[Bug 684088] Re: libvirt should detect the presence of tools at use-time rather than at start-time
Sure, will do. For the record: ebtables_cmd_path is set at start-up in ebiptablesDriverInit() and then checked for null-ity before use in src/nwfilter/nwfilter_ebiptables_driver.c. [Bug 687275] [NEW] Fix graceful action in init script when mod_chroot is enabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apache2 The init script uses $APACHE2CTL graceful $2 to gracefully restart/reload Apache. This will fail however when using mod_chroot (where Apache itself gets chrooted), and therefore the init script should fallback to restart in this case for reload, force-reload and graceful. This might get done by adding the following code to reload: if [ -f /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/mod_chroot.load ]; then # mod_chroot is loaded. graceful won't work. apache_restart else # normal reload code fi The current block from restart would get abstracted into a apache_restart function, which would get called in case mod_chroot is loaded/enabled and for when restart itself is requested. I have code like this in the dpkg-old init script, but do not remember if I had written it myself. This should get forwarded/applied to the Debian package, too - I'd just like to get some feedback before forwarding it. ** Affects: apache2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687275 Title: Fix graceful action in init script when mod_chroot is enabled -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Jake's problem was that pulseaudio was not installed. That could be a bug in the installer, but I would actually guess it is just expected with KDE - do they still use arts? [Bug 575919] Re: no sound: pulseaudio connection refused
Hi Serge, To be more precise: * rdesktop from the current workstation to a Windows VM on the current workstation connects correctly (rdesktop connects correctly) to PulseAudio on the current workstation. This allows the rdesktop user to hear the sound being produced by the Windows VM through PulseAudio via rdesktop. From this we know that PulseAudio on the current workstation is working correctly and that the sound system in the VM is producing sound. The problem is this: * KVM/QEMU contain a virtual sound card. This virtual hardware is supposed to be able to receive the sound from the VM and send it to the PulseAudio system. I have tried very hard to get that hardware to actually connect to PulseAudio via some combination of command line options - without success. The virtual sound card is in KVM/QEMU, there is some documentation on the many command line parameters that control it, there are many options intended to make it possible to use the feature on workstations with different sound system setups, the VM OS recognizes the different virtual devices that can be emulated - in short: everything looks good but doesn't work with PulseAudio. I was playing with this quite some time ago and my memory is fuzzy on details but I recall that the VM was able to connect directly to a sound system (ie: locking the hardware so that no other software can connect.) The problem was getting it to connect to PulseAudio so that, for example, I can hear the sound produced by the VM while listening to Amarok on the main workstation or while talking on my softphone. My thanks as always for the excellent work you guys are doing! [Bug 687535] [NEW] upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
Public bug reported: When sshd gets a signal 1 for reload, it forks a new process and ditches the old. This causes upstart to believe that ssh has crashed, and loses track of it. A second reload (or any other initctl operation on ssh) will thus say: reload: Unknown instance: There would be 2 ways to fix this: 1. Don't have ssh fork on relod, but keep the same pid 2. Use a different mechanism in upstart to keep track of ssh. Maybe a pid file? Just tracking children of the exited ssh won't work, or it might accidentally track a particular session rather than the master, if somebody just happens to log in close to reload time. # lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release:10.04 # dpkg -l openssh-server | cat Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ NameVersion Description +++-===-==-= ii openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4 secure shell (SSH) server, for secure access from remote machines # dpkg -l upstart Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name VersionDescription +++-==-==- ii upstart0.6.5-7event-based init daemon ** Affects: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687535 Title: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 673654] Re: Upcoming clamav release with security fixes
Hi Serge, I've gone ahead and uploaded clamav packages to the ubuntu-security- proposed ppa at https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security- proposed/+archive/ppa/ ; please test and report feedback here. In doing so, I ran in to a few issues with your debdiff, mostly having to do with your changelog entries: 1) security fixes for RELEASE need to be targeted for the RELEASE- security pocket (e.g. maverick-security rather than just maverick) rather than just RELEASE as you would for the release under development. (Similarly, for non-security Stable Release Updates, you'd target to the RELEASE-proposed pocket; they get later copied once approved to the RELEASE-updates pocket.) 2) the maverick debdiff was against the version in maverick, not the version in maverick-updates, and thus failed to apply. When performing security updates, our policy is to apply them on top of the latest existing versions in RELEASE-security or RELEASE-updates, whichever is higher. I also adjusted the versioning. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdatePreparation#Packaging for more information about our policies here. 3) I adjusted your changelog entry to include the CVE identifiers, a reference to this bug report, and direct URL references to the cherry- picked upstream patches to ease people researching the issue based on the changelog and debdiff. Thanks! ** Changed in: clamav (Ubuntu Lucid) Status: Triaged = Fix Committed ** Changed in: clamav (Ubuntu Maverick) Status: Triaged = Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to clamav in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/673654 Title: Upcoming clamav release with security fixes -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Based on the VarLogDistupgradeApttermlog.gz content, it looks like your /etc/postfix/main.cf contains lines which belong in your /etc/postfix/master.cf. [Bug 575919] Re: no sound: pulseaudio connection refused
THANK YOU!! First let me say that the command line options that you listed above work perfectly. That's already a big step forward. As you can see from the initial set of error messages provided by Peter Bienstman, the original problem was a connection refused message. I don't remember what versions of libvirt/pulse ubuntu I was running back then but today the messages are very different. I'm still getting connection refused messages - but now I'm getting additional messages that show the problem to be related to Libvirt's use of user libvirt- qemu and the associated permissions for various folders. There may be other issues that are preventing other users from getting this to work. In my case I would say that this is now a libvirt setup/config bug - not a kvm bug. I'll keep tinkering a bit longer. [Bug 575919] Re: no sound: pulseaudio connection refused
Hi Serge, I'm not the right person for this job. It may be there's something wrong with the way kvm asks for pulse resources. There might also be a resource conflict between the virtual network devices and the virtual sound device. I've put a few hours into it but I'm not knowledgeable enough to determine where the problem lies (kvm or libvirt) for my case. If I understand the original bug report, though, the problem has been fixed - KVM no longer has any problem connecting to pulse when called as a normal user - at least not for me. [Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
Alain, I understand your frustration. This is actually I think a little more serious than Low, as existence of a workaround only barely mitigates the impact of this. The problem, I think, is that we're using expect fork, and I'm not sure why, when sshd has -D, and its clearly not reliable for this instance, since the daemon regularly forks and exits. Raising importance to High, as the reload command *must* be reliable for sshd, as failure of sshd could result in the system being totally unmanageable. ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Low = High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687535 Title: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
Also this is not really a new bug in upstart. It is related to bug #530779 which causes issues when the parent dies, but its not the same issue, and in fact, the proc connector probably wouldn't help because the proc connector still doesn't solve the problem of knowing when this fork is actually a good one that needs to be followed as the main process versus a fork of a child that just needs to be reaped. I'm not going to mark it Invalid yet though. I'd like to get some Upstart experts' opinions on whether or not it makes sense to solve this, and really, bug #530779, by simply saying if the process we're tracking forks, then quits, that we should always track the children as the main process. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687535 Title: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Amos, if I understand you right, there's no way to properly disable daemonization in squid 3.2+? Seems that any program that forks and exits its main process on SIGHUP is unsuitable for use with 'expect fork' or 'expect daemon', so this begs the question, why can't we disable daemonization without disabling all SMP? [Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
Alain, I understand your frustration. think a little more serious than Low, Thanks for your insight. as existence of a workaround only barely mitigates the impact of this. Just a note about this workaround: kill -9 `pidof sshd` will saw off the branch on which you're sitting if you happen to manage the system remotely. A safer workaround would be kill -9 `cat /var/run/sshd.pid` The problem, I think, is that we're using expect fork I think what's definitely needed is a way to make upstart track processes by pidfile. and I'm not sure why, when sshd has -D Indeed, that seems to work (just tested it). So, why does ssh fork on reload in the case without -D, if it works without this fork with -D? I'm not going to mark it Invalid yet though. Why do you think this bug should be marked invalid (/etc/init/ssh.conf is part of the openssh-server .deb)? Especially after basically agreeing with me... In general, in Ubuntu, triagers are far too quick to mark bugs as invalid, leading to situations where real problems still aren't fixed in the next release, or problems in LTS releases go unfixed for over a year. that we should always track the children as the main process. This is tricky for processes such as ssh, as upstart might end up accidentally tracking one particular session, rather than the master. Just imagine if a user logs in at exactly the moment where the admin issues a reload ssh. Init would then not know which child to track (new master, or the session of the user who just logged in). And in the case of squid, upstart would not even know that something is amiss as here the issue is about some intermediate process _not_ exiting when it should, so upstart would not know that something is amiss until after the first reload (... causing that first reload to be ignored...). A safer alternative would be to optionally track by pidfile (which could be monitored by inotify, and re-read after a child exits). Of course, existence of pid listed in pidfile should be verified by sending it a -0 signal, so that upstart wouldn't get confused by stale pid files.
