[Bug 603001] [NEW] Guest with user net can't access external network when host has static IP

2010-07-08 Thread Daniel White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

I have a wireless network device, so bridging is completely out of the
question. All I need is for external network access via user mode
networking for the guest machine. I could connect to the host machine
through 10.0.2.2, but couldn't connect to any machines external to the
host.

Reconfiguring the host device, which is wireless, to use DHCP
immediately solved the problem.

I'm pretty sure this started happening after I upgraded from 9.10 to
10.04, but I can't be sure. I usually have DHCP enabled, but there was
a period when I changed it to a static configuration. The other
possible change is wireless devices. I was using a card that used the
rt61pci driver but it has been particularly flaky. Instead I'm
currently using a card that uses the ar9170usb driver. I'm not entirely
certain whether this changes are related or whether this problem occured
before or after, so this could all be taken with a grain of salt.

[Bug 529004] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5 upgrade fails - cannot stop mysqld

2010-07-08 Thread Clint Byrum
Scott, can you try running 'mysql_upgrade -uroot -p' where is
the password you chose for your mysql root user. Please run this from
the command line, and paste its full output here in the bug report.

Also can you do a 'show create table mysql.db' and paste the output of
that?

[Bug 591423] Re: qemu -drive boot=on flag causes boot to hang.

Milestoning in Ubuntu is used by the release management in conjunction
with Target to release maverick, to identify milestone release
blockers... I'm not sure this one should be considered a blocker. If you
just intend to fix it by alpha3, you don't need to milestone it.

[Bug 603091] [NEW] Have an authenticated access for personnal backups

2010-07-08 Thread Arthur Lutz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: backuppc

For a multiuser setup with a kerberos authentication it would be really nice to
have a way of giving access to those users to their personnal backups.

So user paul would have access to /home/paul for example.

I couldn't find a bugtracker for the upstream of backuppc so I'm putting
it here.

[Bug 600908] Re: Spurious error during authorization

2010-07-08 Thread Aidan Furlan
Here is another user who experienced the same issue:

http://www.mail-archive.com/bacula-
us...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg17051.html

Like me this user found that passwords were not the problem, it was a
misconfiguration at the networking level causing this error.

The simple fix would be to update the error message to reflect the fact
that networking issues as well as wrong passwords can throw this error.
Alternatively, testing for a connection between the SD and FD in
authenticate.c prior to the cram_md5 tests would allow a distinction
between the two.

[Bug 602689] Re: Segmentation fault in libapache2-mod-php5 when calling methods

2010-07-08 Thread Scott Moser
I'm not able to reproduce this on maverick i386 system I tested on. That said,
the bug opener stated that he could only recreate on one system. To attempt
recreate I tried on a fresh ec2 instance:
$ sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5
$ vi /var/www/parta.php /var/www/partb.php
# as above, but adding an 'echo Done!\n;' at the end.

$ wget http://localhost/parta.php -O - -q
Done!

If we can't recreate this then it will be difficult to fix.

Could you please try getting a crash with debugging symbols available ?

[Bug 603192] [NEW] install of libapache2-mod-php5 may not result in enabled php

2010-07-08 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

On a fresh ec2 instance of maverick i386, I tried:
$ sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5

That went fine, ending with:
| Setting up apache2-mpm-prefork (2.2.15-5ubuntu1) ...
| * Starting web server apache2
| ...done.
| Setting up php5-common (5.3.2-1ubuntu5) ...
| Setting up libapache2-mod-php5 (5.3.2-1ubuntu5) ...
|
| Creating config file /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini with new version
| * Reloading web server config apache2
| ...done.
| Processing triggers for libc-bin ...
| ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

However, php files were not being processed until a subsequent apache
restart (or reload).

I suspect the problem is a race condition in /etc/init.d/apache2.
In this install case, apache is started, and very soon after the configuration
is reloaded.

I was able to recreate the failure outside of install by:

$ sudo sh -xc 'service apache2 stop;
  sleep 3;
  a2dismod php5;
  service apache2 start;
  a2enmod php5;
  service apache2 reload;'

[Bug 603091] Re: Have an authenticated access for personnal backups

2010-07-08 Thread Scott Moser
I'm marking this wishlist and 'incomplete'. As I understand the
request, you're hoping for new function in the backupppc project.
Ubuntu isn't likely to add such function on its own.

Please bring up this feature request with the upstream. It seems you
should be able to do so via the mailing lists described at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/backuppc/support . It seems the -users
mailing list at https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_name
=backuppc-users is fairly active.

Thank you for taking the time to open a bug.

[Bug 603211] [NEW] Apache fails to start after reboot due to missing /var/run/apache2 direcotry when ssl is enabled

2010-07-08 Thread timdaman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

For some reason after I rebooted my apache2 server the /var/run/apache2
directory disappeared. This directory is needed to support mod_ssl which
makes use of it to store SSLSessionCache and SSLMutex. Apache2
cannot be started with ssl enabled and the /var/run/apache2 is directory
missing. It will log the following message

[Thu Jul 08 00:15:15 2010] [error] (2)No such file or directory: Cannot create
SSLMutex with file `/var/run/apache2/ssl_mutex'
Configuration Failed

The solution is to recreat this directory. I am using the following code
stub

[ -d /var/run/apache2 ] || mkdir /var/run/apache2

There are several solutions to this issue

1) Ensure /var/run/apche2 doesn't get deleted on reboot
2) Ensure startup scripts verify /var/run/apche2 exists and create it if missing
3) In /etc/apache2/mods-available/ssl.conf adjust SSLSessionCache and
SSLMutex to store these in a more permanent location.

I also have run into this issue while using the OCF startup script
included with the heartbeat package.

[Bug 603001] Re: Guest with user net can't access external network when host has static IP

2010-07-08 Thread Scott Moser
I think I can reproduce this here on maverick, but would like some more
information on exactly how you set things up.
a.) How did you change to a static configuration exactly? Ie, did you do
this through network-manager or through /etc/network/interface
b.) Are you sure networking was broken or just DNS ?

When I set up static networking in network manager over a wireless
connection, dns didn't seem to be working properly from the guest.
However, I could still reach hosts by IP address. I don't believe this
is a wireless issue.

[Bug 603285] Re: Please convert init script to upstart.

2010-07-08 Thread Colin Watson
The job itself looks OK, although I have a few related questions:

Shouldn't you be using dh_installinit to install the job and deal with
migrating the old conffile? Simply dropping the new job in place and
removing the call to dh_installinit is generally not the correct thing
to do.

The old init script has a few specialised warts that you don't seem to
have preserved. Obviously a lot of it goes away with Upstart, but I
think the inetd.conf check (even though it's clunky) is probably worth
preserving. What about the ntp-wait gubbins? I can't think of an easy
way to do start on started ntpd but only if it's installed in Upstart,
so you may have to preserve that too for the moment.

[Bug 603211] Re: Apache fails to start after reboot due to missing /var/run/apache2 direcotry when ssl is enabled

2010-07-08 Thread Stefan Fritsch
That's strange. /usr/sbin/apache2ctl should contain mkdir -p
/var/run/apache2 and the init script should only call apache2ctl. Can
you check that? And if apache2 failed to start after a boot, you should
be able to restart it (using the init script or apache2ctl) without
creating the directory.

Maybe something is still cleaning /var/run while apache is already
starting.

[Bug 603363] [NEW] sshd never stops, prevents umount of /usr partition

2010-07-08 Thread Rob Donovan
Public bug reported:

Under Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, sshd is an upstart job controlled by
/etc/init/ssh.conf This file provides for start and stop as follows:

start on filesystem
stop on runlevel S

At shutdown or reboot, therefore, sshd is not stopped.

Since sshd is in /usr/sbin/sshd and also accesses lib files in /usr/lib
this means that

/etc/rc0.d/S40umountfs

cannot successfully umount /usr at shutdown when /usr is on its own
partition.

This definitely leads to umount reporting errors in the shutdown console
messages.

It may also lead to fsck running on reboot and problems with mountall...
I can't say for certain yet as I am also having problems umounting /var,
possibly due to a power failure, which is what led me to notice and
investigate these messages.

My guess is that when sshd was a System V init process, it was killed by
the killall5 process in /etc/rc0.d/S20sendsigs. Under Lucid sshd has
been made an upstart job and as such is exempt from the killall5 and so
needs to be stopped explicitly.

I admit I am by no means an expert on upstart or sshd, but the fix
appears to me to be to modify /etc/init/ssh.conf to read

stop on runlevel [!2345]

[Bug 586546] Re: Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server

2010-07-08 Thread Timothy R. Chavez
Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party.

How would this be achieved?

If it's a matter of putting 'exec /usr/bin/byobu-launcher' into
.bash_profile, I have at least one concern that is security related.
Based on my experience w/ byobu-launcher, it will either create a new
session or attach you to an existing one. This is where the problem
lies, IMO. Based on this methodology, I think making byobu the default
session manager will make Ubuntu servers more attractive targets for
would-be attackers.

For example:

I log in, 'exec /usr/bin/byobu-launcher' creates a session, I su to root
(why would I do this!?), and then I disconnect without explicitly
exiting the session (e.g. I close a window, I experience power failure,
etc). Anyone with access to my user account effectively has access to
the root user as well because when they log in as me, byobu-launcher
will attach them to the existing session which is currently sitting in a
root shell. Even if they don't gain root access this way, byobu has
definitely made it easier for them to snoop on the user by allowing them
to share the same session. Do I have this correct or am I completely
off base?

I think it would be much better if /usr/bin/byobu-launcher re-authorized
the login user by forcing them to re-authenticate the effective user
when attaching to a session in which the effective user differs from the
login user... if that makes sense.

The other concern I have has to do w/ automation. I could imagine some
organization has written a set of expect scripts (why!?) that among
other things, log into systems, perform some tasks, and then log out

f...@localhost:/home/foo# logout
bash: logout: not login shell: use `exit'

It's a relatively simple fix / workaround, but annoying none-the-less.

[Bug 586546] Re: Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server

2010-07-08 Thread Malcolm Scott
Re #14 (Dustin Kirkland):

Thanks; ssh -t server bash is a workaround I had somehow failed to
notice. I suggest that it should be documented somewhere very obvious
if byobu becomes enabled by default though.

Re #16 (Timothy R. Chavez):

Anyone with access to my user account effectively has
access to the root user as well because when they log
in as me, byobu-launcher will attach them to the existing
session which is currently sitting in a root shell.

Good point in that byobu does effectively subvert the per-tty tickets of
sudo: a byobu session will contain a persistent tty and thus sudo
tickets will be shared amongst separate ssh connections.

However I have never quite been convinced by sudo's security model in
this regard (and this is equivalent to the scenario you present where a
root shell is left open inside byobu): if someone gains access to a
sysadmin's personal account, it is a simple matter for the attacker to
surreptitiously install hooks such that the next time the sysadmin
elevates to root (via sudo, or su, or anything else) the attacker
elevates to root too.

So in my opinion byobu bypasses a bogus security feature... maybe this
makes things slightly easier for the attacker but not considerably so.

The other concern I have has to do w/ automation. I
could imagine some organization has written a set of
 expect scripts (why!?)

I echo the (why!?) -- running expect on a shell is pretty bizaare and
not something I would worry about. Shell scripts are a much saner
approach and if invoked sensibly, e.g.

  ssh u...@host some-remote-script.sh

or even like

  ssh u...@host some-local-script.sh

byobu will not be invoked as bash will not be running interactively and
so .bash_profile will not be sourced.

(NB: these opinions are entirely mine and I certainly don't speak for
the byobu maintainers or Ubuntu.)

Also, the Ubuntu patches add an Upstart file to the package as well,

[Bug 599255] Re: dmraid fails to read promise RAID sector count larger than 32-bits

2010-07-08 Thread Danny Wood
Hmmm, that is interesting.
Both MBRs have the same structure, which means the offset is correct.

I can see one issue though.

In the windows MBR the sector size is listed as 0x7800 = 2147481600
sectors. The normal block size is 512 bytes so 2147481600 x 512 =
1099510579200 = 1TB (This is what Gparted is reading)

In the Linux MBR the sector size is listed as 0xE9D6 = 4294961622
sectors. Multiplying by the normal block size 4294961622 x 512 =
2199020350464 = 2TB.

Obviously there is a difference between the MBR block sizes, I think for
some unknown reason Microsoft is using a larger sector size which
shouldn't be allowed. The 512 byte limit is the limit of the MBR system.

I never rely on Microsoft partitioning tools as they have a very bad
reputation and history. Its best to do all your partitioning with one
program so that the structure stays consistent. I normally use gparted.
With the NTFS partition you created in Ubuntu is the same partition then
visible in windows?

Anyway you do need to use gpt partitioning to use large volumes like
this. In gparted can you create a gpt partition structure and create the
same NTFS volume and see if it is visible in windows? (In Gparted do
Device - New Partition Structure. Click advanced and change from msdos
to gpt)

2010-07-08 Thread Volkodav
Hi Bryce! You may close this bug as solved. After more testing I
found out the problem was the faulty USB cord, which on this camera is
not built in and has a mini USB connector. Using the cord from my
Blackberry 8830 resolved the issue. Sorry for the inconvenience. Hard to
believe sometimes that brand new products come with that type of
problems. It is not HD capable in linux but this is beyond the scope of
this bug.

[Bug 599255] Re: dmraid fails to read promise RAID sector count larger than 32-bits

2010-07-08 Thread Danny Wood
Oh dear.

It seems this version of dmraid won't handle gpt!
So you may be a little stuck with using partitions of that size.

There is a thread here where someone has made a patch:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1369224
I will have a look at it later to see if I can incorporate it into my dmraid in
my ppa!

Scott, can you try running 'mysql_upgrade -uroot -p' where is
the password you chose for your mysql root user. Please run this from
the command line, and paste its full output here in the bug report.

Also can you do a 'show create table mysql.db' and paste the output of
that?

[Bug 599255] Re: dmraid fails to read promise RAID sector count larger than 32-bits

2010-07-08 Thread Danny Wood
I have done some further digging and it seems that kpartx can read the gpt
partition table from dmraid.
(sudo apt-get install kpartx)

Usage:
kpartx -a /dev/mapper/pdc_cdgjdcefic

Use that command once you have booted or created the gpt structure and
you should then have the /dev/mapper/X block devices. This is a bit of
an ugly hack but it might be a workaround until dmraid can read gpt.

Re: [Bug 602597] Re: Banshee selects next track according to current view

2010-07-08 Thread Chow Loong Jin
On Wed, 07 Jul 2010 21:58:59 -
Timo Laine 602...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:

Many thanks for the thoughtful comment, Chow Loong Jin. Although I
disagree with the idea, I am happy to hear that at least some thought
has been given to it. I will consider discussing the matter on the
mailing list, but just for the sake of completeness, I will write a
 short reply here as well.

What you call counter-intuitive I consider intuitive and vice versa,
so that is of course something to discuss; I do accept that we are not
talking about a straightforward bug here and that the invalid status
is therefore correct. By the way, I noticed that Apple in their
iTunes have decided on a third option: stop playing tracks altogether
if the user has changed the track view. I did not realize this
before, and it has made me reconsider some aspects of my opinion.
Generally, although not always, Apple gets these things right.

Banshee highlights in bold the playlist Banshee is playing from. The
selected playlist is the one that is displayed, however.

I guess I would be happy with the way Banshee works if it was possible
to program at least the play queue just to keep on advancing while I
browsed the other tracks. (This is what iTunes does as well.) But it
seems that the play queue has several other bugs, one of which I have
already reported and another one that I just noticed and will report
as soon as I understand it. The reason I stopped using the play queue
was because it behaved in an unpredictable way, and I have not even
been able to understand even how it should work, not to mention how it
actually does work. I will take the matter to other forums (and other
bug reports) so that I may find at least one way to use Banshee
 without problems.

The Play Queue's intended behaviour is to play things in a queue, in
the order that they are enqueued, after which it should jump back to
the playlist it was playing from before the queue was populated. You
may configure the play queue to automatically populate itself based on
certain criteria, though.

I have noticed certain reports of erratic behaviour of the Play Queue,
but never have experienced any of them myself. Please link the reports
you mentioned here.

P.S. This really isn't what I call a short reply ;-)

This bug affects GTK's OpenDialog, SaveDialog and SelectDirectoryDialog.

How to reproduce: Open Gedit, click 'Open File'. Select any file and
move it to left panel (where bookmarks are placed). It will be
bookmarked. But: Nautilus supports only bookmarks for directories, not
for files! And the 'remove' button is disabled (in dialog).

2010-07-08 Thread Thierry Carrez
Milestoning in Ubuntu is used by the release management in conjunction
with Target to release maverick, to identify milestone release
blockers... I'm not sure this one should be considered a blocker. If you
just intend to fix it by alpha3, you don't need to milestone it.

** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu)
Milestone: maverick-alpha-3 = None

** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu)

[Bug 602885] Re: when i try to sync the ubuntu one directory, throw a error

2010-07-08 Thread Mitch Towner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 368626 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368626

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug 368626, so it is being marked as such. Please look at
the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you
can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug.
Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in
the other report. Please continue to report any other bugs you may find.

The issue was non UTF-8 compliant filenames in one or more of the
files/folders in your ubuntuone folder. This is a known issue. The
workaround is to keep the file names folder names UTF-8 compliant
until this issue is resolved. An example of a non UTF-8 compliant
filename is Danish characters ø, æ and å.

You can find invalid filenames using the following script:
http://people.canonical.com/~roman.yepishev/ubuntuone-scripts/utf8
-filename-check.py

** Changed in: ubuntuone-client (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Confirmed

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 368626
   We should support utf8-invalid filenames

RE: [Bug 508452] Re: wnck-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-07-08 Thread Albert Spijkers

hello All,

I will burn a new DVD from the latest version when available and test
for you with pleasure!

Can you tell me if this will be possible within the coming days, or is
there a release schedule for the complete version of Ubuntu. I used the
32 bits version!

Friendly greetings,

Albert

[Bug 600158] Re: After upgrading to firefox 3.6.6 flash plugin crashes

2010-07-08 Thread Helmut
A question to the packages.
On your Ubuntu Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS installation, we have these packages installed:

firefox 3.6.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2
firefox-3.0 3.6.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2
firefox-branding 3.6.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2

ii flashplugin-nonfree 10.0.1.218+really9.0.277.0ubunt
ii libflash-mozplugin 0.4.13-9ubuntu1
ii libflash0c2 0.4.13-9ubuntu1

Are these the most recent for Hardy or do you use any special ppa
backports?

2010-07-08 Thread Nishihama Kenkowo

visible in windows?
Previously, as written.

on Raid array1, Visible,I can use/read/write NTFS which was created by ubuntu
in windows. no problem.Interoperability,each other,ubuntu and windows/XP/7.

on Raid array2, I can not know partitons. It was one RAW partition in Windows.

[Bug 595650] Re: After the last updates HP printer stopped working

2010-07-08 Thread floid
@Till Kamppeter:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gscan2pdf/+bug/602560

It takes this bug to trigger that behavior in gscan2pdf, and without
realizing the cause it made scanning look broken after backing out the
bad libusb. So worth documenting here while reporting there. :)
