[Bug 579117] Re: Wireless blocks USB-Audio, leading to dropouts
Well, I'm also out of really good ideas, but if you have the time, I guess you just have to continue investigating and trying combinations of what causes high latencies and what don't. E g trying Karmic with a different kernel, trying a preemptive kernel, a mainline kernel, etc. If you find one kernel that works and one kernel that doesn't (and nothing else is changed), you can continue using git bisect to find the exact commit causing the error. I'm quite certain the error is kernel related. As for pulseaudio, if tsched=0 does not help, I don't think anything else will - but don't take my word for it, feel free to try whatever you want. -- Wireless blocks USB-Audio, leading to dropouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579117 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 198162] Re: GNOME Bug Report Tool missing arguments
I couldn't remember this discussion after a couple of years, but I was amused by the comment and depressed to see that after two (more) years things have NOT turned around. I still want alternatives to Microsoft's awful software, but the major change of the last few years is that Microsoft has apparently lost their drive to be the evil empire and Apple has taken over as the leading contender (though Google is showing increasing signs of evil ambitions and capabilities). Comment 1: I have basically given up on Ubuntu, though I am still using OLD versions on two machines. I have experimented with later versions on several machines, and Ubuntu has become less and less ready for prime time. I managed to avoid ever buying a Vista machine, Apple has dropped out of my consideration, but I increasingly doubt any acceptable alternatives will appear before I am obliged to buy a Windows 7 box... Right now Google's Chrome looks to be the best alternative, but I feel like I've wasted a LOT of time with Ubuntu, and that casts a shadow on all of the Linux alternatives. (My company uses RHEL, which I've never managed to like. If it was actually offered as an option on a machine, I'd probably take it over Windows--but so far it has not been competitive in the real-world market.) Comment 2: I think the REAL problem is Ubuntu's financial model doesn't provide sufficient push for regression testing against the pushes for the development of new features. The most serious problems I've encountered over the years are almost always breakage in old features. The problems with new features are annoying, but rarely show stoppers. Ergo, I suggest Ubuntu might be salvaged with an alternative funding model that supported MUCH more testing, especially boring old regression testing. Perhaps something like this: http://eco-epistemology.blogspot.com/2009/11/economics-of-small-donors- reverse.html In applying the model to Ubuntu's situation, I think that the project models should have substantial allocations for testing in their budgets --but the virtual shareholders would also become the highest-priority candidates to become testers. In other words, if you bought a share in a particular project, you could also volunteer as a tester at that time, and record your configuration. At that point it would be a bit of a lottery, but essentially the Ubuntu people would be picking testers to maximize coverage, and the winners would be paid for their testing work. The value paid for testing would probably be more than the cost of shares, so the winners would be happy and it would be yet another motivation to support a development project. I think the main advantage is that the projects would be buying testing from normal users--but perhaps that's because I think that the earliest users of most programs tend to be on the strange side or stranger. (The main risk might actually be a kind of gambling by people who think they have especially useful configurations for testing...) I still want more options, and I wouldn't mind a bit if the Ubuntu people could turn things around--but I'm not worrying about it at this point, and I even resent the loss of capabilities and increasing bugginess of newer versions... -- GNOME Bug Report Tool missing arguments https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/198162 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 596182] [NEW] Ugly Text Screens while booting, sometimes does not shut down
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 10.04 Kernel Linux 2.6.32-23-generic Gnome 2.30.0 Memory 3.4 GB Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.66Ghz When I boot Ubuntu, I get ugly text and no splash screen. The same is true when shutting down. Further, about 50% of the time when shutting down, the the computer will not turn off. It goes to a screen that offers me to continue booting, or to make calibrations on my graphics. I have attached a screenshot of what that screen looks like. When it gets to this screen, it seems the only way to actually shut down the computer is to force a power off by pressing and holding the power button on the computer. I reported this problem on the Ubuntu Forums, where I have included other screenshots of the problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472046page=2 Unfortunately, one of the suggested solutions, to use startupmanager, and turn off the show text option, and to turn on the show splashscreen check box has not resolved the problem. [Bug 572868] Re: Lucid Live CD/USB freezes shortly after start
I have the same problems on two of the 3 desktops in our household. Both the affected machines are i686, Core 2 Duo E8400 , 4GB RAM and GeForce 9600GT GPU, which run Karmic OK. I have tried the recommended workarounds without success. I also downloaded 10.04-855gm with an earlier Kernel, but still got the black screen on boot. Comments on some forums suggest that the problem appears to have been fixed in the Beta of Meerkat, so in the absence of a fix in Lucid it looks as if I will have less hassles if I soldier-on with Karmic until Meerkat is more mature. Given that we enjoy Ubuntu through the altruism of so many good folk world-wide, I think that it is a tad churlish to be critical of unexpected bugs like this. [Bug 78043] Re: udev stops pppd persist working
Hi David, Interestingly, the latest break hasn't been created by udev, it's been caused by upstart. The culprit is I think the solution (and this is consistent with how pppoeconf sets up the ppp interface) is not to mark ppp interfaces as 'auto'. Instead, create an upstart script in /etc/init/ that calls /etc/ppp/ppp_on_boot when eth0 comes up. For example: # ppponboot - configure ppp network devices # # This task causes ppp connections to be started on boot. description configure ppp devices start on net-device-added INTERFACE=eth0 task #the following is needed incase /var/run/network hasn't been created yet #this can happen due to upstart's aggressive startup ordering pre-start exec mkdir -p /var/run/network post-start exec /etc/ppp/ppp_on_boot -- udev stops pppd persist working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78043 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 591129] Re: Install Button not Working - nothing happens
This worked for me - it appears a policykit startup program was launching a KDE rather than a gnome version. The solution is: System/Preferences/Startup Applications Under the Startup Programs tab uncheck PolicyKit Authentication Agent. Click on Add to create a new startup program. In the Add Startup Program window enter the following in the Command: box - /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 In the Name: box give the new startup program a name -I called mine gnome Policy Kit. Click on save and have this as the new 'policykit startup program'. Everything works great with the latest kernel (2.6.32-22 #36). I've been running on the 2.6.31-21 kernel until this latest update. I don't know what's different, but previously uname -a returned a kernel version of 2.6.32-22 #33, and now it's 2.6.32-22 #36. [Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot
Thanks for all the posts of ps aux output after doing a 'sudo start rc- sysinit' after a bad boot. From the ps aux reports that I requested in #104 for when cupsd does not start, it appears that irqbalance, winbindd also are not starting for most people. Since we moved this bug from a cups bug to an upstart bug I see that: http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/543506 is very similar to this one. I am also posting a summary in the other bug that there are a lot of reports to analyze here. ** Changed in: upstart (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- CUPS and other system services not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It is very similar to this bug. I am posting a link here since there may be more useful information there. To summarize what I observe in both bugs: -services sometimes do not start on boot. irqbalance, winbindd, cupsd are the major ones. runlevel command will report 'unknown' -on some boots, all services will start ok. runlevel command will report 'N 2' -if you think you have it fixed, boot 10 times at least to see if you can get it to fail. -if you have a bad boot, 'sudo start rc-sysinit' seems to start the services that did not start. -- Some services not started on boot, runlevel returns unknown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/543506 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 596192] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] new libcairo2 1.9.8-rc fails to render correctly
Public bug reported: I have a fully updated Lucid-AMD-64 installation with an upgraded Compiz (0.8.6-0ubuntu1). I also use Emerald (0.7.2-0ubuntu4) decorator for compiz. Furthermore, I have upgraded my system with all the lucid packages of the PPA Xorg-Edgers-Crack-Pushers, including the new kernel (2.6.35-4.5), xserver (1.8.1.901+git20100613) and nvidia-current (256.29-0ubuntu1). Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UP4 Graphics card: NVidia GTX285 After upgrading the new libcairo2 (1.9.8-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid) I noticed some serious rendering issues. All special effects fails to render correctly, where there should appear highlighting or fading color blends: 1. Emeralds (vrunner 0.2) frame engine blends in the titlebar (especially middle blend) fails to render. Actually a white blend does not render at all, the whole area concerned turns totally white with no blend at all. 2. Emeralds frame/shadows in gnome panel or in application windows do not render at all. They disappear. 3. I have also noticed, using synaptic for instance, pressing the reload button, the loading bar fails to show blending colors. The upper area of the bar is completely white. The lucid libcairo2 (1.8.10-2ubuntu1) and maverick libcairo2 (1.8.10-4ubuntu1) do work OK. [Bug 592336] Re: Removal of aptitude from base installation
fixed links in bug description ** Description changed: Binary package hint: aptitude It has come to our attention that the developers want remove aptitude from the base installation again. Most of us that run a testing version use aptitude safe-upgrade, in order to not break the installation when upgrading new packages, especially when we've been notified of new packages that could cause severe breakage. I find aptitude with it's options is a very useful tool during testing, removing it will make the job a lot harder. NOTES ON THE DECISION (This is based on a conversation with Colin Watson on IRC and the references given) The initial rationale is basically size; approximately 2MB (which in the scope of things are very precious on the liveCD) will be gained by removing tasksel and aptitude. The initial reason why aptitude was included in ubuntu was that the desktop installer (ubiquity) depended on it, but now the desktop installer has been rewritten to not require it unless in particular cases, and hence it goes. The alternate install CD will still install aptitude and tasksel, since the debian-installer which is used in installation requires it. Likewise the server install of ubuntu will still include it (presumably also since it uses debian-installer) - This was part of the Maverick Spring Cleaning which was discussed during UDS-M and is specified here: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubu...pring-cleaning + This was part of the Maverick Spring Cleaning which was discussed during UDS-M and is specified here: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-m-spring-cleaning As Install tasksel and aptitude dynamically - More info here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoundationsT...SpringCleaning + More info here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoundationsTeam/Specs/MaverickSpringCleaning We could substantially reduce the size of the minimal seed by installing tasksel and aptitude dynamically, so that we don't end up with them on live-installed systems. We will still need to keep tasksel in the server seed.
