[Bug 218899] Re: upgrade to hardy: user openldap is not added to group sasl

2008-06-06 Thread Philipp Kaluza
I can confirm this. While this setup doesn't seem too common, it's certainly a
valid and supported one.
This needs to be adressed on the slapd side, so reassigning this.

The suggested fix (adduser openldap sasl) is quite simple, won't cause any
regressions, but does give the slapd process some more priviledges.
However, giving daemons access to /etc/sasldb2 is what the sasl group is
_for_, after all.

An alternative might be to force use of saslauthd, provide an
configuration upgrade path, test thoroughly, and document that direct
access to sasldb2 is no longer supported,

I'd really recommend the former, though. :)

[Bug 237391] Re: ssh-keygen should default to dsa not rsa

2008-06-06 Thread Colin Watson
Neal said: I agree that using a longer default key length in RSA (and
in DSA also) is a good idea at this point. I agree on RSA, but note
that keys longer than 1024 bits are not permitted by the DSS. From past
conversations with people who have better Real Cryptographer credentials
than I, I understand that this is because there are other avenues of
attack that do not scale with key size (at least not in the same way),
so there's little point in longer keys.

[Bug 237391] Re: ssh-keygen should default to dsa not rsa

2008-06-06 Thread Colin Watson
I disagree, sorry. Other people have already pointed out a number of
reasons. You mention that RSA needs a larger key size, but note that
ssh-keygen already defaults to 2048-bit RSA keys.

The main reason why DSA used to be preferred by many people was that the
RSA algorithm was subject to patents. Those patents have since expired.

If you think you can make a solid cryptographic argument that DSA should
be the default, then you should make that argument on openssh-unix-dev
(see http://www.openssh.org/list.html) rather than here. I don't feel
that your argument is solid based on what I've seen, so I would rather
not be in the position of forwarding it myself.

A number of the links you posted refer to performance considerations. I
rather doubt that this is or should be considered relevant for SSH keys.

[Bug 237391] manpage correction

2008-06-06 Thread Lars Noodén
@Colin:

Ok. I see enough guessing in the postings here, including mine, that
expert advice is needed. Where can we find an authoritative statement
from People Who Have Better Real Cryptographer Credentials as to a 'best
practice' for key type and key size? The manpage at least should
provide a concise summary of best practices or point the way to an
authoritative document.

+1 for _not_ using saslauthd. The first option only changes one line in

Furthermore, saslauthd recommends against using the sasldb backend (see

[Bug 237823] [NEW] linkedin links don't work

2008-06-06 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

After logging into www.linkedin.com, some of the links don't work, most
notably the 'edit profile' link. It also seems to ask me to log in
repeatedly when pressing links, which seems to indicate some kind of
cookie problem.

The site seems to work fine using the webkit-based 'Web' browser on my
Nokia E90 (Symbian/s60).

The problem is seen on a fresh and up-to-date installation of Ubuntu
8.04 (Hardy Heron), and 3.0b5.

Re: [Bug 225361] Re: Superuser cannot access ~/.gvfs folder when mounted

2008-06-06 Thread Stephan van Ingen
what about --exclude=~/.gvfs ?

2008/6/5 Chris Hines [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I am by no means an expert in development, but I've been getting around
this by adding --exclude /home/.../.gvfs. It's worked, although it's a
pain to backup more than one home account at a time. I'm not sure if
this is relevant at all to the correction of this bug.

[Bug 90378] Re: Should make downloaded files-read only

2008-06-06 Thread Eric
I also find this change highly annoying. I guess I understand why
people who are new to Linux would not understand that saving their
important files in /tmp is bad. But to people who have used Linux for a
long time and are accustom to the old functionality this is really
intrusive. For myself I have lots of reports that are downloaded from
the web or email. I open these reports in open office, change the
sorting or formatting to take a look at the data, then close the file.
I don't care about the changes that I have made, I just wanted to look
at the data a different way for the moment. So it works out really well
that these files are saved to /tmp and eventually automatically deleted.
Since Openoffice does not allow you to change anything about a file when
its read only, not even change the sort order, I have to open the file,
save it (in /tmp), just to change the sort order. I am okay with the
default functionality the way it is for the Linux newbies, but I need an
option in both Firefox and Thunderbird that allows me to use the
applications like I have for years.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Thanks

Eric

yes indeed because...

a) octave V3.01 is a only bug-fix release ov V3.0.0 without new
functionality, so it should be definitively better

b) the toolbox-packages of octave are not in the ubuntu-repository, they
have to be downloaded from the octaves project homepage where they are
only available for 3.01

[Bug 178953] Re: compiz doesn't start if metacity compositor is enabled

2008-06-06 Thread crdlb
I am no expert at this, but the problem seems to be quite simple:
xrender_unmanage_screen in src/compositor/compositor-xrender.c always
calls meta_screen_unset_cm_selection which calls XSetSelectionOwner with
None as the owner. It should only do this when giving up the compositor
selection manually (ICCCM 2.3.1), but instead also does it when called
by meta_screen_free. By setting the selection owner to None, compiz
finds that XGetSelectionOwner does not return the window which it set as
the owner and aborts.

Also, the convention compiz uses (set the selection then check it to
verify success) seems to be recommended at the bottom of ICCCM 2.1.

[Bug 150888] Re: nm-applet not refresh networks

2008-06-06 Thread rich
This is quite a time-killer for me, as I move from coffee shop to home
every day. Today it took about 30 minutes before nm-applet rescanned...
just long enough for me to figure out how to do it manually from the
command line (nm-applet seems to have some spite programmed in it).

I run:
iwlist eth1 scan

and I get all the wireless connections I want to connect to, while the
previous ones are still showing in nm-applet, that no longer exist.
What is more, I flip the manual wireless switch on the laptop, or turn
off wireless on nm-applet, then return them back on and the non-existent
connections are still showing!

nm-applet must a) be keeping its own records somewhere, other than what
iwlist is getting its information from, and b) is not auto-updating for
up to 1/2 hour at a time. Why?

[Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue

2008-06-06 Thread Arne Goetje
Thomas,

it's not the fonts which cause these issues, it's the fontconfig
configuration on your system, which prefers certain fonts over others in
specific situations. As the ja_JP setting in fontconfig-voodoo is
optimized for Japanese users who do not use extended Latin characters,
this is indeed expected behavior. If you prefer DejaVu or any other font
fir Latin script, I suggest that you copy /etc/fonts/conf.avail/69
-language-selector-ja-jp.conf to ~/.fonts.conf, then edit this file and
add the DejaVu or other font entries at the top of each font list for
serif, sans-serif and monospace. This should fix your problem.

[Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue

2008-06-06 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Hi Arne,

thanks so much for the comment! You are absolutely right, deinstalling the
Chinese fonts is just a workaround.
For the moment at least it works. :-)
Indeed I had a look at the documentation of this XML format that time, but I
thought this takes at least 1-2 hours reading the docs. I understand this XML
gives you all possibility to define you preferences, but I wished there is a
simple dialogue to maintain at least a simple list of preferred fonts.
(maybe a future release :-))

I think I'll probably give it a try when I have a little time, because the
default choice of Japanese fonts is quite bad. (There is anyway only a little
number of good Japanese fonts available.)
Linux is not very popular here in Japan.
Greetings from Tokyo,
Thomas

[Bug 237829] [NEW] Re-add awn-manager to avant-window-navigator Depends

2008-06-06 Thread Andrew Starr-Bochicchio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: avant-window-navigator

As Debian installs Recommends by default and Ubuntu does not, avant-
window-navigator should depend on awn-manager. Without doing so there is
no front-end for configuration and AWN appears broken to the end user.

This change was mistakingly dropped when syncing from Sid in Intrepid.

Debdiff attached:

2008-06-06 Thread Water Liu
No, what Ralph meant is split is the past perfect form. There is no
splitted in spelling... I guess this meant this, instead of
separating support and main packages. BTW, wishlist... a typo...

Rgds,

This is indeed on my radar, however I cannot promise for which release it
will be implemented as it requires some significant code changes in several

[Bug 156541] Re: switching compiz viewports causes citrix ica client to be lost

2008-06-06 Thread Paul Hirst
Interestingly I don't find this a problem any more. Appologies for
forgetting to come back and say this!

This was a problem for me on Gutsy but now I'm on Hardy it's not
anymore. However...

I have switched to a Nvidia graphics card from an onboard intel one and
I now have two monitors in twinview. I guess these changes could have
made a difference. I'm also running the 64bit version of Ubuntu,
although the citrix client I'm running is only available in a 32bit
version.

The citrix client I'm using is version 10.6.115659. I don't know which
version I was running on Gutsy.

I'm running the desktop cube (although only with two sides so it's more
a desktop plane really) and I can switch between the sides and I don't
loose my citrix windows. However I do loose my Lotus Notes running under
Wine! My solution for this is to stick it on the widget layer and set it
to be on all workspaces. I guess I should log the wine+compiz problem.

Same crash here but only at first launch.
f I restart tsclient then it work ok.
Next I disconnect close tsclient
Next time I restart it, it crash again with SIGSEGV in free()
And it work again at second launch..

Due to this behaviour, I can guess It lat have some relation to
processing previous session data or trying to free non-preloaded

[Bug 235044] Re: Invalid cards allowed to be played

2008-06-06 Thread Andrew Starr-Bochicchio
From upstream bug:

I've fixed the bug in the subversion trunk with r187.
Gnome-hearts-0.2.2 is isn't too far away and it will include this fix.

Apparently, when you move the mouse while you click, it's possible to click on
a different card than the (valid) card that is highlighted. The game now checks
the card for validity and will ignore the click if the card is invalid.

Kind regards,

[Bug 234720] Re: wrong UUID in menu.lst after upgrade to hardy

2008-06-06 Thread Marcel Schaap
I had the problem re-occur with todays upgrade to 2.4.16.18. despite the
fact /etc/blkid.tab had the correct entries. This led me to investigate
the matter in more detail. I think I SOLVED it as a non-bug.

Here is what I found

I noticed that the kopt and groot options in my /boot/grub/menu.lst
still had the invalid hd and UUID options. (The fact that a #
appears at the beginning does not mean that these are commented out.
Apparently you need a ## for comments)

relevant diff:

 # kopt=root=UUID=11364fdf-db87-4d3c-a385-0d710cba8a8f ro //correct
---
 # kopt=root=UUID=824f1f6c-3d18-4cac-84b3-12d3a5867e4c ro // incorrect
74c74
 # groot=(hd0,0) //correct
---
 # groot=(hd0,7) // incorrect

Simply deleting menu.lst and running update-grub will generate a new menu.lst
with the correct kopt and groot options.
Please note that you probably will want to edit the new menu.lst.

An pre-existing menu.lst with the INCORRECT kopt and kgroot options will
trigger the reported problems.
and a menu.lst with CORRECT options behaves as expected.

In my case, I should have modified/deleted menu.lst after transferring
the system from one HD to the other.

I therefore think this is NOT A BUG and suggest closing this bug report.
