[Bug 584048] Re: kvm images losing connectivity w/bridged network

2010-08-27 Thread Frank Groeneveld
Hi Serge,

Thanks for your time!

The problem is not with the mac addresses (at least not for me). As I reported
earlier:
For me, these are not related, because I'm not modifying the bridge
when the connectivity is lost. As long as there is steady network
trafic (for example a ping every minute), the connectivity is not
lost. As soon as I stop this, the connectivity will be lost within a
 few hours.

Also note that my situation is like this:
I have a host running Hardy with a bridge with two eth's and two tap devices. I
have two kvm guests: one is Hardy as well and one is Lucid. Only the Lucid
machines loses connectivity, the Hardy machine works fine. In KVM I have
hardcoded the mac addresses (due to an issue of years before where both
machines could get the same mac address).

[Bug 624739] Re: /etc/tomcat6 is created with the wrong permissions

2010-08-27 Thread Thierry Carrez
/etc/tomcat6 is only root-writeable by default for security reasons, so
that an abuse of the tomcat6 user cannot compromise the whole Tomcat
configuration (server.xml, and the users password file). Tomcat6 can
write under /etc/tomcat/Catalina/localhost so that autodeployment works.

Your requirement that the tomcat6 user can write in /etc/tomcat6/opencms
doesn't come from Tomcat but from OpenCMS. You can change the default
protection to suit your particular needs, or use a private instance for
OpenCMS (see about tomcat6-user in
http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/serverguide/C/tomcat.html)

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-27 Thread Nigel Jones
I've had a bit more of a look...

I have been experimenting w/ Windows 2008 64-bit original release
installing the Enterprise edition.

Lucid ships with seabios 0.5.1-0ubuntu2 which experiences the issue.
Maverick ships with seabios 0.6.0-0ubuntu1 which from my testing doesn't.

I did a quick rebuild of 0.6.0-0ubuntu1 for Lucid, and I can boot a 5
vCPU Enterprise VM okay, which I couldn't before.

So it looks like the issue is somewhere upstream between Jan 2010 and
early July 2010...

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-27 Thread Nigel Jones
I isolated fix to upstream patch
http://git.linuxtogo.org/?p=kevin/seabios.git;a=blobdiff;f=src/acpi.c;h=244536a276ae360f016e58b2eefaee83654abd75;hp=f613b034120d3595f9e9c4104acffbeae8dbd228;hb=3012af189e0f89bd33df1c0711a46f098053e9a7;hpb=92a5742b5f9f217ba6315fa13d075ba98ebc3fd6

If someone wants to test it to verify the fix, I've built a PPA package
with the bug fix at https://launchpad.net/~dev-
nigelj/+archive/bugtest/+packages, and find attached a SRU ready debdiff
that includes the upstream patch, plus adds quilt/dpkg-source V3 (quilt)
requirements to match Maverick.

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-27 Thread Nigel Jones
I was going to try and get hold of Dustin via IRC, but I wasn't able to.

I'm not sure how this package fits into the Server SRU picture, and I'm
not really in a position to call how safe an ACPI change like this on
it's own is (although, this was the first of only a few that I can tell
between 0.5.1 0.6.0 that upstream performed, so I'd hazard a guess
that it is safe.

I really thing it deserves some testing/oversight from separate eyes
before it even goes into -proposed etc.

In addition I don't have a box w/ more than 4 cores, I was reproducing
the issue by over-committing CPU resources, so I think it really needs
to be tested on more server-ish type hardware.

[Bug 625394] [NEW] Should puppet-master require, suggest or recommend activerecord?

2010-08-27 Thread Darren Worrall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: puppet

Just experimenting with upgrading to 2.6(.1~rc2-0ubuntu1) on maverick. I
installed puppetmaster-passenger (which works great btw), copied over my
configs and manifests, and it complained that storeconfigs = true could
not be used without activerecord

I installed libactiverecord-ruby and all was ok, but I noted that at the
moment the puppetmaster[-* ] package[s] do neither require, nor
suggest/recommend it

For me, it should be a straight dependency, but I use it, so I'm biased!
I suppose that it could also depend/suggest a database adapter, libdbd-
sqlite3-ruby maybe?

[Bug 624361] Re: service ssh restart does not test the configuration file

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Simon, thanks very much for filing this bug report and working with
us to make Ubuntu better.

Because of the way upstart and sshd work together, its hard to detect
failures. The reason try-restart worked was that it falls through in
/usr/sbin/service, as its not one of the regular actions that upstart
supports.

In looking at this, I think the appropriate fix is to add a pre-stop
that runs

/usr/sbin/sshd -t

And will warn the user that the config file is broken, and possibly even
abort the stop.

Setting status to Triaged as I think this fix can be worked on now.

Setting status to High, as it is a serious problem for server users if
sshd is silently broken on a remote machine.

only part that puppet uses from rails is activerecord. So suggesting
libactiverecord-ruby instead of rails makes sense.

Hello ZuLuS! Thank you for filing this bug report and working with us to
make Ubuntu better.

I don't see any useful error messages in the DpkgTerminalLog.gz that
help me understand the problem much, other than it occurred during the
postinst script (that is, assuming google was able to translate the file
from polish to english properly).

Can you try running

apt-get -f install

And see if that succeeds? If you still get an error, then can you try
running

And upload the output to this bug report?

[Bug 624361] Re: service ssh restart does not test the configuration file

2010-08-27 Thread Simon Déziel
Hi Clint,

Thanks for your additional input. Regarding your suggestion to add a
pre-stop action that runs sshd -t I have to disagree. When I call
service ssh stop I expect the daemon to quit even if there are
configuration errors.

I am not familiar with upstart but maybe there are some hooks other than
pre-stop that could be better suited for this. Maybe a pre-restart hook
exists ?

Thank you

[Bug 624820] Re: package postfix 2.7.0-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 75

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Ken, thank you for filing this bug report and working with us to to
make Ubuntu better!

The DpkgTerminalLog.txt file included in the bug report shows this:

Running newaliases
newaliases: fatal: myorigin parameter setting must not contain multiple values:
ken-desktop hotmail.com

This would appear to be an error in the myorigin parameter that got
written to your postfix config.

If you manually edited /etc/postfix/main.cf or /etc/mailname, then the
answer would be to edit them again, and fix that by choosing either
hotmail.com or ken-desktop.

However, if you did not edit that file, then it may be that somewhere
along the way this invalid value passed error checking (which it should
not by reading the postfix configuration files).

Ken, I'm marking this as Invalid. You may want to try running

dpkg-reconfigure postfix

Which should ask you all these questions again, and fix that value, as
it will not allow you to enter the value that you've got there.

If you do fill out this config data, and you still see the problem, you
should change this report back to status 'New' and explain the steps you
took and the error received.

[Bug 624898] Re: ssh client hang for prolonged connections

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Jason, thanks for filing this bug report and working with us to make
Ubuntu better!

The syscall appears to be select(), which means that ssh is waiting
for data from the other side of some connection. This could be from the
DNS server or the server you have connected to.

What might be more interesting is the output of the debugging mode of
ssh. However, this may not be suitable for public consumption as it
could contain details about the security of not only your local machine,
but that of the remote machine.

If you are going to post that, you should either edit the file to remove
portions that reveal the hostnames/identities of any of the systems or
users that you're connecting to/with, or you can mark this bug as
private before doing so, but then only subscribed users will be able to
see it, so subscribe 'ubuntu-bugcontrol' too so that you can get trusted
users looking at the bug as well.

To generate the debugging output, simply add

-vvv

To your ssh command line, and you will get a ton of output that looks
something like this:

debug1: Requesting no-more-sessi...@openssh.com
debug1: Entering interactive session.
debug2: callback start
debug2: client_session2_setup: id 0
debug2: channel 0: request pty-req confirm 1

When you post the output, Note the sections that take longer than you
would expect them to (and, if you can, exactly how long).

Marking Incomplete pending Jason's response.

[Bug 624900] Re: Authbind not binding WINE to 127.0.0.1:895

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi ruisivi, thank you for filing this bug report and working with us to
help make Ubuntu better!

authbind works by setting LD_PRELOAD, and wine does not work well with
LD_PRELOAD, as they have to do a lot of syscall/library trickery to make
windows calls work in Linux.

This thread explains a lot of it:

http://marc.info/?l=klik-develm=119542615603762w=2

authbind and wine will ever work correctly together, and I have to mark

[Bug 625023] Re: package postfix 2.7.0-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 75

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Cordeyo, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and work
with us to make Ubuntu better!

I believe you have an invalid value int he 'myhostname' field in
main.cf:

From DpkgTerminalLog.gz:

newaliases: warning: valid_hostname: misplaced delimiter:
xubuntu.hsd1.ga.comcast.net.
newaliases: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter myhostname: bad
parameter value: xubuntu.hsd1.ga.comcast.net.
dpkg: error processing postfix (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 75

There is a trailing period on the value. Please try modifying that value
(you may need to change it in /etc/mailname) and then running this in a
terminal:

sudo apt-get -f install

To finish configuring your system.

I do believe that the validation that postfix's configuration system has
should have stopped this from getting to this point.

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Eric, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and working
with us to make Ubuntu better.

This would appear to be because mysqld was stopped or configured in an
incompatible way, as indicated by this message from DpkgTerminalLog.txt:

Creating config file /etc/dbconfig-common/bacula-director-mysql.conf with new
version
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2).

error #2 means No such file or directory, which would only occur if
mysqld was stopped, or the configuration was changed to move the socket
file somewhere else.

mysqld must be started and configured to use /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
in order for the config values to be checked.

Try ensuring that mysqld is started and that the socket file exists, and
then run

sudo dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director-mysql

package, I would encourage you to open a new bug report.

@Carlos: thank you for the excellent translation!

Hello Sebastien, thanks so much for taking the time to file this bug
report.

Even though you have a fixed IP assigned, you must still manually remove
this IP from the range of IP's that you make available to dynamic hosts.

So if you have

   subnet 192.168.22.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
 subnet-specific parameters...
 range 192.168.22.1 192.168.22.40;
   }

192.168.22.30 will still be handed out.

You would need to change it to something like this:

   subnet 192.168.22.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
 subnet-specific parameters...
 range 192.168.22.1 192.168.22.29;

The bind9 prerm script (which is run before we remove the old version)

registers as an error.

For your situation, you can start bind9 before the upgrade to work

[Bug 624361] Re: service ssh restart does not test the configuration file

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
I see your point Simon, and I agree thats what I expect too. I think a
case can be made that sometimes failing safe means doing something
non-intuitive, though in doing something like that, there has to be a
good reason.

There is no pre-restart stanza, and upon looking at upstart's code, it
simply changes the goal state of the job to STOP, then to START, so
this makes sense, though it could be added, it would not be a simple,
natural hook like the pre-stop and pre-start.

About the only way I can think of to retain the expected behavior of
always stopping (which I think is important) and avoid silently
disappearing (even falsely returning 0 on initctl restart) is to simply
warn via the console, when stopping with a broken config, and then fail
in pre-start with the -t check.

Unfortunately, there is some resistance to using 'output console', which
is currently the only way for upstart jobs to communicate with the user
other than daemon.log, which is pretty far removed from a sysadmin in
crisis mode trying to fix their ssh service.

I'm having some trouble even getting restart to work if there are any
pre-stop scripts, so I will continue to look into this.

[Bug 624900] Re: Authbind not binding WINE to 127.0.0.1:895

2010-08-27 Thread rusivi
Clint:

Based on what I read for the thread you posted, while the LD_PRELOAD is
theoretically possible to implement in WINE it would require a large re-
write of WINE. While this is possible, it's highly unlikely due to it
requiring a large re-write of WINE. Hence, it seems the Won't Fix
status is more appropriate than Invalid.

[Bug 625651] Re: package libkadm5clnt6 1.7dfsg~beta3-1ubuntu0.6 failed to install/upgrade:

2010-08-27 Thread Russ Allbery
This looks to me more like something that's seriously wrong with your
system rather than a problem with the package:

Setting up libkadm5clnt6 (1.7dfsg~beta3-1ubuntu0.6) ...
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute installed post-installation script:
Exec format error

The postinst script for that particular package should be just a regular
shell script. That sounds like disk corruption or some similar problem
which is making the postinst script look like a corrupt binary.

2010-08-27 Thread Clint Byrum
rusivi, I see your point completely.

The invalid bug task is reported against authbind, not wine. authbind
can't be rewritten another way and doesn't suffer from any sort of
behavior that isn't consistent with its fundamental, documented design
and operation. Wine simply is not compatible with LD_PRELOAD.

Adding a Won't Fix, Wishlist task to Wine to make sure it is
associated and seen in Wine's complete bug list.

Fn+UP/Down. But in new-Ubuntu (9.10, 10.04) it can't. I think maybe it
made by Kernel. Because in Ubuntu 8.10, when i upgrade the new kernel,
some kernel won't work with Fn key. So i have to use old Kernel or wait
for new kernel (if it can fix)

[Bug 625112] [NEW] compiz doesn't seem to start at startup

2010-08-27 Thread Dhruva Sagar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After I login, the windows do not have borders or title bars, the
windows launch in the top left corner of the screen with a fixed size
and I can't move, resize, minimize, maximize or close the windows from
the window itself, I can however do that from the panel.

The solution which I have found right now is that after every login I go
to System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects - Extra, after
which it takes about 10-15 seconds and then the windows get their
borders title bars as they should.

[Bug 625110] [NEW] Huawei EC1261 not working after update to usb-modeswitch

2010-08-27 Thread dart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-modeswitch

After a update to usbmodeswitch yesterday in Maverick my Huawei ec1261
just stpopped working. The system won't detect the data card. Everything
was working fine before the update. Here is what happens when the data
card is plugged:

1. When data card is plugged, a new mass storage device is shown for a
flash of second and then it just disappears.

2. No option of selecting data card as a connection in network applet.
It was properly configured and was working perfectly before the update.
Edit Connection information shows the configuration profile.

3. Though no mounted drive appears in nautilus, the disk utility in
systemadministration preferences shows a Huawei mass storage drive
under peripheral devices.

4. Tried eject and safely remove from disk utility and then plugged
again, still the same problem.

5. Tried to downgrade to earlier usbmodeswitch packages but the system
won't let me.

This is really annoying to me as I use the data card as main source for
internet connectivity and this problem had made me nearly handicapped.

[Bug 294182] Re: GNOME's Help Slow to Load

2010-08-27 Thread Anthony Glenn
Thanks to Shaun McCance for comment #12. I see what the trouble is. Yelp
is setting itself up to display its full glorious range of capabilities
before it starts drawing to the screen. Hence the long delay with
nothing happening on screen. Make it draw its window, menu bar and the
content of the help file as the first thing it does. Defer other
processing until after the window and content are there on screen. Do
the minimum possible amount of processing before starting to draw. Most
users just want to see their help content as soon as possible, then do a
bit of scrolling, go to the next page and that is about it. Make the
common things fast and on the critical path. Defer processing for the
uncommon things.

It is quite possible the user may never use some advanced features, such
as search. It is wasteful to go to the trouble of setting something up,
then throw away all that work when Yelp quits. Do not set advanced
features up at all, until the user first asks to use them. On the
subject of advanced features to defer or cut, I never use bookmarks, man
and info pages or text search. Help Topics is used rarely.

I agree that it is a pain that GTK+ 3 is different from GTK+ 2. Further,
I agree that GTK+ 3 gets used for new development. However, is it not
the case that GTK+ 3 is a superset of GTK+ 2? So it should not be too
difficult to use only GTK+ 2 for common actions, with advanced features
which use GTK+ 3, simply left out. That would give a cut-down version of
Yelp suitable for Lucid and Maverick. Fix this bug, at the cost of some
features regressions. That would be a better option for most users than
sticking with the present buggy version of Yelp. Yes, a few might be
unhappy. Give those people instructions on how to go back to Yelp
2.30.0. I look forward to the next contribution by Shaun McCance.

Re: [Bug 616596] Re: Philips GoGear ViBE (set to MSC) recognized as MTP

2010-08-27 Thread Darryl Rees
MSC = Mass Storage Class = UMS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_mass-storage_device_class

a) MTP didn't work out of the box with ViBE as a mountable filesystem
b) I've always had issues in the past with MTP, so I just set to MSC which
is more of an industry standard and is more mature on linux
c) it works on Karmic
d) a cursory search of launchpad reveals similar bugs for other devices
which were considered worth fixing:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgphoto2/+bug/330383
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/236422
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/345916

I set the device to MSC so it should be detected as MSC. (And is, when the
offending rule is removed).

lsusb output showing the ViBE identifying as a Mass Storage class device.

[Bug 571534] Re: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login

2010-08-27 Thread sdaau
Just to mention that I'm affected by this bug on my MSI Wind netbook -
usually after suspend, mouse ( Logitech USB ) stops responding to clicks
- interestingly, usually it starts by ignoring clicks on window title
bars (i.e. I cannot move windows anymore by left click and dragging)
although for a while, clicks may still be registered inside a program
(i.e. Scite) or by clicking the window entries on the bottom bar -
however, after a while, mouse responsivity dies, and I have to do 'sudo
service gdm restart' to get mouse back ( unfortunately, this command
closes all possible programs and logs you off ) ...

Funnily, I haven't seen this problem on my Lucid desktop (upgraded from
9.10 - whereas the netbooks first OS was Lucid) - where additionally,
mouse gestures applet (actually, 'Dwell Click') is enabled ??!

[Bug 476866] Re: two-finger scrolling does not work on Dell Studio 15 (1555) via gui config

2010-08-27 Thread Aditya Bhargava
I have seen this same issue on my Dell Studio 15 (1558) running Lucid. I
have a script xinput lines similar to Ricco's above, and this script
runs on automatically boot. But every so often things get reset and I
lose my two-finger scroll and need to go and re-run the script.

I've noticed the same issue in Mint 9 and Fedora 13.
