[Bug 410328] [NEW] ec2-api-tools commands require JAVA_HOME to be set

2009-08-07 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

ec2 commands require that you set JAVA_HOME to find java.
Instead this just invoke 'java' from the path.
example:
$ ec2-describe-images -o self -o amazon
/usr/bin/ec2-cmd: line 17: JAVA_HOME: JAVA_HOME is not set

The issue is in /usr/bin/ec2-cmd, where its final lines do:

CMD=$1
shift
$JAVA_HOME/bin/java $EC2_JVM_ARGS $cygprop -classpath $CP
com.amazon.aes.webservices.client.cmd.$CMD $@

@chuck I installed the apache version of your ppa :

[Bug 315507] Re: Unable to remove Suhosin patch

2009-08-07 Thread shaberer
Hi,
I am suffering the same odbc issue as mentioned in #16 (also on amd64), but can
live with it, as this is my private machine.

My real problem (as mentioned in #18) is that while I have set
suhosin.simulation = on, suhosin not only logs the issue but also
seems to abort it, so the browser offers an empty file for download.

Is the simulation-mode function broken or am I doing something wrong?

[Bug 405158] Re: Intel WiFi Link 5100 (iwlagn) power management regression in 2.6.31

2009-08-07 Thread Matthew Lai
Installing the package fixes it indeed. I suppose it was just broken for
a second when the repository was updating to 2.6.31-5.

BTW, since it's in backports, does it mean the fix will eventually be
merged into mainline? And where is it backported from? I thought the
karmic kernel is already the newest.

[Bug 382703] Re: Home Folder has 3 different names

2009-08-07 Thread Alex Bruce
Just reading some of the comments (including johnk above) I think some
people are confused over what is being discussed.

the convention /home/username (ie username= johns therefore home =
/home/johns) isnt going anywhere. this will always be the case as every
username on a Linux system must be unique therefore every folder is
unique. This is the same for Windows and Mac

This is just to discuss how it is refereed to in the Places menu or
other locations, just the name of the Launcher effectively.

Personally I think it should be a standard name such as Home. I can
understand the multi-language problems but am wondering if completely
different words can be used (not just a direct translations of the word
Home). Sorry I don't speak any other languages so cant provide any
examples, the philistine that I am. 8)

The main reason I +1 to Home is support. telling someone (over the
phone etc) to go to their home folder, if the home folder is called
JohnS etc will confuse some people.

Ive come across this when supporting Windows users when the environment
was changed that every My Computer Icon was renamed to the hostname of
the computer. This meant a lot of users just didn't even know where they
were going and asking them to go to My Computer meant they couldn't
find it. Some users were fine with it but it caused a lot of problems.

really the Home Folder should be the same place relative to any user
that uses an Ubuntu PC. Just like in the terminal any user can type cd
~ and they are taken Home. Although it is a different folder name
(/home/username etc) obviously for every user, the user should never
have to think that it is a different folder.

There are some other advantages as well. Although not a common operation
you might want to use a copy of a home folder generated under UserA for
UserB (similar to editing the /etc/skel folder). although this can be
worked around by other means (as a lot of things can in Linux) there is
a chance that the username references, UserA, will remain in the now
UserB profile complicating the process.

anyway +1 for Home

[Bug 396032] Re: System crashes on shutdown

2009-08-07 Thread Michael Lustfield
AND A BREAKTHROUGH

It turns out when I installed a later kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ the issue went away. I can't keep
using this kernel because I can't install make which is required for
compiling virtualbox. Make requires the latest kernel build in the
jaunty repositories.

uname -a: Linux panther 2.6.31-020631rc5-generic #020631rc5 SMP Sat Aug
1 09:04:48 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I 'could' wait until 9.10 for the fix considering it's only ~3mo away
but I'd prefer fixing the issue now. I'm marking this bug confirmed
because I've verified the issue and the fix, unfortunately the fix will
need to be removed because virtualbox is vital to me for the next year
and a half.

[Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings

2009-08-07 Thread Elton Woo
I feel reasonably certain that i have not encountered this bug until
yesterday, when several installs resulted the same way: switching to
standard mode from netbook, and upon reboot, I lose both top and bottom
panels and can only right click on the desktop. As such, I cannot even
open a console, let alone get to a menu.

The problem is consistent: at one install I switched desktop mode
*before* installing any updates, and another time, I did the switch
after the most recent updates [06 AUG 09] were received from the channel
and installed.

... hence my QUESTION:
how soon may one reasonably expect a fix to be in the updates channel?

I only intend to run Jaunty on my Asus EEE 1000 PC, but not Karmic or
any unstable / development code. I would really like to switch to the
desktop mode, but am willing to wait until a fix is out ... if it's not
too long a wait...

[Bug 410156] [NEW] MD5 hash support broken.

2009-08-07 Thread Nigel Cunningham
Public bug reported:

pam-mysql fails to build with MD5 hash support for a couple of reasons:
1) The Debian patch that is included forces openssl support (-D HAVE_OPENSSL
IIRC).
2) The sasl_v2 check fails because sasl v2 defines the symbol sasl_client_init,
not sasl_v2_client_init. The major number should probably be checked instead.
I have installed the current Karmic source, run configure like normal and
manually edited config.h to enable HAVE_CYRUS_SASL_V2. I was then able to build
a pam_mysql library with md5 hash support.
(Usage case is implementing Postfix SMTP POP authentication against Drupal 6
tables).

[Bug 334144] Re: [Intrepid AMD64] lirc daemon fails to load at startup

2009-08-07 Thread Ghost Rider
I had the same problem in Jaunty, but i solved it.
I think that it isn`t a bug. It is caused by a wrong installation.

If you edit the hardware.conf and the lircd.conf manually you have to
uninstall the inputlirc package. If you have installed this packed, the
lirc-daemon is loaded twice at startup and you have to restart it before
it works.

Hope this helps.

possibly ffmpeg changed the commandline interface in this point. In that
case kino would need to follow that change.

Could you tell me more about what to do with this option? What was it's
usage? I didn't find anything in the mplex or ffmpeg manpage.
Should I simply omit this option in the call from Kino or replace it
 with a newer call?

I haven't even used neither kino nor this, so I cannot comment on that.

I'd say best to ask people that have experience with kino.

[Bug 374900] License clarification of faac

2009-08-07 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Hi,

It has been suggested to me that I should contact you and ask for
clarification for the license of faac. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm
both and Debian and Ubuntu Developer and maintain several multimedia
related packages in the Debian pkg-multimedia team.

It has come to my attention that ffmpeg and x264 developers claim that faac
cannot be redistributed under the LGPL. According to my investigations,
this claim arises from using the following files:

 - libfaac/bitstream.c
 - libfaac/tns.c
 - libfaac/tns.h

All contain the following copyright notice:

This software module was originally developed by
and edited by Texas Instruments in the course of
development of the MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio standard
ISO/IEC 13818-7, 14496-1,2 and 3. This software module is an
implementation of a part of one or more MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio tools
as specified by the MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio standard. ISO/IEC gives
users of the MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio standards free license to this
software module or modifications thereof for use in hardware or
software products claiming conformance to the MPEG-2 NBC/ MPEG-4 Audio
standards. Those intending to use this software module in hardware or
software products are advised that this use may infringe existing
patents. The original developer of this software module and his/her
company, the subsequent editors and their companies, and ISO/IEC have
no liability for use of this software module or modifications thereof
in an implementation. Copyright is not released for non MPEG-2
NBC/MPEG-4 Audio conforming products. The original developer retains
full right to use the code for his/her own purpose, assign or donate
the code to a third party and to inhibit third party from using the
code for non MPEG-2 NBC/MPEG-4 Audio conforming products. This
copyright notice must be included in all copies or derivative works.

Copyright (c) 1997.

This issue is tracked publicly in the ubuntu bug tracking system at
https://launchpad.net/bugs/374900

I strongly suspect that this is not intended and there might either be a
misunderstanding or can be fixed otherwise easily.

Could you please state us you your opinion on the matter and advice us
how to proceed with the ubuntu package in ubuntu? If you don't mind, I'd
like to copy your answer to the bug referenced above.

Thanks for releasing faac under LGPL and thanks in advance for
considering this issue!

[Bug 252548] Re: Firefox 3.0.1 opens a small empty window instead of what it should

2009-08-07 Thread Jarno Suni
John Vivirito, I am not sure what do you mean. After an (automatic)
update I did not see any notification even if there is one in
/var/log/apt/term.log, quitting Firefox did not work (at least by using
the menu item) so it had to be killed. Killing and restarting firefox
was a workaround.

Actually I reproduced the bug just in conjunction with an automatic
update to Firefox 3.5.2 from jaunty-updates.

Bug 274468 may not be the same but fixing it prevents this from
happening.

the bug is really annoying especially for large shops where peple
regularly login to different boxes.

it also affects svn repositories, if they are update on different
machines they go stale on the boxes where it was not updated.

[Bug 365997] Re: wacom stylus slow sluggish unusable

2009-08-07 Thread Blancmange
I can also confirm this bug. I have a 12x12 Wacom ArtZ II tablet
connected to a serial port. The lag is extreme - around about a third of
a second. (Whether or not my USB mouse is connected makes no
difference.) As AISmithee says, the eraser moves fine and pressing the
tip or a stylus button momentarily eliminates the lag. So does crossing
the proximity threshold.

I have an almost fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 on a crummy old 1.5GHz
Althon thingy. (The motion on Ubuntu 8.04 was fine except for the way it
often slew to the corners or edges of the screen and generated hard
clicks.)

(I've added a dummy xorg.0.conf in case a rogue robot is stymieing this
bug report. No such existed in my almost-fresh Ubuntu 9.04 install.)

[Bug 410173] [NEW] kde font sizes too large by default then inconsistent when reduced

2009-08-07 Thread Russell Robinson
Public bug reported:

I've just installed kubuntu 9.04.

As soon as I logged in the default fonts looked like KDE was shouting at
me.

These are basically all Deja Sans 9.

So, I reduced them all to size 6. That look pretty good in the Font
settings dialog.

But, then the font sizes are all wrong in just about every thing.

- the menubar is large, while the window heading is small
- the favourites list is almost unreadable
- Konqueror ignores the settings inside the browser window and continues to
shout (ctrl-- helps here, but that's just not the right thing to do).

In comparison, Gnome installed with everything looking sensible.

Is this a known issue in KDE or am I missing something?

and scroll lock lights started blinking and the machine was otherwise
hung. I don't recall seeing this with previous kernel versions although
of course it might only happen occasionally.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly.

2009-08-07 Thread Colin Watson
By the way, this doesn't happen every time; a few subsequent resumes
have been fine.

[Bug 226819] Re: Find does not find for me. Gives 0 results for all searches.

2009-08-07 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Here's a test case showing the bug. Search for test. You'll get the
result in the main text, but not the result in the section heading.
Acrobat Reader finds both.

Thanks.

I would change the importance from low to show stopper because it is
impossible to use Ekiga with large number of VoIP providers.

Is this bug a duplicate of bug 367822?
Doubtful, the hardware is quite different.

I am having the same problem using Transmission or downloading a file
from firefox. I think this has been happening for a while, but it is
only recently that I realised what it was.

[Bug 410058] Re: Black screen with radeon KMS

2009-08-07 Thread Alexander Hunziker
No cryptsetup. I have the usplash resolution set to the native
resolution of my screen (SXGA+, 1440x1050) in /etc/usplash.conf. I'm not
sure if it was I who set this or some installation routine... I'll try
removing that file and see what happens. As to the SSH, I'll try that at
home, cannot do it here.

[Bug 365997] Re: wacom stylus slow sluggish unusable

2009-08-07 Thread Blancmange
f you wave the mouse pointer furiously, the lag gets up to at least 0.5s
when mouse pointer slows down to a crawl when the playback gets to the
end of the buffer of recorded stylus events. Neither the trajectory or
the velocity of the stylus faithfully reproduced.

Also, you wiggle the stylus around and then lift the stylus and a few
seconds later, put it down somewhere else, the input that was recorded
before the stylus was lifted will be played (in the original location)
once the stylus is put down again.

The input smoothing is especially atrocious. Tracing out a square on
the tablet causes the mouse point to trace out a wildly distorted pin
cushion. Tracing out a square but pausing for 0.3s at the corners causes
the mouse pointer to trace a proper square slowly but with no pauses. It
acts like a really poor attempt at input conditioning has got into the
works.

Attached is the xorg.conf file I'm using at the moment. (It does not
help the awful 0.3s stylus motion lag with my ArtZ II tablet.)

My system is running Ubuntu 9.04 with the 2.6.28-14-generic kernel.
