Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 404097] [NEW] Tomcat 6 init script spawns 3 Tomcat instances

2009-07-24 Thread László Monda
Public bug reported:

I've recently used Tomcat on Intrepid and Jaunty. On both of them I've
experienced the same problem: There are 3 Tomcat instances spawned by
the tomcat6 init script.

I'm aware that there are efforts to make the Tomcat init scripts more
developer friendly outlined by
http://ubuntuserver.wordpress.com/2008/09/01/tomcat-6-lands-in-intrepid/
for example, but I didn't install the tomcat6-user package so there
should only be one tomcat instance by default.

There is 1 instance owned by the tomcat6 user that does some real work
and 2 other instances owned by root that do nothing.

Doing a little investigation in the tomcat6 init script it seems that
the

$DAEMON -user $TOMCAT6_USER -cp $JSVC_CLASSPATH -outfile SYSLOG
-errfile SYSLOG -pidfile $CATALINA_PID $JAVA_OPTS $BOOTSTRAP_CLASS

command spawns all the instances which is strange to me because I'd
expect a much more sophisticated solution like checking the user home
dirs for tomcat-related configuration information from the init script
and starting the instances accordingly.

I have two questions:

1) Why does the init script behave the way it does?
2) Is it possible to change the default behaviour (using only one instance) or
is it hardcoded?

Thanks!

[Bug 404097] Re: Tomcat 6 init script spawns 3 Tomcat instances

2009-07-24 Thread László Monda
Here is a chat from #tom...@freenode that pretty much explains it:

* nDuff tries to reproduce
nDuff umm
nDuff it's three process table entries, but that's just threads
nDuff it's only one copy of tomcat
nDuff NOTABUG.
nDuff mlaci, if you do a pstree on the lowest PID, you'll see that the other
two are its children.
mlaci nDuff, yeah, that's true, but that doesn't make me understand why
multiple instances are started by default
nDuff mlaci, they _aren't_ multiple instances, that's the point
nDuff mlaci, if you start Apache httpd with a multithreaded MPM, the threads
will show up as separate process table entries...
nDuff mlaci, ...but that doesn't mean there's more than one copy of Apache in
memory.
nDuff mlaci, ...looking more closely, it appears that the first two are part
of jsvc; they're normal and harmless.
nDuff mlaci, ...see the how jsvc works section at
http://commons.apache.org/daemon/jsvc.html
mlaci nDuff, the last url pretty much explains it. so 1) these processes are
all needed to make tomcat work and 2) they don't consume 3 times more memory
than a single tomcat process?
nDuff mlaci, (1) to make tomcat work in such a way that it can be controlled
via jsvc commands, yes; (2) no, absolutely not.

[Bug 380663] Re: open-iscsi initiator tries to resolve ipv6 address of target and fails

2009-07-24 Thread wereHamster
This is not a bug in OpenSolaris, it is a problem in open-iscsi. The
OpenSolaris iscsi implementation sends all IP addresses through which
hosts can connect to it. In my case these are three addresses: IPv4,
IPv6 link local and IPv6 global:

iscsiadm: finished reading text PDU, 48 hdr, 0 ah, 591 data, 1 pad
iscsiadm: TargetName=iqn.1986-03.com.sun:02:xxx
iscsiadm: TargetAddress=192.168.0.80,1
iscsiadm: TargetAddress=[fe80::230:1bff:fe12:3456],1
iscsiadm: TargetAddress=[2001:1234:5678:0:230:1bff:fe12:3456],1

The problem is that the second address, the IPv6 link local one, can
only be used to connect to the host when the application supplies the
'zone index' to the kernel (interface which the kernel should use). This
is a property of IPv6 link local addresses. Open-iscsi doesn't support
this logic yet, but when it encounters such address it skips the whole
target and goes to the next one. This even if there are other addresses
which would work fine.

The attached patch fixes it by not failing when encountering an unknown
target address. When it does it skips the address and tries the next
one. With this patch I can connect to targets on OpenSolaris just fine.

I think this is actually not a bug. I don't think all of samb4 is needed

with samba. So I should be able to uninstall samba4 and just install
samba, smbfs, etc. so that mount -t cifs will work.

Confirm here, on D250 didn't work on UNR out of the box, after
installing the new [459]AR813X it worked smoothly. I wish someone
created a .deb for this driver (well of course kernel support would be
nicer :)

[Bug 337241] Re: I do not want to remove '/'

2009-07-24 Thread Iain
I think the interface is just wrong for what you're trying to do. You
should have separate sections for different actions. Something like the
interface used for SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutsLayout Options
would be ideal. SystemPreferencesKeyboard Shortcuts is alright too,
but I'd like to be able to select an item to see a detailed description
without toggling whether its box is checked.

[Bug 402675] Re: Listen Music Player fails to play MP3 files

2009-07-24 Thread kubuntu-user
Installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly has solved the problem.

But the question remains why Listen requires this package for playing
MP3 while Totem doesn't need it.

(And if really needed, it should be automatically requested for
installation when trying to play an MP3 the first time.)

[Bug 403246] Re: multisearch - please restore old NEWTAB

2009-07-24 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
I thought reasons for disliking this choice should have been very clear
to people who develop free software, as this is not the case, let me see
if I can provide a good explanation.

I consider the blank newtab better than a google custom search, because
I did not ask for a custom search anywhere, the returned results are
worse than the default google ones in many senses (localization, lack of
maps, images, and conversions) and it seems that my new ubuntu is trying
to force me to use the custom search.

I would prefer a less invasive system. I do not even know if my requests
are received and eventually stored by ubuntu. I am already concerned
with my privacy when I search using google. Having an even smaller, and
closer to me entity see my searches is making the situation worse and is
worrying me about why ubuntu is actually trying to force me to use the
custom search.

I may be judged paranoid, but the fact that I did not receive any reply
when I asked about reasons for the custom google search (months ago) on
the ubuntu-devel mailing list certainly worries me more.

I think the above is short and clear enough, even if the question was
probably not directed to me. I raised the issue again on the same
mailing list.

Binary package hint: pidgin

Pidgin provides a way to change icq passwd (accounts - icq - change

to login to icq).

[Bug 403910] [NEW] Ubuntu Karmic alpha 3 : eeepc hotlkeys - problem with the wireless function touch

2009-07-24 Thread Testing Tigerwolf
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I have just download the ubuntu karmic alpha 3 and I install it on a Eeepc
1000H.
I was agreably suprised because the hotkeys seems to function, particularly the
wifi hotkey (Fcn + F2).
In fact, when I push this hotkey when the wifi network is switch off, the wifi
seems to switch on.
But after that, if I push the hotkey another time (in order to switch off from
on), a black screen appears, the mouse freezes and nothing else...

I can't give you extra information about this functionning because when
the black screen appears I only have one alternative : to push on the
power button during several seconds...

Thank you for considerating my problem.

Hardware configuration : Asus Eeepc 1000 H
Software configuration : Ubuntu Karmic alpha 3
Kernel version : 2.6.31-3.19

[Bug 403911] [NEW] bluez-simple-agent missing

2009-07-24 Thread domen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez

What else is there to say?

Relevant to at least Intrepid and Jaunty, possibly many more.

bluez-simple-agent is 3 kB in size, and a very important tool for
binding (inserting PIN), when not using bluez-gnome (maybe one is
limited to console only), or when bluez-gnome decides to use a random
PIN (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez-gnome/+bug/284994)

It's a part of bluez package, so... was there a GOOD reason to drop it
in the first place?

[Bug 229169] Re: ntp support appears not to be installed after installing through Time Date settings

2009-07-24 Thread nimbosa
has the openNTPD implementation of NTP daemon been considered?

i think the Ubuntu teams working on this should resolve it quickly,
Debian-compatible distros have implemented this properly

ntpd should be functional out of the box, though time and date settings
could be set to Manual by default, since internet connection is NOT
assumed and ntpd should sleep when network manager sees no internet
connection

[Bug 403912] [NEW] gedit spell checker ignores dot after an abbreviation

2009-07-24 Thread VitaminR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I use gedit 2.24.2.

The use of the spell checker works fine in general, but if an
abbreviation comes along, it ignores the dot belonging to it and
recommends the abbr. with a dot. This causes two dots instead of
one.

e.g. (attention: its a german abbr.)

Dr. is already correct, but spell checker claims it incorrect because it only
recognises Dr
Then it recommends Dr.
If you accept it, it results in Dr..

Maybe OT: Did I miss understood the option from dpkg '-R' resp. '--

load/install it (liblircclient0) automatically. Or can this be used only
for different package (names) and not for versions?

Thanks,
