I think this is more a question of documentation. At this point by
default the system is installed with everything registered to the public
IP address. You *need* to edit /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-ipaddr.conf

[Bug 460085] Re: memory leak; rampart_context not freed (memory leaked per connection)

2009-10-26 Thread Thierry Carrez
About other rampart configurations, we added rampart for eucalyptus so
if the patch is needed to work properly with the way eucalyptus uses
rampart, I'd say it takes precedence over other unknown ways that may
rely on the buggy behavior.

But knowing *why* this was commented out would certainly help in the
discussion.

[Bug 458001] Re: Changing LOGLEVEL in eucalyptus.conf doesn't affect log verbosity

2009-10-26 Thread Thierry Carrez
I spent some time looking at the code:
1/ LOGLEVEL currently affects nc.log and cc.log correctly
2/ Adding -l $LOGLEVEL to eucalyptus-cloud opts (in /etc/init/eucalyptus.conf
) fixes verbosity for cloud-output.log
3/ cloud-debug.log and cloud-error.log are unaffected by this. Their verbosity
is hardcoded in clc/modules/core/src/main/resources/log4j.xml.

I think we should fix (2) in an update and document what really is
affected by LOGLEVEL in eucalyptus.conf

[Bug 418342] Re: akonadi-server prevents install of mysql-server-5.0

2009-10-26 Thread Harald Sitter
Reverted change.

Apparently stuff linked against the 5.1 client lib can not work with a
5.0 server, leading to akonadi crashes as described in another bug
report. As I see it the only solution to this would be making the 5.0
and 5.1 servers installable at the same time. There is certainly nothing
the akonadi part of things can do about this.

So, if you feel like it, report an appropriate wish against MySQL, but
akonadi can, unfortunately, not doing anything here :|

[Bug 460271] [NEW] virt-aa-helper fails when serial or console type is 'tcp'

2009-10-26 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When serial and console devices are defined as follows:
...
serial type='tcp'
  source mode='bind' host='127.0.0.1' service='1234'/
  protocol type='telnet'/
  target port='0'/
/serial
console type='tcp'
  source mode='bind' host='127.0.0.1' service='1234'/
  protocol type='telnet'/
  target port='0'/
/console
...
virt-aa-helper will incorrectly add 127.0.0.1 to the included files list,
which causes apparmor_parser to fail and that causes the guest to not start
unless apparmor is disabled for libvirtd. Simple check if the serial or console
type is 'tcp' in virt-aa-helper's get_files() function should fix it.

This broke in 0.7.0-1ubuntu8 (which is when virt-aa-helper was changed
to use the XML for the file paths) and is still broken as of
0.7.0-1ubuntu13.

[Bug 455625] Re: Eucalyptus Loses Public IP Address

2009-10-26 Thread Joseph Salisbury
One other thing to note. The following is the output of euca-describe-
instances from this morning. Before the issue was reproduced:

$ euca-describe-instances

ubuntucluster1  eki-405016BEeri-23A51639

The 14th column(2009-10-19T20:23:53.744Z) seems like an instance start
date of some sort. This date changes to a 1970 date after the issue is
reproduced(1970-01-01T00:00:00.813Z):

[Bug 455625] Re: Eucalyptus Loses Public IP Address

2009-10-26 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Looks like I just reproduced it after seven days:

$ euca-describe-instances
RESERVATION r-39C7074C  admin   default
INSTANCEi-46910829  emi-230B11AE172.19.1.2  172.19.1.2
running  mykey   0   c1.medium   1970-01-01T00:00:00.813Z
ubuntucluster1  eki-405016BEeri-23A51639

This may or may not be related, but I did an apt-get dist-upgrade this morning.
 I'll restart my instance again, and re-run the apt-get dist-upgrade and see if
this is what triggers it.

[Bug 378639] Re: firstlogin script can't be executed because the permission of /root directory is 0700 in the virtual machine created by python-vm-builder

2009-10-26 Thread Chris McNabb
Sorry that I missed the previous emails. The patch was originally for
whichever version was released at the time I posted three months ago. I
don't recall what that was and the automatic updates are running on my
server so I cannot check there.

With only about 5 minutes checking though, I was able to find that
nothing has changed with the two affected files in release 0.10-0ubuntu2
and I was able to successfully apply the patch to that version.

[Bug 461156] [NEW] User data is not base64 decoded before being presented to the instance

2009-10-26 Thread Markus Lindenberg
Public bug reported:

User data supplied using euca-run-instances --user-data-file is not decoded
before being presented to the instance.
Inside the instance, curl http://169.254.169.254/latest/user-data; should
fetch the decoded user data, whereas eucalyptus will return a base64 and url
encoded string. This breaks ec2-run-user-data from the ec2-init package,
rendering instance configuration using the user-data mechanism unusable.

EC2 documentation at
http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2007-03-01/DeveloperGuide/AESDG-chapter-instancedata.html
 states that EC2 will return decoded data (i don't have a ec2 account so i
can't confirm this):
The user data must be base64-encoded before being submitted to the API. The
API command-line tools perform the base64-encoding for you. The data will be
base64 decoded before being presented to the instance.

[Bug 236510] [NEW] default apparmor setting prevents bind from running under chroot

2009-10-26 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: apparmor

Easily reproducible.

1) Fresh minimal install of LTS 8.04 Hardy
2) Install bind9, verify that permissions ARE correct
3) Create the chroot (scroll down to DNS Server section of
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu8.04-lts-p4 to copy/paste this
setup easily )
3) Edit /etc/default/bind9 changing this line to this:
OPTIONS=-u bind -t /var/lib/named
4) Try to start bind. It will complain thusly to syslog:

none:0: open: /etc/bind/named.conf: permission denied
loading configuration: permission denied
exiting (due to fatal error)

To make bind work:
/etc/init.d/apparmor stop
/etc/init.d/bind9 start

To make it fail:
/etc/init.d/apparmor stop
/etc/init.d/bind9 restart

Unable to find sufficient documentation on apparmor to discover a
workaround, that would be satisfactory as well though the next point
release should make this behavior a default; for many years and for many
reasons most servers have run bind in a chroot jail.

[Bug 236510] Re: default apparmor setting prevents bind from running under chroot

2009-10-26 Thread Jamie Strandboge
The apparmor profile contains bind9 in a similar way that the
traditional chrooting does. There is no reason to chroot bind9 on Ubuntu
if you are using the AppArmor profile. The reason why the profile was
developed was so that all bind9 users would benefit from the enhanced
security of running bind9 under confinement, and not require users to
have to diverge from the standard installation and use chroot.

Users are welcome to use traditional chrooting if they prefer, and need only
disable the apparmor profile by performing:
$ sudo apparmor_parser -R /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.named
$ ln -s /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.named /etc/apparmor.d/disable/usr.sbin.named

The first unloads the profile from the kernel, and the second disables
the profile on boot.

[Bug 461195] [NEW] Allow mysql versions 5.0 and 5.1 to be installed at the same time

2009-10-26 Thread Russ Brown
Public bug reported:

This follows on from bug 418342.

Currently, it is impossible to use MySQL 5.0 when running kde in Karmic.
This is because akonadi-server requires mysql-server-core-5.1, which
conflicts with mysql-server-core-5.0 (and subsequently mysql-
server-5.1).

As advised from bug 418342, simply allowing akonadi-server to depend on
mysql-server-core does not work, as binaries linked to the 5.1 libraries
do not work when the 5.0 libraries are installed. The only recommended
solution is to allow both to be installed at the same time.

In addition, this would seem to be a desirable goal anyway. For example,
it would be entirely reasonable for a developer to want to test against
both versions of the server locally.

But the akonadi/mysql-5.0 conflict will I suspect be something of a
showstopper for many developers.

[Bug 461156] Re: User data is not base64 decoded before being presented to the instance

2009-10-26 Thread Scott Moser
I believe I've verified that using euca-run-instances base64 encodes data 2
times rather than once.
For example, with euca2ools configured to run against ec2, I do:

$ euca-run-instances --user-data hello world --key ec2-keypair ami-ef00e386
$ ssh ${ec2_host} 'wget -q http://169.254.169.254/latest/user-data -O -'; echo
aGVsbG8gd29ybGQ=
$ ssh $ec2_host 'wget -q http://169.254.169.254/latest/user-data -O -' |
   base64 -d; echo
hello world

This is true for both '--user-data' and '--user-data-file'.

According to cloud-debug.log there is a FileNotFoundException for

[Bug 461156] Re: User data is not base64 decoded before being presented to the instance

2009-10-26 Thread Scott Moser
A  bit more data...
I'm fairly sure that the correct thing to do here is just to remove the
following two lines from main() in euca-run-instances:
|if user_data:
|user_data = base64.urlsafe_b64encode(user_data)

Also 'import base64' on line 37 could then be removed as this is the
only place base64 is used.

The reason we dont need this encoding is that boto is doing it for us.

In euca-run-instances, the following are the lines that matter:

| if user_data:
| user_data = base64.urlsafe_b64encode(user_data)
| euca_conn = euca.make_connection()
| try:
| reservation = euca_conn.run_instances(image_id = image_id,
|   min_count = min_count,
|   max_count = max_count,
|   key_name = keyname,
|   security_groups = group_names,
|   user_data = user_data,
...

euca.make_connection in euca2ools/euca2ools/__init__.py returns a connection
that is created with:
   return boto.connect_ec2()

Then, we call euca_conn.run_instances.  run_instances in boto/ec2/connection.py
does:
|  if user_data:
| params['UserData'] = base64.b64encode(user_data)

So, the user data is getting encoded twice.
