[Bug 354378] Re: Deadlock when PAM_TEXT_INFO is used

2009-05-02 Thread cdmdotnet
I'm not sure if this is somewhat related but since I upgraded from 8.10
to 9.04 I cannot use anything that uses the newer authentication system.

I get an issue when I try to edit a network connection via the new network
manager or edit a user.
Taking the network manager example, I added a strace session to the
authenticate dialogue box , entered my password and watched the output... which
wasn't much - I've masked the password.

17:42:06.448553 read(0, \n..., 4096) = 9
17:42:15.951992 write(9, \n..., 9) = 9
17:42:15.952043 read(10, PAM_TEXT_INFO Could not locate an..., 4096) = 90
17:42:16.221059 write(1, PAM_TEXT_INFO Could not locate an..., 90) = 90
17:42:16.221115 read(0,

and that's it. it just hangs, I can't close the dialogue I can't do anything...
short of killing the process.
My system isn't using an AD authentication it should just be a stock standard
install of 8.10 upgraded to 9.04

cdmdotnet,

It sounds like you're describing the same basic issue here. You may be
able to get more useful information out of the error if you run strace
with '-s 128', so that you can see the full message - that won't get you
to a fix for this bug, but you might find out what extra information PAM
is trying to give you, and address that if it points to another problem.

[Bug 323857] Re: [LENOVO ThinkPad X200] suspend/resume problem

2009-05-02 Thread AK
the hibernate is definitely not work on my new Thinkpad x200s with new ubuntu
9.04 desktop installed. I have 2GB swap partition on.
I go on hibernate through the button at top-right corner (but special keyboard
button). Once the click hibernate, the screen will go dark, then 2 lines on top
about i guess the wireless network stopped etc. There's no error msg, but after
~10 seconds it will come back and ask me to log in (like after a screen saver
lock).
The swap usage will go up from 0Mb to 2-5Mb. All opened applications will be
there like a normal resume.
Thus hibernate not working. I never worked for me since 8.04.
I don't know about doing things with BIOS... don't think it matters.
If there's no solution, just say so, please don't ask 1000 of questions and
pretend you can help. Too many have the same problem and too many helper
tried without a solution in mind but questions after questions. I've gone
through too many forum and blog without answers.
Please help if you really have a solution. Many of thinkpad users will think
you for that.
cheers

Re: [Bug 369757] Re: hibernate does not work

2009-05-02 Thread Angelo Borsotti
Hello,

I have tried to do what you requested. This time, however, Hybernate behaves
differently from a couple of days ago, when I reported the problem: when I hit
Hybernate, the screen becomes black, and a few seconds later, a window
appears, with my username as title, an input field requesting my password, and
four buttons at the bottom: leave message, switch user, cancel, unlock.
The computer does not hybernate. If I enter the password, the desktop
is displayed.
I.e. it is as if Hybernate performed a lock screen.
I have then pressed CTRL + ALT + F2, installed the python-launchpadlib package,
and run sudo apport-collect -p linux 369757.
I hope something has been sent, many strange messages appeared.

Thank you
-Angelo

[Bug 345542] Re: linux-image-2.6.28-5-powerpc has ioremap fault with radeon drm module

2009-05-02 Thread Tormod Volden
You can look through the Ubuntu changelog and see if any Ubuntu changes
were made, then (since the -4 is based on 2.6.28 and the -5 on 2.6.28.1)
check the upstream changelog between 2.6.28 and 2.6.28.1.

If someone can build a vanilla 2.6.28 and 2.6.28.1 and test and compare,
to rule out any Ubuntu changes, it would be great.

[Bug 365527] Re: Jaunty freezes all the time

2009-05-02 Thread Ramaddan
I seem to have the same problem here.

My hardware contains an i945 intel graphic card, and an eGalax
touchscreen.

Actually, when I leave the PC alone, nothing seems to happen, but the
more I use the touchschreen, the higher chance that the PC freezes.

It's as if X freezes more so than the kernel, because it seems the
hardisk is still being accessed and so on.

Do you need nay information, and how would I go about providing it?

Thanks.

[Bug 370738] [NEW] volume not mounted

2009-05-02 Thread Angelo Borsotti
Public bug reported:

I have a dual boot configuration, with Ubuntu and Vista. From within Ubuntu I
can access the
Vista NTFS partitions.
However, if after login I open a terminal window, I cannot change the current
directory to a
NTFS partition (cd /media/Volume). See Screenshot1.
If I hit Places-Volume, then the Volume icon appears on the desktop, and then
I can
change the current directory in the terminal window. See Screenshot2.
It is as if Places mounted the Volume.

 Hi DM,

I've marked this bug as public rather than private. Additionally, I'll
try to notify the kernel team of this upstream fix, thanks for including
it in the report. Additionally, the upcoming Karmic 9.10 kernel will
automatically have this patch as it's already.

 Bug description:
i have DLink 530T (1Gb ethenet card). skge is driver for it. but since update
to ubuntu 9.04 (full reinstall). some times it stops transmitting packets
(and not back to work). ifconfig eth1 shows that rx is changing but tx is
not. pings are not going... the card on the internet port, so i lost internet
 periodically.
the `save` commands that help me to return it to work is
#modprobe -r skge modprobe skge service networking restart
but after a few times i run it skge breaks work as described above in a few
seconds after `save` command. and only computer restart helps.

it looks like this from changelog for 2.6.29.2 (skge disables the TX queue):

 commit 9fc79ab9a371b45166d80ef18411ea47cf8e3195
 Author: Michal Schmidt mschm...@redhat.com

skge: fix occasional BUG during MTU change

 upstream commit: d119b3927994e3d620d6adb0dd1ea6bf24427875

 The BUG_ON(skge-tx_ring.to_use != skge-tx_ring.to_clean) in skge_up()
was sometimes observed when setting MTU.

skge_down() disables the TX queue, but then reenables it by mistake via
 skge_tx_clean().
Fix it by moving the waking of the queue from skge_tx_clean() to the
other caller. And to make sure start_xmit is not in progress on another
 CPU, skge_down() should call netif_tx_disable().

The bug was reported to me by Jiri Jilek whose Debian system sometimes
failed to boot. He tested the patch and the bug did not happen anymore.

[Bug 354398] Re: Acer Aspire 8920G has inaudible audio by default

2009-05-02 Thread Tom
This bug-report seems to have been hi-jacked by a couple of people with
individual problems about this. It seems that the original question has
become slightly buried by these and doubtless we can expect a lot more
people to jump on this as it seems likely to affect a lot of people.

It is, of course, quite legitimate for people to seek help about this
issue here - certainly it's better than separate questions and separate
bug-reports springing up all over the place. I just hope people can
find a work-around!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

[Bug 368135] Re: X crashes after a few minutes or seconds (Jaunty)

2009-05-02 Thread floyd0815
It seems to be solved!
I used my touchscreen for a while and there are no freezes anymore.
(normally there would be 10 freezes in that time))

Don't know which package did it, but I installed:

xserver-xorg-core-dbg (2:1.6.0-0ubuntu14)
xserver-xorg-input-tslib (0.0.5-1ubuntu2)

and the freezes are gone.

I also activated the ath5k again, and I haven't recognized disconnections so
far.
(also not in the WPA-supplicant log)

2 flies with one hit!

Hopefully it is really solved!

[Bug 342923] Re: [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

2009-05-02 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Using the experimental PPA packages with UXA acceleration brought me
some observations after some hours of use, besides the occasional screen
flashes I had already reported (I use a blank scren screensaver that
fires up after 5 minutes):

1/ Once the screensaver blanks the screen, it will sometimes be
impossible to resume work. The screen is blank (black) and will remain
so. The machine is not hanged as it is still possible to shift to texte
console. But X is dead: Even killing X or restarting KDM won't result in
anything else than a blank screen until the machine is rebooted.

2/ Suspend to RAM : About half of the times, the KDE session is dead at
resume. The machine resumes on KDM login screen.

3/ Logging out the KDE session: Sometimes results in a blank (black)
screen where the system doesn't react anymore. Nothing can be done
locally except using the kernel's Magic SysRq keys. Machine will still
be remotely usable using SSH - well, for rebooting it...

So it looks that indeed the cure made things worse :-(

I've installed some new MesaGL updates from PPA this morning, but if it
doesn't bring an improvement I'll try reverting back to old Intrepid
drivers (wonder if I won't simply restore my system from my last
Intrepid backups and trash all that Jaunty Junk :-(

For everything was perfectly stable and working in Intrepid...

[Bug 363305] Re: [i915] DRM_I915_ENTERVT failed (SIGSEGV) (UXA bug)

2009-05-02 Thread Teudimundo
I tried with the 2.7.0 and the result is the same..
I attach the Xorg log file.
Is this bug going to be fixed in Jaunty? Because I cannot use EXA as well, in
that case I have to report a new bug for it
and hope that at least that one is going to be fixed otherwise it means I have
to work with the VESA driver and this is very annoying.

what I expected to happen : after doing a fresh install of Hardy Alpha 5, I
started the Restricted Driver Manager to install the broadcom firmware to
get my wireless working, just like I did in Gutsy. I expected the fwcutter
package to download and install the correct firmware, which is what happened
under Gutsy. In Gutsy, the little orange light turned blue right away ( my
machine is an HP dv6000 series laptop ) indicating that wireless is up and
 running.

 --
what happened instead : started the Restricted Driver manager now called
Hardware Drivers under System--Administration, clicked the checkbox for
the Broadcom firmware to be downloaded and installed. The Hardware Driver
manager told me it had downloaded and installed the firmware, however, the
orange light did not turn blue. I tried rebooting to see if that would make
a difference. It did not make a difference. No working wireless. This page :
 http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 seems to indicate that
various kernel versions need not just different versions of the firmware,
but different versions of the fwcutter program/package itself, as well.
Would be great if that could be integrated into Hardy before final release.

[Bug 364479] Re: [i965gm] Corrupted X after enabling UXA, unable to log into KDE (UXA bug)

2009-05-02 Thread Oenologist
That's what I suspected - somekind of config corruption (I don't
remember exactly but it happened a few weeks ago when a major upgrade
came). Nevermind.

Can you advise me any quick and painless way to reinstall those
packages? Any specific order of steps during reinstallation? Moreover,
is there a way to kind of reset X/system config to default, or
something?

I'd really like to avoid reinstalling the whole system for fear of
losing some data/the necessity of huge backups for which I currently
have no media to store.

The 2.7 driver seems to change nothing. Still software rasterizer is in
use and the dri module cannot be loaded.

Cheers.

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-05-02 Thread Michael Nagel
I had a conversation with Philipp Kern recently and he basically shares
our opinion. To get it in the default release we should:

- collect all known/possible regressions (like cp of binary data, some magic
gimp seems to do, ...)
- find someone from the official canonical team to support this

probably a blueprint summing up the reason why this change is needed
together with these two points is the way to go.

[Bug 26394] Re: Web browser button on top panel should open preferred application, rather than firefox/evolution

2009-05-02 Thread Martin Mai
This bug is very old and I don't know if the specification for this - in
my opinion - trivial thing will be approved.

I think if someone installs a new browser and wants to stay with it,
he/she can just remove the icon from the panel, add the right one and
maybe choose to set this new browser as his/her default application (but
that's just my opinion).

In case it helps: I came across the gconf-key
/desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec, which, in my case, contains
the string epiphany. It should be possibly to create a starter on the
panel that factors in this key.

@Jonathan: Actually, I'm pretty sure the ::1 entry in /etc/hosts isn't
something which was changed in Jaunty. It happens to differ based on if
you used Ubiquity or the Debian Installer. Compare to bug #285132. At
least I think so, not sure if I really have done any Ubiquity installs
of Jaunty yet. I happen to

Except that I do agree about your analysis about it being related to
ipv6 and lookups. Just not sure if adding an Allow from ::1 will help.
From what I take it the default Apache2 doesn't listen to ipv6

Re: [Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-05-02 Thread bdoe
Matthew Paul Thomas wrote:
bdoe: If there are security updates waiting in the archive and Update
Manager doesn't open within a day, please report a separate bug about
that. However -- and I apologize in advance if this affects your sleep
-- it has never been true that if there's no icon up there indicating
important security updates, then my system is truly secure. A
vulnerability may be found and exploited by bad guys before being found
by good guys; once it is identified by good guys, it may be hours before
it is fixed in a way that the developers are confident won't break
anything else; after that, Launchpad may take up to an hour to rebuild
the fixed package (depending on the complexity of the package); after
that, there may sometimes be an embargo of hours or days agreed with
other OS vendors; after it is released from embargo, it will be between
0 and 60 minutes before the new package is published in the Ubuntu
archive; and after that, it will be between 0 and 24 hours until your
computer next checks for security updates. This is all true regardless
of whether that last step involves a notification area icon or the
 updates window itself.
I can't file a bug report on something I don't know exists. Like I
stated, I may well have simply closed the window in a fit of
desktop-cleaning, without realizing what the window was. I will probably
never know, because once the window is closed, there is no further
indication that I need to update my system unless I manually invoke
Update Manager or another security update comes along (assuming I don't
once again dismiss the window after it pops up and annoys me). With the
notification icon (aka. old behavior), there is nothing I can do to
dismiss the icon short of updating my system; nor would I have any
reason to dismiss the icon prematurely, since it is completely unobtrusive.

As for your point about my system never being truly secure: I understand
that. I was being facetious. but the FOSS community has generally been
far more responsive to discovering and patching security flaws than
certain monoliths (*cough*Microsoft*cough*) who have gone on record for
leaving major security flaws unaddressed for about nine months or so (

[Bug 314928] Re: [i915GM] MTRR entry gets removed when restarting xorg - causes corruption on ttys

2009-05-02 Thread Norman Yarvin
That error message write error: invalid argument doesn't mean that
there was a syntax error. Instead the kernel is rejecting the command.
In my case it added a line to dmesg explaining the rejection:

mtrr: type mismatch for d000,100 old: write-back new: write-
combining

That was because there was already an overlapping MTRR entry, covering
the first 4GB of address space, describing it as write-back. The
kernel rejects the write-combining MTRR since it overlaps that write-
back range. (There are already a bunch of MTRR entries listing
uncacheable memory ranges in the first 4GB; but that's permissible,
whereas overlap of write-combining and write-back isn't permissible.)
This is on an AMD64 machine with 4GB of memory. I did manage to add a
write-combining MTRR entry, but only by deleting the entry covering the
first 4GB, and replacing it with one 2GB entry and one 1GB entry. This
wouldn't be possible on all motherboards; it just happens that on this
motherboard, there's no usable memory in the fourth GB of address space;
it's all mapped either above or below that.

[Bug 369986] Re: Clamav update takes ownership of the users home directory thus preventing booting into gnome desktop.

2009-05-02 Thread Imre Gergely
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 365823 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365823

It doesn't need to take posession of any critical directory, that's
exactly the problem, and that's why this bug is duplicate of bug
#365823.

When clamav-milter init script is run (/etc/init.d/clamav-milter
start/restart), because of a bug in the script, the current directory
gets chown'd to clamav. So if you run this script as user from your home
directory with sudo, your home directory gets chown'd to clamav. If you
run it as root, the '/' gets chown. If you run in from /etc, /etc gets
chown'd.

I would think one runs the update manager with sudo, that means even if
it runs as root, the current directory may be the user's home directory.
After the package update, the above buggy clamav-milter script gets run
= user's home gets chown'd to clamav.

[Bug 342923] Re: [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

2009-05-02 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I've just tried using EXA accel instead of UXA with the latest PPA
drivers :

- glxgears reports 550-590 FPS with EXA where it would report about 230
FPS with UXA.

- ppracer is smooth and fun with 25-30 FPS with EXA where it would be 3
to 5 FPS with UXA.

- I haven't yet had time to investigate if it has other impacts on
system stability or graphics artifacts, but at least the perf gain is
huge. Not seen any screen flash so far.

- I've noticed a weird scratching and FFFRT ! noise in system
speakers during KDE session start, which I had never noticed before,
afterwards sound seems to work normally.

- My xorg.conf says :

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
VideoRam262144
Option AccelMethod exa
Option EXAOptimizeMigration true
Option MigrationHeuristicgreedy
EndSection

- I'm calling fixmtrr.sh from /etc/rc.local and /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
(not sure if KDM uses it or ignores it)

- my X log says (some possibly interesting parts only) :

[Bug 365823] Re: clamav-milter chowns root/arbitrary directory

2009-05-02 Thread Imre Gergely
As far as I can tell by looking at the process tree, Synaptic gets run with
gksu. When you click on it in the System menu, you need to enter your password,
so it can run as root.
But! it is run by the user, from the user's home directory, and that doesn't
change. You can check this by opening Synaptic, then in a terminal switching to
root, doing a 'ps ax | grep synaptic', looking up the process ID (pid), cd'ing
into /proc/pid, and doing a 'ls -la cwd' (which links to the current working
directory), this should be /home/user.

[Bug 370340] Re: Volume Control Applet always turns USB mic off

2009-05-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * Do you get the same issue in alsamixer for example?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

[Bug 224985] Re: firefox-3.0, not saving history or bookmarks, the navigations buttons (foward, back, etc) does not work

2009-05-02 Thread mhotze
Same problem here, issue fixed by using sudo firefox, as Lee explained.
Firefox came with the message to launch previous session or a new one,
as if it was not closed properly before.
