[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information
Chauncellor: No it is different. If you read carefully my text you'll see that I consider that the notification area should only be populated by docked applications, that is running applications that usually should stay in the background doing their thing but that want to leave some small presence in the panel to allow for quick, and usually simple, interaction with the user. Think of a media player or a clipboard manager. The notifications of update-notifier are just notifications. You don't want to interact with update-notifier. You interact with update-manager. The old behavior of update notifier would add icons to the notification area that do no represent running applications, and that don't have any other purpose than to call other applications, like update-manager or the restart dialog. The proposal I presented says that the place for such queued notifications is the indicator-applet. There is clear and conceptual difference there. -- [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 311451] Re: Please merge hdparm 9.12-2 (main) from Debian unstable
Thanks, Michael. Some remarks: - debian/hdparm.{pre,post}inst changes are cleanup before/in hardy and thus can be dropped - the changed build-depends versions don't seem to serve a real purpose, can we drop them to lower our delta? In particular, depending on debhelper = 7 doesn't make a difference if debian/compat remains at 5. - Homepage: addition can be forwarded to Debian - The udev rules changes should go to Debian; Debian has a current udev as well now, and also uses /lib/udev/rules.d/ now. I know that you aren't responsible for introducing these deltas, but when we merge packages, we should be agressive about sending applicable changes to Debian and drop old cruft, so that the package delta stays meaningful and minimal. [Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations
If this truly is a software bug, our best shot at addressing this bug is via bisection, from lack of specific knowledge. There are enough reports the we consider the ubuntu kernel 2.6.28-9(.31?) good and we know (at least) ubuntu kernel 2.6.28-11.42 is bad. We can rebuild intermediate kernels from [http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-jaunty.git;a=tags]. First, it may be easier to see if we can bisect using the mainline kernels, since they are prebuilt at [http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/]. We get the ubuntu to mainline mapping from [http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/info/kernel-version-map.html]. - ubuntu 2.6.28-9.31 is based on mainline 2.6.28.7 (A) http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.28.7/linux-image-2.6.28-02062807-generic_2.6.28-02062807_amd64.deb - ubuntu 2.6.28-11.42 is based on mainline 2.6.28.9 (Z) http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.28.9/linux-image-2.6.28-02062809-generic_2.6.28-02062809_amd64.deb ** Can at least two people who can reproduce this issue with 2.6.28-11.42, double-check they can/can't reproduce it with kernel Z please? ** We'll know if it's ubuntu patches/configuration, or upstream then. -- 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/346691 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 157308] Re: 7.10: very high memory use on startup by SCIM
This bug happened to me once or twice (I am not sure if they were the same bug). The first time, I was using Ubuntu Intrepid + Xubuntu Desktop. It once crashed for no obvious reasons. After rebooting, Xfce ran emtremely slow. It took about 20 minute to display the desktop, with blanks here and there, totally unusable. I simply formatted the whole partition then, as I didn't want to bother with unknown bugs. The second time, just now, I was using a clean installed Xubuntu Intrepid. Right after I rebooted with Chinese language support (with input methods, basic translations and additional fonts) installed, it became very slow again, but not as slow as the first time it had been. SCIM seemed to eat up all RAM and SWAP space. I took quite some time to undo the install, and the speed restored. There's one thing that might be related. I had been annoyed with the double-SCIM-instance problem. Someone told me that I could modify the first line in /etc/scim/global (which is /SupportedUnicodeLocales = en_US.UTF-8 by default) to use the desired locale so that only one instance of SCIM would be launched. It had worked before, but it could be the culprit here. -- 7.10: very high memory use on startup by SCIM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157308 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 387262] [NEW] pam_env's and localechooser's usage of quotes for /etc/default/locale conflicts
Public bug reported: Hi localechooser writes /etc/default/locale with quotes protecting LANG and LANGUAGE; typically after an install the file contains something like: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 however pam_env expects VAR=VALUE lines, without quotes. This causes LANG to be set literally to en_US.UTF-8 with the quotes; this is of course not a valid locale name. [ I raised this bug to Michael Vogt during UDS as I was seeing this after using language-selector, he fixed language-selector to write LANG=foo instead of LANG=foo, but this only fixes the issue for people who will run language-selector in the future. ] I believe we should change pam_env to strip qutoes, perhaps only for certain env vars; we can also change localechooser to stop using quotes for new installs. I tried to perform an install of Karmic Alpha 2 with the desktop i386 CD and suffered from this bug, and using the boot-time option grub- installer/grub2_instead_of_grub_legacy=false listed in the release notes did not work, unfortunately. I have a dual-boot configuration with Windows 7 RC on my Inspiron 510m laptop. If any users are reading this a) who cannot install via the instructions listed in the Alpha 2 release notes, and b) do not wish to wait until alpha 3, there is a way to get it working: When you login to the live environment, open a terminal and perform the following steps: $ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install ubiquity ubiquity-frontend-gtk ubiquity-ubuntu-artwork This will upgrade the ubiquity installer to the fixed version within your live environment. If there is an update anticipated which will sort out the problem, I would rather wait for the update. I can still connect the laptop to the internet via an Ethernet cable. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information. Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team: 1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture. 2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file dmesg.log to this bug report. 3. Please run the command sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report. [Bug 385832] Re: [i965gm] lower reslutions no longer available on LVDS with 2.7.99 (KMS)
Thank you for the extra information. It seems that KMS changes a few things and it's hard for me to say what are bugs and not. For example, with KMS the EDID information is no longer visible in the output of `xrandr --verbose` (but it is in Xorg.0.log) and the ModeDebug option does not produce as verbose a Xorg.0.log as without KMS. I guess it will take some time for triagers to get used to what is erratic behavior of KMS in the logs and what is normal. I leave this as ready for upstreaming for now. -- [i965gm] lower reslutions no longer available on LVDS with 2.7.99 (KMS) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/385832 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 387262] Re: pam_env's and localechooser's usage of quotes for /etc/default/locale conflicts
** Description changed: Hi localechooser writes /etc/default/locale with quotes protecting LANG and LANGUAGE; typically after an install the file contains something like: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 however pam_env expects VAR=VALUE lines, without quotes. ] - I believe we should change pam_env to strip qutoes, perhaps only for + I believe we should change pam_env to strip quotes, perhaps only for certain env vars; we can also change localechooser to stop using quotes for new installs. Yes, X runs correctly, but when playing a movie, only sound can be heard. [Bug 349569] Fwd: Re: devkit-disks: Allowed ntfs-3g mount options
- Forwarded message from David Zeuthen da...@fubar.dk - Date: Fri, 12 Jun 2009 10:41:05 -0400 From: David Zeuthen da...@fubar.dk To: Martin Pitt martin.p...@ubuntu.com Cc: devkit-de...@lists.freedesktop.org, 349...@bugs.launchpad.net Subject: Re: devkit-disks: Allowed ntfs-3g mount options On Wed, 2009-06-10 at 13:37 +0200, Martin Pitt wrote: Hello devkitters, In https://launchpad.net/bugs/349569 it was noted that devkit-disks does not allow most of the ntfs-3g mount options. So far, ntfs-3g has shipped a hal fdi as a workaround (attached) which allows those, but obviously that doesn't work with dk-disks any more. Is the intention that ./src/devkit-disks-device.c itself gets those new options, hardcoded? It already expects ntfs-3g after all: | /* this is assuming that ntfs-3g is used */ | | static const char *ntfs_defaults[] = {uid=, | gid=, | dmask=0077, | NULL}; | static const char *ntfs_allow[] = {umask=, | dmask=, | fmask=, | NULL}; | If it shouldn't be hardcoded, is there any plan to allow overrides? Personally I think that ntfs-3g has been pretty much the only use case here, so adding them to devkit-disks-device.c would be okay. Hmm, I suppose we can add some more options here but note that there's no UI in GNOME anymore to configure mount options [1] like with what we had with gnome-mount (gnome-mount is deprecated, for the gdu backend of GVfs use gvfs-mount instead). So, yeah, it's not really helping anything adding mount options expect for 'force' (see below). Anyway, I'm not opposed to adding more options if they are not security holes so please send patches if you want this. Incidentally, the only problem (I think) we currently have with ntfs-3g is that the driver sometimes refuses to mount the file system if it was cleanly unmounted. The user experience is really bad; googling for it, it looks like this http://media.photobucket.com/image/ntfs-3g%20could%20not% 20mount/r3bol/ntfs.png We can fix it this way a) check for this error (do a strstr() on $Logfile indicates a clean shutdown for example) when seeing an error when mounting NTFS b) use the GMountOperation to put up a dialog asking if the user wants to use the 'force' option c) remount with the 'force' option David [1] : this is intentional; you shouldn't have to mess around with mount options, we should do the right thing out of the box. [Bug 349569] Re: devkit-disks: Allowed ntfs-3g mount options
Hello David, David Zeuthen [2009-06-12 10:41 -0400]: Hmm, I suppose we can add some more options here but note that there's no UI in GNOME anymore to configure mount options [1] [...] [1] : this is intentional; you shouldn't have to mess around with mount options, we should do the right thing out of the box. If you have special needs (like if you are a hacker) you can always just use /etc/fstab I actually thought that this was just a transition issue and that the mount options just weren't exposed in nautilus yet. If it's intentional, then this is indeed a non-issue. Dropping the mount options from the UI entirely stops people from being able to share their USB hard disk with other users on the system, though. There might be a few other use cases, but this one seems to be the most obvious to me. I don't consider /etc/fstab a real alternative, that feels like a step backwards and isn't possible for non-admin users anyway. But let's see how this goes.. [Bug 197820] Re: No window decorations
I would like to update my last comment. When installing fusion-icon, I lost _all_ configurations inside compiz, no plugins was enabled. I re-enabled quiet a fiew, but it took me some time to find everything. But there is worse: I lost a lot of framerate: everything was very smooth, but now with fusion-icon the cube is not very smooth, Expose has a _very_ low framerate (about 10fps) on a 8600GTS video card. And again, everything was smooth. I don't know what to do, I have all packages related to compiz (excepted those related to kde). -- No window decorations https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197820 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
