[Bug 283811] Re: cups says can't promp for authorization when printing to my samba printer

2010-01-20 Thread masterG
Hi all,
Just to confirm the workaround...
I had the same problem, printing failed from Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope on
a samba shared printer (on an XP PC).
The issue came from only a few apps, like Firefox, but not on OpenOffice or
Okular.
Normally the printer sharing on Windows shouldn't prompt for auth, yet the Cups
error.log showed a failed auth message.

I changed the /etc/cups/printers.conf as suggested above:

#AuthInfoRequired username,password
AuthInfoRequired none
...
DeviceURI smb://serverUsername:serverpassw...@sharepath

That fixed the problem, everything works even after restarting CUPS and/or the
Ubuntu box (the printers.conf isn't modified).
Rebooting the Microsoft PC sharing the printer doesn't change the situation
(still able to print).
Think have the same pb from a MAC OS X notebook, I'll try applying the same
config changes and will advise.

Let me know if any log or other information is needed

[Bug 501718] Re: Samba dosn't work if I change the name of computer from intslation to another

2010-01-20 Thread Lustorgan
The problem arises when changing the name in the equipment in the
network properties. as of that moment, although it is reinitiated seems
that Samba is not able to see the new own equipment with the new name.

El problema me surge al cambiar el nombre en el equipo en las
propiedades de red. a partir de ese momento, aunque se reinicie parece
que Samba no es capaz de ver el nuevo propio equipo con el nuevo nombre.

Forgot to say that the two lines:

seem to act the same way, they both contribute to solve the issue.

[Bug 510038] [NEW] [patch] Please provide a example refresh_pattern for debs

2010-01-20 Thread Michael Vogt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: squid

Hi,

to make it easier for admins to use a existing squid cache to also cache
apt-get operations I would
like to add a example refresh_pattern for deb packages. Please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SquidDebProxy for some more background.

I will attach a debdiff that adds it to the example config.

Thanks,

[Bug 510086] [NEW] localhost connection timeouts after start of eucalyptus

2010-01-20 Thread Stephane Chazelas
Public bug reported:

This is on ubuntu karmic server.

After the starting of eucalyptus (sudo start eucalyptus), any TCP
connection attempt on the loopback interface (the connect(2) system
call) to a port that has no listener hangs instead of returning
immediately with ECONNREFUSED.

The problem seems due to a rule added upon startup in the nat iptable:

Chain POSTROUTING (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
 pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
  801 48085 MASQUERADE  all  --  anyany anywhere
!172.19.0.0/16

That masquerades every connection even those locally generated. It could
have other side effects. But the one that causes connection hangs is
quite noticeable and affects many services.

It could also be a kernel bug, because looking at the pcap traces upon a
telnet localhost:

2997.869330  10.10.10.38 - 127.0.0.1TCP 35140  telnet [SYN] Seq=0
Win=32792 Len=0 MSS=16396 TSV=6901389 TSER=0 WS=7

2997.869351127.0.0.1 - 127.0.0.1TCP telnet  35140 [RST, ACK] Seq=1
Ack=1 Win=0 Len=0

and we see retransmissions of that until the connect(2) timesout. While
if there's someone listening:

 3432.999156  10.10.10.38 - 127.0.0.1TCP 57717  telnet [SYN] Seq=0
Win=32792 Len=0 MSS=16396 TSV=6944902 TSER=0 WS=7

Win=32896 Len=0 TSV=6944902 TSER=6944902

3432.999384127.0.0.1 - 127.0.0.1TCP telnet  57717 [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=24
Win=256 Len=0 TSV=6944902 TSER=6944902

It's still masqueraded, but the connection goes through.

Also, I don't like the fact that the whole iptables conf is wiped out as
soon as eucalyptus is started. (note that the UEC default installation
installs ufw whose configuration is wiped that way).

Those tables are installed via a call to iptables-restore on a file
generated on the fly:

root  1374 1  0 17:33 ?00:00:00   apache2 -f
/var/run/eucalyptus/httpd-cc.conf -D FOREGROUND
107   1420  1374  0 17:33 ?00:00:00 apache2 -f

root  3498  3497  0 17:34 ?00:00:00 /bin/sh -

(it's called several times), upon some POST

issues by I don't what.

username, since there is no need for this (smb.conf further below). The
problem is only present for Vista Business or W7 Professional.
I tried the fixes reported here and there for authentication level default in
Vista and later, eg on
http://alinconstantin.blogspot.com/2009/10/windows-7-cannot-access-smb-shares-on.html
but this didn't solve my problem.

[Bug 510207] [NEW] kvm - BUG: Soft lookup - CPU#2 stuck for 225s [swapper:0]

2010-01-20 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

I'm very frustrated with ubuntu and kvm / qemu.
I use the newest version (kermic) and all updates are installed.

With the last kernel I got ext4 errors in my vms (kermic too).
This looks fixed with the new kernel update in the last days, but I get still
CPU stuck error messages like:

[2690.373130] BUG: Soft lookup - CPU#2 stuck for 225s [swapper:0]

I get the same error messages every 4-8 hours and the webserver and mailserver
get stuck. The machine is still online and running (login prompt, shell and ssh
over bridge virtio). The process (swapper then apache then other services)
changes each time. I want to use ubuntu with kvm in a production env.
I use a INTEL P55 Motherboard (newest BIOS) with 8GB DDR3 (checked with
memtest) and 4 SATA2 with RAID1 and LVM.
The VMs are on a LVM too.

[Bug 510213] [NEW] apparmor blocks /usr/local/sbin execution

2010-01-20 Thread Craig
Public bug reported:

Currently, libvirt doesn't have a way to configure port mappings
(amongst other things). As a workaround, I created a script that my
virtual machine uses in place of running KVM directly, and I placed this
script into /usr/local/sbin (which is a standard place to put such non-
packaged, system-local scripts). This script is used by modifying the
VM's XML file's emulator block.

When I attempt to launch the VM, I get these errors in the syslog:
Jan 20 11:51:17 encahl kernel: [  426.931144] type=1502
audit(1264006277.718:1165):  operation=file_perm pid=3595 parent=3541
profile=/usr/sbin/libvirtd//null-22 requested_mask=::r denied_mask=::r
fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name=/usr/local/sbin/kvm-with-rdp-and-http

/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.libvirtd can be modified to fix this problem
rather trivially.

[Bug 379329] Re: CVE-2008-5161: OpenSSH CBC plaintext recovery

2010-01-20 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 have a backported patch to make the chances for a
successful attack even smaller:
openssh (1:5.1p1-5) unstable; urgency=low

  * Backport from upstream CVS (Markus Friedl):
- packet_disconnect() on padding error, too. Should reduce the success
  probability for the CPNI-957037 Plaintext Recovery Attack to 2^-18.

Marking the 9.10 task as Won't fix (and added 9.04 for completeness).
Added 8.10 task and will backport the packet_disconnect() patch with the
next 8.10 openssh security update.

For those that want to address this fully, from
http://www.openssh.com/txt/cbc.adv:
AES CTR mode and arcfour ciphers are not vulnerable to this attack at
all. These may be preferentially selected by placing the following
directive in sshd_config and ssh_config:

Ciphers aes128-ctr,aes256-ctr,arcfour256,arcfour,aes128-cbc,aes256-cbc

[Bug 510418] [NEW] Don't add user `dovecot` to group mail

2010-01-20 Thread Marian Sigler
Public bug reported:

The dovecot-common.postinst script adds the user to group mail, which is
disrecommended by Upstream [1].

This bug has already been fixed in Debian [2] and in the maint bzr repo
[3]

So why I'm reporting this is to make sure that it is fixed in the older
versions to make sure that the user is not added back to the group on
systems where it has been removed manually on the next update of the
package. I don't know how that exactly works (I did not find branches
for the old versions in the maint repo or something, but it should be
fixed somehow :) )

Dustin: not sure what that screenshot you uploaded is. Is that the

If so I don't think you're seeing the same bug -- the issue being
tracked here (and which I'm pretty sure is fixed in qemu 0.12) is a
problem where the vmware-vga has a buffer overrun and crashes the host
kvm process. Your screenshot looks more like the guest crashing to me

[Bug 485277] Re: Error: The MythTV python interface is not installed or Cannot connect to MythTV Backend

2010-01-20 Thread Paul McEnery
Seems like some sort of differentiation is needed between mythvideo for
the frontend, and mythvideo for the backend.

The postinst script for mythvideo appears to create
/home/mythtv/.mythtv. On one of my frontend systems I've simply deleted
/home/mythtv/.mythtv as its not needed on a frontend. Hardly a fix, but
stops the annoying cron messages.

One possible solution:

Separate mythvideo-backend and mythvideo-frontend packages - with the
mythvideo-backend package having a dependency on the python package
complained about above... and mythvideo-frontend not creating
/home/mythtv/.mythtv

This may have other implications... but worth a thought.

[Bug 484650] Re: [Karmic Regression] Photosmart C6380 spews A4 pages of garbage instead of photos

2010-01-20 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I have set CUPs to create debug error logs.

I tried to print two photos. The first printed without any problems.
Then nothing happened with the next one and it sat Processing for
ages. Now it is stuck in a loop (which I have seen on this machine
before) of saying Held until [time], Processing and then straight
back to Held until [time]. Clicking Release takes it back to Held
until [time]. I have tried restarting both the printer and the laptop.
I have tried cancelling the job and redoing it, which does the same.

This is still on Karmic. I am printing wirelessly to the printer, if
that makes any difference. I will attach my error log.?field.comment=I

Hi back,

Forgot to say that the two lines:

seem to act the same way, they both contribute to solve the issue.

[Bug 282315] Re: Gnome-sudoku timings all wrong

2010-01-20 Thread Michael Wood
What appear to be two separate bugs are being marked as dups of this bug
report:

The following reports are about the reported time being way too long:
Bug #348373
Bug #376212
Bug #376535
Bug #381529
Bug #382192
Bug #405025
Bug #446705
Bug #492069

with this one being the worst I've seen:
Bug #455027 (Congratulations! You completed the puzzle in 793 years, 8 months,
2 weeks, 6 days, 6 hours, 48 minutes and 51 seconds (9 years, 9 months, 1 week,
5 days, 21 hours, 44 minutes and 31 seconds active)
You got 2 hints)

These usually seem to have reasonable times for the active time, but
the latter also has that wrong.

These two reports don't specify if the time is less than one minute (like this
one) or longer than expected, so I can't say whether they are duplicates of
this bug or the too long bug:
Bug #437946
Bug #458926

This is the only actual duplicate as far as I can see:
Bug #465315

[Bug 482985] Re: openshot won't open in Ubuntu 9.10

2010-01-20 Thread wl2776
I've did some research and have found the following.

Packaging of libmlt++ is incorrect.
File /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.2 is listed somewhere in the package contents, but it
is not included in the package.
File /usr/lib/libmlt++.so is included only in the -dev package (libmlt++-dev).

Here is the output of several comands on my system - Karmik with all
updates

$ apt-file search libmlt++

libmlt++-dev: /usr/lib/libmlt++.so

libmlt++-dev: /usr/share/doc/libmlt++-dev/changelog.Debian.gz

libmlt++-dev: /usr/share/doc/libmlt++-dev/changelog.gz

libmlt++-dev: /usr/share/doc/libmlt++-dev/copyright

libmlt++2: /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.0.4.4

libmlt++2: /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.2

libmlt++2: /usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/changelog.Debian.gz

libmlt++2: /usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/changelog.gz

libmlt++2: /usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/copyright

$ aptitude show libmlt++2
Package: libmlt++2
State: installed

However, my system doesn't contain a file /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.2

$ locate libmlt++.so.2
$

$ dpkg -L libmlt++2
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/libmlt++2
/usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/copyright
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/libmlt++.so.0.4.10
/usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/NEWS.gz
/usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/changelog.gz
/usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/libmlt++2/README
/usr/lib/libmlt++.so.3

$ apt-file search /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.2
libmlt++2: /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.2

I think, libmlt++ should be repackaged to include libmlt++.so, and
libmlt++.so.2. Probably, these should be symbolic links to the actual .so file
(libmlt++.so.0.4.10).

[Bug 509999] [NEW] when accidentally typing your password in face browser it will show up in plain text

2010-01-20 Thread Gigi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

1) Ubuntu 9.10
2) gdm: 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1

3) When using face-browser mode I except the login screen to never
show any plain-text input.

4) As soon as you start typing (without having selected a user yet)
everything you type will be shown in a small text box in the lower right
corner. I guess this happens since the users are arranged in a list and
this should help you to select a user via the keyboard. However, in a
hurry one might simply start typing his/her password which then of
course is visible in plain-text.

[Bug 506798] Re: du crashes when traversing nfs mounted .snapshot directories

2010-01-20 Thread Tim Nicholas
Hi C,

I have not patched core utils myself.

The only modern version of coreutils which has functioned correctly (not
heavily tested) was the ppa you linked to above - I don't know what
patches have been added to that. The version I have is
coreutils_20100119~8.4.5-e489f~ppa1_amd64.deb

We're just testing out Ubuntu 9.10 so I havne't been forced to roll out
a fix yet and am hoping for a better option than the kamil patch (which
i don't expect to be maintained upstream).

Cheers,
Tim

[Bug 510000] [NEW] Eye of GNOME does not remember page size settings

2010-01-20 Thread .kkursor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Eye of GNOME does not remember page size if changed via File - Page
settings menu. For example, if I need to print a photo on 10x15 sheet,
it is not possible with standard approach.

How to reproduce:
1. Open a jpeg file in eog.
2. Select File - Page settings. Change the values and click Apply.
3. Open previous menu again and make sure that settings are NOT applied.
4. If you are not sure if they are applied - print the file and you'll see
everything.
5. ???
6. PROFIT!

Expected behaviour:
After alteration of page size properties in Page settings menu the choice
should be remembered at least until the window is closed.

Temporary workaround:
Modify page settings on Image parameters tab in Print dialog.

 This bug report is about decrypting disks after the root filesystem is
 already mounted. Please file a separate bug report for the issue you're
 seeing.

 Also, the library dependencies of cryptsetup are expected to be pulled
 into the initramfs automatically by update-initramfs. Are you using
 some other non-standard tool to generate your initramfs?

Gilles, looking at this again, at this time I don't think we can do

[Bug 505029] Re: Keyboard repeat rate is often reset

2010-01-20 Thread ReneS
I can reproduce it on my Lenovo T500 with 9.10 with an Microsoft Natural
Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 USB (wired).

Remove external USB keyboard, suspend notebook, wake it up again, plug
in external keyboard, and test repeat rate. It is slow again. Internal
keyboard is still fast and like set.

Open Preferences Keyboard and touch Delay setting, even put it back to
the setting you found when opening the preferences. The external
keyboard repeat rate is fast now too.

This happens to me every day when going to the office. The repeat rate
is reset to slow.

What logs do you need?

Thank you for reporting this bug, Brian. Take a look at

about this kind of bug and especially how to get a batchbuffer dump.
Other things that would be useful is disabling any OpenGL stuff and also
try some newer and older mainline kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds) to see if any of them
stop the freezes.

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2010-01-20 Thread Eric Hammond
Thank you, Robert! Your instructions were very clear and helpful.

Some obvious touchpad bugs are clearly fixed on my E6500. I'll keep an
eye out for the other odd ones which were more sporadic, but so far, so
good.

For others attempting this on Jaunty, I'll point out:

- The referenced alps-dave-2.6.31.patch is available in the Patches
section towards the top right of the launchpad bug page.

- The patch had a couple rejects with the Jaunty kernel. In the first one, it
was pretty easy to see where to change the file drivers/input/mouse/alps.c so
that this line:
   { { 0x62, 0x02, 0x14 }, 0xcf, 0xcf, ALPS_PASS | ALPS_DUALPOINT }, /*
Dell Latitude E6500 */
  instead read like:
   { { 0x62, 0x02, 0x14 }, 0xcf, 0xcf, DELL_STYLE_DUALPOINT },
  The second patch reject was just comments.

- The final copying can be done a bit more easily using the commands:

  sudo cp /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko \
   /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko.orig

  sudo cp ~/kernel/ubuntu-jaunty/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko \
   /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko

- Install the new kernel module using:

  sudo rmmod psmouse
  sudo modprobe psmouse

If there's any way this can get into Jaunty it will make a lot of people
happy, but I'll try to spread the word to the folks I know who have been
hurting.

[Bug 217571] Re: xsane only scans as root

2010-01-20 Thread Valeryan_24
HEllo,

Same issue in Karmic : all worked fine in Jaunty, but I was unable to
install Brother Scanner DCP-7030 on a fresh Karmic Koala (printing and
driver are OK).

I donwloaded sane-utils  /  Brscan3 :
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/download_scn.html#brscan3
Scanner Driver USB scan-key-tool :
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn3.html

I did : sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules
in section libusb device nodes, I replaced 0664 by 0666

But no scanner was identified by xsane.

I used sudo lsusb command to see my scanner, it was on Bus 004 Device
003: Brother Industries, Ltd DCP-130C

Reason of impossible use was that device 3 was root owned.

So I opened Nautilus as root, went to dev/bus/usb/004 and device 3 (003 file)
was with root permission only.
I modified it for my user name and now xsane works well, scanner is recognized.

[Bug 510004] [NEW] [lucid regression] strange resume from suspend to RAM

2010-01-20 Thread Per Ångström
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

On this laptop, resume from suspend to RAM barely works under Lucid,
while it works flawlessly under Jaunty.

These are the most salient aberrations:
1) The display comes back in a strange pattern of random colors and characters.
It looks like the display is in console mode, but the screen saver seems to be
active, since if I type in my password I will later find the display unlocked.
2) To actually get to a sane display, I have found that switching between a few
virtual consoles will eventually do the trick. If I did not blindly type in my
password earlier on, I will now see the screen saver's password prompt.
3) When I finally get back to Gnome, I find that the desktop background has
changed to an irregular black-and-white pattern.
4) After resume, the machine thinks it is running on battery, so the display is
dimmed to the lowest setting, and the battery icon is displayed.

I don't find this behavior acceptable, especially since the same
function used to work perfectly on the same hardware in an earlier OS
version.

Attaching pm-suspend.log. Shouldn't ubuntu-bug have done that
automatically?

[Bug 465968] Re: [Dell Inc. Inspiron 1501] suspend/resume failure

2010-01-20 Thread thecoshman
With latest updates and so forth, switching user is not an issue,
suspend/sleep (low power mode with RAM still powered) has no problems. I
believe that hibernate is ok for me. I will, when next the laptop is
free (the lady is powering through course work), try to work out exactly
how to course this problem, if that problem dose still happen for me.

If I can't repeat this problem, I think you (Dovel) and I should try to
work out what hardware differences we may have. It's probably just a
freak line up of hardware that causes this problem.

Till next time
