[Blueprint swapfile-in-the-installer] Support Swapfiles at Installation

2009-04-17 Thread Scott James Remnant
Blueprint changed by Scott James Remnant:

Assignee: Scott James Remnant = Dustin Kirkland

Whiteboard changed to:

One common item is a multiboot setup. If this were implemented, and it
would do a mkswap for official swapfiles when activating them, I could
share large, contiguous files (e.g. windows PAGEFILE.SYS) among the
systems instead of having several large files, one for each OS.

If in the installer, there is a partition going to be mounted, allow the
user to select a file. As a post-install, add a swapfile manager where
files can be selected, created, or removed.

scott - I'm not touching the installer ;)

The patch looks a bit weird. Isn't the entire idea of dovecot-postfix to

Re: [Bug 362427] Re: Public key ssh auth doesn't work with my Encrypted Home Directory

2009-04-17 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Right, sorry, typed the wrong commands.

Here is an exact cut-and-paste. I left out a few details in the last
one, as it was merely pseudo code.

 $ /sbin/umount.ecryptfs_private
 $ cd $HOME
 $ chmod 700 .
 $ mkdir -m 700 .ssh
 $ chmod 500 .
 $ echo $YOUR_REAL_PUBLIC_KEY  .ssh/authorized_keys
 $ /sbin/mount.ecryptfs_private

Note that you should not have *any* other programs running between
those umount and mount commands, as all of your home directory will be
unreadable by those programs. If you're on a graphical desktop, log
out of all sessions and either ssh in, or login on the tty terminal.

I just tested the above commands and they work perfectly.

Re: [Bug 360891] Re: fatal errors during install

2009-04-17 Thread Ante Karamatić
U Pet, 17. 04. 2009., u 13:24 +, Martin Pitt je napisao/la:

The patch looks a bit weird. Isn't the entire idea of dovecot-postfix to
*not* require the user to configure postfix before? Shouldn't that
(ideally) be handled as integral part of configuring d-p?

At this point of development, no, dovecot-postfix can't know what type
of mail server user is setting up - is it a satelite system (with a
relay host) or stand alone mail server, or some special type of mail
server. We need user input on this, and postfix does a great job at that
- it offers couple of predefined use cases. dovecot-postfix just
integrates rest of the stuff (tls for all procotols, some postfix
security features, etc...).

This patch works around the problem when user doesn't choose any kind of
predefined configurations (when user selects 'No configuration'). In
that case, postfix package doesn't create main.cf file and
dovecot-postfix can't set up rest of the postfix variables. So, instead
of just exploding, with this patch, it offers the way out of the
situation.

[Bug 363077] Re: intrepid - jaunty upgrade fails [for default bacula installs]

2009-04-17 Thread Ante Karamatić
In bacula's log, there's info about postgresql not being started and
bacula-director not being configured. This is not the reason why bacula-
sd failed.

bacula-sd doesn't interact with sql database at all. I'll investigate
what happened.

[Bug 363077] Re: intrepid - jaunty upgrade fails [for default bacula installs]

2009-04-17 Thread Ante Karamatić
I can't reproduce it. I've installed intrepid and then bacula-sd-pgsql
bacula-sd bacula-director-pgsql. After that I did upgrade with
DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive and everything worked well. I even tried
without DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive.

Can you start it by runing /etc/init.d/bacula-sd start? It listens on
port 9103. Could it be that something else is listening on that port?

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.2

2009-04-17 Thread Caesar
do you expect apt to be more reliable in installing eclipse and its
numerous plugins than eclipse itself?

When I need my workspace on the clean machine I simply unpack my eclipse
installation with all its plugins. It is easier than installing
everything with apt and it is easier than fresh eclipse install and then
plugins install with internal installer.

And I don't need to configure tons of tiny things for every plugin.

Apt and eclipse can live together only when all plugins will have
their's own debs maintained by plugin's developers. In any other case
you'll have eventually install something through eclipse's internal
installer which is bad. Not because it's just bad but because you will
have two managers - apt and eclipse messing with the same software. You
will never be sure which way to use next time because one will work
better for one set of lugins and other will work for some other set, and
you will never know who's responsible of the failure - plugin creator,
eclipse, or repo package maintainer.

[Bug 362956] [NEW] system monitor applet (multiload-applet-2) won't show logical volume disk activities

2009-04-17 Thread Jesse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

the multiload applet always shows zero disk activity when most of the
partitions are on lvm2 logical volumes. When external real disks like usb
thumbdrives are inserted though, the disk I/O activity is correctly shown.

Re: [Bug 342923] Re: (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

2009-04-17 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Since RC is already released and the issue is still there, I think
there is almost no chance of getting it fixed before the final release
!!!

So, I have reverted back to Intrepid and I am happy now !

Users having these intel chipsets should be strongly discouraged from
upgrading/installing Jaunty 9.04, until there is a fix.
The known issues section of the release notes should mention this
problem (and possible temporary solutions like UXA, EXA etc).

I would suggest warning the intel chipset users by means of a 'Warning
Dialog' before the installation stage. I guess it would be prevent the
users from wasting their time, unless they want to experience the
problem for themselves !!

 OK,

 a. what icon shall we use in the notification then? does that exist yet?

Yes, it exists. It's vertical bars with the little 3G label in the top
left. Ken Wimer knows which one this is.

 b. what icon should we ship as a fall back for non-human themes (we need to
ship the fallback in the applet package)?

Whatever is the current default non-Human for 3G. Ken?

Re: [Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.2

2009-04-17 Thread Alwin Garside
I made my own packages of Eclipse and a bunch of plugins using the
release tarballs from eclipse.org:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~yogarine/+archive/ppa

I did this because from my experience installing Eclipse and then
installing all the plugins you want is always a big hassle that can
take up a whole hour. Why go to all that trouble if you can just type:

sudo apt-get install eclipse-pdt

Just give my ppa a try and I'm sure you'll like the idea.

On Fri, Apr 17, 2009 at 4:36 PM, Oli o...@thepcspy.com wrote:
Caesar, that's really dangerous thinking there. Those same arguments could
be levelled against lots of other mature apps that have their own
ecosystems... Surely you wouldn't suggest not packaging (for example)
 Firefox?

We use packages for a good reason: it keeps things sturdy and constant
between similar machines and results in a standardised install process you
can script for any machine. It also, psychologically speaking, instils an
ethos of installing things from a trusted source. Downloading things from
all-over the internet is one reason why the security landscape is so mired
 on Windows.

You might try and say that Eclipse appeals to a different audience but
looking at Add/Remove, it's is one of the most popular packages in the
package popularity contest for the Programming section, only beaten outright
by Python (for obvious reasons). People want it and they want to get it from
 Ubuntu's repositories.

I don't deny that downloading and untarring Eclipse from eclipse.org works
but that's not the point. Eclipse is major software that thousands (if not
millions) of people use. It's a waste of time doesn't seem like a valid
 argument.

On Fri, Apr 17, 2009 at 2:51 PM, Caesar gaius.jul...@gmail.com wrote:

Oli, I think the reason this will never be done is really simple: not
having elcipse package is not a problem.

 At all.

It's really easy to install eclipse manually, It have it's own internal
update, plugins installation and dependency resolving system. Same time,
any external update and plugins installation are complex, unreliable
and... just never worse the time spent on them vs. simplicity of eclipse
 manual installation and self-update.

Who want to kill days or even weeks on the problem that can be solved in
 other way in 5 minutes?

Just forget about the eclipse package. Anyone who need it will be able
 to install manually.

[Bug 362964] [NEW] NetworkManager stops running after disconnecting broadband mobile card

2009-04-17 Thread pvanderploeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

I have a Dell laptop Latitude D410 running Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10). On my way
to and from work I use a Broadband UMTS card (Qualcomm 3g CDMA model GT 3G
Quad) to connect to the mobile network of KPN in the Netherlands. Ubuntu
Intrepid recognizes the card without any problem and I connect to KPN's mobile
network by choosing gthe appropriate radiobutton in NetworkManager. Every now
and then however, the connection is lost due to network coverage problems. When
that happens the NetworkManager stops running and I have to restart it manually
(sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart) to reconnect to the mobile network.
package network-manager-gnome 0.7~~svn20081020t000444-0ubuntu1.8.10.2
I would expect networkmanager to keep running. Instead it stops running.

[Bug 362961] [NEW] Incorrect metadata when repositories are defined in sources.list.d

2009-04-17 Thread Andrew
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

When a repository is defined in a file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, the
metadata is not correctly loaded.

Steps to reproduce:
1) create /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu with contents (or use a different
repository):
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ intrepid free non-free

2) Add the GPG key for medibuntu (if you use a non-medibuntu repository, skip
this step)
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring sudo apt-get
update

3) Run aptitude, and under the UI options, include %t.
4) Open the package mplayer and go to the bottom. You will see that the package
from medibuntu has no archive flag (you can confirm this with other dpkg tools,
not just aptitude)

5) Move the repository definition from /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu to
/etc/apt/sources.list
6) Run sudo apt-get update. You can now confirm that it is working.

This is dangerous as it breaks apt preferences as the pin priorities
will not be able to match the packages.

Versions (Intrepid):
apt: 0.7.14ubuntu6
dpkg: 1.14.20ubuntu6.2

So, instead
of just exploding, with this patch, it offers the way out of the
situation.

[Bug 362966] [NEW] Can't install fglrx driver properly on ubuntu 9.04 RC, system crashes when installed.

2009-04-17 Thread mgun
Public bug reported:

Firstly, ubuntu 9.04 didn't recognize my graphic card (Radeon X1300) as it
usually do and there were no drivers at the Hardware Drivers application. I've
tried to install the driver using the synaptic. After I've installed the driver
(xorg-driver-fglrx and all that is connected to it) I've restarted my system
and it crashed just before the login window. I repeated the act (I've restarted
the computer again) and it happened again!
I entered the command line from the recovery mode and I removed the driver. Now
everything works fine, besides the fact that my video card still doesn't work.

[Bug 357365] Re: Keybindings consisting completely of modifier keys no longer work

2009-04-17 Thread Ken VanDine
Upstream compiz things this is actually a bug related to xkb in libX11.
Below is an excerpt from the compiz bug report:

Ok, looks like Jaunty's libX11 and/or X server are broken wrt Xkb events.
/usr/include/X11/XKBlib.h defines XkbStateNotifyEvent, which has a event_type
member:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libX11/tree/include/X11/XKBlib.h#n116

The comment in the header file says that this member is either set to KeyPress
or KeyRelease, which are defined to 2 and 3 according to the X protocol
headers:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/proto/xproto/tree/X.h#n186

For me, this was the case:
triggering state notify bindings in plugin text, mods 4, type 2
triggering state notify bindings in plugin workarounds, mods 4, type 2

For you, it's not:
triggering state notify bindings in plugin wobbly, mods 4, type 78
triggering state notify bindings in plugin switcher, mods 4, type 78

I am not sure where the values 78 and 79 are coming from, as they are defined
nowhere in Jaunty's X11 headers. But that's definitely the direction I would
suggest to look at :)

BTW, bindings with normal (non-modifier) keys are not affected, because they
are handled differently (not via XkbStateNotifyEvent, but via KeyPressEvent).

[Bug 362965] [NEW] zeroconf duplicate service entries

[Bug 168360] Re: Connectors between groups act weird

2009-04-17 Thread gag_halfrunt
Transformations of the objects, even if they are grouped together, are
working properly. But the problem arises if the origin of the drawing
(caused by the resizing of the page) changes.

Unfortunately ungrouping and regrouping doesn't fix the problem. Even
the restoration of the original page size doesn't help. Obviously the
code contains an arithmetic error which is not reversable. The only
workaround is to cut and paste the objects into an empty document, as
previous posters mentioned already.

It would be great if this bug could be fixed any time soon. Because I
very often export Inkscape drawings, that are supposed to be parts of
OpenOffice-documentations, as portable network graphics (.png). To avoid
big blank areas around the drawing I always reduce the page size to its
extents before I do the export. Of course I could export the drawing as
a selection in order to get the same result, but then the export dialog
suggest an automatically generated filename instead of the one the
drawing already has only with a different extension.

However, Inkscape is a very good and precise vector graphics design
tool that dramatically increases my productivity and it is extremely
intuitive to use. Another big plus is of course, that Inkscape is
running on multiple platforms. So many, many thanks to the whole
Inkscape team for their valuable work.
