Hi all, I upgraded from 9.10, latest patch status, to 10.04 via update-manager. It's a virtual machine, powered by VMware Workstations 7.1 hosted on a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Ubuntu 10.04. - Upgrade procedure runs flawless, except that the upgrade procedure didn't recognize that there is already Grub2 installed. After I selected Keep current configuration..., I got a message that it could be that the actual grub configuration won't be able to handle the installation. However the system was booting fine - no errors etc. - I tried to recompile the VMware Tools, but there I got the first time the message regarding to the mtrr. - I re-installed the VMware Tools (that's without compiling) and it seems that the VMware Tools since then working fine. - But in /var/log/dmesg I found this: [0.00] MTRR variable ranges enabled: [0.00] 0 base 00 mask 00C000 write-back [0.00] 1 disabled [0.00] 2 disabled [0.00] 3 disabled [0.00] 4 disabled [0.00] 5 disabled [0.00] 6 disabled [0.00] 7 disabled [0.00] PAT not supported by CPU. [Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change
Sorry guys, some more information. Having just today re-checked it out, I can advise that for Ubuntu and LinuxMint, you also need gstreamer LAME plugins etc installed, most easily achieved by adding ubuntu-restricted-extras, which I am in the habit of always doing, if only to get MicroSoft Core Fonts installed, to ease cross-platform interoperation. For the real techies amongst you, gst-inspect lame will then lead you on to the LAME plugin commands that are applicable to that specific implementation of Linux LAME, so have fun ! -- Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in fglrx-kernel-source. When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. Enter chroot. 2. # vi /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-premount/udhcp and comment the line 151 which says chmod +x /tmp/dhcp-script.sh. 3. # update-initramfs -u 4. [Bug 604283] [NEW] network servers do not listen on 127.0.1.1
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ifupdown release: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (but probably all releases back to Hardy and forward to Maverick) package: ifupdown: Installed: 0.6.8ubuntu29 Since upgrading my systems to lucid and cleaning up the configurations, I've noticed strange behaviour where client tcp or udp sessions to local tcp/ip servers have timed out even though the servers were running and netstat showed they were listening on all interfaces. Wireshark traces showed that successful connections went to 127.0.0.1, while any connection attempt to 127.0.1.1 would fail. The systems are fully controlled by NetworkManager offtopica long and painful story!/offtopic and so /etc/network/interfaces contains only two lines: auto lo iface lo inet loopback This minimal configuration is not only highly recommended to avoid wierd behaviour with NetworkManager, but also to avoid problems with upstart (e.g. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ifupdown/+bug/497299). All the other network interfaces are managed by NM. In the old days, a typical /etc/hosts file would define all the local hostnames as follows: 127.0.0.1 myhostname.localdomain myhostname localhost.localdomain localhost For several releases (back as far as Hardy), ubuntu installations have been creating a more sophisticated version of the hosts file (presumably because of http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=316099), e.g. 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 myhostname.mydomain myhostname This modern variant allows the system to always resolve its own hostname and canonical name, even when there is no external network. It appears to work really well... e.g. ping hostname and ping localhost both succeed. hostname and hostname -f return the expected values. (note: I don't fully understand why ping hostname actually works - perhaps because the class A 127.0.0.0 subnet has been defined for ever as a loopback subnet?). The problem comes when a local client tries to connect to a local server... a well-behaved server will listen on all available network interfaces, e.g. br...@myhostname:~$ netstat -ln | grep 53 tcp0 0 10.1.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp0 0 192.168.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:530.0.0.0:* LISTEN udp0 0 10.1.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* udp0 0 192.168.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* udp0 0 127.0.0.1:530.0.0.0:* ... so, when a client tries to connect to the local server (in my not very realistic example you would have to edit /etc/resolv.conf to point to myhostname instead of the default localhost), the nslookup connection would never be received by the local bind server and so will eventually time out. If we are to keep the new style hosts file structure (and I think we should), then we MUST ensure that local servers are able to access all available interfaces, including BOTH of the loopback addresses mentioned in the hosts file, so we need to define an additional interface for the myhostname loopback address. This can be easily demonstrated by defining a second (virtual) address for the lo interface: sudo ifconfig lo:0 127.0.1.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 Stop the server and it will discover the extra interface when it is restarted: br...@myhostname:~$ netstat -ln | grep 53 tcp0 0 10.1.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp0 0 192.168.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp0 0 127.0.1.1:530.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:530.0.0.0:* LISTEN udp0 0 10.1.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* udp0 0 192.168.252.115:53 0.0.0.0:* udp0 0 127.0.1.1:530.0.0.0:* udp0 0 127.0.0.1:530.0.0.0:* Of course, this circumvention will only last until the next reboot. The solution can be made permanent by updating the /etc/networking/interfaces file to automatically bring up both loopback interfaces early in the boot process: # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # automatically bring up both these interfaces at boot (ifup -a == all) auto lo lo:0 # The standard loopback network interface iface lo inet loopback # another loopback interface for that pesky dual loopback hosts file iface lo:0 inet static address 127.0.1.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 I do not know if there is a more elegant solution to the same problem

[Bug 604252] Re: system freeze before entering suspend
To gather more informations, you shouldn't run pm-suspend in a graphical terminal. Instead, switch to VT1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and run the following commands: (without the quotes) setfont /usr/share/consolefonts/Uni1-VGA8.psf.gz sudo pm-suspend This will enable a smaller font for the terminal, so more messages will appear on the screen. [Bug 604288] [NEW] Lucid Lynx upstart 0.6.5-6 not starting services
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: upstart Recent upgrade from Karmic (9.10) to Lucid (10.04) - server, 64 bit version. Upstart services are not starting at boot. These include vsftpd and mysqld. I also cannot start them manually using the start command such as sudo start mysql. No output is returned on the console and I do not know which log files to check to see what is going on. if I run apt-cache policy upstart, I get upstart: Installed: 0.6.5-6 Candidate: 0.6.5-6 Version table: *** 0.6.5-6 0 If I run: initctl list no output is returned on the console which leads me to assume that upstart is starting no services. many .conf files exist in the /etc/init/ directory so they should be started by upstart and they should be returned by initctl list, right? If this is a different error, please direct me to some good error logs to start tracking it down. I tried reinstalling upstart, but this did not fix the problem. I also tried reinstalling several of the applications. [Bug 540941] Re: [NEW] Sync qgis 1.4.0+12730-3 (universe) from Debian testing (main)
It is the first time I use dpatch - so hope I did it correctly. I included the patch of Jürgen (BTW: do I understand it correctly that this only applies when the other qt 4.7 changes are made. [Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
Maybe I am starting to figure out something... I've got a dual monitor configuration (not xinerama) and, since i installed the second monitor, this bug we're talking about always happened on the left one (the principal). Interestingly the icons on top right are not the same: wireless is present only in the left monitor, the email and the audio icon only on the right. more interestingly some of the icons are duplicated, as the shutdown button and the session indicator button. 1) Most of the times I encounter this bug the shutdown button disappears and the session indicator appears duplicated. 2) Most of the times the shut down button is not disappeared, the session indicator one appears corrupted. 3) In this precise moment my right screen icons are regular; on my right (principal) screen all the icons are on their place but the session indicator. It is duplicated, visible and working on the right screen, not visible yet working on the left one. Concluding, I firmly believe the problem of the visual corruption relies in the session indicator applet (which may explain why previous ubuntu versions are not affected by this bug) it may sound complicated, so I am adding a couple of screenshots... ** Attachment added: Left / Right session indicator http://launchpadlibrarian.net/51727986/schermata.jpg -- visual corruption affecting several panel applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
