[Bug 382703] Re: Home Folder has 3 different names
Just reading some of the comments (including johnk above) I think some people are confused over what is being discussed. the convention /home/username (ie username= johns therefore home = /home/johns) isnt going anywhere. this will always be the case as every username on a Linux system must be unique therefore every folder is unique. This is the same for Windows and Mac This is just to discuss how it is refereed to in the Places menu or other locations, just the name of the Launcher effectively. Personally I think it should be a standard name such as Home. I can understand the multi-language problems but am wondering if completely different words can be used (not just a direct translations of the word Home). Sorry I don't speak any other languages so cant provide any examples, the philistine that I am. 8) The main reason I +1 to Home is support. telling someone (over the phone etc) to go to their home folder, if the home folder is called JohnS etc will confuse some people. Ive come across this when supporting Windows users when the environment was changed that every My Computer Icon was renamed to the hostname of the computer. This meant a lot of users just didn't even know where they were going and asking them to go to My Computer meant they couldn't find it. Some users were fine with it but it caused a lot of problems. really the Home Folder should be the same place relative to any user that uses an Ubuntu PC. Just like in the terminal any user can type cd ~ and they are taken Home. Although it is a different folder name (/home/username etc) obviously for every user, the user should never have to think that it is a different folder. There are some other advantages as well. Although not a common operation you might want to use a copy of a home folder generated under UserA for UserB (similar to editing the /etc/skel folder). although this can be worked around by other means (as a lot of things can in Linux) there is a chance that the username references, UserA, will remain in the now UserB profile complicating the process. anyway +1 for Home -- Home Folder has 3 different names https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382703 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

AND A BREAKTHROUGH It turns out when I installed a later kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ the issue went away. I can't keep using this kernel because I can't install make which is required for compiling virtualbox. Make requires the latest kernel build in the jaunty repositories. uname -a: Linux panther 2.6.31-020631rc5-generic #020631rc5 SMP Sat Aug 1 09:04:48 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux I 'could' wait until 9.10 for the fix considering it's only ~3mo away but I'd prefer fixing the issue now. [Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings
I feel reasonably certain that i have not encountered this bug until yesterday, when several installs resulted the same way: switching to standard mode from netbook, and upon reboot, I lose both top and bottom panels and can only right click on the desktop. As such, I cannot even open a console, let alone get to a menu. The problem is consistent: at one install I switched desktop mode *before* installing any updates, and another time, I did the switch after the most recent updates [06 AUG 09] were received from the channel and installed. ... hence my QUESTION: how soon may one reasonably expect a fix to be in the updates channel? I only intend to run Jaunty on my Asus EEE 1000 PC, but not Karmic or any unstable / development code. [Bug 334144] Re: [Intrepid AMD64] lirc daemon fails to load at startup
I had the same problem in Jaunty, but i solved it. I think that it isn`t a bug. It is caused by a wrong installation. [Bug 374900] License clarification of faac
Hi, It has been suggested to me that I should contact you and ask for clarification for the license of faac. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm both and Debian and Ubuntu Developer and maintain several multimedia related packages in the Debian pkg-multimedia team. It has come to my attention that ffmpeg and x264 developers claim that faac cannot be redistributed under the LGPL. According to my investigations, this claim arises from using the following files: - libfaac/bitstream.c - libfaac/tns.c - libfaac/tns.h All contain the following copyright notice: This software module was originally developed by and edited by Texas Instruments in the course of development of the MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio standard ISO/IEC 13818-7, 14496-1,2 and 3. This software module is an implementation of a part of one or more MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio tools as specified by the MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio standard. ISO/IEC gives users of the MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio standards free license to this software module or modifications thereof for use in hardware or software products claiming conformance to the MPEG-2 NBC/ MPEG-4 Audio standards. Those intending to use this software module in hardware or software products are advised that this use may infringe existing patents. The original developer of this software module and his/her company, the subsequent editors and their companies, and ISO/IEC have no liability for use of this software module or modifications thereof in an implementation. Copyright is not released for non MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio conforming products. The original developer retains full right to use the code for his/her own purpose, assign or donate the code to a third party and to inhibit third party from using the code for non MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio conforming products. This copyright notice must be included in all copies or derivative works. Copyright (c) 1997. This issue is tracked publicly in the ubuntu bug tracking system at https://launchpad.net/bugs/374900 I strongly suspect that this is not intended and there might either be a misunderstanding or can be fixed otherwise easily. Could you please state us you your opinion on the matter and advice us how to proceed with the ubuntu package in ubuntu? If you don't mind, I'd like to copy your answer to the bug referenced above. John Vivirito, I am not sure what do you mean. After an (automatic) update I did not see any notification even if there is one in /var/log/apt/term.log, quitting Firefox did not work (at least by using the menu item) so it had to be killed. I can also confirm this bug. I have a 12x12 Wacom ArtZ II tablet connected to a serial port. The lag is extreme - around about a third of a second. So does crossing the proximity threshold. I have an almost fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 on a crummy old 1.5GHz Althon thingy. [Bug 410173] [NEW] kde font sizes too large by default then inconsistent when reduced
Public bug reported: I've just installed kubuntu 9.04. As soon as I logged in the default fonts looked like KDE was shouting at me. These are basically all Deja Sans 9. So, I reduced them all to size 6. That look pretty good in the Font settings dialog. But, then the font sizes are all wrong in just about every thing. - the menubar is large, while the window heading is small - the favourites list is almost unreadable - Konqueror ignores the settings inside the browser window and continues to shout (ctrl-- helps here, but that's just not the right thing to do). In comparison, Gnome installed with everything looking sensible. Is this a known issue in KDE or am I missing something? [Bug 365997] Re: wacom stylus slow sluggish unusable
f you wave the mouse pointer furiously, the lag gets up to at least 0.5s when mouse pointer slows down to a crawl when the playback gets to the end of the buffer of recorded stylus events. Neither the trajectory or the velocity of the stylus faithfully reproduced. Also, you wiggle the stylus around and then lift the stylus and a few seconds later, put it down somewhere else, the input that was recorded before the stylus was lifted will be played (in the original location) once the stylus is put down again. The input smoothing is especially atrocious. Tracing out a square on the tablet causes the mouse point to trace out a wildly distorted pin cushion. Tracing out a square but pausing for 0.3s at the corners causes the mouse pointer to trace a proper square slowly but with no pauses. It acts like a really poor attempt at input conditioning has got into the works. Attached is the xorg.conf file I'm using at the moment. (It does not help the awful 0.3s stylus motion lag with my ArtZ II tablet.) My system is running Ubuntu 9.04 with the 2.6.28-14-generic kernel. ** Attachment added: My current xorg.conf http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29994062/xorg.conf -- wacom stylus slow sluggish unusable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365997 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
