[Bug 271777] Re: Exit status 127 when starting openvpn when its already started.

2008-09-25 Thread wayne
Yes, that is an easy fix which I have done on all my servers. I don't
agree with marking this priority as low as it breaks heartbeat which is
incredibly important to many non-redhat server implementations.

This release is supposed to be supported till April 2013 (Server)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases. An important package like openvpn
should be supported properly until end of life or lts is worth nothing.
Please push this change into Hardy.

[Bug 274350] [NEW] cups-pdf cannot create ~/PDF and files in it

2008-09-25 Thread Misha Bazanov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: likewise-open

I'm run Ubuntu 8.04 and add it to windows domain using likewise-open.
Home of domain users in this case placed in /home/Domain_Name/user_name

in /var/log/cups/cups-pdf_log:
[ERROR] failed to create directory (/home/Domain_Name/user_name/PDF)
[ERROR] failed to create user output directory

to add /home/Domain_Name/user_name to @{HOMEDIRS} in

like this:
 @{HOMEDIRS}=/home/ /home/Domain_Name/

Wil be perfect, if likewise-open will edit this variable when add

2008-09-25 Thread Thierry Carrez
You are interested in having this bug fixed in a SRU (stable release
update) for hardy. I am closing it as Fix released because the bug has
been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - the Intrepid
Ibex.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please
follow the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's
attention.

[1]: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

In particular you should use Nominate for release to target it for a
hardy update.

I set it to Low because I couldn't think of something that would break
due to that wrong return code. Could you please explain your heartbeat
scenario so that the bug priority is set up properly ?

[Bug 123427] Re: [apport] package mysql-server-5.0 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-09-25 Thread Torsten Bronger
Today, I found out that the very same root cause also prevents database
dump for backups from working:

 mysqldump --opt mysql mysql.sql
mysqldump: Couldn't execute '/*!40103 SET TIME_ZONE='+00:00' */': Table
'mysql.time_zone_name' doesn't exist (1146)

After re-installing mysql-server, it works again. Thus, not only the
internal user table but also the timezone table is gone. Maybe all
other internal tables, too.

Again: This makes backups via a database dump impossible. Is this
really Importance: Medium?

By the way, the only maintainer question for making this incomplete bug
complete for almost one year was, Do you have any files in /var/lib/mysql/?
Of course I have: There is my database after all! Look, I'm really willing to
help with this but please do it seriously.

Or, declare that until further notice MySQL Server doesn't work on
Ubuntu and that you recommend PostgreSQL.

2008-09-25 Thread Loye Young
There must be some middle ground. Perhaps something like:

quote

IT WORKS!

This is the default web page for this server.

The fact that you see this page means that the host computer is booted up,
the web server software is running, and the networking between your computer
and the host computer is functioning properly.

If this page is not what you expected, there are many possible causes. Check
with the owner or administrator of the server for more information.

Pedro Villavicencio [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
 for you? Thanks in advance.

Hello i checked it against i386 now, sound-juicer reports the missing
album. When pressing the report button, a firefox open up the
musicbrainz login page. This did not happen on amd64, where the
described error occurs. The 2.22.0 on i386 seems to be clean.

Musicbrainz album insertion then is a mess, they dont really want new
albums but this is not an ubuntu bug.

Bye Eric

Thanks for your report. This is reproducible in Intrepid. I suspect that

[Bug 227252] Re: The generated binaries always crash

2008-09-25 Thread BernardB
Some mmap restrictions recently went into the kernel to help mitigate
null-pointer deref bugs and other classes of exploits.

Running sudo sh -c 'echo 4096 /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr' should allow
cryopid to get past this stumbling block.

Alternately, the resumer code should be put at a higher address. Ubuntu
ships with a default mmap_min_addr of 64K (0x1). It shouldn't hurt
to put the resumer there instead.

I'm not sure it's worth dropping
debian/patches/debian/patches/03_change_anthy_dic_path.dpatch - doesn't
look like it's applied at all.

Do you think you could change the changelog entry to be a bit more
concise? Something like this would be great:

anthy (9100e-3.2ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-09-25 Thread Fran McLoughlin
I have been working with computers for upwards of 40 years and regard
them and their operating systems as a hobby and a career.

In reading through most of the Bug#1 posts I seem to have missed what to
me is the most important point of the issue.

It is one of perception.

Someone (not me) said that Perception is reality - not sue who, but
they were correct.

Outside of the Linux community I believe there is a huge perception gap
between what Linux is and what it does.

I believe the only way to correct this is to deal with the perception.

Most people vote with their wallet. If Linux is to replace Windows in
the marketplace then the buyer must be given a clear message as to why
(or why not...) to go with Linux.

It is correct to offer the buyer a choice but I feel that the buyer
would not have enough information to make an informed decision.

Linux needs a place in buyer mindspace and it is just not there. Think
back to the days of Visicalc. The buyer would totally want to the get
the software for his or her business. The next question is what does it
need to run it on. Answer: Apple Plus (or whatever...). The
application software drove the hardware...

Note I said _application_ software. Now its the OS that drives the
hardware. Do you not see that whining about Vista not running well on
existing hard is short sighted. It was not MEANT to run on existing
hardware. It was meant to drive the hardware replacement / upgrade
channel.

I have vacillated between Vista, XP and Linux for the past few months as
I feel it is time to take a decision. There are applications that run
only on Windows machines that I am not prepared to abandon in favour of
a Linux alternative. Linux to me is compelling but still falls short on
getting me to convert over 100%. Right now my question is whether to
run Linux in a vmware workspace on the Windows machine, or XP on a linux
host. I'm not there yet on this.

Judging the dedication and effort that is being put into Linux by the
community - I feel that it should be compensated in a meaningful and
appropriate way. GPL may be all fine and dandy but coders have to eat -
do they not?

I believe buyers should be given an opportunity to vote with their
wallet and reward achievement accordingly. I am not talking about the
huge budget MS uses to cram unfininshed software into the retail channel
- but the buying public has become more informed about consumer choices
and able to recognise value and suitability of purpose in their
purchases.

The games arena is one of the sorest deficiencies in the Linux camp and
unfortunately this arena is one that determines a majority of buyer
choice - will it run my games... Most of us have got our start in
computers running computer games, then maybe programming, etc, etc.

Game programming should be developed on an agnostic level - removed from
the hardware level and dependencies. Let the operating system provide
the linkage for the human interface. If this could happen then buyers
would vote for the OS that most meets their needs and the games
compatibility question would disappear.

I HAVE seen advertised systems with Linux as the OS here in Canada -
advertised by Tiger Direct - so it is not rare.

Right now I'm battling Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 and issues with Compiz -
with varying success. My strategy now is to wait out the known issues
until they are resolved... While XP remains in my back pocket for my
have to get one with it stuff.

2008-09-25 Thread Iulian Udrea
Upstream CHANGELOG of the new release:

* Updated to use UTF8 for text in swf output, meaning diacritics (international
characters) now work
* The DejaVu fonts are now used instead of Bitstream
* Automake (1.10) is used for the build system
* Many bug fixes, including some initial memory leak fixes and swf improvements

Please note that the current version from Intrepid is pretty useless as
it cannot export .swf

[Bug 250067] Re: Power Manager Brightness Applet is not dimming the backlight

2008-09-25 Thread Zachs Kappler
I have the same problem, but I don't think you expanded on it much.
Because of the power manager for gnome isn't loading on startup, it
causes a awkward delay in logging off or shutting down. However, if you
goto change the settings for the power manager, it loads up and does
it's job. I have had the battery on my laptop die without warning
because the power manager ALSO controls that too.

[Bug 274278] [NEW] DRM Breaks Resume from Suspend

2008-09-25 Thread Jason Smith
Public bug reported:

Kernel version 2.6.27-4, having the drm module loaded results in suspend
(90% of the time) not returning from suspend. Going into Xorg.conf and
disabling acceleration is not enough on its own to prevent the hang, you
have to ensure the drm module itself is not loaded, even if it is not in
use. This bug can be confirmed for all versions of the Intrepid kernels
(my hardware only runs on intrepid) with the exception of the linux-rt
kernel, which suspends prefectly with DRM. The crash happens after X is
brought back up and tasks are being resumed. The mouse cursor is
displayed but cannot be moved, the machine is entirely non-responsive to
everything. This is not just hung video, the kernel is completely down.

No kernel oops is displayed. Log files only show a successful suspend
and then the eventual boot after the cold restart. Occasionally
(depending on how quickly tasks resume I guess) some of the post resume
scripts get to run. I added touch commands to each of them so I could
trace them and it gets through a semi-random number of them each time.
Occasionally it will even get through all of them before the hard lock.
The hard lock does not itself seem to be in pm-utils and its scripts,
but rather inside drm in some sort.

System Specs:
Thinkpad T500
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz
3GB RAM
Intel X4500HD integrated video using i915.ko

running latest intrepid as of Sep 25.

gui pops up showing the error message (EE) module ABI major version (0)
doesn't match the server's version (1) (EE) Failed to load module dri
(module requirement mismatch, 0) and offers to reconfigure xorg but is
not able to do so.

Manually changing the Driver in xorg.conf from fglrx to radeon
(which xorg.99.log confirms loads ok) does not appear to stick - it is
is changing back to fglrx on reboot.

Error message from:

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(II) Module dri: vendor=X.Org Foundation
compiled for 7.1.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
(II) UnloadModule: dri
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(EE) Failed to load module dri (module requirement mismatch, 0)

The error message in xorg.99.log (not shown in the graphical error pop
up):

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol:
miZeroLineScreenIndex
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so
(II) UnloadModule: fglrx
(EE) Failed to load module fglrx (loader failed, 7)

The full xorg.0.log and xorg.99.log are attached.

[Bug 270943] Re: drive adapter seen on Live CD partitioner not seen at boot-time - cannot boot after installing

2008-09-25 Thread bllred
While I cannot figure this out, the more I study, I see:

grub sees partition / at BusyBox it has disappeared.

when trying to load newer kernel the wrong partition is
mounted for root, in this case it is NTFS. Due to /dev/sdb
bcoming /dev/sdd, instead.

I suspect it was booting ok before a kernel upgrade.
This is why I am stuck at last-good-boot.

I was mistaken, all drives seem to be there, but the partition
has been removed. All other partitions are present.

If you know what the problem is I'd appreciate knowing.
Perhaps it is due to some error of mine.

It also seems to me that SATAII 3G drives are running on USB
emulation. Far too many USB storage devices - I have one
at times, not several.

[Bug 84505] Re: sound volume control broken on dell inspiron 9300 laptop

2008-09-25 Thread localhost
Not sure if someone is gonna try this, but I could give this a try over
the weekend. Just received my new Dell and the old one will be
reinstalled anyway.
