Re: [Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet
This has just cropped up on my PC too (Xubuntu 9.10), after installing lirc, hangs on bootup just before the login screen (slim). (smb.conf is vanilla). Wouldn't work in recovery mode, told me about the nmbd pid but wouldn't let me do anything about it so CTRL-ALT-DEL was necessary. Samba version 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6 Found that by removing quiet and splash from the grub boot entry I could boot up OK again, and nmbd and smbd showing in htop. The same was reported to Debian as well and looks like it is the same timing problem: http://bugs.debian.org/576415 I'm just discovering the long story of that LP#462169. It apparently got fixed in some Ubuntu packages and just forgot flowing upstream. If only I could find the patch in LP, it could be added to the Debian package but that bug is...ahemquite hairy. I get gazillion informations about the people who are subscribed to the bug but no obvious point that says *this is the fix*. -- nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462169 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 554903] Re: apache2 with mod php5 does not execute index.php
OK, So, upon further investigation I think we can close this one. It seems that it was the caching in Chrome that was the problem. Firefox did not exhibit the same problem and when I tried to access the dud URLs through Chrome, apache2 was not even contacted. It seems that when PHP was disabled for the userdirs Chrome cached the files that were served up as ascii downloads and kept giving me the same thing even when I changed the apache2 config. I flushed the Chrome cache and now all is good. Incidentaly, the disabling of userdir PHP in this way was confusing for me as I am not actually using the userdir mod. I have just changed the DocumentRoot to be off my home directory to make local development easier. Thanks for all your efforts guys, sorry about the run around. A. [Bug 556167] [NEW] vmbuilder uses parted to create disk images, which leads to broken sector counts (cannot use grub2 on disk images created by vmbuilder/parted)
Public bug reported: parted uses a fixed sector count of 32 when writing partitions to a non-block device. (See init_file() via linux_new() in libparted/arch/linux.c) As a result, the track size of disks created with vmbuilder is 32 sectors, not the generally expected 63 sectors (used with LBA mode). This means that the embedding region between the end of the MBR and the start of partition 1 is half the normal size, and grub2 will not install. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Your embedding area is unusually small. core.img won't fit in it.. Fastest solution I see is to use an environment override as already done in init_file() for sector size. Perhaps PARTED_SECTORS? And then set this to 63 when calling parted from vm-builder. ** Affects: vm-builder (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- vmbuilder uses parted to create disk images, which leads to broken sector counts (cannot use grub2 on disk images created by vmbuilder/parted) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/556167 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 556176] [NEW] slapd homedir (and some enhancements...)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: slapd Sometime ago the Ubuntu slapd package changed the homedir of the openldap user from /var/lib/ldap to /nonexistent. quote openldap (2.4.17-1ubuntu3) karmic; urgency=low + Move openldap user home from /var/lib/ldap to /nonexistent. /quote Now I agree that /var/lib/ldap shouldn't be the openldap homedir, but currently the /nonexistent directory is actually being created while installing slapd, however creating a directory in the root filesytem for no reason is a bug IMHO. Please change this behaviour by not creating the homedir when the openldap user is being created, or better, set the homedir to /var/run/slapd. I also attached a patch to fix some minor issues I experienced while using the Ubuntu slapd package: *) As mentioned in #489619 and #506317 which are duplicates of #427842, the default ACL (olcAccess) in the frontend configuration is lacking essential entries. For now #427842 is tagged as wishlist item, that's wrong, the current default configuration is defect and SHOULD be fixed. The two extra olcAccess lines suggested (and in this patch) has NOTHING to do with security or some kind. Please read the (last) comment in #489619 by Quanah Gibson-Mount for explanation (and realize he knows more about OpenLDAP or directory services in general most of us ever will...) *) The default config database is provided with an admin user (olcRootDN: cn=admin,cn=config) without a password (olcRootPW). It's best-practice to not use both of them anyway, and configure OpenLDAP ACL's with olcAccess attributes, but in the current state this entry is completely bogus and should be removed, or the package installer should ask for a password and provision the olcRootPW attribute ({SSHA} preferred). *) While playing with slapd and Corosync/Pacemaker cluster stuff, I discovered the slapd init script doesn' t have a status function. I'm trying to create a working OCF compatible script (with monitor stuff) but for now I'm using the default LSB init function for testing. The attached patch adds some simple status checking with LSB compatible exit codes which may be usefull for other purposes. Hardly a case of forgetting; the reports of nmbd failures only started coming in after a change in behavior in upstart, which Debian doesn't use, so the fix wasn't believed to be relevant to Debian. In hindsight, it makes sense that it would also affect NM-using Debian systems. The exact problem appears to also result in part from a behavior change in nmbd, and I've never been able to reliably reproduce this; I suspect an eglibc regression, but since I can't reproduce it to begin with, it's been hard to pin down. If only I could find the patch in LP, it could be added to the Debian package but that bug is...ahemquite hairy. I get gazillion informations about the people who are subscribed to the bug but no obvious point that says *this is the fix*. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2%3a3.4.0-3ubuntu5.2 and https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2%3a3.4.0-3ubuntu5.3 are the precise versions you want; this has been implemented differently for Lucid by condensing the if-up.d script and the init script to a single upstart job that handles this. Most users of kvm/qemu either don't use SDL at all (ie, they are using virt-manager, virsh, or Eucalyptus to launch VMs), and of the remaining users that do launch KVM from the command line and SDL, most of those are probably just using the default cirrus driver. Thus, I suspect that the affect users of this problem are a vocal minority. The emulated video card and the output type are orthogonal. You can just as easily be using VNC with -vga std as you can use SDL with the default cirrus. Any of combination of output type (sdl, vnc, or none) and emulated video card (cirrus (default), vmware and std-vga) is possible. Indeed, libvirt allows any of these combinations. vgabios has two reverse-dependencies in lucid: qemu-common and bochs. Has anyone regression-tested this for bochs? I suspect that the bochs package can possibly be dropped from the archive. I think qemu was the only user of bochs previously, and upstream QEMU has switched away from bochs to seabios and vgabios instead. This needs to be investigated a bit more (perhaps a post on ubuntu-devel, in case anyone else knows of what in Lucid might still require bochs. I see no reason to drop bochs. [Bug 406397] Re: init: job stuck with expect fork/daemon when parent reaps child
Hi... I got bitten by this bug earlier today. I was attempting to set 'autossh' to be respawned, via a new autossh.conf file. I copied the cron.conf file, and changed the exec line to the appropriate autossh command line, and left the rest the same. The mistake was that autossh doesn't fork into the background, but 'expect fork' was set. The outcome was that 'initctl stop autossh' and 'initctl start autossh' both hang, and I had to copy autossh.conf to autossh2.conf and delete the 'expect fork' line before I could get autossh to run. I can't get rid of the old autossh entry in 'initctl list', except possibly by rebooting. Since I'm remotely logged in, I don't want to do that unless I'm confident my connection is going to work... yay, catch-22. exec /usr/bin/autossh -M 81 -N -R 29:127.0.0.1:22 servername -- init: job stuck with expect fork/daemon when parent reaps child https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/406397 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 539086] Re: Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2 does not boot on Lucid
This still does not boot - I have tried Beta 1 and 04 April 2010 snapshot. However, Jaunty's live-usb works beautifully. Can somebody please take a look at this - this effectively means, we will not be able to use Lucid on any of our machine. In my previous mail, I have attached compressed /var/log after letting the computer sit for a few hours (it did eventually boot into the live- usb then). Please let me know how else can I help. -- Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2 does not boot on Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539086 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 513152] Re: Keyboard layout panel indicator ignores theme font color settings
IIRC, the issue is caused by 'toy' Cairo API usage which does not handle hinting settings and scales the label text down. The mentioned commit introduces proper font setup routine. [Bug 423489] Re: cannot set mountd port from nfs-kernel-server
Also, the flow in the code is fixed, at the beginning of /etc/init.d /nfs-kernel-server it should look like: DEFAULTFILE=/etc/default/nfs-kernel-server if [ -f $DEFAULTFILE ]; then . $DEFAULTFILE fi RPCNFSDCOUNT=8 RPCNFSDPRIORITY=0 RPCMOUNTDOPTS=-p 32771 -g NEED_SVCGSSD=no RPCSVCGSSDOPTS= PROCNFSD_MOUNTPOINT=/proc/fs/nfsd This will allow the sourcing of /etc/default/nfs-kernel-server first, then defining what you want here.
