[Bug 5608] Re: SWAT expects to authenticate as root

2008-09-14 Thread Ane-Pieter Wieringa
The workaround is very simple. Just change the rights of the smb.conf file. The
group should be adm and the rights for the group should be set to rw. In
commands:
sudo chgrp adm /etc/samba/smb.conf
sudo chmod g+w /etc/samba/smb.conf
Then it works for me.

And yes, IMHO it is a bug in the swat package.

2008-09-14 Thread Onkar Shinde
@Baptiste Mille-Mathias

We were planning to update this package today. But we had different
plans.

Since you have already created the package we would like to ask a few things if
it is not too much trouble.
1. Can you please base your package on the one available in Debian unstable,
0.27-1? It will be a merge + update.
2. Have you verified the hildon patch works? Didn't you need to refresh it?

I am subscribing Emmet Hikory to this bug who is also interested in
getting this package updated.

[Bug 193139] Re: hardy ooo missing jre - system crashed

2008-09-14 Thread vodhner
Thanks for the tip about removing javasettings_Linux_x86.xml. Upon
restart it rebuilt that file, and the persistent Please install a JRE
dialog box. By the way, when I was getting the dialog box, it *did* go
away for me after I pressed the OK button and the [X] button (a few of
one, a few of the other, etc.) a dozen times or so.

The old javasettings file had
locationfile:///usr/lib/../lib/location and
version1.4.2/version.

The new one, rebuilt by OpenOffice, points to my Sun java 5 installation:
  locationfile:///usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.15/jre/location and
version1.5.0_15/version

I think I've had the problem with the JRE from my first Ubuntu
installation. I am now upgraded to Hardy and at first I was going to
try installing openoffice.org-java-common. Fortunately, Synaptic didn't
show this as available. This caused me to search and I found this
thread, so I did not incur the clutter of the un-needed package. Thanks
for the clean solution!

[Bug 269934] Re: application icons are faded and hard to distinguish

2008-09-14 Thread mnemo
I agree with the bug reported, I've been thinking many times about
filing such a bug report myself. While it's also useful to have less
emphasize on minimized icons I think the current visualization of
minimized icons are just too hard to distinguish because they are too
much faded to gray.

I believe the proper scientific way to sort this out is to have a
professional UX designer look at it and evaluate different ways of
improving the usability of these icons.

[Bug 57091] Re: proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies=1 should be seriously considered to permit SYN flood defense...

2008-09-14 Thread Simon Iremonger
On Fri, 12 Sep 2008, Kees Cook wrote:
Enabling syncookies disables TCP window scaling[1],

I think this is incorrect as-stated But this should be
  confirmed/proved/disproved.

As far as I have found out elsewhere, the syn-cookies support
in Linux is adaptive, and does NOT come into play unless
there is an overflow of SYN_RECVD ...

I.e. tcp window scaling DOES work with syncookies=1 -- just
not when there is a real syn-flood-problem ... but...
if syncookies was not enabled, such a connection would
likely not succeed at all! -- what is better? ;-).
(but --see below -- situation is now different with latest
  kernel!)

 and in most situations,
existing SYN-flood protections in the kernel
already address most sorts of those attacks.

What are these 'existing SYN-flood protections'
  and how do they work?

Inceasing the backlog is simply increasing a finite limit --
randomly dropping SYN_RECVD entries also makes syn-flooding
slightly less effective relateve to forged-syn-traffic -- but
-- it still should not actually take much traffic to overload
the finite limits on SYN_RECVD thereby making new legitimate
  connections unlikely to succeed.

The crptographic cookie approach avoids the need for the syn
packet backlog... and stops the repetition of syn+ack
  packehs in those cases.

In some situations (perhaps like what alecm3 was experiencing)
there are situations it might be needed,
I suspect that... with a busy server with many clients connecting
a lot and connecting from slow links, it may be necessary to
  raise net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog because of legitimate
  rate/number of such not-yet-completed incoming-connections.

Its' worth reading this article:-
http://lwn.net/Articles/277146/

Seemingly 2.6.26 now supports syncookies on ipv6 too, and
now supports connections with window-scaling even
if connection was saved by syncookies.

Rather than having arguments over the value of the setting
etc... -- How do we get this properly investigated
  and sorted out?

This wording is also personally offensive to me. You guys know full well
that Canonical doesn't maintain everything in Main, so why say something
like that? What are you trying to say to users here? Canonical-
supported is bearable, even if stretching a bit. If you read the

Canonical nowhere, so why is it being used?

[Bug 246205] Re: no authentification with CA certificates

2008-09-14 Thread Shirish Agarwal
I asked somebody named MTughan on #boinc on freenode and got his ca-

His ca-bundle.crt got an md5sum of 8648ec353cd43cf250ad89fa2504db9a

while the one which one is mine is c2b20ecae79f4c6d2e12c2a0a216c4c8

His ca-bundle.crt is from a mac machine.

I have moved the ca-bundle.crt to /var/lib/boinc-client/ca-bundle.crt
with the real file while the old one which is a symlink is kept as ca-

[Bug 270002] Re: tapping not working

2008-09-14 Thread William Grant
Commit 9f0da9b3144a2561f6e555e6f08e15643cfda830 (Disentangle two-finger
tap and two-finger scrolling) breaks multi-finger tapping in many
circumstances, it seems. We should talk to upstream about reverting
this.

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided = High
   Status: New = Triaged

** Summary changed:

- tapping not working
+ Multi-finger tapping broken

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Macbook Pro Core Duo, 15.4in, running kernels 2.6.26.2 or 2.6.27-rc6 and
  Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10

  Using xserver-xorg-input-
  synaptics_0.14.7~git20070706-2.1ubuntu4_i386.deb, two and three finger
  tapping work.

Performed a system upgrade on 13 Sep 08, to xserver-xorg-input-
  synaptics_0.15.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb.

Two and three finger tapping ceased working. Tried changing xorg.conf,
adjusting MaxTapTime, FingerHigh and FingerLow, but was unable to get
  multi-finger tap working again.

Reverted to 0.14.7~git20070706-2.1ubuntu4, leaving all other packages
unchanged, and two and three finger tapping returned to work as before.
+
+ This is caused by upstream commit

I guess this will turn more into a forum discussion than a bug
repport... anyway it's not really a bug.

I just think it's unreasonable from Mozilla to ask that. I can
understand Mozilla wanting to protect their brand but that is going to
far and I just don't see what Mozilla gains from doing that. It's not
like Ubuntu is shipping a much modified version of the software anyway.

If it would be me to decide I would just change the name to Ubuntu Web
Browser (no need to create a new fancy name IMHO) and just change the
artwork. That's it. I don't think it would pose much problem to the user
experience.

Adding my voice as well, and asking about workarounds.

I ran into the same problem with installing 8.04.1 server onto a USB

technical, but if someone pointed me to directions I could probably
follow them.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 270036] [NEW] autogen.sh/configure workflow improvement

2008-09-14 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

While trying to build different free software packages, every time I want to
build a completely new code base I go through this tedious process where I run
configure or autogen.sh, it then tells me I need package abc,
so then I install package abc and finally I try running configure/autogen.sh
again. Rinse and repeat about 3-10 times depending on the complexity of the
code base.

I'd suggest that by default will instead check all the package
requirements upfront and then print a list of all the missing packages
directly. This means that the user does not have to re-execute
configure/autogen.sh many times, instead it will be sufficient in most
cases to run it only twice.

I know about apt-get build-dep but A) this does not cover non-packaged
software, and B) just because this is a distro-specific workaround does
not mean that autotools itself should not be improved.

I'm sure there is many people out there who would get more work done if
we made the autotools workflow simpler. Another aspect of it is that it
will become easier to get started as a free software developer, because
getting something to compile is one of the first things a new dev must
master and if that's a long tedious process many people might get turned
off and go do something else instead.

I could not find an upstream bug tracker for autotools, do they even
have one or do they do all their bugs through their e-mail address?

[Bug 270032] Re: I am able to open .mov file, can see the vieo but can hear no sound. Other formats like .mp3 play fine

2008-09-14 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for your bug report. You're actually requesting a new audio codec
to be added to ubuntu, however, it's quite not easy to know which codec
it would take only with the file. Do you know any ways to know the audio
codec of that video file so you can request it to be added to gstreamer
codecs? I looked at your file and the codecs cannot even be detected by
gspot and the audio sound only works under Apple Quicktime (which own
the closed .mov file format).

[Bug 269292] Re: intrepid, visual effects settings are not restored after session restart

2008-09-14 Thread Pajari Räsänen
I have to take back what I wrote in my previous post: Terminal
transparency settings probably do not affect the Visual Settings scheme
(?) and I'm not sure whether any change has been made in the upgrade to
Intrepid in regard of the transparency behaviour; it's the other way
around, as I see it, namely so that true transparency presupposes that
Compiz visual effects are enabled to some degree: Normal mode perhaps?

An easy workaround seems to be the command metacity --replace.

[Bug 267531] Re: Installer Crash

2008-09-14 Thread Colin Watson
Firstly, please report gOS bugs to whoever makes that, not to us. (I
know they probably forgot to change the text that tells you to report
installer bugs here, but I can't really help that ...)

Here's the immediate cause of this:

Sep 7 18:42:42 gOS-Live user-setup: gconftool-2: error while loading
shared libraries: /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0: invalid ELF header

That file can't really be broken on the CD, otherwise the installer
itself would never have managed to start up. That means it must have
been broken in the process of copying it from the CD to your hard disk.
(Newer versions of Ubiquity make more of an effort to detect this
situation.) Further investigation reveals these log messages about your
hard disk:

Sep 7 14:29:15 gOS-Live kernel: [ 58.192930] hdb:hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51
{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Sep  7 14:29:15 gOS-Live kernel: [   58.198543] hdb: dma_intr: error=0x84 {

Sep  7 14:29:15 gOS-Live kernel: [   58.200027] hdb: dma_intr: error=0x84 {
DriveStatusError BadCRC }
Sep 7 14:29:15 gOS-Live kernel: [ 58.200029] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Sep  7 14:29:15 gOS-Live kernel: [   58.200269] hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 {

Sep  7 14:29:15 gOS-Live kernel: [   58.200272] hdb: dma_intr: error=0x84 {

Sep 7 14:29:15 gOS-Live kernel: [ 58.244919] ide0: reset: master: error
(0x7f?)

So either the kernel's driver for your hard disk is broken, or your hard
disk is faulty. It may help to check whether the hard disk is old and in
need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

[Bug 270038] [NEW] autogen.sh/configure prints the wrong name for dependency packages

2008-09-14 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

I was just trying to build nemiver from svn. I ran autogen.sh and then
it said package libgtop-2.0 is missing. My first gut reaction was to
try sudo apt-get install libgtop-2.0-dev but that did not work.
Instead I had to use apt-cache to find out that the name is actually
libgtop2-dev.

Why is autogen.sh/configure printing the wrong package name? I know it
must have been discussed many times before, but really is this the best
user experience that free software can do? Maybe there is some reason
why it's hard, but surely we can steam ahead and improve it, no?

Getting the autotools user experiene to be great is pretty important
because so many projects use autotools and so for many/most new aspiring
free software developers this is their first real encounter. If using
autotools was easier and more intuitive more people would argubly get
through that initial first-in-a-lifetime compile and maybe they would
even write their first patch. After you've done that your spirit is much
higher and it feels more meaningful. But if you get stuck for a long
time not being able to compile stuff, that's sort of a turn off.

I believe walking through the actual first time developer experience and
ironing out kinks like this could lead to more developers for ubuntu in
particular and for free software in general.

[Bug 264911] Re: [PPA 0.9.11 regression] Frequently stutters/pops with hda_intel

2008-09-14 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Tried the latest packages (0.9.12 ~ppa5). The same behaviour occurs.

This is using alsa-driver 1.0.18rc3 and libasound2 1.0.17a-0ubuntu2~ppa1

Some further observations:
* It seems like this might be codec specific - don't ask me how. I have a
bunch of songs in wavpack format which exhibit underruns frequently, whereas I
don't seem to get the same frequency of underruns with mp3s.

* The I: alsa-sink: buffer-underrun messages only appear when there's
a pavucontrol client connected, although the audio glitches occur
regardless, so it seems that pavucontrol is making pulseaudio report
more underruns, not actually generating more underruns.

New logfile attached.

[Bug 270046] [NEW] apparmor prevent cups-pdf to create ~/PDF folder

2008-09-14 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

Right after installing cups-pdf on intrepid, it's not possible to print
a document in PDF unless if you create ~/PDF folder, or if you launch
sudo aa-complain cupsd .

On the first print, cups-pdf have to create ~/PDF folder if it doesn't
exist, however apparmor does not permit this, so cups-pdf is unusable
until PDF folder is created.

Steps to reproduce :

1. On a fresh Ubuntu intrepid installation, install cups-pdf.
2. Try to print a document with PDF printer.
3. Create ~/PDF
4. Try to print the same document again with PDF printer.

Result : The document won't print to PDF the first time, and it will
correctly print after the PDF folder has been created.

[Bug 212280] Re: cups-pdf printer not generating PDF file.

2008-09-14 Thread Hans Deragon
Saïvann Carignan, you found the problem. Running `sudo aa-complain
cupsd ` made it work. I got the following in /var/log/messages:

[Bug 270047] [NEW] konsole does not accept password

suddenly the terminal does not accept sudo / su anymore. I tried to
change my password but that is impossible too.

[Bug 256210] Re: kipi-plugins cannot be installed on intrepid with KDE4

2008-09-14 Thread mithras
I've installed gwenview, libkipi5, libexiv2-6 and digikam-kde4.
Installing kipi-plugins tries to uninstall gwenview, digikam-kde4 and libkipi5.
It tries to install libkipi0 en libexiv2-3.

The problem is more specific: kipi-plugins needs libkipi0. Libkipi0
conflicts with libkipi5 and libkipi5 is needed by digikam-kde4 and
gwenview. Creating a kipi-plugins-kde4 with dependencies of libkipi5
will resolve the problem I think.

[Bug 201555] Re: checkgmail dependencies not met/checked

2008-09-14 Thread Willem Ligtenberg
The dependencies should get installed now, however one of the dependencies
(recommendation really) (libsexy) is still not in the repository. However that
is already filed as another bug.
Also the current version works out of the box, also without that
recommendation. Therefor I mark this bug as Fix released.

2008-09-14 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

http://feedthehead.net used to work just fine a few weeks ago.
Now I have to jump through hoops to get it working:

1. sudo dpkg --purge flashplugin-nonfree
2. Start firefox, goto feedthehead.net and quit when it wants to search the
plugin
3. sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
4. Start firefox and visit the site, it will work.

If i click reload, Firefox will crash, leaving the following in
