Hi Scott, thanks for looking into this. I have never used Ubuntu in a environment like this before (actually I'v never really used Ubuntu) so I cant say for sure. But this guy http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1238322 might have been hit by the same issue in August last year. I do not know if the problem is present upstream, actually I cant say for sure that the problem is in nss_ldap itself. But we do have a lot of OpenSUSE running in the same setup and have newer seen this problem before. Our OpenSUSE is now at .. One side effect of pam_winbind is that sudo now prompts for a second password if you hit Ctrl+C at the first prompt. Will produce the exact same effect when piped to less.
using_history() is called in the init function of the readline extension
at line 168 of ext/readline/readline.c
The reason this didn't break in the standard PHP build is most likely
that libedit wasn't used, as readline is an optional module.
I reported it here:

But that tracker appears to be dead. Also sent report to the Debian
Maintainer, and will mark it as also affecting libedit. I tested it with
the GNU readline library's using_history(), and that did not exhibit the
same problem.
One possible workaround is to build readline as an extension, and not
load it by default. I suspect though that any packages that have php
scripts that need/want readline would be fairly broken then. Another
method is to have the readline extension make sure it lets go of the
terminal if libedit is used.

The upstart runlevel issue was fixed for maverick in 5.1.48-1ubuntu5 which referenced bug 608423. The NEWS.Debian file does in fact mention this problem: munin (1.4.0-1) unstable; urgency=low Move htmldir to /var/cache/munin/www. Note that we currently don't have a proper upgrade mechanism in place. When upgrading from a previous version of munin, you'll need to change /etc/munin/munin.conf htmldir parameter, from /var/www/munin, to /var/cache/munin/www. So, when upgrading, you do need to do some manual reconfiguration. Adding this capability would be nice, and is probably worthy of a separate wishlist bug explaining exactly what you would expect to see on upgrade. The package does, by default, restrict access to 127.0.0.1 only, so you should see it when hitting http://localhost from the machine itself. More complex access controls will require you to define exactly what you want. For the rest of it, I suspect your configuration is the problem, and so I'm marking this incomplete. Please post your apache configuration files so we can ascertain what might be causing the 403. Public bug reported: I discovered yesterday that my system still had an sshd process spawned at boot, despite my having turned off the ssh service with rcconf quite a while ago. Moreover, killing this process with /etc/init.d/ssh stop resulted in an immediate respawn (with no complaints from the script that this is no longer the preferred way to do things). Some self-education about Upstart followed. It looks like the settings in /etc/init/ssh.conf are overriding user settings made through the legacy rc system. Yes. Based on a few tests done by hand on OpenSUSE, nscd speeds up the process a lot: When nscd is running I get a response within 100 mSec in average, sometimes down to 8 mSec and maximum 2.2 seconds. If I stop nscd, answer times ranges between 400 mSec and 2 seconds - the average around 800 mSec. Requesting a new uid (not cached) with each request does not seem to add much to these figures. I only did 4 tests on Ubuntu 2 with nscd running - and the same 2 tests without nscd. With nscd: 2 minutes 51sec., and 16 minutes and the same to tests without nscd: 3 minutes, and 14 minutes. As far as I can tell, I don't see anything in the maintainer scripts or upstart job that respects the existing rc settings upon upgrade. It seems that it would be a worthy tool, and not hard to do, to run something that will modify the upstart job to start on the same run levels as the rc settings during the postinst script. Public bug reported: Problem started with failure to update my sites after my system hung and forced hard shutdown. On rebooting, could not get the server to connect neither could I stop it. I got Error #2002 unable to connect with my phpMyAdmin. Then on the terminal, I could not connect to mysql as root got: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111) Tried searching for the solution but all problem sites talk or error with /var/lib/mysqld/mysqld.soc (2). Solutions offered did not help including that from the MySQL reference manual. So I decided to upgrade the package but it would not install as it could not stop the server that was running. I had not been able to stop it either with /etc/int.d/mysql stop or service mysql stop. At present I am l am locked out of /var/lib/mysql - access denied. I think that you can basically ignore my comment #5. When I was seeing this issue, when booting with kvm, I was not booting with 'boot=on'.
