[Blueprint groupware-server] Groupware Server

2008-12-01 Thread Guy Van Sanden
Blueprint changed by Guy Van Sanden:

Whiteboard changed to:

2006-12+21 khaeru: might this be handled by the ubuntu-server-tasks spec?
é
21/12/2006 - I think we should pick an existing suite, i.e. hula and then
create the ubiquitous middleware to achieve what we want

13/07/2007 (stephan-impilinux) - We have recently evaluated a load of
these solutions and have some professional experience in it.

2008-06-07 (pixelpapst) - Just a quick reminder that the hula project
ist effectively dead since late 2006, and the community created a fork
called bongo project. However, by now they ripped out all of Hula's
LDAP connectivity, which makes this a very pretty but useless solution
for SmallBusinessServer.

2008-06-08 (Guy Van Sanden) Citadel seems a very good choice. IT offers many
features (including a Jabber server) and is completely GPL'ed.
The only caveat is that it does not have LDAP support (yet)

2008-06-19 (Art Cancro) -- yes, definitely go with Citadel. Ubuntu
packages are already being maintained, and the project would be
delighted to cooperate with the Ubuntu team on integration issues.

2008-06-19 (Todd Hanna) I would also like to give a big +1 to Citadel.
They already have the .debs and there is even a connector to use it as
an Exchange replacement if you have clients using Outlook. I have run
it without issue on Ubuntu server since version 6.06. It's head and
shoulders above the rest at the moment.. and it is easy to setup,
update, and maintain.

2008-07-08 (Stuart Cianos) - I'll also give major points to Citadel, and
have been a longtime user of it. It is the only open-source groupware
package that is self maintaining and straightforward to configure.

2008-07-09 (Stephan Buys) - Please also dont forget Kolab (Citadel
implements the Kolab v1 format). Kolab has 3 plugins for Outlook,
support Horde Webmail, Thunderbird/Lightning and Kontact.

2008-07-09 (Guy Van Sanden) RE Kolab - Kolab is not a full groupware
AFAIK, it does not have a web interface. Correct me if I'm wrong.

2008-07-09 (Christian Merlin) Remember also SOGo
(http://sogo.opengroupware.org/) it use LDAP for users and PostgreSQL
for database. So It could be easy to integrate with Ebox (http://ebox-
platform.com/). So Ubuntu can became an'easy and powerfull groupware
server like the commercial one.

2008-07-10 (Stephan Buys) Kolab does have a web interface (for admin and
email) through Horde (www.horde.org). Calendars, Contacts and Tasks can
be shared between Outlook/Kontact/Horde/Thunderbird

2008-07-10 - Personally I prefer bongo, however it is still in its
infancy. It has a great UI, and is targeted at being simple to install
and use

2008-11-14 - (Guy Van Sanden) Zarafa is becoming an option too. It was
AGPL'd recently and offers many features including CalDAV in the
upcoming 6.30 release.

2008-11-14 - (Stuart Cianos) Only the server-side components of Zarafa
were opened up... There are still numerous proprietary functions that
are unavailable in the AGPL version. There are plenty of completely open
solutions out there (Horde, Citadel, Kolab, etc.) Personally, I use
Citadel (with Funambol for push e-mail) due to its funtionality,
reliability, speed and flexibility... They also have a fantastic
developer/user community that is supportive and communicative.

2008-11-15 - (Guy Van Sanden) @Stuart Cianos Actually most of it seems to be
in the AGPL version except for the client license required for Outlook usage.
Which is logical, if you are paying for closed source outlook you should also
pay for the connector...
I know about citadel, have been running it for 2 years but it does have some
issues and lacks certain features like LDAP integration.

2008-11-16 (Stuart Cianos) @Guy Van Sanden: Citadel will allow you to
authenticate against any service which support the underlying
authentication of the operating system (in this case, PAM). I have used
this to authenticate users against PAM using modules such as pam_ldap;
additionally, it can automatically populate an LDAP directory with
information from its global address book for use with external clients.

2008-11-29 (Giorgio Zarrelli) I do not see eGroupware, what about it?

2008-12-01 (Guy Van Sanden) @Stuart: I tried PAM based authentication on
Ubuntu, but it only works with pam_unix and not pam_krb5 or pam_ldap for me.
Though I really like Citadel in many ways, it has too many limitations to use
it as a full-blown groupware server like Zimbra or Zarafa. Zimbra is nice, but
it really needs a dedicated server to run properly.
@Giorgio: eGroupWare is not a groupware server but rather a Web frontend to
other servers.

[Blueprint improved-power-management] Improved Power Management

2008-12-01 Thread Arnaud Quette
Blueprint changed by Arnaud Quette:

Whiteboard changed to:

* Powerman - PDU support (http://powerman.sourceforge.net/):
  - Debian ITP (done)
  - Debian package upload (mostly done, upload underway)
  - Ubuntu sync (waiting)

* Network UPS Tools - NUT:
  - DeviceKit-power integration (under talk with Richard Hughes, scheduled for
2.4)
  - dummy-ups repeater mode (communication link redundancy and forwarding)
(done, trunk)
  - base PDU support (~6 SNMP units) (done, trunk)
  - extended PDU support, through libpowerman (done, trunk)
  - sub devices (present UPS' outlets as devices, to allow per outlet
subscription and management) (approved for 2.4, but only if available in time)
  - virtual devices (composite devices, made of several UPSs (parallel, serial
or sequential redundancy modes) and/or PDUs) (under consideration for 2.4)
- configuration improvements: provide some library / backend to develop a
config wizard (python and/or debconf). configuration is definitely NUT's
weakest point, apart from the HAL/DK-p backends! (approved for 2.4, but only if
available in time)

[Bug 294728] Re: Public shares not possible in home folder (Hardy 8.04)

2008-12-01 Thread Thierry Carrez
Can't reproduce this on hardy.

Starting from a virgin minimal install:
$ sudo apt-get install samba (3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7 gets installed)
$ mkdir ~/Gemeinsam
$ chmod 0777 ~/Gemeinsam
and defining the [Gemeinsam] share as stated in comment 2: I can read/write to
the share alright.

Maybe you changed the default home directory permissions on your hardy
host ?

[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10

2008-12-01 Thread mipper
So to summarize your summary,

if you don't have any control over the server - which was running fine
with the 8.04 client - you're stuffed! I don't understand how a bug in
the server is causing something that works under 8.04 to stop working
under 8.10, and I really can't understand why fixing this doesn't seem
to be an urgent issue. It wasn't the introduction of anything new on
the server side that caused this problem to arise, it was an update to
the client - or am I still missing something?

Regards,

mipper

 Just to summarize again:
 1) A few versions of Samba server had a bug parsing DFS paths (fixed
in Samba server 3.0.26). You can see which version of server you have
mounted to by doing cat /proc/fs/cifs/Debug
Data on the client). When the Linux CIFS client added support for
DFS last year, those few (relatively old) versions of Samba servers
(when configured for DFS) exhibited problems with certain path based
calls (setting the file size was one) which can break some common
 applications.

 2) Although disabling the cifs unix extensions (mount option nounix)
may help in some cases, the best solution is to upgrade the Samba
server to any of the more recent versions of the server. If that is
not possible, disabling DFS support (see comment 50) in the server is
another possibility (on future kernels, 2.6.28 includes this e.g., you
will be able to specify nodfs as a mount option on the client to
workaround the problems on these two versions of Samba).

[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10

2008-12-01 Thread Thierry Carrez
mipper:
This is a bug about servers claiming they support something that they don't. If
client stuff makes use of that something and trust servers to properly
implement what they claim they do, it doesn't work. It happens that the client
stuff in Intrepid takes advantage of those advanced features, while the client
stuff in hardy didn't.

The fix:
Fix your server by upgrading to a non-affected version.

However, we understand that the server might not be easily upgradable.
For example it might be a closed NAS box with a sucky warranty. For
those few stuck with buggy servers, we provide the following
workarounds:

- If you have access to the samba configuration on the server, you can add
msdfs root = no in smb.conf
- If you have no access whatsoever to the server, a new kernel providing a
nodfs client-side mount option is being published. You will be able to use
that option to turn off the advanced features in the client stuff for Intrepid.

[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10

2008-12-01 Thread Jim Lehmer
To follow up on mipper's point, here's what I don't understand:

1) My server is Ubuntu 8.04, currently patched.

2) I upgraded my workstation from 8.04 to 8.10 and lose the ability to
have my CIFS shares on the server mounted automatically at boot time as
they were right up until I upgraded.

3) So, if it's the server's fault, why hasn't Ubuntu pushed out the
appropriate patches to 8.04?

The common thread in all of this is Ubuntu, and therefore IMHO Ubuntu
should FIX IT.

Thanks for the clarification, Thierry. I am, alas, in the last position, so
am very interested in knowing when the new kernel will be published. I
can't find any target dates on this bug report and it's the lack of any
visibility on when the fix might be released that's so frustrating. How
does one find out when the release will be.

[Bug 303458] [NEW] segfault in pam_smbpass.so

2008-12-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

I'm using Ubuntu Intreprid Ibex AMD64, and have all updates installed.
I have samba and libpam-smbpass installed with the last version.

But, If I try to use sudo in a terminal, it ask me my password ans then crash
with a segmentation fault.
All is similar to the bug #260687, but I have the folder /var/lib/samba

So, I habe open a terminal with 2 tabs :
1: executing tail -f /var/log/*.log
2: executing sudo apt-get update

I got this in the first tab :
Nov 29 15:45:44 zUbuntu kernel: [14002.485973] sudo[8365]: segfault at 0 ip
7f619a412d6c sp 7fffa434aa50 error 4 in
pam_smbpass.so[7f619a3ab000+149000]

( ip and sp value changed each time ).

If I remove the libpam-smbpass package, all work fine ( else I have no shares ).
I have try to remove with --purge and re-install, but same result.

[Bug 289470] Re: open-iscsi user-space does not match kernel module version

2008-12-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package open-iscsi - 2.0.870.1-0ubuntu1

---
open-iscsi (2.0.870.1-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
   - Support 2.6.26/27 kernels (LP: #289470).
   - Fix iscsid shutdown (LP: #181188).
  * Merge from Debian. Remaining Ubuntu changes:
   - Note: Debian version isn't 870~rc3 but 869.2 which leads to a big
.diff.gz file. Only files in debian/ have been considered for this merge
since debian hasn't patched the source.
   - debian/control, debian/rules, debian/open-iscsi-udeb*:
 + Add open-iscsi-udeb.
   - debian/open-iscsi.dirs:
+ rename dirs to open-iscsi.dirs because of open-iscsi-udeb addition.
+ drop network/if-up.d/ directory since we're using symlinks instead.
+ utilities installed in /bin,/sbin rather than /usr/bin,/usr/sbin.
   - debian/open-iscsi.init:
+ utilities installed in /bin,/sbin rather than /usr/bin,/usr/sbin.
 + lsb log messages.
+ Don't generate initiatorname name (moved to postinst).
+ Support for being called from ifup/ifdown scripts.
 + Refactor start functions:
   - move daemon start to startdaemon function.
   - call udevadm settle rather then udevsettle (which doesn't do anything
 useful).
   - don't exit if the daemon is already running during sanitychecks.
Instead check in startdaemon if the daemon needs to be started.
   - only start automatic targets if necessary.
   - add waitfordevices function: called during rcS, waits for all
automatic targets to be ready. Iscsi targets are considered as
local block devices - they don't need to be marked with _netdev in
 fstab. (LP: #227848)
   - start targets if not run from rcS.
+ Check status of iscsid daemon in addition to listing the iscsi sessions
   when status action is called.
+ Add iscsid to the list of processes that should not be killed by
   sendsigs during shutdown (LP: #192080).
+ Add starttargets, stoptargets and restarttargets to usage message.
   - debian/rules:
 + Install utilities /bin,/sbin rather than /usr/bin,/usr/sbin.
+ Start open-iscsi at S25 (waiting for devices created by ifupdown
calls and before local filesystems are checked and mounted)
+ stop at S41 (after local filesystems are unmounted). Don't use
umountiscsi.sh script from debian. (LP: #192080).
   - debian/initiatorname.iscsi, debian/open-iscsi.postinst:
+ Generate the random initiatorname during postinstall rather than in the
 init script.
 + Don't ship a default initiatorname.iscsi file.
   - debian/open-iscsi.postinst:
+ fix init script ordering on upgrades.
   - debian/open-iscsi.links:
+ symlink open-iscsi init script in if-up.d and if-down.d directory so
that the iscsi subsystem is started/stopped when network interfaces
   are configured.
   - debian/open-iscsi.postrm:
+ delete iscsi configuration when the package is purged.
   - utils/iscsi_discovery: De-bashify iscsi_discovery.
   - usr/idbm.c: Fix build failure with new glibc. LP: #299843.
  * Dropped:
   - Exit without error if /sys is not available. Otherwise, it's not possible
to use this package as a build-dependency (in Debian).
   - Drop upstream url in long description now that it's in the Homepage
 field (in Debian).

[Bug 304291] Re: Suspend to Ram or to Disk not Wokring on Asus VX2

2008-12-01 Thread supernova_hq
Open your sources, enable Proposed, then run the updater and get 2.6.27-10
This update fixed my suspend (YEEEY).

Note: using the command line does not work (packages ... held back), you
must do it via the GUI updater.

Hope this helps other people.
Now if I can only fix the volume button rapid-fire problem

[Bug 304307] [NEW] update-cracklib does not include newly installed wordlists

2008-12-01 Thread Shiv V
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cracklib-runtime

I installed libpam-cracklib then a bunch of wordlists. Running the
cracklib-runtime daily cron script does not update the dictionary in
/var/cache/cracklib. Turns out that the cron job calls /usr/sbin
/update-cracklib, which compares the mod times of wordlist files to the
dictionary in /var/cache/cracklib and does not include the wordlist
unless it is newer than the dictionary. Makes sense except that the
timestamps on the newly installed dictionaries do not reflect when they
were installed but rather when they were packaged. Workaround is to
delete the files in /var/cache/cracklib and rebuild from scratch using
the cron job.

Ubuntu: 8.10 i386
cracklib-runtime: 2.8.12-2ubuntu1

[Bug 263160] Re: hardy / ibex - raid5 - ata#: hard resetting link

2008-12-01 Thread q
Pretty fed up with people saying this could be so many different issues.
So much so that i finally decided to risk my data to prove it read
the following.

***___This has got to be the card / chipset / sata_mv driver._***

Short and simple version of my issues:
- This does not depend on drive types
- Appears to be caused by MV88SX6081 chipset
- Could be a problem in SATA_MV driver
- I need replacement controller suggestions

Details to all non believers (it’s not a power / hardware issue):
I moved 5 of the 7 drives to my onboard controller (have 6 sata ports on the
mobo, last was used by the system drive).
Left 2 of the western digital drives on the MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II:
- sdg
- sdh

After the advice of some through email, I unplugged everything that wasn't
needed. They assumed that it could have been power giving the number of drives
I had in the machine. What was left on a tx750w corsair power supply:
- mobo (c2d, 4gb ram)
- 7 sata raid drives - spread across multiple power supply rails
- 1 sata system drive
- Super Micro SAT2-MV8 (MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II)
- intel pcie 10/100/1000 network card

Then I replaced the sate cables 1 more time with old cables I knew worked. I
also threw in the brand new controller card as well (have a few spares lying
around).
I brought everything up and upgraded to:

Then I started to rebuild the raid. Everything went fine, no freezes.
**This was the first indication that this only happens under heavy load on
multiple ports as has been brought up before.
So then I started copying data over. About 180GB's the card hard reset both of
the drives attached to it and knocked them both out of the raid.
**This was also significantly different from before when I was utilizing all
the ports as it seemed to work great for quite some time, it wasn't until I was
well into the process that the card finally gave up.
See the attached dmesg and /var/log/messages. This is the 2nd time I’ve had
this card degrade my raid and almost give me a heart attack.

The cards are going in the trash at this point. I'm open to suggestions as to
possibly replacement. I don’t need a hardware raid card, just a decent
controller with great *nix support and lots of ports.
::sigh:: I don’t know who to contact but this is the end of the line for me
with this controller and hopefully my issues.

Attempting to get my data back as we speak with 2 failed drives in a
raid 5... wonderful times.

[Bug 196009] Re: Printing a transparent gif header result in a completely black header.

2008-12-01 Thread Till Kamppeter
Can you please attach /var/spool/cups/d* and pdftopdfout.pdf?

Please do an actual printout with the HP Deskjet 990C/Gutenprint queue.
Does the GIF come out black?

Did you install both the foomatic-db-gutenprint and ijsgutenprint
packages? In system-config-printer you choose HP, DeskJet 990C, and
then HP DeskJet 990C Foomatic/gutenprint-ijs.5.2. Do also an actual
print out with this queue and tell whether the GIF comes out correctly.

[Bug 303901] [NEW] system monitor applet does not update stats on mouseover, nor gives useful average

2008-12-01 Thread njh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Currently, mousing over the applet is worthless. You are given the
instantaneous value (be it cpu or network), and the value is not
updated. To make it useful, it needs either to update the value
continuously, or show the average over the visible window.

Without these the user has no way to calibrate the graph either because
of the dynamic ranging, making the whole output no more useful than
'it's doing something'.

istanbul 0.2.2-4, interpid, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU.
Attached is the output of istanbul --gst-debug-level=5 --gst-debug-no-color
(gzipped).
Recording starts around line 16155 and stops right at the end.

I can stop istanbul using ctrl-C while it is recording. Once I try to
stop it ctrl-C no longer works and I have to kill the process (send
SIGTERM using killall)

[Bug 303904] [NEW] kmail loses sent emails!!!

2008-12-01 Thread LimCore
Public bug reported:

Upon inspecting the local Sent folder, I noticed that a number of messages that
where sent from kmail,
(and are normally visible in example in GMAIL sent folder, even in GMAIL
disconnected imap Sent folder)
are not visible in the main (build-in / local) Sent folder.

I need to debug this more.

IMHO this is a critical issue, since for non-IMAP storage, it means
loosing archive of sent e-mails.

[Bug 303905] [NEW] radio streams continue to play when x server is reset

2008-12-01 Thread TWO
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gecko-mediaplayer

Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 with all updates as of 1st December 2008.

Packages:
gecko-mediaplayer 0.7.0-1ubuntu2
gnome-mplayer 0.7.0ubuntu1
mplayer 2:1.0rc2-0ubuntu17
firefox: 3.0.4+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1

If one happens to reset the X server system via the ctrl + alt +
backspace command whilst one is listening to radio streams (which I
presume are windows media format), the sound continues to play during
the reset process and beyond completing log-in back into the system.

The problem is that even when the Firefox session is restored after
logging in, it attempts to open new streaming windows as opposed to the
ones that were open in the previous session and it remains impossible to
stop the already running streams without killing the 'mplayer' processes
that are running in the System Monitor.

I would expect that the streams would stop with resetting the server, or
at least for the stream controls provided by gecko-mediaplayer/mplayer
to be restored.

To reproduce, install gecko-mediaplayer and open up any radio stream
(maybe of any file format, but in this case Windows Media) and then
reset the X server system via the ctrl + alt + backspace shortcut.

It's unlikely - but not impossible.

Okay, I can back it out and reupload the other fixes, if you think

I do. The rest of the changes in 0.5~beta3-0ubuntu6.1 look fine to me for

BTW, there was also a stray 3kloc jockey-debug.log included in the last

[Bug 303908] [NEW] Sound completely non-functional

2008-12-01 Thread Michael Jones
Public bug reported:

upon doing a distribution update to the Jaunty alpha a few days ago, my
system's sound is completely non-functional. sound works fine in my
dual-booted windows XP install, and it worked great in intrepid Ibex.
The change happened immediately after rebooting after the update to the
jaunty alpha.

I have no idea what might be causing the problem out of the hundreds of
package updates between the release of the alpha and today.

please let me know how I can help track down this problem. The model of
laptop that i use is used by over 500 students at my school, and
slightly upgraded hardware by another 500 students. Our LUG ( of which i
am a member) has a hard enough time convincing students to try Linux as
it is, and non-functional sound would more than likely be a dealbreaker
for some people, come the 9.04 release.

I'll tell you how to get freeze info: after reboot look into system logs
(gnome-system-log is good for this), find place where system was running
before freeze, there should be some last words of kernel.

[Bug 294123] Re: 2.6.27 SATA drives not accessible at boot time, 2.6.24 working

2008-12-01 Thread mklemm
Thank you for the hint to bug 289754 .
Unfortunately, however, the issue isn't solved with 2.6.27-10-generic for me.
Also, it seems that bug 289754 is about an issue with the driver for the nvidia
chipset SATA controller, where in my case it is the intel ICH8 chipset driver
(ata_piix)...
Also, if you look at the dmesg output attached to bug 289754 , you can see that
in that case SATA error messages occured *after* the SATA link has already been
reported up. In the case here, however, there are no error messages, it
simply says SATA link down, just as if no disks were connected.

[Bug 289898] Re: [bcm...] Network-manager causes system lockup when connecting to specific encrypted network

2008-12-01 Thread Michael Jones
HI folks,

I have still yet to hear from anyone about this issue. I know that closed
source drivers are not supportable by the community, but as i've already said,
this issue only started affecting me when i upgraded from hardy to intrepid. I
am fairly certain that that upgrade did not include any driver packages which
leads me to believe that the regression happened elsewhere.

Could someone please point me in the right direction to track down this
problem?

I would really appreciate a reply, I have no idea where to start
looking on this.

-Mike
