2009-02-15 Thread Andreas Olsson
Seems as if there could have been some other apt process, perhaps an
automatic upgrade, going on in the background. That would have blocked
your current apt-get install and produced the exact same error.

What happens if you make another attempt to install postfix?

[Bug 329682] [NEW] samba lock files (also local ones)

2009-02-15 Thread kaiszy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Hi!

Since several week i have a big problem with my samba-server: When i try
to get access to a file from a client, the client hangs. Then i try to
access the file direct on the samba-server with same effect (client
hangs). When i access other files, it work (both, from client and on
sambaserver direct).

After shutdown the sambaserver (/etc/init.d/samba stop) i can access the
file local on the sambaserver (but of course not from a client).

When i make a ps fax after the sambaserver stops there will be one
smbd process that is still running. I have to kill it with kill -KILL
pid to stop it (and restart the sambaserver. When i start the
sambaserver again everything works well (untikl next lock).

In the logfiles there is nothing special.

As attachment you will find further information.

CU,
   Kai.

Re: [Bug 252900] Re: vfat : wubi 8.04.1-rev506 kernel upgrade fails

2009-02-15 Thread bobc4012

Thanks for the input Keith. Makes sense, since the only
system I have encountered this problem is a lap-top that
was formatted as FAT32. My desktop is formatted as
NTFS and my other lap-top is ext 2/3 (only runs Ubuntu).

However, the partition type should be irrelevant to Ubuntu
(or any Linux system running on a Windows machine). A
file system is a file system and should be independent of
the HD characteristics. The Host System I/O routines
should be the only software aware f the HD record structure.
The Ubuntu (Linux) update routines should just be dealing
at a higher level and unconcerned with lower level formats.
Sounds like either a design flaw in Ubuntu (Linux) or a bug.

Regards Bob

Hi, folks:

Fix for the bug THAT WORKED for me:

1) Convert the file structure on the partition Ubuntu resides on from FAT to
NTFS.
2) Reload Ubuntu

All updates and patches will apply without fail.

Good luck.

[Bug 329638] Re: Document Viewer 2.24.1 closes viewing .pdf-files larger than 20 MB

2009-02-15 Thread Hew McLachlan
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 292086] Re: Fix zstar vimicro webcam (0ac8:303b)

2009-02-15 Thread Chris Carlin
Update manager has not invited me to upgrade to the proposed kernel. I
see the 12.28 release of various packages sitting in the repository, but
of course the upgrade is distributed across various packages ranging

So, before I go back and forth to see what's installed now versus what I
can install, does anyone know offhand what packages are needed to update
to this proposed release?

[Bug 329644] [NEW] Alt-SysReq-K has no effect, or unintended effect (depending on system it is used on)

2009-02-15 Thread Michael Jones
Public bug reported:

On the Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list there has been some discussion
(most recently in Digest, Vol 27, Issue 42) about Control Alt Backspace.

An alternate key sequence was noted: Alt-SysReq-K.

I've been asked to post a bug detailing that this key sequence does
not seem to have any effect, and on some of my systems simply brings up
the screenshot dialog, even if the print screen button is not the same
as SysReq (which it is on some of them, but not all of them.)

Some preliminary details:

I have a (slightly) modified NW8440 laptop workstation made by HP in
2006 running Intrepid Ibex on a core duo, with an ATI graphics card.

I have a built from OEM parts desktop that was put together this
new-years with a Core 2 Quad, 4 gigaybytes of ram, and an NVidea
graphics card.

And earlier tonight I was at my friends place helping him set up
Ubuntu on the desktop that he just recieved via FedEx, and this same
command sequence had no noticeable effect, on either the Live cd
environment, or the installed environment. I know his processor is AMD,
but I don't know any other details than that.

Could someone perhaps direct me to where i could find useful
information to append to this bug report?

Thanks,

-Michael Jones

It will start trying to wake up, but after a few seconds, my laptop will
shutdown and after more few second start/wake up/switch on/whatever
again, but with black screen and absolutely no control - not responding
to key pressing - in my opinion - kernel panic. I have to do hard
shutdown of my laptop. Same behavior in Arch Linux, kernel 2.6.28, but
older versions of kernel, or any other package does the same error :-(

My laptop is MSI EX600X-074CZ. Current Ubuntu: 9.04 some latest alpha.

[Bug 223883] Re: [Hardy] update manager crashed and broken after upgrade

2009-02-15 Thread Uwe L. Korn
Please try an

apt-get clean
apt-get update
aptitude reinstall

So that the package is newly downloaded and reinstalled, this may fix
problem that occured after your installation crashed. If the crash
during the install may happen again, please copy that output too.

PS: It seems from the main.log, that you may not have enough disk space,
please check this too.

Usually it does so with large documents.
I have seen that OpenOffice does not use much RAM with small files and with
large file. Perhaps is this the problem??

Re: [Bug 329578] [NEW] [jaunty] Add more dependencies of codecs to winff

2009-02-15 Thread Paul Gevers
Please correct me if I am wrong, but all winff needs is ffmpeg for
coding. However most presets only work with the unstripped version, ie
when libavcodec-unstripped-xx (with xx the current number, now 52) is
installed, as mentioned in the description, in
/usr/share/winff/README.Debian, and pulled in if you installed the
suggested package (k|x|)ubuntu-restricted-extras.

As far as I understand the dependencies that you mention are only needed
at build time of ffmpeg.

[Bug 329650] [NEW] Auto mounted CD should always have an Explore option. Right click menu should also have a Properties item.

2009-02-15 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

A friend recently gave me a DVD which contained a couple of VOBs of his
band playing gigs from which he wanted me extract a couple of songs for
YouTube.

So I insert the DVD into my Linux machine, it was auto mounted, and an
icon appears on the GNOME panel with the options of Play and Eject
$DVD_LABEL. Sadly neither of these options are of use as I want to
know where the DVD is mounted so I can browse it.

Additionally when I right click on the icon in the panel the menu
doesn't contain a Properties item which would allow me to see where
the DVD has been mounted.

I therefore have *no clue whatsoever* where the item has been mounted or
how to get to it so I can access the files it contains (in reality I
know that DVDs are mounted in /media so I was able to find the files
but the GNOME desktop gives me no idea where the DVD had been mounted)

I therefore propose two things.

Firstly that the menu shown against all removable media (anything that
causes an icon to be added to the panel) should always have an option
for Explore on it. No exceptions. When this option is selected the
item in question should be explored. If necessary the volume should
also be transparently automounted first.

Secondly it should be a standard that everything visible to the user as
an icon should have a Properties item available on it's right click
menu that will always give basic information about the object. i.e.
similar to the item available when you right click an item in the right
hand pane of a Nautilus Window (note this is only on the right hand
pane, again this functionality is missing from items in the left hand
Nautilus panes)

In Windows Explorer you have the option to double click an object
representing removable media which will launch the default action for
the item (for DVDs this is to play them with the default media player)
However there is always an Explore action available which, for users
like me, is regularly used (In fact I never double click media icons as,
even though I run with it switched off, this could also cause the items
autoplay rubbish to be run infecting my machine with a Sony rootkit
etc. etc.).

Again in Windows when you right click almost any icon (or list view
item) you can get a properties window which will give you basic
information about the item. Invariably the General tab contains the
location of the item in the file system which is invaluable.

Without this functionality GNOME is severly lacking when compared to
Windows.

[Bug 329655] [NEW] Launchpad bug reporting should have a preview function.

2009-02-15 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Firstly I'm sorry to raise this against nautilus but there is no
option to raise bugs against Launchpad itself, I couldn't raise a bug
against any package that contained the word Launchpad (despite them
being offered in the Choose dialogue) and I couldn't find anywhere
else to raise the such a bug (Googling for how to do this simply gives
thousands of hits on how to use Launchpad to raise bugs against various
products) .

This feature request therefore relates to the behaviour of page:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug#form-start

When using launchpad to report a bug it would be nice to have a
preview function which would allow me to see the bug report as it will
look when posted. That way I might catch my spelling and grammar errors
before a bug is posted (it's far easier to read text on a page as
opposed to in an edit box)

This function should work similarly to the preview function used in many
bulletin boards (PHPBB) and Slashdot, etc. where an edit box is always
presented with a submit and preview button. In fact it's not a pain
to be always forced to preview your post at least once as I, for one,
don't seem able to spot mistakes in an edit control as easily as I can
when I'm reading a page (probably because my brain is in edit rather
than read mode :)

I have the same problem. If I update to 8.10 then the problem is fixed.
But then I have a problem with Mythtv volume control. So at the moment I
am stuck on 8.04.

To fix my problem I start with a new install.
Then
sudo umount /home/yourhome/.gvfs
sudo rmdir /home/yourhome/.gvfs
sudo apt-get remove gvfs-fuse

Restart and then update your system and add your other applications

[Bug 329656] [NEW] flash objects always fail to load at theonion.com

2009-02-15 Thread Robert Persson
Public bug reported:

Bug in intrepid. Firefox 3.0.5, flashplugin-nonfree
10.0.15.3ubuntu1~intrepid1, nspluginwrapper 1.1.2-0ubuntu1 on amd64
intrepid. Can also be reproduced in Opera.

Whenever I try to load a page at theonion.com containing a flash object
containing a video or an audio stream, the object fails to load.

Examples:
http://www.theonion.com/content/radio_news/u_s_teens_lead_world_in?utm_source=a-section
http://www.theonion.com/content/video/sony_releases_new_stupid_piece_of

I understand that this may well be the result of defects within the
Flash player itself, but lack of Flash is a serious usability issue for
the average user, so getting a workaround is very important. Many
thanks.

[Bug 329647] Re: package postfix None [modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/postfix.list] failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-02-15 Thread Andreas Olsson
Seems as if there could have been some other apt process, perhaps an
automatic upgrade, going on in the background. That would have blocked
your current apt-get install and produced the exact same error.

What happens if you make another attempt to install postfix?

[Bug 277460] Re: No sound in totem.

2009-02-15 Thread David Henningsson
Magnus, Jaunty is the upcoming release of Ubuntu. You can download a
live-CD and try it without changing your harddrive from:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

Btw, for getting specific Swedish sites (such as SVT) to work, search
the forum at http://ubuntu-se.org , perhaps there is a solution there.

[Bug 58205] Re: Should provide Right-Click-Format...

2009-02-15 Thread Mikko Saarinen
I agree that this is a bug and was indeed going to write a bug report
myself but came across this one. Thanks Paul :)

Paul has mentioned all the places where an average user would search for
this task, but here is what should also be taken into account:

1. Formatting an usb stick should NOT request admin priviledges.
- In a business environment, this should be a task that a user can do himself,
without contacting the support personnel (this is why I had to take my
workplace's usb stick home to be formatted, as our office's Windows XP did not
let me do it...).

2. There should be a choice for which file system to use.
- This should default to the one already residing on the stick for a fast
re-format, but should the user need to, there would be an options-button for a
full list of file systems to use.

Thanks,
Mikko

[Bug 329659] [NEW] Kmail doesn't expand folders when dragging

2009-02-15 Thread Aurélien Couderc
Public bug reported:

I have a lot of folders and subfolders in my Inbox, so they are rarely all
expanded.
When I start dragging a mail from Inbox, I can't put it in a colapsed
subfolder. Kmail doesn't automatically expand colapsed folders when I leave my
mouse over it while dragging.

So I have to release the mouse button, manually expand the folder, and
then drag and drop the mail to the now visible subfolder.

It's not really a bug, but a very common feature that is missing.

With Totem if a play a video or i'm playing a song with visual effects

[Bug 329644] Re: Alt-SysReq-K has no effect, or unintended effect (depending on system it is used on)

2009-02-15 Thread DaneM
Michael,

Thanks for reporting this bug, as it affects me as well.

I have only tried it on my home Desktop computer, a Core 2 Duo machine
with an nVidia 9600GT (by Asus) graphics card, using the proprietary
nVidia driver; a logitech Cordless Desktop keyboard and (optical) mouse
(model Y-RAJ56A, with sysrq on the prtscr key); running Ubuntu 8.10 with
all updates (but no backports).

I have also tried using the right alt key as altgr instead of the
prtscr/sysrq key, as suggested at some sites (which I don't remember
what the addresses were or how I got there...). Additionally, I have
tried a number of other key combinations, such as
leftalt+shift+prtscr/sysrq+k, to no avail.

I should note, however, that my TTYs are all functional (F1-F6), and
respond as expected to alt+sysrq+R/E/I/S/U/B and alt+sysrq+K. It's only
in the Gnome GUI that there is no affect, other than asking the user
whether to save a screenshot. :-p

I have also tried setting different keyboard models (us105, Logitech
Cordless Desktop [and alternate], and Logitech Cordless Desktop
Optical), different combinations of alt/win key behavior and compose
key position (in systempreferenceskeyboard), mapping print
screen/screen shot to different key combinations (in
systempreferenceskeyboard shortcuts), and lots of various button
mashing. :-)

Please let me/us (Michael et al) know if there's any further information
that may be of assistance in solving this problem. With
ctrl+alt+backspace disappearing in the next release, I think it's going
to be important to get this resolved as soon as is reasonably possible.
(Please note that I don't mean to put undue pressure on anybody by
saying this.)

Thanks, Devs, for all your work; you make Ubuntu great!
