[Bug 606375] Re: Racoon daemon script is missing a newline
Hi Leo, thanks for reporting this bug. Does the racoon daemon actually start? The init script is running with 'set -e', which means if any commands return with a status not 0, meaning I ran ok then the init script will exit. So it would make sense that the 'start-stop-daemon' would return with an exit code if it wasn't able to start racoon, and then it wouldn't be able to 'echo .'. Thanks. ** Changed in: ipsec-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: ipsec-tools (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- Racoon daemon script is missing a newline https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606375 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ipsec-tools in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 606375] Re: Racoon daemon script is missing a newline
Hi Clint. Thanks for your answer. I spent all the afternoon checking my configuration and starting racoon manually. And indeed there was an IP that wasn't answering properly but now it's fixed. I've just seen your message and tried the script at init.d again and it printed the . and the newline. So the problem was probably, as you said, that my wrong configuration prevented racoon to start. Testing it further, if I do /etc/init.d/racoon start twice, the first time the daemon will start and will print the new line. The second time it will fail because it's already running, but no error message is given and no newline will be printed. The problem seems to be in the --quiet option passed to start-stop-daemon. If I remove it I get: elo...@tangamandapio-laptop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/racoon start Starting IKE (ISAKMP/Oakley) server: racoon/usr/sbin/racoon already running. elo...@tangamandapio-laptop:~$ The script seems to be assuming that the error, the . and the newline will be printed by start-stop-daemon, but the --quiet option prevents it. Now, the quiet option is probably there for some reason, and I'm not sure if it's a bug. So I don't know what's next :) Thanks again, pura vida. ** Changed in: ipsec-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New ** Summary changed: - Racoon daemon script is missing a newline + if racoon daemon fails to start no error message is printed and newline is missing -- if racoon daemon fails to start no error message is printed and newline is missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606375 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ipsec-tools in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 590275] Re: ssh init script doesn't use the /etc/default/ssh file
This is not just a wishlist. The package as it is now breaks expected behaviour (the one you get after 15 years of using /etc/init.d style startup scripts) and is not properly documented in the obvious places (README.Debian, for example), with only a mention of this new behaviour buried in changelog.Debian.gz. Furthermore, and most importantly, the daemon behaves differently if you start it with old style init scripts, or with new style upstart commands: # cat /etc/default/ssh | grep -v '#' SSHD_OPTS='-p 11210' SSHD_OOM_ADJUST=-17 # service ssh start ssh start/running, process 23950 # lsof -n | grep LISTEN | grep ssh sshd 23950 root3u IPv4 24579273 0t0 TCP *:ssh (LISTEN) sshd 23950 root4u IPv6 24579275 0t0 TCP *:ssh (LISTEN) # service ssh stop ssh stop/waiting # /etc/init.d/ssh start * Starting OpenBSD Secure Shell server sshd [ OK ] # lsof -n | grep LISTEN | grep ssh sshd 23983 root3u IPv4 24589208 0t0 TCP *:11210 (LISTEN) sshd 23983 root4u IPv6 24589210 0t0 TCP *:11210 (LISTEN) This means that someone changing the configuration and restarting the daemon the old way will not find the daemon listening on the inteded port after a reboot. The old style startup script should be modified to output a message urging the user to change his habit to upstart commands. The /etc/default/ssh file should be modified to include a prominent warning that the file itself is deprecated and not used by upstart anymore. The package as it is now may cause a machine to become unreachable if an external firewall is configured to allow a certain non-standard port, while the daemon starts listening on 22 because /etc/default/ssh is not used anymore. Colin, I did more tests and here's another issue: sshd is stopped, and the 2 config files have these contents: # grep -v '#' /etc/default/ssh SSHD_OPTS='-p 12345' SSHD_OOM_ADJUST=-17 # tail -1 /etc/init/ssh.conf exec /usr/sbin/sshd -p 11210 # service ssh start ssh start/running, process 30569 # ps ax | grep sshd 30569 ?Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -p 11210 # /etc/init.d/ssh start * Starting OpenBSD Secure Shell server sshd [ OK ] # ps ax | grep sshd 30569 ?Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -p 11210 so far, this is the expected behaviour. Now I stop again the daemon, and start it again, but this time with the old style init script first # /etc/init.d/ssh start * Starting OpenBSD Secure Shell server sshd [ OK ] # ps ax | grep sshd 31604 ?Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -p 12345 # service ssh start ssh start/running, process 31614 # ps ax | grep sshd 31604 ?Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -p 12345 31614 ?Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -p 11210 Result: 2 daemons running, on different ports. [Bug 606715] [NEW] Logfile defintions wrong after changes to logfile rotation in Ubuntu Lucid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: logwatch Hi, as mentioned in the release notes for Ubuntu 10.04 (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Syslog%20upgrade), the latest rotated logfile receives the extension .1, whereas in previous releases it was .0. Many of the logfile definitions in /usr/share/logwatch/{default,dist}.conf/logfiles are wrong because of this: default.conf: $ grep '^LogFile.*.0$' * daemon.conf:LogFile = daemon.log.0 kernel.conf:LogFile = kern.log.0 maillog.conf:LogFile = mail.log.0 secure.conf:LogFile = auth.log.0 syslog.conf:LogFile = syslog.0 dist.conf: maillog.conf:LogFile = mail.log.0 messages.conf:LogFile = messages.0 Due to this, logwatch reports contain only half the truth. [Bug 541862] Re: Random freezes (karmic)
I get random freezes on an everex cloudbook with karmic. (1.2ghz amd, 512mb ram, swap is default from clean install, whatever that is). Sometimes I can be up and running for hours, doing cpu heavy stuff (google chrome with multiple tabs, last.fm player, terminal, synaptic all going), then is suddenly freezes. Other times, I can be doing relatively nothing (surfing file system with cd in terminal, perusing applications menu), or even doing nothing at all, and it just freezes. Now, by freeze, I mean the system no longer responds to anything I do, any input from mouse (touchpad) or keyboard. Oddly, it will continue to be doing stuff (still playing music I can hear, for instance, or once I had the gnome-system-monitor running, and could sit here and watch the cpu/mem/swap graphs moving, but could not illicit any response via keyboard or mouse). Sometimes the machine fails even to respond to holding the power button, so the only way I can shut it down is to yank the power chord and battery. I don't believe this is a hardware issue, since it did not do this with hardy herron. I have disabled compiz, ubuntuone, maximus, and a whole lot of other unnecessary garbage. Really, considering I needn't even be doing anything, this doesn't seem related to resource use levels, anyway. Currently, the little machine has xubuntu-desktop (all ubuntu-netbook-remix crap removed), but it was doing the same with the ubr/gnome interface, anyway. I thought xfce, removal of maximum, ubuntuone, etc., might lighten the load and resolve, but no. I added acpi=off to my kernel line in grub2, having read that doing so might resolve, but, still no joy. It can and will lock up in an xterm only session, even (no wm or de), even, for instance, by pressing ctrl-mod-f1 during boot to get a root prompt. I am unable to identify any pattern/cause for the freezes. I'm a bit lost. The same machine had the same (and worse) issues with lucid, so I backpedaled to karmic, but still freezing. Like I mentioned, no such issues running hardy herron. -- Random freezes (karmic) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541862 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks. ** Changed in: ipsec-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: ipsec-tools (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- Racoon daemon script is missing a newline https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606375 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 603283] Re: useradd doesn't create /home/user_name directory
On Fri, 2010-07-16 at 20:03 +, David Sugar wrote: Thank you for this report. I can understand there are differences in distros sometimes. The default configuration for Debian is to not create the home directory. You have to explicitly use the -m option to do so. Curiously, the question of whether to automatically create the home directory is not part of the defaults (/etc/defaults/useradd) as far as I can see. Also, the -d option by itself is not quite what it seems. I note this from the changelog: - debian/patches/459_better_document_useradd_-d Better document, in useradd.8, that the home_dir specified with -d is not created if it does not exist Closes: #154996 And: - useradd requires the -m option to make it create a home directory if one does not exist, closes: #39581 So this specific behavior was decided upon in Debian. It is possible, for different reasons, Fedora chose a different default behavior in this respect. In any case, I think the package maintainer should now have enough info to understand if this needs to be changed, better documented, or left alone. Thank you for your reply. Essentially you mean that the default behaviour of useradd under Ubuntu is the -M option, while in Fedora it is the -m option. I am currently reading a Linux book and I considered it a bug. Another thing which I find bothersome, is the fact that the default shell assigned by useradd is /bin/sh instead of /bin/bash, while under X.Org, Ubuntu's Users management assigns /bin/bash by default to new users. I consider this as an inconsistency. In summary, I think that useradd should create the home directory as the default behaviour, and provide the same default shell as its GUI counterparts for consistency.
** Changed in: ipsec-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New ** Summary changed: - Racoon daemon script is missing a newline + if racoon daemon fails to start no error message is printed and newline is missing -- if racoon daemon fails to start no error message is printed and newline is missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606375 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 606583] Re: I propose to increase the default size of icons in the Dolphin
According to the Dolphin developer most people seem to like having a lot of icons instead of icons that rip your eyes out to play tennis with them [1]. I personally do however also like them a touch bigger (64 px) on my 17 screen. Anyhow. This certainly needs discussion and for discussion we use the kubuntu-devel mailing list. Another temporary workaround is simply to fall back to the VESA driver which works with every video card, but disables acceleration. i. If you cannot install Ubuntu, use the alternate install cd ii.a. If you cannot boot into the installed Ubuntu system without getting a blank screen, use the recovery mode (which is chosen in grub after holding down the shift key during boot) but edit ('e') the kernel parameters, adding i915.blacklist=true to the end. Then boot (Ctrl-X) ii.b. Another way to get it to boot is to use a live cd, like RescueCD (http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page), mount the hard drive and edit boot/grub/grub.cfg manually 1. Edit the file /etc/default/grub to read GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=i915.blacklist=true 2. Run update-grub 3. Create a file named /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf (which doesn't normally exist in Ubuntu) and write in it: Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device Driver vesa EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Configured Monitor EndSection Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Monitor Configured Monitor Device Configured Video Device EndSection (this text is included in Ubuntu under the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe though it is not used) -- [lucid] [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561802 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 606589] [NEW] relative mouse movement in games - cursor/view jumps to same position approximately every second
Public bug reported: Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch) Release:10.10 Codename: maverick After an update on 2010-07-14, relative mouse movement in two SDL-based games broke. Also, a clean install on a separate computer has the same problem. Slightly more often than every second, the view angles in an FPS interface/the cursor jumps back to the same spot while using relative mouse movement. This is not a bug in libsdl1.2 because with it downgraded the problem still exists. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: maverick ** Tags added: maverick -- relative mouse movement in games - cursor/view jumps to same position approximately every second https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606589 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
