving daemons access to /etc/sasldb2 is what the sasl group is _for_, after all. An alternative might be to force use of saslauthd, provide an configuration upgrade path, test thoroughly, and document that direct access to sasldb2 is no longer supported, I'd really recommend the former, though. :) ** Changed in: openldap2.3 (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: cyrus-sasl2 = openldap2.3 Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- upgrade to hardy: user openldap is not added to group sasl https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218899 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openldap2.3 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 237391] Re: ssh-keygen should default to dsa not rsa
Neal said: I agree that using a longer default key length in RSA (and in DSA also) is a good idea at this point. I agree on RSA, but note that keys longer than 1024 bits are not permitted by the DSS. From past conversations with people who have better Real Cryptographer credentials than I, I understand that this is because there are other avenues of attack that do not scale with key size (at least not in the same way), so there's little point in longer keys. -- ssh-keygen should default to dsa not rsa https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237391 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 237391] Re: ssh-keygen should default to dsa not rsa
I disagree, sorry. Other people have already pointed out a number of reasons. You mention that RSA needs a larger key size, but note that ssh-keygen already defaults to 2048-bit RSA keys. The main reason why DSA used to be preferred by many people was that the RSA algorithm was subject to patents. Those patents have since expired. If you think you can make a solid cryptographic argument that DSA should be the default, then you should make that argument on openssh-unix-dev (see http://www.openssh.org/list.html) rather than here. I don't feel that your argument is solid based on what I've seen, so I would rather not be in the position of forwarding it myself. A number of the links you posted refer to performance considerations. I rather doubt that this is or should be considered relevant for SSH keys. ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Status: New = Won't Fix -- ssh-keygen should default to dsa not rsa https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237391 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 90378] Re: Should make downloaded files-read only
I also find this change highly annoying. I guess I understand why people who are new to Linux would not understand that saving their important files in /tmp is bad. But to people who have used Linux for a long time and are accustom to the old functionality this is really intrusive. For myself I have lots of reports that are downloaded from the web or email. I open these reports in open office, change the sorting or formatting to take a look at the data, then close the file. I don't care about the changes that I have made, I just wanted to look at the data a different way for the moment. So it works out really well that these files are saved to /tmp and eventually automatically deleted. Since Openoffice does not allow you to change anything about a file when its read only, not even change the sort order, I have to open the file, save it (in /tmp), just to change the sort order. I am okay with the default functionality the way it is for the Linux newbies, but I need an option in both Firefox and Thunderbird that allows me to use the applications like I have for years. Does anyone know of a way to do this? [Bug 178953] Re: compiz doesn't start if metacity compositor is enabled
I am no expert at this, but the problem seems to be quite simple: xrender_unmanage_screen in src/compositor/compositor-xrender.c always calls meta_screen_unset_cm_selection which calls XSetSelectionOwner with None as the owner. It should only do this when giving up the compositor selection manually (ICCCM 2.3.1), but instead also does it when called by meta_screen_free. By setting the selection owner to None, compiz finds that XGetSelectionOwner does not return the window which it set as the owner and aborts. Also, the convention compiz uses (set the selection then check it to verify success) seems to be recommended at the bottom of ICCCM 2.1. -- compiz doesn't start if metacity compositor is enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/178953 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is quite a time-killer for me, as I move from coffee shop to home every day. What is more, I flip the manual wireless switch on the laptop, or turn off wireless on nm-applet, then return them back on and the non-existent connections are still showing! nm-applet must a) be keeping its own records somewhere, other than what iwlist is getting its information from, and b) is not auto-updating for up to 1/2 hour at a time. [Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue
Thomas, it's not the fonts which cause these issues, it's the fontconfig configuration on your system, which prefers certain fonts over others in specific situations. As the ja_JP setting in fontconfig-voodoo is optimized for Japanese users who do not use extended Latin characters, this is indeed expected behavior. If you prefer DejaVu or any other font fir Latin script, I suggest that you copy /etc/fonts/conf.avail/69 -language-selector-ja-jp.conf to ~/.fonts.conf, then edit this file and add the DejaVu or other font entries at the top of each font list for serif, sans-serif and monospace. [Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue
Hi Arne, thanks so much for the comment! You are absolutely right, deinstalling the Chinese fonts is just a workaround. For the moment at least it works. :-) Indeed I had a look at the documentation of this XML format that time, but I thought this takes at least 1-2 hours reading the docs. I understand this XML gives you all possibility to define you preferences, but I wished there is a simple dialogue to maintain at least a simple list of preferred fonts. (maybe a future release :-)) I think I'll probably give it a try when I have a little time, because the default choice of Japanese fonts is quite bad. Interestingly I don't find this a problem any more. Appologies for forgetting to come back and say this! This was a problem for me on Gutsy but now I'm on Hardy it's not anymore. However... I have switched to a Nvidia graphics card from an onboard intel one and I now have two monitors in twinview. I guess these changes could have made a difference. I'm also running the 64bit version of Ubuntu, although the citrix client I'm running is only available in a 32bit version. The citrix client I'm using is version 10.6.115659. I don't know which version I was running on Gutsy. I'm running the desktop cube (although only with two sides so it's more a desktop plane really) and I can switch between the sides and I don't loose my citrix windows. [Bug 234720] Re: wrong UUID in menu.lst after upgrade to hardy
I had the problem re-occur with todays upgrade to 2.4.16.18. despite the fact /etc/blkid.tab had the correct entries. This led me to investigate the matter in more detail. I think I SOLVED it as a non-bug. Here is what I found I noticed that the kopt and groot options in my /boot/grub/menu.lst still had the invalid hd and UUID options. (The fact that a # appears at the beginning does not mean that these are commented out. Apparently you need a ## for comments) relevant diff: # kopt=root=UUID=11364fdf-db87-4d3c-a385-0d710cba8a8f ro //correct --- # kopt=root=UUID=824f1f6c-3d18-4cac-84b3-12d3a5867e4c ro // incorrect 74c74 # groot=(hd0,0) //correct --- # groot=(hd0,7) // incorrect Simply deleting menu.lst and running update-grub will generate a new menu.lst with the correct kopt and groot options. Please note that you probably will want to edit the new menu.lst. An pre-existing menu.lst with the INCORRECT kopt and kgroot options will trigger the reported problems. and a menu.lst with CORRECT options behaves as expected. In my case, I should have modified/deleted menu.lst after transferring the system from one HD to the other. I therefore think this is NOT A BUG and suggest closing this bug report. -- wrong UUID in menu.lst after upgrade to hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234720 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

:) ** Changed in: openldap2.3 (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: cyrus-sasl2 = openldap2.3 Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- upgrade to hardy: user openldap is not added to group sasl https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218899 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
