[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2008-07-04 Thread Zach
I suppose some people might have problems if their VPN solution
completely replaces /etc/resolv.conf. That might require a more
sophisticated solution

This is the case for me. My resolv.conf gets replaced whenever I
connect to my vpn. This is to avoid doing dns resolution on an
untrusted network (e.g., free wifi at coffee shop). Also in cases where
the network I'm on is sandboxed, such as the wireless segment of my lan,
there is limited DNS resolution available. In this case, full dns
resolution must be done at the trusted end of the tunnel.

When the dhcp renewal blows away my trusted resolv.conf, then the
result is either that DNS resolution moves to the untrusted network, or
DNS resolution breaks because resolv.conf now points to the sandbox DNS
address.

[Bug 245493] Re: sharing a folder reports permission issues in Hardy Heron (32 bit)

2008-07-04 Thread marco.pallotta
mcas, I think the behavoir I described about the folder sharing is a real bug
or, however, there is a bug in the steps that bring to make a share as an
unexperienced user couldn't create a share the first time (as Ubuntu didn't
tell to him to restart X or the system as whole) and he should spent much time
to find a reason to solve the problem (maybe if he came from Windows he should
try to reboot anyway :-)
I think that, until to find a better solution, proposing a restart (like the
system already do in the notification bar after installing new kernels) could
be an immediate, functionally, and maybe simple to implement, solution to solve
this bug.

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-07-04 Thread Doug Minderhout

I have been fighting installing a RAID setup with 8.04 + GRUB for about
20 hours. My old setup used a CF card mounted as /boot but I can't get
that to work with some newer hardware and with grub and 8.04. This
worked fine under 6.x and 7.x... So I give up and set up a md RAID 1
partition as ext2 as /boot at the start of my disk, I get grub installed
on both drives no problem and now I hit this. It took a long time to
figure out what was going on as I thought it was hanging because the
scripts take so long to time out... it needs to say something like
waiting for root device to spin up if it hits the part of the script
looking for a removable root device so you can quickly identify what is
going on.

I find it amazing that it has been going for a full year. The issue I
have is that I am using RAID and redundant disks for my boot/root
partition so that I can be hardware agnostic and not have to worry about
getting the system up and going if I think my hardware RAID card is
flaking out. If I can't boot the thing with a failed disk without having
to google up the commands to get the array going it's just about
worthless.

If someone participating in this bug has a good description of how to
get it to work automatically with 8.04 I would really appreciate it if
they could post either the modified initramfs scripts or whatever it
takes to get it working.

Confirming this behaviour on Aspire 6920.

After the preview freezes, you can still choose to take pictures and
video, but these don't show up. They still are not present after
restarting Cheese.

I just checked, and I seem to have a few updates for Gnome components to
2.22.2. I believe 8.04.1 is due sometime today. Will Cheese be among
those updated?

[Bug 245399] [NEW] Desktop installer should have an encrypted LVM option

2008-07-04 Thread JP Vossen
Public bug reported:

Wishlist

The normal desktop installer should have an option like the alternate
CD's Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM. You only have
to read /. or listen to the news to hear about a gazillion lost laptops
with confidential data on them. I'd guess that many/most users will
never bother with the alternate installer, since the normal (and
recommended) desktop CD gives you a two-fer (LiveCD and install) when
downloaded and burned. Thus they will not be aware of this great
option.

And when you go to fix this, see also:

 Unbelievable, really.

I copied it to gutsy-updates yesterday, it is available on
archive.ubuntu.com. I assume you are using a mirror, which usually
lags by an entire day. Just wait a little longer, or use
archive.ubuntu.com directly for -updates (at least temporarily, to get
the pidgin update).

[Bug 234368] Re: Secondary keyboard layouts invalid after Reboot

2008-07-04 Thread Andrew Sayers
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 23762 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/23762

Further use suggests that when Gnome's keyboard preferences applet
changes keyboard layouts, it only changes the keys mentioned directly in
a configuration file, rather than those included by reference. Perhaps
the program should chdir() to the correct location before calling xkb?

I assume that Gnome's keyboard preferences uses XKB behind the scenes.
XKB stores its configuration files in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols, and
allows symbol tables to be include other symbol tables by reference.
The 'gb(dvorak)' layout includes 'us(dvorak)' then just redefines half a
dozen keys. Similarly, 'gb(intl)' includes 'latin' and
'level3(ralt_switch)', and defines eight keys itself. Have a look at
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/gb to see what I'm talking about.

I have my XkbLayout set to gb(dvorak) in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and two
layouts defined in keyboard preferences: UK Dvorak and UK international.
When I change layouts from Dvorak to international, the keys specified
directly in gb(intl) change to their expected meanings, but the other
keys remain those of gb(dvorak). In other words, the settings that
should be included from 'latin' and 'level3(ralt_switch)' are ignored.
It seems very much as if the 'include' commands in the Xkb configuration
file are being ignored.

Re: [Bug 245103] Re: Won't select multiple selects

2008-07-04 Thread JoseLVG
Hi,

Here are the steps:

1) Save this as *select.html*:
html
  head
title/title
meta content=
style/style
  /head
  body

*select multiple=multiple class=rw id=binCreate_bin_languageStrings
size=7 name=bin.languageStrings
option selected=selected value=esEspañol (es)/option
option selected=selected value=enEnglish (en)/option
option value=ptPortuguês (pt)/option
/select
*
/body
/html

2) This is a multiple select input widget, you shuld be able to select all
languages, 2, 1 or none.

*EXPECTED RESULT:* Open *select.html* it with konqueror or Firefox 2 and you
will see the *correct/expected behavior; when you select one, two or three
options and click outside the select widget the options you selected remains
selected*. Note as well that 2 options (Español and English) are selected
when you load the page.

*RESULT:* Open it now with Firefox 3.0 to see the error; *you can select
multiple options as before but they get deselected as the form loses focus
(or you click outside)*. Note as well that the 2 options that should be
preselected when you load the form are NOT preselected.

This happens in a kubuntu 8.04:
$ uname -a
Linux TyS14LNX 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686

$ apt-cache policy firefox

[Bug 245404] [NEW] Wrong language section on Ubuntu

2008-07-04 Thread omurdak
Public bug reported:

I am a Turkish Ubuntu user. This day i have read a message in one of the
forums. It says that when trying to install Ubuntu, at the keyboard
layout selection screen there are kurdish keybord layouts listed under
the name of Turkey. It'a a big mistake. There are any formal Kurdish
support in Turkey. Kurdish language is also spoken in Iraq, Iran and
some other countries at the south east part of Turkey. So, i want that,
the Kurdish language support wouldn't be listed under the country name
of Turkey..

Kurdish language support must be in the main selection of page. Kurdish
is not spoken as mother language in Turkey. As a result of this
situation, there are some of Kurdish terrorist groups in Turkey. And
most of users thinks that Ubuntu support these Terrorist groups on
digital world.

You can google and see that all users in Turkey dont want to use ubuntu
cos of this installation fields..

updated to the new poppler packages, and evince didn't crash a single
time so far.

However, since this is a bit undefined to reproduce, I'll wait for a
second positive feedback until I chalk this off as verified.

applied inline, this is to limit changes included in a SRU and to reduce
overall complexity.

[Bug 245405] [NEW] libtemplates-parser-dev and libxmlada2-dev are not built against latest gnat package

2008-07-04 Thread Lars Hagström
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libtemplates-parser-dev

Both the Ada packages libtemplates-parser-dev and libxmlada2-dev are built
against gnat-4.1.
Since gnat-4.2 is included in Hardy it would be nice to be able to have them
built against that instead.

I have two different bits of code that I'm working on, and one requires
the above libraries, and the other requires gnat-4.2. It quickly gets
annoying having to uninstall/reinstall these things when I'm building
these projects.

looked in /var/log/messages, thats (initial report) what I found. I had
to restart, disable compiz and everything seems to be working fine, when

[Bug 219587] Re: 03-turn_on_buggy-repeat_handling.dpatch causes slowdown in Evolution

2008-07-04 Thread beer
Evolution now scrolls somewhat faster, but the scrollbar now severely lags,
which means it is only updated with approx. 1 fps (so the email view scrolls
but the scrollbar itself stays at the old position for some ms and then pops to
the right place).
Plus I have the opposite behaviour of Gustavo Carneiro, gmail is NOW scrolling
very slow, I believe it used to scroll fast before this update.
firefox seems to scroll a bit faster on other pages, though, but causes X to
consume 50% cpu (this was the same before the update).

I tried to enable
Option AccelMethod XAA
in the Section Device in xorg.conf, but it makes no difference, except for
mplayer not running anymore.

I believe this whole issue might be related to bug

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/232401

I reported earlier.

Re: [Bug 179750] Re: Document Properties error - wrong data

2008-07-04 Thread Julian the flat roof repair/recovering specialist
Hi Chris, thanks for looking into this.

I was thinking about it and the way I usually make a new invoice is to
open an old, existing invoice, and then save as with the new invoice
number, and then change the contents. Then I do a normal save when
it's complete and ready to send. And I suspect the document properties
remain the same as the original invoice I've used, when they should
perhaps (?) reset as though it has never been printed. I've never tried
to do this in Windows to test its behaviour so I'm not sure what the
best solution is. It isn't a big issue, but it is nice to be able to
refer to when a document was printed when auditing paperwork months
later.

Please find an attached document which shows the issue.

Thanks again, yours sincerely, Julian Dixon

[Bug 78900] Re: Crash if composing or answering email in groupwise account

2008-07-04 Thread lueschem
With the latest evolution-data-server 2.22.2-0ubuntu2 I get a similar
behaviour as described above.

To debug it I did the following:

1. evolution --force-shutdown
2. GROUPWISE_DEBUG=1 /usr/lib/evolution/evolution-data-server-2.22
3. Started evolution and tried to compose an e-mail

- The evolution-data-server crashed (cp. evolution.log attachment)

Workaround:

I found out that if I deactivate the option Copy book content locally
for offline operation in the Address Book Properties of the Novell
GroupWise Address Book everything works fine!

could people also stop abusing the titles to specify the version they
are using? those informations can go in the description, so we don't
have to update the title when there is a new ubuntu version open, some
bugs still have gutsy mentionned in the title and it creates confusion
on whether those have been opened during the gutsy cycle or if they are

My about:plugins in Firefox 3 reports the following:

The fixed issues list for the latest beta on the Adobe site does not
seem to suggest that this issue has been addressed, either.

[Bug 186448] Re: Firefox/Thunderbird Preferences Window too short

2008-07-04 Thread Willy Doe
How to select/access invisible parts in Thunderbird (Firefox) when
window is cut off!

If this issue is still relevant to anybody...while I haven`t found a bug
fix, the easiest way to access non visible parts in Thunderbird Account
Settings etc. is using your PC`s TAB key...click on the uppermost
visible part in the settings window, then start pressing the TAB key and
it will either highlight or dotframe selected settings in
succession...if the next visible part is not highlighted or dotframed,
then you know you have hit an invisible setting, press Enter...and there
you go.

[Bug 226641] Re: Mouse not working right

2008-07-04 Thread winlundn
Top-level question: Is this issue p-DoS related? ( See permanent Denial-
of-Service thread(s) )

Questions by order of scale and relevancy:

Mouse fails to move window when trying to click and drag.

(A) Is the mouse communicating with /dev/psaux or /dev/usbdev*?

Mabe in relation to this i also cannot select group of files from
desktop into another folder

(B) If A is true, then are all relevant GNOME, KDE3-4, XFCE4 or XWindows
shared libraries and all other logistics- and operation-required files
aware that that mouse is communicating with the device files previously
mentioned?

Mouse mabe in relation again will select and de-select buttons and or
text at random.

(C) If A and B are true, then are both the XHTML-compliant Web browser
and machine copy/paste histories functioning properly?
