Tested the proposed samba package on hardy x86 and everything is working
fine : no side effect caused by the patch and machine authentication is
now working fine even if there is no sambaPwdLastSet attribute in LDAP.

Thanks,

The ones of you having this issue: Are you by chance using the SFU
idmap? I've isolated my problem down to that I believe.

If not, see if you can grab the stack trace. The samba panic action
should put it in the log files.

[Bug 294277] Re: Tomcat 6 missing directory Catalina in /etc/tomcat6 - so impossible to deploy webapp

2008-11-07 Thread Thierry Carrez
The Catalina directory gets installed when you install one of the
applications packages (tomcat6-examples, tomcat6-docs,
tomcat6-admin...). But you're right, it should be created by the tomcat6
package itself.

The question of making that directory writable by the tomcat6 user is a
question of security/policy/feature tradeoff... So far we made the
choice of not allowing Tomcat 6 to modify files below /etc by itself
(and by doing so, we break some of the admin webapps features). However
I didn't thought we were breaking autodeployment.

Just to be clear, by autodeploying you mean put WAR files into the
appBase directory ? I thought tomcat would unpack those, but not copy
the context.xml file to conf/Catalina/localhost.

With the new package I have the right behaviour (mouse moves out of vm

jumps to another location in the vm. So I think the registration of

[Bug 295032] [NEW] KDM DOES NOT START ANYMORE after update of 4 files just now on Kubuntu 8.10 with nvidia

2008-11-07 Thread anton
Public bug reported:

As the title says, I just updated my Kubuntu 8.10 with synaptic,
15 minutes ago 4 files were updated.

They concerned nvidia and sorrs I forgot (something telling we do not need a
workaround
for the actual kernel anymore).

OK the result in short:

Kubuntu starts but ends up with a BLACK SCREEN, no more
kdm login.

What the hell does this mean, I always thought updates were to fix bugs?

Pleas tell me what I can give you on information?

[Bug 294811] Re: [Intrepid] Hotmail reply functionality no longer working after hotmail's last upgrade

2008-11-07 Thread Lars Bratthall
Workaround:

Type about:config in the address field in Firefox

Edit the string General...Vendor (I know I am forgetting something in
the middle here) from: Ubuntu to Firefox.

This seems to cause Firefox to report its full set of version-describing
strings differently to sites it is connected to.

Close Firefox completely.
Restart firefox
Log in to Hotmail again. You will notice that Hotmail is no longer complaining
about unsupported browser version. (Note: This is a Hotmail bug. Please do
report your experience with this to Hotmail.)
The text field is now working again.

However, this woraround has some unpleasant side effects: In statistics
based on web metrics, there will be an increase of Firefox as vendor,
and a decrease of Ubuntu as vendor.

[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-07 Thread Daniel James
I hate to think I 'know best' - but the upstream author is wrong. When
I'm browsing photos on my phone that I've taken and I want to send a
particular picture to the computer, the easiest way to do this is click
the little envelope and 'send to' 'silver-0'. Searching through a nasty
folder structure to find the name of a file similar to the file I'm
viewing is definitely more complicated in this case.

I really really *really* don't want to explain to my parents how to do
something like this either. Especially when I was able to demonstrate to
friends how easy it was to use linux with my phone a year ago.

Sorry to be a pain :-/

[Bug 237375] Re: Doing alsa applications to share sound with pulseaudio

Hi,

actually there is something that could be done: you could create a
script that modifies /etc/asound.conf so that output goes to pulseaudio,
and put this script in upstart so that it is executed when the system is
booted. Then, you make it a dependency of the pulseaudio package, and
libasound2 a dependency of this script.

[Bug 125881] Re: [gutsy] Most extra buttons don't work on Vaio VGN-TX850P

2008-11-07 Thread Troy James Sobotka
First noticed this regression with 8.04 and I'll note that it is still
present in 8.10.

I originally managed to have the A/V button work (with some keyboard
layout that reported a keypress) and swapped it out, but now it too
fails to generate a key press event as per xev.

I'd say this is still an issue and hasn't been resolved since the first

 Status in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
 Hi,
upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy I've seen a considerable HD transfer rate
 slowdown.

I have a machine with two IDE disks, both are udma5 capable. In Gutsy, they
were recognised as 'hd[ab]' and I with hdparm sequential thoughput was:

 /dev/hdb:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 172 MB in 3.01 seconds = 57.19 MB/sec

which is quite correct for that kind of drive.

In Hardy, they are recognized as 'sd[ab]', and the performance regarding
transfer rate is LESS THAN HALF:

 /dev/sdb:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 78 MB in 3.01 seconds = 25.92 MB/sec

That slowdown is visible also during file transfer operations, obviously. One
thing I've noticed is that in the dmesg, my drive is set at UDMA/33, and also
hdparm reports that udma2 is currently configured:

 sudo hdparm -i /dev/sdb

 /dev/sdb:

I've seen a number of users complaining about that, a number of bugs with
status Incomplete or Release Fixed. I can say that with the latest Hardy
patches (as of now), the problem is still there. Will that be fixed before
the final release? If not, that can be a huge performance penalty!

Here are some infos. I'm willing to help to solve the problem, just ask if
 you need any info.

[Bug 295035] [NEW] Unable to mount any volume.

2008-11-07 Thread everytimeref
Public bug reported:

Unable to mount any volume.

After latest upgrades in intrepid I know get the following error whenever I
insert my USB stick.

The error is nearly identical when I insert my Panasonic digital Camera
( I did get it working by upgrading libgphoto2, but after an official
Ubuntu upgrade it died again) and also when I try and mount my second HD
(which has Windows on it) all these devices worked fine in Hardy

---
Cannot mount volume.

Unable to mount the volume 'MY STICK'.

IsCallerPrivileged() failed

Unable to mount MY STICK
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.
---

'would be grateful for any help.

BTW I've checked permissions in Users and groups and the access storage
devices automatically box is ticked

I've just upgraded to 8.10 from 8.04.1

It's a PNY 2gb USB stick, but I'm not sure if that's relavant as any
thing I try to mount, including my Phone (sony k800i) my internal
windows HD and my Panasonic Lumix TZ3 ALL come back with the same error.

It's all kit that worked fine in 8.04

Update: Now I have no access to any drive other than my main HD,

I put a CD or DVD in a drive and it does not appear, no error message, I
put in a USB key or camera and get the same thing.

What is happening???

[Bug 295034] [NEW] when changing VT7 - VT8 - epically hangs / crashes ALWAYS on nvidia

2008-11-07 Thread LimCore
Public bug reported:

This bug exists in Ubuntu 8.04, but I think it was also on 7.x.
On amd64 SMP (dualcore), with various nvidia cards (now GT8600, previously
afair FX 5xxx).
Using nvidia binary drivers.

1. star desktop as usuall (VT7)
2. go to VT8
3. play in example an 3d opengl game in VT8
4. go back to VT7
5. repeat from step 2

After around 3-8 repeats my box ALWAYS have ill effects:
1. very often - one of x sessions crashes when changing screen
2. sometimes - one of session crashes a bit later (in up to 1 minute), or one
of programs crashes with some X related problem afair (rare)
3. often - box hangs, displaying a black screen, sometimes also the monitor
(LCD) turnsoff/suspends, USB keyboard is not working; All programs seem to be
running usually (music plays etc etc).
USB keyboard does not work (even numlock) - but - sysrq-b works
4. previously (around 7.x ubuntu, and on older gfx) the most common effect was
that opengl textures where messed up after switching VT's

In addition,
*** ALWAYS ***
when you change VT's (i.e. 7 - 8) while an opengl game is starting (i.e.
setting up fullscreen), then it ALWAYS crashes.

[Bug 294811] Re: [Intrepid] Hotmail reply functionality no longer working after hotmail's last upgrade

2008-11-07 Thread Jean-Paul
The workaround works for me, so it is probably a Hotmail bug, indeed.
This also explains why it works on windows; There, the string must be set to
Firefox, and not to Ubuntu.

However, asking the Hotmail people to add the Ubuntu String to their
list of recognized browsers is like asking Satan to repent, I'm afraid
:)

[Bug 259219] Re: Broken TLS support in libGL.so

2008-11-07 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi jonathan-sieber,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from
cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

I confirm this problem, it seem to happen at random times. As Oernie said, it
can be fixed by restarting Firefox but also by opening a new Firefox window.
Note that this is not a Ubuntu bug because I have the exact same problem on
Windows XP at work !
