[Bug 498734] [NEW] nmbd stops randomly - cannot access using hostname from Windows XP

2009-12-20 Thread Csimbi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I found a number of reports about nmbd not starting.
For me nmbd does start, but stops randomly, so while this is a different bug,
it must be somehow related.

But, first things first.
I am new to Linux. I followed various tutorial on the net to install a NAS
using Ubuntu Server. I installed it, was working for a while, then it stopped
working, I reinstalled it, and this cycle was going on and on and on like 10
times.
Then, I decided to call in a favour from a friend who has experience.
I installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 again (amd64), updated the system using apt-get
(that was yesterday, 19-Dec-2009), configured Samba again the way I used to,
and I called my friend to take a look. He used ssh to access the machine, and
do his magic. He fine-tuned Samba with the users and permissions I wanted, then
he said we should also reboot the system to make sure that everything mounts
and loads as it should - so, we rebooted the the system. After reboot, I could
access my Samba share just fine. So, we opened a drink to celebrate. About five
minutes later, I went back to the machine to map the drives, but I could not
access the Samba share using the netbios name from Windows XP - I could access
it using the IP address though.
We had no idea what was going on and we've been Google-ing around for hours,
trying various configuration changes in network setting as recommended by
various messages claiming that it solved their problem. Well, none of those
network tweaks have helped us, so I gave up. My friend was pissed because it
was supposed to work so he kept checking things I know nothing about. Then he
said: f**k, nmbd is not running! He restarted Samba (and with it nmbd) and
everything was working again. After a while, it stopped again. He tried
restarting Samba again, but this time it did not work. He said we should start
from boot and he will watch it and see when it stops and why. So, we reboot and
he keeps his eyes open. He said there are some read errors in
/var/log/samba/log.nmbd for the socket. The is what he sent me:
read_socket_with_timeout: read error = Socket operation on non-socket.
read from child failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
I Googled about this and I ended up here, sounds like it to me (who don't know
much about Linux):
http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/1998-March/006767.html
My friend ended up on this forum, here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462169
Though that error talks about nmbd not starting. For us, nmbd does start (he
found traces and I can also access the Samna share using the netbios host
name), but it stops at some point which we could not track down.
Thank you for fixing.

relevant (but hardware seems otherwise to be stable).

BTW, in case there are questions, I will be away from tomorrow till end

[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2009-12-20 Thread Paul Smith
Is anyone ever going to do anything about this? I know it's not an easy
problem but there are solutions here which will help at least some of
the people and which are not harmful (for example, not updating
/etc/resolv.conf on RENEW if the old nameserver is still present).

If we could do at least that, then we'd solve this problem for a lot of
people with little effort and no deleterious effects.

Please??

[Bug 465665] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-12-20 Thread TonyC
I just got the same error. The only difference is that I was not using tasksel,
but had just typed the following command:
 sudo apt-get install lamp-server^
Seems very likely that this is the same error though. In response to the disk
space question above, I have almost 100gigs of free space, and I have 3gigs of
ram, so disk space should not have been a problem.

[Bug 275998] Re: internal mic capture very low volume when routed through pulseaudio

2009-12-20 Thread Wolter Hellmund
For all of you whose problem hasn't been solved, and whose sound input
cannot be detected by pulseaudio yet, I think I have the solution.

NULL SOUND INPUT
=
1. Install [audacity]
2. Go to [preferences/devices] and select your sound card from the combobox
under the [Recording] section.
NOTE: I have [ALSA] in the [Interface] section, [default] in the [Playback]
section and [HDA Intel: ...] in the [Recording] section.
3. Back in the main window, play around with the microphone combobox and record
until you get the right microphone (you replay what you recorded to see if you
were successful)
NOTE: [Digital Mic:0] worked for me just fine.
4. Install [padevchooser] (PulseAudio Device Chooser) and open it. You will see
an applet in your panel.
5. From its menu, select [Manager...]. Now go to the [Devices] tab and select
your input source. Then click on [Properties] button.
NOTE: My input source's name is [alsa_input.pci-_00_1b.0.analog-stereo].
6. Click on [Show Volume Meter]. Here you are supposed to record as you did
with [audacity], now that [audacity] sets the mic for pulse.

QUIET SOUND INPUT
==
1. (Follow last guide from step #4).
2. Play with the [Volume] slider until you have decent settings.
NOTE: I have my slider at 200%.

LETTING GSTREAMER ENJOY THE GLORY
===
1. Run [gstreamer-properties].
2. Select [PulseAudio Sound Server] as your default input.
NOTE: I have [Default] as my [Device]. There are two other devices labeled as
[Unknown]. One is the same as [Default] (the mic) and the other one is the
default output. Use this second one when you want to record what your computer
plays.

If this guide worked for you, feel free to come by to #ubu...@irc.freenode.net
and say hi to mezquitale and wolter. But mezquitale is the real mage here. He
helped me out and gave me the audacity technique.

[Bug 498715] [NEW] segfault when changing brighness

2009-12-20 Thread cyco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-power-manager

Bug description:

When I start my laptop usually the screen brightness is set to minimum. I have
xfce4-power-manager running in e17. However trying to increase the screen
brightness using the function keys fails.
Running xfce4-power-manager --no-daemon in a terminal gives the following
output:

(xfce4-power-manager:2106): xfce4-power-manager-WARNING **: could not
map keysym 1008ffa8 to keycode

and pressing one of the brightness function keys results in a segfault
.
However after setting the brightness manually via: echo 7
/sys/class/backlight/sony/brightness
xfce4-power-manager works fine and setting the brightness works.

Backtrace attached.

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2009-12-20 Thread Andrew
Everyone, unless you have a comment relevent to the fixing of the
problem as described below, please stop commenting so that the bug
report remains clear. If you are simply saying it affects you, please
use the 'This bug affects 18 people. Does this bug affect you?' link at
the top.

Redirecting focus to the actual bug filed here:

There is a file called 'libcanberra-logout-sound.sh' in
/usr/share/gnome/shutdown that is meant to be run on shutdown. The
reason the file is not played is that the piece of code that is meant to
be in gnome-session to run all files in the /usr/share/gnome/shutdown
directory is not there (it was forgot).

Upstream is a patch someone made to fix it and the nautilus developers
suggested some changes to the patch. This bug needs someone to modify
the patch as required.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 498723] [NEW] libvisual-projectm does not appear in media player visualizer list

2009-12-20 Thread James Woods
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libvisual-projectm

The libvisual plugin package of the popular ProjectM visualizer that's
available in the repository does not work with the latest Ubuntu
release, at least not with Totem.

After installing, the plugin should be available from the dropdown list
of available visualizers in Totem like it has been in previous releases.
That doesn't happen. While I am on Karmic, this problem affected me in

[Bug 498724] [NEW] menu entry doesn't work in XFCE (permission problems?)

2009-12-20 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 477652 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477652

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gsmartcontrol

I am using Karmic Mythbuntu (XFCE) and have manually installed
gsmartcontrol. Clicking the menu item for gsmartcontrol does nothing.

If I type gsmartcontrol into the console, it starts and gives a graphical error
about permissions. If I run gsmartcontrol as sudo, it works as expected. I
understand that there is a gsmartcontrol-root that is meant to detect how to
run as root on the system, but gives:
$ gsmartcontrol-root
/usr/bin/gsmartcontrol-root: 5: su-to-root: not found
So I am wondering if the menu entry points to this.

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2009-12-20 Thread David Clayton
This works on my Ubuntu 9.04 system (tested with multiple user
accounts).

Edit the following file:

/etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

And add this in before the exit 0:

/usr/share/gnome/shutdown/libcanberra-logout-sound.sh

Now your logout of a Gnome session should play whatever logout sound you
have specified (do I get a lollipop for this?).

[Bug 498729] [NEW] performous is outdated, new version is 4.0

2009-12-20 Thread Hiram
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: performous

the new release of performouse brings great improvements, notably guitar
support.

http://performous.org/ :

*  Guitar, bass and drums
o Uses songs in Frets on Fire / FoFiX format
o All tracks (including vocals) are supported
o Autodetection of any connected Guitar Hero and Rock Band instruments
o Support for using a keyboard as guitar controller (FoF style)
o Better hammer-on/pull-off support than in other games
o Engine tries to figure out player's intention instead of picking
the nearest chord
o Multiplayer for as many players as you have instruments for
  o Full 3D note visualization
* Initial hiscore support (press End in song browser)
* Textual feedback for singers after each line
* Guessing background/cover images and videos by filenames (if not
specified in song files)
* SVG graphics and fail samples from Frets on Fire (GPL for the win!)
* Major changes in the internals, including a completely new audio mixer
* Configuration system improvements, now properly supports system and user
conf
* Always use desktop resolution for full screen mode (instead of mode
switching)
* Many minor bugs fixed
* Build/install changes and cleanup
o Installs only minimal amount of cruft
o Increased version requirements for Boost, CMake, etc.
  o Various small bugs fixed

[Bug 370818] Re: Unable to select scan area in preview window

2009-12-20 Thread steelsteel
Perhaps this would help a little:

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 running - and the error concerning the selection in the
xsane scan preview is NOT present!
Scanner is an Canon N676U.
I upgraded since 8.10 - 9.04 - 9.10. (64bit version, still the old ext3 fs
under the system.)

On other hardware (eeebox, asus / old dell desktop, dell / revo3600,
acer / notebook latitude C640, dell) i fresh installed Linux Mint 8. And
the error IS present. (Scanner is Canon LIDE 30, a very compatible one,
too. btw: 32bit version).

Perhaps this would help anyone to solve this problem, before 10.04 is out ;)!
Greetings from north-bavaria!

[Bug 189110] Re: nautilus erroneous error message opening Samba share - can't display Samba drive

2009-12-20 Thread steelsteel
I hope i have found the correct bug:

Nautilus 2.28.1 still have the problem, that only a single click is
needed to open a smb-bookmark in the sidebar.

The default-user doesnt know and gets with a doubleclick the error.
(cant mountpoint already registered apperas, while in background the
smb folder is already opened. confusing the unexperienced users, this
is!)

Further on it is not possible to change the bookmark icons in this
sidebar.

My Christmas Wish: Please fix until 10.04 :)!

[Bug 498736] [NEW] black screen for chat

2009-12-20 Thread Ab3L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

I am running Karmic Koala (9.10).
When I am using a software to chat (like xchat or kvirc), the screen becomes
black for a second each N seconds. It seems that the frequence depends on the
size of the window (per ex. when maximised the screen turns to black each 2
seconds).

I get the same problem even disabling compiz (setting in appearence no
effects).

I would like a stable image and stay in a Linux environment. I didn't
have this problem with Hardy Heron (8.04). Never tested Intrepid (8.10).
I have found this problem, also in Jaunty (9.04).

My graphic card is this:

[SOLVED]

Looking better to my log file, I noticed I got the error always related to
Bitstream font.
I removed Vera*.ttf file from my /usr/share/fonts/windows directory and I ran
the commands suggested by Eduard

sudo dpkg-reconfigure libcairo2 libpango1.0-common
sudo fc-cache -fs
sudo update-pangox-aliases

Restart GDM and now it works!! (at least for me)

[Bug 425408] Re: Acer AspireOne D150-1577 Touchpad problem

2009-12-20 Thread Matt Hamilton
I've got exactly the same problem. Noticed it first on 9.04. Updated to
9.10 and didn't resolve issue :( I have an Acer Aspire One D150-1Bb. It
was very strange as you could click once on an app to launch it (e.g.
firefox) but then you couldn't get firefox to focus and could then not
click on it at all.

Switching to a console terminal and killing X so that it then restarts
would sometimes fix the issue, but not always.

Anything I can do to help debug this, let me know.

[Bug 496908] Re: Not clear what update this installer will do

2009-12-20 Thread Alan Young
I actually thought it meant, check for an updated version of this
installer i.e. clicking the button would simply check for (and, if
found, install) a newer version of ubiquity - *not* any of the other
software updates that might otherwise be dealt with post-installation.

I guess this underlines Jonathon's point about how unclear/ambiguous
this button option is...

If u import music with umlauts, apostrophs into their tags and banshee imports

with: Clannad/Cran Üll, Laith Al Deen
The files and folders become ?names and banshee itself could not read the

[Bug 498745] [NEW] XML code is recognized as HTML, ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8? not highlighted.

2009-12-20 Thread Kamil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I type code:
'?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8 standalone=no?
!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd;
html xmlns=http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml; xml:lang=pl dir=ltr
/html'

and it is recognized as HTML, '?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8
standalone=no?' is not highlighted, just like '?xml-stylesheet
type=...?' when I add this too. This is a bug because, the code is
not HTML, but XHTML, so of course XML too. This is annoying, because of
not highlighting '?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8
standalone=no?' and '?xml-stylesheet type=...?'.
