[Bug 659880] Re: libapache2-mod-php5 will consume all available memory when installed and activated

2010-10-14 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello mayukmok00, thanks so much for taking the time to file this bug
report and help make Ubuntu better!

The logs I see above don't help very much in determining what happened
to your server. However these two lines are very telling:

[Tue Oct 12 15:28:09 2010] [notice] Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) DAV/2 SVN/1.6.6
mod_fcgid/2.3.4 PHP/5.3.2-1ubuntu4.5 with Suhosin-Patch mod_ruby/1.2.6
Ruby/1.8.7(2010-01-10) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8k configured -- resuming
normal operations
[Tue Oct 12 15:28:56 2010] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider
raising the MaxClients setting

The sever reached MaxClients in under 60 seconds of uptime. Also I see
PHP, fcgid, and Ruby all in this one server, so its possible other
things are using up all of the RAM.

In short, I believe this may be due to the web applications you are
serving, not any bug in php.

Can you repeat the sequence which causes the problems on a machine that
is not serving heavy production traffic? Also something that would be
useful would be the output of:

ps auxww | grep www-data

Which should show the running swelled up processes.

Thanks!

[Bug 660227] Re: php5-pgsql crash on getting an error back from postgres

2010-10-14 Thread Clint Byrum
I've tried the test.php script on maverick and it definitely exits
abruptly where one would not expect it to.

Marking Confirmed, setting Importance to High, as I believe this may
affect all php5-pgsql users in a very negative way (errors should not
crash your PHP!)

2010-10-14 Thread mayukmok00
Hi Clint,

I will try to reproduce the issue with a physically hosted machine. What
I have observe is when that package is installed the memory will all
rise up causing the server to be unresponsive.

Will check it again and will give feedback.

Thanks

2010-10-14 Thread James Page
It appears that your hostname (pegaso, homepc.it) is not correctly
specified as it contains a comma.

This is stored in /etc/mailname for postfix and is generated on install
of postfix based on the hostname of your computer (/etc/hostname) but
can be overridden manually by changing /etc/mailname.

Please can you remedy this error and re-run the upgrade and confirm that
it works OK.

Thanks

[Bug 658227] Re: upgrade process does not upgrade underlying BDB format from 4.7 to 4.8 (so slapd aborts with Program version 4.8 doesn't match environment version 4.7 error message)

2010-10-14 Thread James Page
** Description changed:

+ IMPACT:
+ Currently all configured openldap installations being upgraded from Lucid -
Maverick will fail due to underlying database version incompatibility.
+
+ FIX:
+ slapd install/upgrade scripts already have functionality to dump existing
ldap databases and re-load post upgrade. These have been amended to trigger
when upgrading to 2.4.23+ as this is the point where the BDB upgrade was
introduced. The fix has been tested using a PPA + modifying a lucid install to
point at maverick repositories (do-release-upgrade disables PPA's so unable to
test this way). Data loaded into ldap was verified pre and post upgrade.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ Steps to re-produce on a new Lucid install
+ sudo apt-get install slapd ldap-utils
+ Follow the Lucid Server guide through the section entitled populating LDAP to
the point where data is loaded into ldap for the backend configuration and
frontend data.
+ Perform a Lucid-Maverick update:
+ sudo do-release-upgrade -d
+ slapd fails to start with the following error message:
+ Oct 11 16:19:33 lucid-clone-01 slapd[773]: bdb(dc=example,dc=com): Program
version 4.8 doesn't match environment version 4.7

+ Limited; impacts upgrades to latest version of slapd and changes are in
installation scripts only.
+

[Bug 656415] Re: package vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu7.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 3

2010-10-14 Thread Thierry Carrez
The issue is that the ftp user is not created if any user is found on
the system with a name starting with ftp. I'll push a proper fix for
that soon.

The workaround is to create the ftp user and group manually:
sudo addgroup --system --quiet ftp
sudo adduser --system --home /srv/ftp --no-create-home --quiet --gecos 'ftp
daemon' --group ftp

and then retry the install.

[Bug 654549] Re: Cannot Upgrade Tomcat6 when doing release upgrade from lucid to maverick

ok, I see it now. The sed call in the tomcat6.postinst doesn't filter
out some characters (especially /) so if you submit a JAVA_OPTS
containing a / it will fail. Needs to be fixed.

Workaround is to edit your JAVA_OPTS before upgrade to make sure they
don't contain /, then fix it up afterwards.

2010-10-14 Thread James Page
It looks like something had locked /var/cache/debconf/config.dat during
the configuration of clamav-base

fuser -v /var/cache/debconf/config.dat will return the locking process
if any. Kill it and try performing the upgrade again.

Most often, this is only a transient situation and fuser will return
nothing. Simply performing the update again should solve this issue. Let
us know is this resolves your issue.

Thanks

Ignore the above comment. I did the upgrade wrong. I was still using
libclamav6 from -main. Redid the test on Maverick (both i386 and x86_64)

Re: [Bug 658795] Re: postfix gets confused with non-alphanumeric local hostname

2010-10-14 Thread Scott Kitterman
RFC 2119 (IIRC, I don't have web access to check) generally discourages
TLD validation, but calls out all numeric TLDs as an exception that
should be checked. So in general, I agree about TLD validation, but all
numeric is an exception.

I agree that there is an issue, but not in the postfix package. Its
input validation is catching the results of input validation failures
elsewhere in the system. I've proposed looking at this more
systematically in the next development cycle.

[Bug 659958] Re: Squid requires restart after Network Manager made connection to network

2010-10-14 Thread James Page
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 97513 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/97513

I have confirmed this; squid is controlled using upstart so actually
starts up after the NetworkManager has bought up the network interface
as it depends on this event (which puts us in a slightly
different/better position to the issue described in Fedora)

However, when the network configuration changes, squid does not restart
and pickup any new resolv.conf configuration. This would impact on
people using VPN (as above) or hopping between network locations which
generate different resolv.conf configurations.

[Bug 657385] Re: mysql failed to configure while upgrading to 10.04

2010-10-14 Thread TJ Kolev
I think I have found the problem with my installation. /var/lib/mysql is
a link to a location on an iscsi target. I am fairly certain the iscsi
targets were not connected, because eth1, my iscsi interface wasn't
brought up. eth1 didn't come up when I rebooted after the upgrade, Now
eth1 and iscsi are fine, and I updated mysql successfully.

I'd consider this a non-issue at this point.

Thank you.

  sudo apt-get install --reinstall mysql-server
  sudo dpkg --configure -a
  sudo apt-get -f install

This should resolve the first installation failure and put the
installation back into a consistent state.

2010-10-14 Thread James Page
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thanks!

[Bug 97513] Re: squid starts before resolv.conf is populated

2010-10-14 Thread Tobias Krais
In most cases NetworkManager is used for configuring network interfaces.
I attached a file that should be placed
/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ and this solves the issue.

Please remind that just reloading squid is no more sufficient (it was
till gusty gibbon, but later a restart is required).

The Fedora project put the attached file in squid package an I suggest
to do this, too.

Please fix it.

One thing is not solved with the patch: after waking up from standby
mode squid is not restarted. Currently I don't know where to put the
restart file.

** Attachment added: File /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/20-squid solves the
issue. Please add it to squid an squid3 package.

That's not unavoidable; just bump the minimum version check to the

the upgrade will be clean for everyone.

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest at first, but I don't think it
will cover all the cases.

Say someone had a working Lucid version of slapd they've already tried
upgrading to the Maverick release 2.4.23-0ubuntu3, and they haven't ever
done the manual db4.7_ steps to convert the database. In that
case, they'll still have a v4.7 BDB environment in their /var/lib/ldap
directory... but the version of slapcat installed on their machine will
be from 2.4.23-0ubuntu3.

That is, they'll already have a slapcat linked against libdb4.8, and so
the slapd.pre/postinst scripts won't be able to export the old
database in preparation for importing it using the new version.

I don't have an environment available where I can actually test this
myself, but as far as I can see once someone has installed slapd
2.4.23-0ubuntu3 it's too late to try fixing this problem with the usual
export/import cycle

This bug impacts Maverick+ (not Lucid as this uses an earlier version of

That will force a database dump for every upgrade to maverick. This is the same
fix as in Debian (modulo the package revision).

It won't address the use case outlined in comment 17. For users that
have already upgraded to maverick the workaround outlined in the bug

[Bug 660747] [NEW] Maverick corrupts files on samba network shares

2010-10-14 Thread franco_bez
Public bug reported:

my installtion of Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit Desktop Edition has one severe
Problem when using Samba Shares:

When I edit files (i.e. using gedit) that lie on the Network share and I
happen to remove some content (making the file smaller in size) and then
save the file, The file get's corrupted - the size remains the same as
it was before, and when I reopen the file has trailing garbage.

This also happens if I try to overwrite a file with one that is smaller,
the result is garbage.

What can I do against it ?

Details:
Always reproductible.
Happens with smb shares that lie on Windows Machines as well as with an Ubuntu
Hardy Server's share.
Only my Maverick Machine produces this corruption.
Copying new files works without problems.
Increasing file size also works.
Just when I try to decrease the file size corruption occurs.

The only workaround I have so far is to delete the file on the share,
and then copy the new file - quite annoying.

Any Ideas, tips, hint welcome.

[Bug 97513] Re: Squid requires restart after Network Manager made connection to network

2010-10-14 Thread Tobias Krais
Hi Luis,

not really. Your patch relaods squid. But just reloading squid is not
sufficient. We have to restart squid.

Why does nobody include the file if there is a patch since one year
available!?!

Greetings,

Tobias

Looking through the Debian changelog, it appears that
there was a similar problem between 2.4.23-1 and 2.4.23-4.
The switch to libdb4.8 was made in 2.4.23-1, but the
change to slapd.scripts-common made at that time (SVN
revision 1275) used lt-nl 2.4.21 as the conversion
cutoff, so the export/import cycle was missed for systems
upgrading from 2.4.21-1.

This was corrected in 2.4.23-4 (SVN 1307) after being
reported in debbugs #593550. I see that the correction
does use 2.4.23-4 as the cutoff version number, so I
think that in Debian there would be errors attempting to
upgrade from a pre-2.4.23 database to one of the earlier
2.4.23 packages (but without doing any manual fixes) and
then up to the -4 version. But it also looks like 2.4.23-4
was the first of the 2.4.23 versions to make it into
Testing, so presumably there weren't too many people
affected by that gap.

In Ubuntu we have the situation that the gap includes
the version released in Maverick, so it seems likely to
affect more people

[Bug 516016] Re: [karmic] openvpn service starts before dhclient

2010-10-14 Thread yiun
I had the same problem with a static ip. I think the problem is that
openvpn starts before ip-binding does. Even when openvpn is the last
script in the rc, the problem occurs furthermore.

I solved the problem by removing the line local xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. out
of the server.conf.

[Bug 660421] Re: After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 amd64, every execution of a php page causes a 403 error. Lighttpd + PHP cgi

2010-10-14 Thread James Page

Thanks for the information that you uploaded - it was really helpful. I
have reproduced your issue successfully; in the newer version of
lighttpd on Maverick you will need to enable the fastcgi and fastcgi-php
modules (which is new as of 1.4.26-2). These files separate the
configuration that was in fastcgi in version 1.4.26-1.1ubuntu3.

Running the following command should resolve your issue:

  sudo lighty-enable-mod fastcgi-php

Please update this bug report if this does resolve your issue.

Thanks

[Bug 660747] Re: Maverick corrupts files on samba network shares

2010-10-14 Thread franco_bez
I can reproduce the bug even on shares that reside on the same machine:

In Nautilus I right-click on a folder and chose file sharing options
to make it a writable share.

Then, again in Nautilus, I navigate to network and mount the share by
clicking on it and supplying username and password.

I created a new file on the share sample.txt with the following content:
01 sample line of text
02 sample line of text
03 sample line of text
04 sample line of text
05 sample line of text
06 sample line of text
07 sample line of text
08 sample line of text
09 sample line of text
10 sample line of text

Then I removed the lines 02 up to 05 from the file and hit save. Editor shows:
01 sample line of text
06 sample line of text
07 sample line of text
08 sample line of text
09 sample line of text
10 sample line of text

When I reopen the file the new content is:
01 sample line of text
06 sample line of text
07 sample line of text
08 sample line of text
09 sample line of text
10 sample line of text
07 sample line of text
08 sample line of text
09 sample line of text
10 sample line of text

I tried several editors, several servers providing SAMBA shares (Ubuntu Hardy,
Windows Vista, and my Maverick notebook)
The result is always the same.

A very, very nasty bug.

That will force a database dump for every upgrade to
maverick. This is the same fix as in Debian (modulo the
 package revision).

It won't address the use case outlined in comment 17.
For users that have already upgraded to maverick the
workaround outlined in the bug description should be
 followed.

Again, I don't have a way to actually test this, but I
believe that putting the 0ubuntu3.1 onto the comparison
means that in the case described in comment 17, the
upgrade script will attempt to do the export/import but
will not be able to do so (because the existing slapcat
will not be compatible with the existing db files), and
the package installation will abort.

If, on the other hand, the user had done the manual
repair steps already, the export/import will succeed --
but in that situation the db files have already been
converted, so the export/import cycle would not actually
be needed

If I'm correct, then it's probably better to leave the
comparison as lt-nl 2.4.23 (or perhaps lt-nl
2.4.23-0ubuntu1). That should guarantee that the export
is being run using a pre-2.4.23 version of slapcat, and
avoid touching the database on systems coming up from
post-2.4.23 versions (since the script can't do anything
for those systems anyway).

[Bug 656738] Re: apache2 restart fails, but exit code is zero

2010-10-14 Thread Scott Moser
I'm unable to reproduce this on 10.10. I tried with something like:
while : ; do apt-get install --reinstall apache2-mpm-worker; done

I see messages to the console like:

.../apache2-mpm-worker_2.2.16-1ubuntu3_i386.deb) ...

the 'waiting' and the lack of failure would indicate to me that this is
fix-released.

If you are interested in getting the bug fixed in 8.04, you should
nominate it for that release.

it is started too soon you see an error message about port 80 being busy
(still used by not sopped apache) and apache then fails to start.

I assumed the waiting ...done message was indicating that it actually
waited for apache to stop, and thus the start wouldn't hit the taken
port 80.

[Bug 658227] Re: upgrade process does not upgrade underlying BDB format from 4.7 to 4.8 (so slapd aborts with Program version 4.8 doesn't match environment version 4.7 error message)

2010-10-14 Thread Mathias Gug
Thanks Nathan and James for the comments on ubuntu3.1.

I've uploaded a new version ubuntu3.2 to maverick-proposed.

I haven't been able to thoroughly test the ubuntu3.2 packages as my
testing environment is currently broken. Please test the ubuntu3.2
packages and report any failure in package new installs and upgrades.
