vtun has broken encryption support that makes it unsuitable for main (and for a secure multi-cluster support), see MIR review in bug 412059. The workaround proposal for karmic is to ship a working but unsupported multi-cluster mode, by suggesting vtun usage in eucalyptus and leaving it in universe. There is no time left to migrate from using vtun to openvpn for proper layer-2 encrypted tunneling. What if it's already registered to another cloud controller, though? Would --register-walrus local-ip forcibly re-register with a local cloud? We wouldn't want that, I think. We'd want some way to distinguish failed to register because already registered from failed to register because something went wrong. Re: [Bug 429169] [NEW] ec2: Include kernel modules in AMIs
Some other options have been discussed like building kernel modules into the kernel or copying them from initrd into /lib/modules at boot time, but the easiest approach to get things working in the short term is probably just to follow the existing de facto standard and include the kernel modules for the AMI's default kernel. If somebody wants to run I know that Eric doesn't really want to hear this, but I'll at least point it out. Having the modules already installed for the xen kernel is less than ideal for the uec images. The current installation of slapd doesn't allow for searches in the empty
base (dn=) and the schema entries. These are needed by several client tools
to, among other things:
- check what the server schema is (luma, apache directory studio)

Having the modules already installed for the xen kernel is less than ideal for the uec images. Less than ideal, perhaps, but certainly worth the tradeoff in my opinion. The only cost should be in storage space, and there presumably aren't very many modules for the EC2 kernel. there presumably aren't very many modules for the EC2 kernel. I guess this raises the questions of what modules we are talking about, and this is an area where I wouldn't know what to cut out. These values are ok if you are using the certificate bundle on the frontend machine, but not if you transfer it to a client machine.
