Re: [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-15 Thread James Clemence
@G Steel: I agree!

I think it shouldn't be incomplete, several of us have tested upstream,
we know its not there, it wasn't in karmic, so perhaps this can be set
at high priority and then some proper in depth looking for the source of
this bug can be completed.

Subject: [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

I think my problem is:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/475429

I just leave visual effects off and now no more freezes. When I turn on
either Normal or Extra in System Preferences Appearance the keyboard
and mouse freeze. I can ssh in and reboot.

Shouldn't the status of this bug be HIGH and not incomplete? The
original poster did test a bunch in message #11.

Good luck!

Bug description:
Hello,

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel
Chipset, 4GB RAM) I get randomly freezes of the whole system. I can't
reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the
system making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without
freeze and sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let
me shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that
difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I
foun that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with
the notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi
network connection to my router is not interrupted.

[Bug 594456] [NEW] package flashplugin-installer (not installed) failed to install/upgrade:

2010-06-15 Thread Kam Chuan Yow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

While upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04, the following error messages were
shown:

01. ### Could not install

about it.

conflicting packages - not installing flashplugin-installer

At the end, the upgrade halted abruptly!!! The system can be re-booted
into 10.04 but flashplugin-nonfree has been a problem since.

The following 3 commands have been used to remove the flashplugin-
nonfree (10.0.1.218+really9.0.277.0ubuntu1) which was installed while
using 8.04.

# rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.prerm
# dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq flashplugin-nonfree
# dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq flashplugin-nonfree

Ref: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9314358postcount=6

After that, flashplugin-nonfree version 10.1.53.64ubuntu0.10.04.1 has
been installed using the apt-get command as shown below:

# apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

However, it seems that the installation has failed although no error was
displayed while running the above commands. Video clips from youtube.com
cannot be played for the time being.

yow

[Bug 593136] Re: Cheese choppy. Doesnt Create Video if more than 2 minutes.

2010-06-15 Thread Nastrafireblaze
Completed aforementioned tasks.

Tried twice. The first video (appeneded with chopiness in archive) was
extremely choppy throughout. I stopped it at about 3minutes.

The second video (appended with no-chopiness in archive) was not choppy
except for the short while 15 seconds of initial usage, after that the
video recorded fine until I stopped it at about 5minutes.

[Bug 591092] Re: package preview-latex-style 11.85-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2010-06-15 Thread era
Those zero-sized files are wrong and the cause of the problem, but I
don't know what's causing them to end up empty. There have been several
bug reports lately about empty postinst etc files but I have no idea
what causes this to happen. See for example bug #584021 and bug #582341
although those are tangential.

[Bug 563156] Re: [ATI Graphics][Lucid] laptop runs hot, shorter battery life, fan always on

2010-06-15 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Similar problem here with a Dell Inspiron 9200 with ATI graphics, and
it's about the same story as others above: The laptop's fan is on as
long as the machine is awake, regardless of total CPU load (which is
usually negligible), and the battery life seems unusually short (I'm
down to half charge in less than an hour). Battery life was
considerably better under Karmic (a full charge was good for 3-4 hours).

For me, this regression is the result of an upgrade from Karmic to Lucid
via Synaptic, rather than a full re-install. I had to use the
instructions at http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Fix-the-Big-and-
Ugly-Plymouth-Logo-in-Ubuntu-10-04-140810.shtml to fix the bootsplash
that broke during the upgrade. That How-To happens to include the
nomodeset boot option, which fixes resume-from-suspend for me as well
(Lucid fails to turn the backlight back on otherwise). I mention these
in case there is some connection between those settings and the power
consumption issue.

I am running the regular open-source radeon driver, and Hardware
Drivers gives me no option to install any other drivers (of any kind).

Since nobody is paying attention to this bug, and it is still a problem

difference is the name of the attached file. One is named meeting.txt

[Bug 594461] [NEW] simutrans crashes with segfault when disabling music

2010-06-15 Thread Nicholas Fechner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: simutrans

When starting simutrans, there is no sound and music. If i then disable

[Bug 594462] [NEW] libmemcached5 and other binary packages should replace, not conflict with libmemcached2

2010-06-15 Thread Clint Byrum
Public bug reported:

libmemcached5 is marked as conflicting with libmemcached2, but they
share no files and will not interfere with one another.

Likewise for libhashkit0 and libmemcachedutil0.

This prevents a user from having both packages on the system, and is a
blocker for getting the perl module Memcached::libmemcached into
universe for maverick, as it will depend on libmemcached2, not
libmemcached5.

[Bug 551965] Re: BIOS hang - Unable to boot after installation

2010-06-15 Thread Dennis van der Pool
I am having same problem after upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4. BIOS hang on
detecting drives. Have to remove drive and clean it using another system to be
able to boot the system again. I got first ISO of 10.4 when i got released.
Yesterday i tried reinstalling it with live cd and added
partman/alignment=cylinder to boot parameter just behind quiet splash --
but i still have the same problem :-(

2010-06-15 Thread drew212
Could you please generate an apport crash report for this? A crash report is
key for resolving your problem.
You can enable apport for one instance like this in the terminal:
sudo service apport start force_start=1

I am marking this invalid as apport will open a new bug when the crash
is generated. Please include any relevant information from this report
in the new bug report. If you cannot generate a crash report, you can
reset the status of this one to new and we will try something else.

Re: [Bug 593227] [NEW] feature request: add a root-path parameter

2010-06-15 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Στις 14-06-2010, ημέρα Δευ, και ώρα 20:35 +, ο/η Wouter Verhelst
έγραψε:
NBD has a virtual host feature that allows you to change the served
file based on (part of) the IP address of the client that's
 connecting.

That would indeed work for some use cases, but unfortunately fixed IP
addresses would be required, which isn't always an option.

I'd prefer that the client would be able to specify a name of an
export, with the server using the section name in the config file as
the name of the export, rather than having the ability to specify a
path; the latter would have some security ramifications that I'd
 prefer not to deal with.

I was thinking something like /etc/exports, with one entry per line,
which would make it easier for postinst/postrm scripts to handle. In
essence the two methods are the same except that the whole section is
in one line, and the full path is used as the section name - I can't
see any differences security-wise. But sure, the configuration file
format (or config.d directory if implemented) is not an issue at all.

Thank you very much,
Alkis

[Bug 161818] Re: firefox flash-plugin automatic installation fails on youtube

2010-06-15 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

  Problem occurs with:
  * Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
  * Ubuntu 9.04
  * Ubuntu Karmic, all updates installed

  1. From a fresh Ubuntu installation, go to http://www.youtube.com/.
  2. Go to any of the videos.

What happens: Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version
of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.
What should happen: Firefox's plug-in finder bar appears.

Sites like YouTube query firefox about the availability of the flash
plugin, and if not found, display fallback text (usually including a
link to Adobe's download page) instead of triggering the browser's
native embed behavior for uninstalled plug-ins. This is usually
implemented using the Adobe Flash Player Detection Kit
  http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/download/detection_kit/ and,
  more recently, SWFObject http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/.
SWFObject will be included in upcoming versions of Adobe Flash Catalyst
- and Adobe Flash Builder. and as of 1 October 2009, it was used by around
- 13% of Web site front pages sampled by Builtwith.
+ and Adobe Flash Builder, and since May 2009 it has consistently been
+ used by about 13% of the top 10 000 Web site front pages sampled by
+ Builtwith.
  http://trends.builtwith.com/?tag=javascripttech=b9f773e8-12b1-46ee-
  ab08-bafa6c8d0c6f

Ubuntu's plug-in finder bar works only for embed elements, and
therefore it is working for fewer and fewer Flash sites over time.

A simple solution might be to hack firefox to always provide the
information that the flash capability is present, even when the flash
plugin is not yet installed. Therefore, the site would provide the flash
object, and the automatic flash plugin installation would kick in.

I had the same problem as described by the majority -- unable to add my

setup -- less and except the fact that I had no debug messages displayed
when said issue appeared. This is most definitely not an user interface
issue as per original comment #26 states.

Thanks to comment #77 by Yuioup on 2010-06/09 has saved me!
Instantaneously started working 100% as expected upon executing those
two commands within a terminal. I would personally advise trying this
potential fix before enduring the mundane chore of compiling patching
from the source repositories and see if this works for you as well.

[Bug 594470] [NEW] Mozilla Firefox crashes, ubuntu session terminated, re-logon necessary

2010-06-15 Thread Johannes Koukouliatas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I'm using
- Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3
- Ubuntu 10.04

The error appeared after upgrading to ubuntu 10.04.

Reproduced following error couple of times, but not the only way to
trigger it.

1) opening www.map24.de (German route finder page)
2) filling in start and destination points, clicking on next (weiter)
3) after couple of seconds, black screen appears filled with following text
line: wlan10 error fetching interface information: device not found
4) the screen / lines appears for about 2-3 seconds
5) Ubuntu presents after some HD activity the usual login window, I can login
normally despite all previously active programs aborted

I use a T42 IBM Laptop without integrated WLAN device. I occasionally
use a USB WLAN device which is working pretty well without any crashes.
With same devices and Ubuntu 9.x I had no issues.

I first suspected JAVA and deactivated JAVA script in Mozilla, but error
appears again, just using the search bar (top right corner) to find
something in google.

[Bug 594469] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Memcached::libmemcached

2010-06-15 Thread Clint Byrum
Public bug reported:

Memcached::libmemcached is a perl wrapper around the C library
libmemcached. It can be used in place of a pure-perl library for greater
performance and features not found in the perl library. Many user

called Cache::Memcached::libmemcached.

[Bug 247571] Re: Text boxes with active autocomplete drop down swallows multimedia keyboard controls

2010-06-15 Thread Rune Juhl Jacobsen
I'm pretty sure that this isn't a problem with Firefox, but a problem
with Gnome instead, as multimedia key presses are also swallowed
whenever you have an open menu, no matter if it is inside an application
(File, Edit, View menus and so on), or the start menu or a right click
menu.

Reproducibility: always
Steps to reproduce:
1. Start a media player.
2. Play a track.
3. Open a menu of any sort.
4. Try any media control button, such as pause or volume up/down.
Expected: The track pauses/changes volume.
Actual: Nothing, the button has no effect.

I'd be tempted to say that this bug is yet another duplicate of bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/10905 .
A lot of duplicates have been reported, ie.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/243584 which has a
description that matches this one a bit better.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

[Bug 594472] [NEW] Can't select default Gnome keyboard layout different from the system default one

2010-06-15 Thread ElBastardo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

How to reproduce in 10.04 (previous releases work correctly):
1) During the installation select a default keyboard layout (e.g. USA)
2) In Gnome, add some local keyboard layout (CZ or something) and move it to
the top of the list to make it default
3) Logout a log in again, USA layout is selected by default

[Bug 530394] Re: gwibber claims my Facebook password is incorrect but the same password works on Facebook itself

2010-06-15 Thread Austin Vaughan
There are two problems here I have been having using gwibber 2.30.0.1 on
Ubuntu 10.04. Both of them have been experienced by other people,.

1. Since Saturday I have not been able to post anything. It worked fine on
Saturday, now it doesn't. You click send, and nothing happens.
2. After deleting my facebook account from gwibber in an attempt to set it up
again, gwibber would not let me add a facebook account to my list. After
entering my username and password, the Add button was simply not there.
3. After reinstalling gwibber and deleting the config files, I could add
facebook again, but I still could not post anything and the feed was bearing no
relationship to current events. This time, after clicking send, I get the
message telling me there was an authentication error.
Deleted the account from gwibber again, and now I'm back to the situation
where there is no Add button.

Can anyone help with this, or is this bug considered closed? If it is
solved, could someone please help me reproduce the solution? It doesn't
help if someone just says well it now works for me, therefore problem
solved.

[Bug 589074] Re: Missing package dependency gtk-sharp2

we don't put full dependencies on things like mono-devel and the gtk#
devel packages, because monodevelop can be used for non-gtk or non-mono
stuff. there's a rationale for a recommends or suggests though
