[Bug 521085] Re: Samba 3.4.0 denies access to Roaming Profiles for XP Clients
Many thanks Patrick for investigating that through. I'm closing the main bug task since it's working with Lucid's samba version. I'm nominating this fix for Karmic, we'll try to track down the patch that fixed it in 3.4.0-3.4.5 changelogs. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Fix Released ** Also affects: samba (Ubuntu Karmic) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Samba 3.4.0 denies access to Roaming Profiles for XP Clients https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/521085 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 524101] Re: optionally fetch public ssh keys from Launchpad when starting an instance
Rather, if euca-add-keypair could be pointed to an existing id file (optionally, pointing to one stored in Launchpad), that would be terrific. The fact that we have to generate a new key each time we upload an identity to EC2/Eucalyptus is terribly annoying; using an existing identity/key pair would be a huge usability improvement over ec2-api-tools. -- optionally fetch public ssh keys from Launchpad when starting an instance https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to eucalyptus in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
Re: [Bug 463684] Re: openldap sections in ubuntu server guide not updated for packages in karmic
Yes, the current situation sucks. Unfortunately, it cannot all be laid at the feet of Ubuntu. Like you, I spent a good week in a maze of twisty passages where nothing worked. Then, painfully, I emerged from that mess over a few weeks to get a working system. The core issue is that LDAP has moved on while most of the available documentation has not. Almost all the search accessible documentation is based on the venerable 'slapd.conf' but OpenLDAP has moved to an embedded Db. So, like an anthropologist, one has to sift through the docs and try to figure out what is still relevant and what no longer works. It's a hard slog. The #openldap irc channels sometimes helps. Then, there's Ubuntu which silently transitioned from the older system to the newer one without really considering the consequences for the newbies like me who were getting their first dose of LDAP in the middle of the transition. Ubuntu doesn't have infinite resources and made the code transition without having the documenters who could at least put up the flags warning that 'here be monsters'. Fixing it though, requires a good documentation writer who will take on the task of writing a really decent chapter. In itself, that's a couple of weeks of work. Unfortunately, the cost of figuring things out takes so much time that there's none left to 'volunteer' to fix the docs. (And my Gnumeric manual is ever waiting for my spare documenter cycles.) So it never gets fixed---such goes life in the collaborosphere. So, good luck to you with your next distribution. You now also know that newer LDAPs are working differently from the way things used to work so you have a leg up when installing that. all the best, --adrian On Mon, 2010-02-22 at 01:36 +, murray wrote: I am sick of this. I have spent the last 4 days upgrading, installing, uninstalling trying really hard to get OpenLDAP to work on Ubuntu but I am just now giving up. For those who care to listen there are some reasons: 1. I originally had it working on Edgy but when I went to test some stuff on Friday it was no longer working. Plus I thought it was probably time for an update... 2. The update had some moments but I eventually arrived at Karmic but along the way my slapd.conf wouldn't upgrade. 3. No worries, I'll remove and install the package again. Really really bad decision. 4. The installation wouldn't work because the remove wouldn't delete the slapd.conf. The remove was failing as was the install. I eventually deleted the slapd.conf manually so the remove and install would then work. I was surprised that a new slapd.conf was never created. 5. The configuration script asks just 3 questions when it clearly should be asking a whole lot more. Nobody seems to know why it's not asking more but they think the documentation should be updated to reflect that the configuration will only ask 3 questions. Duh! 6. More googling and I found a step by step to getting the ldap server working. Well, at least there were steps but I couldn't get them to work. I needed some Berkeley database which I couldn't find anywhere, and I looked for other packages that utilised this bdb and tried installing them - I don't know if the database arrived or not but the LDAP script still failed with some error about the database, I think it was error (80) - really cool messages. So my ldap server is like a beached whale without this database I thought that was what pre- requisites were for 7. None of the ldapadd scripts worked and now the problems are just adding up... Wouldn't it be nice to have a piece of software that would load, provide some configuration options and then you could use a tool like LDAPExplorerTool2 to do the loading and searching functions. I'm a developer and my application operates as an LDAP client - I don't want to learn all of the intricacies of the LDAP server in order to test my application. I want just the basics operating so I can test my app with a couple of use cases. I'm now completely turned off Ubuntu and will be heading off to another Linux derivative. Good bye. [Bug 525741] [NEW] [FFe] VMBuilder 0.12.0
Public bug reported: I'd like to request permission to upload VMBuilder 0.12.0 to Lucid. 0.12.0 is the result of a major refactoring of VMBuilder. It's a several thousand line diff, and I'm sure there are things that broke in the process (I've begun reporting the bugs against VMBuilder upstream, if you're curious). However, this is the direction VMBuilder upstream is going. To make maintenance in Lucid as easy as possible, it would be best to track 0.12. I'm personally dedicated to fix every regression caused by this. I expect to fix most this week (so not quite in time for alpha 3), and the rest in time for beta 1. [Bug 463684] Re: openldap sections in ubuntu server guide not updated for packages in karmic
Murray's comments is exactly what I was expecting to happen, and what I warned of in the bug i filled [442498]. As I mentioned, not everyone who wishes to use openldap is a system administrator who wishes to setup a production ldap environment. Many are people who need to use an ldap server, and who are NOT interested in wasting hours and hours learning all the complexity of openldap's cn=config Those people will try ubuntu, waste time struggling to get it working, give up and think 'ubuntu sucks' What really is rubbing salt in the wound, is that this is NOT a question of something that is missing and that needs to be added. it is *NOT* a documentation problem (although documentation quality makes things even worse) The debconf script that would create a completely working-out-of-the-box system EXISTED in the last version, and supported cn=config, and had all the flexibility one might need since they were debconf-based. So no extra work is required. This whole situation has been created due to the REMOVAL of functionality that worked fine, at the cost of making openldap UNUSABLE for a significant portion of people who who need it, for NO BENEFIT WHATSOEVER -- openldap sections in ubuntu server guide not updated for packages in karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463684 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openldap in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I have another fix queued for eucalyptus karmic SRU, but I want to get this package moved to -updates before overwriting what's in -proposed now. [Bug 524893] Re: Can't boot initramfses
The initramfs image is an optionally gzipped cpio archive (which must have been built with cpio --format=newc in order for the kernel to recognise it --- note this is not the default behaviour for cpio). The filesystem is unpacked into a ramfs or similar, so there is no special size restriction. The first user process to run in the initramfs is usally /init I believe. [ 1.846490] rootfs image is not initramfs (junk in compressed archive); looks like an initrd The kernel always falls back to assuming initrd if the ramdisk image doesn't look like a cpio archive (which is just a whole filesystem image which is dumped into a ramdisk block device, which must be big enough, and mounted). If the initramfs image was built by hand, it might have been built wrongly; otherwise I guess there may be a kernel or qemu problem, or the image is truncated etc. -- Can't boot initramfses https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524893 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 231060] Re: packages dnsmasq and libvirt-bin conflict with each other
Implementation of this in libvirt is blocked by a race condition that prevents the use of the --interface argument in libvirt. [Bug 295520] Re: dhcp3-server vlan support seems to be broken
Reading the linux-netdev archives ( http://marc.info/?l=linux- netdevm=124836694205107w=2 ); ISC dhcp3d [sic] does not use libpcap, and does not query the packet socket for the VLAN tag, so it treats every VLAN's packets as for the default VLAN.. This is just as the OP describes. So unless the behaviour of the raw interface changes back to the old way or ISC adopts libpcap, then a single instance of dhcpd will never be able to handle the default interface with additional VLAN interfaces off the same NIC. A suggested enhancement/workaround would be to have out-of-the-box support for an instance per interface. -- dhcp3-server vlan support seems to be broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/295520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dhcp3 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 526009] [NEW] krb5-utils kinit will not auth against AIX's dce secd
Public bug reported: We use DCE on AIX to provide our Kerberos5 KDCs. This configuration has worked fine for quite a while with heimdal-clients providing kinit and openssh-client has been able to successfully GSSAPI authenticate. Since the 1.8 alpha version released on February 18th, ssh fails with Cannot find ticket for requested realm. Kinit, as provided from krb5-user fails with kinit: KDC has no support for encryption type while getting initial credentials This makes kerberos unuseable in my environment. For now the machine has been reverted to 1.7 beta 3 as grabbed from karmic. [Bug 497732] Re: Tar exited with error 512 () status
Well, to avoid the error state in backuppc I added --ignore-failed- read to the tar command in localhost.pl [1]: $Conf{TarClientCmd} = '/usr/bin/env LC_ALL=C $tarPath -c -v -f - -C $shareName' . ' --totals --ignore-failed-read'; The fact is backuppc makes backup of localhost under backuppc system user, not a sudoer one, not root (see the comment in localhost.pl...). I don't know if this is right or not, but it's good to know that those files (passwd, shadow, group, etc.), aren't copied in the process. [Bug 507616] Re: CustomLog directive in apache2.conf makes it impossible to change default logging without editing the global config.
The problem with editing apache2.conf is that future distro changes get lost. Once you edit a config file the end user is given two options during an upgrade. They can either replace the current file with the packaged maintainer's file or keep the edited file. So either the system loses the local change or else it because distinct to a default ubuntu configuration. The greater problem is depending on which version of apache2 was installed at the point that the change was made, the configuration can look different. If this log line was moved to a file within conf.d then I could set up a divert which over-wrote the config without disrupting the package maintainers future changes. -- CustomLog directive in apache2.conf makes it impossible to change default logging without editing the global config. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507616 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Thanks Dustin. [Bug 526009] Re: krb5-utils kinit will not auth against AIX's dce secd
It sounds like the secd you're using only supports single DES. Single DES has been deprecated for over 10 years now as a cipher, due to its very short key length. I would highly encourage you to upgrade your infrastructure to a more secure encryption type. If you simply must continue using your current infrastructure, you can set allow_weak_crypto = true in the [libdefaults] section of /etc/krb5.conf, but this is *strongly* disrecommended, and may cease to work in future versions of krb5. ** Changed in: krb5 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Won't Fix -- krb5-utils kinit will not auth against AIX's dce secd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/526009 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to krb5 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 392532] Re: apache2.2-common: /etc/init.d/apache2 script is empty
I suspect that logrotate chokes on the '}' that is in the postrotate script in /etc/logrotate.d/apache2. Normally it works fine, but maybe if there is a configuration parse error before the script, something goes wrong. If you have modified /etc/logrotate.conf, please provide that file as well. [Bug 392532] Re: apache2.2-common: /etc/init.d/apache2 script is empty
The output of logrotate -d /etc/logrotate.conf (run as root) would be interesting, too. Especially if it mentions errors or the file /etc/init.d/apache2. BTW, you can restore the file with cd /tmp aptitude download apache2.2-common dpkg --extract apache2.2-common_*.deb apache2.2-common sudo cp apache2.2-common/etc/init.d/apache2 /etc/init.d A normal reinstall is not enough because dpkg will think you have emptied the file intentionally. [Bug 525741] Re: [FFe] VMBuilder 0.12.0
The delta between the 0.11 and 0.12 branches is vast, and bugfixes from 0.12 are going to be a hassle to backport to 0.11. The upstream focus of development is 0.12, and certainly lucid+1 will have 0.12 (or later), so 0.11 will, unless someone dedicates ressources to maintaining it, be abandoned. After Hardy was released, ubuntu-vm-builder was rewritten from a rather large shell script to the python project that is VMBuilder. The Hardy version really could have benefited from a lot of the bugs we fixed in the new implementation, but backporting them was an extreme hassle, and as a result the version in Hardy was virtually left to rot. Arguably, the situation isn't quite as bad this time (it's, after all, still the same programming language), but I'd really like to have the LTS version of VMBuilder be as maintainable as possible for as long as possible, and I think 0.12 gives us that. -- [FFe] VMBuilder 0.12.0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/525741 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
