They also have a fantastic developer/user community that is supportive and communicative. 2008-11-15 - (Guy Van Sanden) @Stuart Cianos Actually most of it seems to be in the AGPL version except for the client license required for Outlook usage. Which is logical, if you are paying for closed source outlook you should also pay for the connector... I know about citadel, have been running it for 2 years but it does have some issues and lacks certain features like LDAP integration. 2008-11-16 (Stuart Cianos) @Guy Van Sanden: Citadel will allow you to authenticate against any service which support the underlying authentication of the operating system (in this case, PAM). I have used this to authenticate users against PAM using modules such as pam_ldap; additionally, it can automatically populate an LDAP directory with information from its global address book for use with external clients. 2008-11-29 (Giorgio Zarrelli) I do not see eGroupware, what about it? 2008-12-01 (Guy Van Sanden) @Stuart: I tried PAM based authentication on Ubuntu, but it only works with pam_unix and not pam_krb5 or pam_ldap for me. Though I really like Citadel in many ways, it has too many limitations to use it as a full-blown groupware server like Zimbra or Zarafa. [Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10
So to summarize your summary, if you don't have any control over the server - which was running fine with the 8.04 client - you're stuffed! I don't understand how a bug in the server is causing something that works under 8.04 to stop working under 8.10, and I really can't understand why fixing this doesn't seem to be an urgent issue. It wasn't the introduction of anything new on the server side that caused this problem to arise, it was an update to the client - or am I still missing something? Regards, mipper Just to summarize again: 1) A few versions of Samba server had a bug parsing DFS paths (fixed in Samba server 3.0.26). You can see which version of server you have mounted to by doing cat /proc/fs/cifs/Debug Data on the client). When the Linux CIFS client added support for DFS last year, those few (relatively old) versions of Samba servers (when configured for DFS) exhibited problems with certain path based calls (setting the file size was one) which can break some common applications. 2) Although disabling the cifs unix extensions (mount option nounix) may help in some cases, the best solution is to upgrade the Samba server to any of the more recent versions of the server. If that is not possible, disabling DFS support (see comment 50) in the server is another possibility (on future kernels, 2.6.28 includes this e.g., you will be able to specify nodfs as a mount option on the client to workaround the problems on these two versions of Samba). -- Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/286828 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10
mipper: This is a bug about servers claiming they support something that they don't. If client stuff makes use of that something and trust servers to properly implement what they claim they do, it doesn't work. It happens that the client stuff in Intrepid takes advantage of those advanced features, while the client stuff in hardy didn't. The fix: Fix your server by upgrading to a non-affected version. However, we understand that the server might not be easily upgradable. For example it might be a closed NAS box with a sucky warranty. For those few stuck with buggy servers, we provide the following workarounds: - If you have access to the samba configuration on the server, you can add msdfs root = no in smb.conf - If you have no access whatsoever to the server, a new kernel providing a nodfs client-side mount option is being published. You will be able to use that option to turn off the advanced features in the client stuff for Intrepid.
[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10
To follow up on mipper's point, here's what I don't understand: 1) My server is Ubuntu 8.04, currently patched. 2) I upgraded my workstation from 8.04 to 8.10 and lose the ability to have my CIFS shares on the server mounted automatically at boot time as they were right up until I upgraded. 3) So, if it's the server's fault, why hasn't Ubuntu pushed out the appropriate patches to 8.04? The common thread in all of this is Ubuntu, and therefore IMHO Ubuntu should FIX IT.

Thanks for the clarification, Thierry. I am, alas, in the last position, so am very interested in knowing when the new kernel will be published. I can't find any target dates on this bug report and it's the lack of any visibility on when the fix might be released that's so frustrating. How does one find out when the release will be. [Bug 304307] [NEW] update-cracklib does not include newly installed wordlists
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cracklib-runtime I installed libpam-cracklib then a bunch of wordlists. Running the cracklib-runtime daily cron script does not update the dictionary in /var/cache/cracklib. Turns out that the cron job calls /usr/sbin /update-cracklib, which compares the mod times of wordlist files to the dictionary in /var/cache/cracklib and does not include the wordlist unless it is newer than the dictionary. Makes sense except that the timestamps on the newly installed dictionaries do not reflect when they were installed but rather when they were packaged. Workaround is to delete the files in /var/cache/cracklib and rebuild from scratch using the cron job. [Bug 263160] Re: hardy / ibex - raid5 - ata#: hard resetting link
Pretty fed up with people saying this could be so many different issues. So much so that i finally decided to risk my data to prove it read the following. ***___This has got to be the card / chipset / sata_mv driver._*** Short and simple version of my issues: - This does not depend on drive types - Appears to be caused by MV88SX6081 chipset - Could be a problem in SATA_MV driver - I need replacement controller suggestions Details to all non believers (it’s not a power / hardware issue): I moved 5 of the 7 drives to my onboard controller (have 6 sata ports on the mobo, last was used by the system drive). Left 2 of the western digital drives on the MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II: - sdg - sdh After the advice of some through email, I unplugged everything that wasn't needed. They assumed that it could have been power giving the number of drives I had in the machine. What was left on a tx750w corsair power supply: - mobo (c2d, 4gb ram) - 7 sata raid drives - spread across multiple power supply rails - 1 sata system drive - Super Micro SAT2-MV8 (MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II) - intel pcie 10/100/1000 network card Then I replaced the sate cables 1 more time with old cables I knew worked. I also threw in the brand new controller card as well (have a few spares lying around). I brought everything up and upgraded to: Then I started to rebuild the raid. Everything went fine, no freezes. **This was the first indication that this only happens under heavy load on multiple ports as has been brought up before. So then I started copying data over. About 180GB's the card hard reset both of the drives attached to it and knocked them both out of the raid. **This was also significantly different from before when I was utilizing all the ports as it seemed to work great for quite some time, it wasn't until I was well into the process that the card finally gave up. See the attached dmesg and /var/log/messages. This is the 2nd time I’ve had this card degrade my raid and almost give me a heart attack. The cards are going in the trash at this point. I'm open to suggestions as to possibly replacement. I don’t need a hardware raid card, just a decent controller with great *nix support and lots of ports. ::sigh:: I don’t know who to contact but this is the end of the line for me with this controller and hopefully my issues. Attempting to get my data back as we speak with 2 failed drives in a raid 5... wonderful times. dmsg of the event: [ 1061.040118] md: recovery of RAID array md1 [ 1061.040120] md: minimum _guaranteed_ speed: 1000 KB/sec/disk. [Bug 303901] [NEW] system monitor applet does not update stats on mouseover, nor gives useful average
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor Currently, mousing over the applet is worthless. [Bug 303905] [NEW] radio streams continue to play when x server is reset
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gecko-mediaplayer Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 with all updates as of 1st December 2008. The problem is that even when the Firefox session is restored after logging in, it attempts to open new streaming windows as opposed to the ones that were open in the previous session and it remains impossible to stop the already running streams without killing the 'mplayer' processes that are running in the System Monitor. I would expect that the streams would stop with resetting the server, or at least for the stream controls provided by gecko-mediaplayer/mplayer to be restored. To reproduce, install gecko-mediaplayer and open up any radio stream (maybe of any file format, but in this case Windows Media) and then reset the X server system via the ctrl + alt + backspace shortcut. ** Affects: gecko-mediaplayer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: gecko-mediaplayer mplayer radio stream streaming streams ubuntu x-server ** Summary changed: - radio streams continue to play when x window is reset + radio streams continue to play when x server is reset ** Description changed: Binary package hint: gecko-mediaplayer Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 with all updates as of 1st December 2008. [Bug 303908] [NEW] Sound completely non-functional
Public bug reported: upon doing a distribution update to the Jaunty alpha a few days ago, my system's sound is completely non-functional. sound works fine in my dual-booted windows XP install, and it worked great in intrepid Ibex. The change happened immediately after rebooting after the update to the jaunty alpha. I have no idea what might be causing the problem out of the hundreds of package updates between the release of the alpha and today. please let me know how I can help track down this problem. The model of laptop that i use is used by over 500 students at my school, and slightly upgraded hardware by another 500 students. Thank you for the hint to bug 289754 . Unfortunately, however, the issue isn't solved with 2.6.27-10-generic for me. Also, it seems that bug 289754 is about an issue with the driver for the nvidia chipset SATA controller, where in my case it is the intel ICH8 chipset driver (ata_piix)... Also, if you look at the dmesg output attached to bug 289754 , you can see that in that case SATA error messages occured *after* the SATA link has already been reported up.
