Re: [Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2010-04-05 Thread Christian Perrier
This has just cropped up on my PC too (Xubuntu 9.10), after installing
lirc, hangs on bootup just before the login screen (slim). (smb.conf is
vanilla). Wouldn't work in recovery mode, told me about the nmbd pid but
wouldn't let me do anything about it so CTRL-ALT-DEL was necessary.

 Samba version 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6

Found that by removing quiet and splash from the grub boot entry I could
boot up OK again, and nmbd and smbd showing in htop.

The same was reported to Debian as well and looks like it is the same
timing problem: http://bugs.debian.org/576415

I'm just discovering the long story of that LP#462169. It apparently
got fixed in some Ubuntu packages and just forgot flowing upstream.

If only I could find the patch in LP, it could be added to the Debian
package but that bug is...ahemquite hairy. I get gazillion
informations about the people who are subscribed to the bug but no
obvious point that says *this is the fix*.

Kenneth: Enabling php in the userdirs is a security hazard: It allows

Re: [Bug 554903] Re: apache2 with mod php5 does not execute index.php

2010-04-05 Thread Zalzadore
OK,
So, upon further investigation I think we can close this one. It seems that
it was the caching in Chrome that was the problem. Firefox did not exhibit
the same problem and when I tried to access the dud URLs through Chrome,
apache2 was not even contacted.

It seems that when PHP was disabled for the userdirs Chrome cached the files
that were served up as ascii downloads and kept giving me the same thing
even when I changed the apache2 config.

I flushed the Chrome cache and now all is good. Incidentaly, the disabling
of userdir PHP in this way was confusing for me as I am not actually using
the userdir mod. I have just changed the DocumentRoot to be off my home
directory to make local development easier.

Thanks for all your efforts guys, sorry about the run around.

reasons, it is no longer possible to use wide links and UNIX
extensions at the same time. After applying this security update, wide
links will be disabled automatically as UNIX extensions are turned on

@Christian Perrier

If you search for fixed in in this page, you'll find:

This bug was fixed in the package samba - 2:3.4.3-2ubuntu2

Then you go to:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2:3.4.3-2ubuntu2

And you'll find:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38098612/samba_2%3A3.4.3-2ubuntu1_2%3A3.4.3-2ubuntu2.diff.gz

I guess, you can also look for #LP: 462169 in the Changelog of the
latest version of the branch that you prefer. Then find the diff for the
version mentioned in the Changelog.

And perhaps there is an even better way to find this information.

[Bug 535147] Re: libvirtd can't start qemu:///session domain - failed to set CPU affinity: Operation not permitted

2010-04-05 Thread Chris Bainbridge
The only KVM hardware I have access to at the moment is a production
server. Upgrading it to lucid - which is still in beta - is not really
feasible at the moment.

Now my question is when i installed the UEC Node, it said that hardware
acceleration will not be available. It didnt mention that my attempts
in running the VM in the node will be futile.. Or is there a way to
bypass this? if its not possible, it shouldnt have allowed me to
install it in the first place.

[Bug 555981] [NEW] Restoring KVM guest from saved state results in hung guest

2010-04-05 Thread Kindjal
Public bug reported:

The dom0 host is a fresh install of Ubuntu Lucid

ii qemu-kvm0.12.3+noroms-0ubuntu4
ii libvirt-bin 0.7.5-5ubuntu17
ii libvirt00.7.5-5ubuntu17

kernel 2.6.32-18-generic-pae

The domU is a Ubuntu Lucid created with ubuntu-vm-builder:

ubuntu-vm-builder kvm lucid \
  --domain vm2 --dest vm2 --hostname vm2 \
--mem 256 --user user --pass password \
  --ip 10.0.24.200 --mask 255.255.255.0 --net 10.0.24.0 \
  --bcast 10.0.24.255 --gw 10.0.24.253 --dns 10.0.5.220 --bridge=br0 \
  --libvirt qemu:///system \
  --addpkg openssh-server \
  --addpkg acpid \
  --addpkg acpi-support \
  --addpkg screen

virsh suspend/restore works ok.
virsh save domain /tmp/domain.state works ok
virsh restore /tmp/domain.state claims to work, but then connect via vnc, or
serial console reveals a hung guest, unsreponsive to any input.

This is different than a previously reported kernel panic in the guest.

The kvm process on dom0 is consuming 100% of cpu.

Stracing the process reveals...

[Bug 556167] [NEW] vmbuilder uses parted to create disk images, which leads to broken sector counts (cannot use grub2 on disk images created by vmbuilder/parted)

2010-04-05 Thread Kees Cook
Public bug reported:

parted uses a fixed sector count of 32 when writing partitions to a
non-block device.  (See init_file() via linux_new() in
libparted/arch/linux.c) As a result, the track size of disks created
with vmbuilder is 32 sectors, not the generally expected 63 sectors
(used with LBA mode). This means that the embedding region between
the end of the MBR and the start of partition 1 is half the normal
size, and grub2 will not install.

/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Your embedding area is unusually small.
core.img won't fit in it..

Fastest solution I see is to use an environment override as already done
in init_file() for sector size. Perhaps PARTED_SECTORS? And then set
this to 63 when calling parted from vm-builder.

** Affects: vm-builder (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Sometime ago the Ubuntu slapd package changed the homedir of the
openldap user from /var/lib/ldap to /nonexistent.

quote
openldap (2.4.17-1ubuntu3) karmic; urgency=low

+ Move openldap user home from /var/lib/ldap to /nonexistent.
/quote

Now I agree that /var/lib/ldap shouldn't be the openldap homedir, but
currently the /nonexistent directory is actually being created while
installing slapd, however creating a directory in the root filesytem for
no reason is a bug IMHO. Please change this behaviour by not creating
the homedir when the openldap user is being created, or better, set the
homedir to /var/run/slapd.

I also attached a patch to fix some minor issues I experienced while
using the Ubuntu slapd package:

*) As mentioned in #489619 and #506317 which are duplicates of #427842,
the default ACL (olcAccess) in the frontend configuration is lacking
essential entries. For now #427842 is tagged as wishlist item, that's
wrong, the current default configuration is defect and SHOULD be fixed.
The two extra olcAccess lines suggested (and in this patch) has NOTHING
to do with security or some kind. Please read the (last) comment in
#489619 by Quanah Gibson-Mount for explanation (and realize he knows
more about OpenLDAP or directory services in general most of us ever
will...)

*) The default config database is provided with an admin user
(olcRootDN: cn=admin,cn=config) without a password (olcRootPW). It's
best-practice to not use both of them anyway, and configure OpenLDAP
ACL's with olcAccess attributes, but in the current state this entry is
completely bogus and should be removed, or the package installer should
ask for a password and provision the olcRootPW attribute ({SSHA}
preferred).

*) While playing with slapd and Corosync/Pacemaker cluster stuff, I
discovered the slapd init script doesn' t have a status function. I'm
trying to create a working OCF compatible script (with monitor stuff)
but for now I'm using the default LSB init function for testing. The
attached patch adds some simple status checking with LSB compatible exit
codes which may be usefull for other purposes.

Thanks for packaging OpenLDAP !!!

Hardly a case of forgetting; the reports of nmbd failures only started
coming in after a change in behavior in upstart, which Debian doesn't use,
so the fix wasn't believed to be relevant to Debian. In hindsight, it
makes sense that it would also affect NM-using Debian systems.

The exact problem appears to also result in part from a behavior change in
nmbd, and I've never been able to reliably reproduce this; I suspect an
eglibc regression, but since I can't reproduce it to begin with, it's been
hard to pin down.

If only I could find the patch in LP, it could be added to the Debian
package but that bug is...ahemquite hairy. I get gazillion
informations about the people who are subscribed to the bug but no
obvious point that says *this is the fix*.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2%3a3.4.0-3ubuntu5.2 and
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2%3a3.4.0-3ubuntu5.3 are the
precise versions you want; this has been implemented differently for Lucid
by condensing the if-up.d script and the init script to a single upstart job
that handles this. The diffs are available at

The connection can get established long after network-manager is
started, so even if network-manager is started before samba, that
doesn't mean the networking will be up.
I think nmbd should either stay around in case the network comes up
later, or have something in /etc/network/if-up.d/ restart it if
 necessary.

An if-up.d script seems to be exactly what's necessary here, unless someone
can figure out *why* nmbd is failing...

want to use kvm or qemu with the -vga std option. This VGA mode adds
higher resolutions to the SDL window than the default cirrus driver

vgabios is broken for -vga std, and is working with the pending
 upload.

Most users of kvm/qemu either don't use SDL at all (ie, they are using
virt-manager, virsh, or Eucalyptus to launch VMs), and of the
remaining users that do launch KVM from the command line and SDL, most
of those are probably just using the default cirrus driver. Thus, I
suspect that the affect users of this problem are a vocal minority.

The emulated video card and the output type are orthogonal. You can just
as easily be using VNC with -vga std as you can use SDL with the default
cirrus. Any of combination of output type (sdl, vnc, or none) and
emulated video card (cirrus (default), vmware and std-vga) is
possible. Indeed, libvirt allows any of these combinations.

vgabios has two reverse-dependencies in lucid: qemu-common and bochs.
Has anyone regression-tested this for bochs?
I suspect that the bochs package can possibly be dropped from the
archive. I think qemu was the only user of bochs previously, and
upstream QEMU has switched away from bochs to seabios and vgabios
instead. This needs to be investigated a bit more (perhaps a post on
ubuntu-devel, in case anyone else knows of what in Lucid might still
 require bochs.

I see no reason to drop bochs. It's a project in its own right.

[Bug 555539] [NEW] evolution calendar cranshed when adding task on a particular time

2010-04-05 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

I am not sure if it really an evolution problem or some other related
package...

When I have clicked on an empty time of a particular date to try to
create a new task for that schedule, not only evolutions turned gray,
for ever, but my session has frozen (only the mouse still moved and I
could login to textual consoles via Ctrl+F1) forcing me to
Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc (which I have enabled in me gnome keyboard settings)

There was also an evolution-data-server something to report via apport-
bug but it refused to repport (could be related, cause it has shown up
after the crash)

I can reproduce the error at will, since it happens every single time I
try it (and I to need to terminate the entire gnome session every time)

I can try some tests or send some log files if necessary, but I am not
sure what to try... please, let me know if its necessary

[Bug 555541] [NEW] xorg breaks with multiple monitors

2010-04-05 Thread OmniUni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Using Ubuntu Lucid (Beta, I know)

Everything seems fine on the LVDS, but plugging in an external VGA
monitor yields (at best) a wavy image on the secondary monitor. Up until
recently, the xserver performance was at least stable, but when I tried
it tonight, X threw tons of errors. I checked the log and there were a
bunch of issues with modelines, but nothing that stood out to me (I'm
not to familiar with X's log).

Eventually, X crashed. it is completely unusable on any dual monitor
configuration. About two weeks ago, it was actually working perfectly (a
small but significant improvement over Karmic).

I have an MSI Wind, U210 with a Radeon x1250

Oh, and I tried the ubuntu-bug report but it was just after I upgraded
my packages to the xorg-edgers repository, to see if I could improve the
situation right now, so it failed.

[Bug 555539] Re: evolution calendar cranshed when adding task on a particular time

2010-04-05 Thread PresuntoRJ
It might be uglier than I have reported a short while ago... since then,
I have been testing a relatively conservative way of trying the same
thing, to avoid the crash...

I have then pressed the New button on the tools bar... it has also
crashed the evolution at least, my session is still responding this
time

I have been wondering if the previous crashes had something to do with
the way evolution links its schedules in the gnome calendar which
appears when you click on the clock in the top panel (not sure what the
name of that applet also)...

[Bug 406397] Re: init: job stuck with expect fork/daemon when parent reaps child

2010-04-05 Thread PFudd
Hi...

I got bitten by this bug earlier today.

I was attempting to set 'autossh' to be respawned, via a new
autossh.conf file. I copied the cron.conf file, and changed the exec
line to the appropriate autossh command line, and left the rest the
same. The mistake was that autossh doesn't fork into the background,
but 'expect fork' was set.

The outcome was that 'initctl stop autossh' and 'initctl start autossh'
both hang, and I had to copy autossh.conf to autossh2.conf and delete
the 'expect fork' line before I could get autossh to run. I can't get
rid of the old autossh entry in 'initctl list', except possibly by
rebooting. Since I'm remotely logged in, I don't want to do that unless
I'm confident my connection is going to work... yay, catch-22.

exec /usr/bin/autossh -M 81 -N -R 29:127.0.0.1:22 servername

2010-04-05 Thread Sandeep
This still does not boot - I have tried Beta 1 and 04 April 2010

Can somebody please take a look at this - this effectively means, we
will not be able to use Lucid on any of our machine.

In my previous mail, I have attached compressed /var/log after letting
the computer sit for a few hours (it did eventually boot into the live-
usb then). Please let me know how else can I help.

[Bug 513152] Re: Keyboard layout panel indicator ignores theme font color settings

2010-04-05 Thread Andrei Rohau
IIRC, the issue is caused by 'toy' Cairo API usage which does not handle
hinting settings and scales the label text down. The mentioned commit
introduces proper font setup routine. You can check upsteam bug
duplicates for direct references.

Also, the flow in the code is fixed, at the beginning of /etc/init.d

. $DEFAULTFILE

RPCNFSDPRIORITY=0
RPCMOUNTDOPTS=-p 32771 -g
NEED_SVCGSSD=no
RPCSVCGSSDOPTS=

This will allow the sourcing of /etc/default/nfs-kernel-server first, then
defining what you want here.
