[Bug 695010] [NEW] pavucontrol unstable

2010-12-28 Thread Arunas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pavucontrol

I have 2 sound cards: on-boards NVidia and USB VoIP headphones.

Sometimes I need to change Playback or Recording device when the
application has picked the wrong one. Unfortunately, when I click on the
device picker button, it briefly flashes the selection list and closes
it again. If I do it several times very quickly, sometimes I can catch
the selection radio button list and select different input or output,
and it actually works. Unfortunately, this often hangs or crashes the
pavucontrol application.

 Hi,
On one of the times that the PC boots OK, can you please run

 apport-collect 694993

as soon as possible; that will collect a load of information about your
machine and add it to this report. You could also try booting into
'recovery mode' and see if there is any more information on the screen
 when it panics.

It doesn't sound like a security issue to me.

 Bug description:
Sometimes, when I boot, the PC makes a kernel panic, and Caps Lock and

Other times, the PC boots perfectly, but after 30 minutes more or less,
the PC hangs, with the blinking LEDs

I think that it's a security bug, because it can be used to install
something without super user permission

[Bug 695012] [NEW] Kernel 2.6.32-27 49 won't restart/shutdown under XenServer

2010-12-28 Thread Brian Lagoni
Public bug reported:

System: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Package: linux-image-2.6.32-27-virtual

The servers are running as guests under XenServer 5.6 (with update 1,2 and 4).
After installation of the new kernel, my ubuntu guests won't reboot or restart
as they did with the older kernels.
Using the previous kernel(linux-image-2.6.32-24-virtual) it works at it should.

The console only states on reboot:
* Will now restart
Restarting system.

and on shutdown
System halted.

After this nothing happens.

To reboot/shutdown I have to make a forced reboot/shutdown from the
XenCenter(the XenServer management tool).

If there are any information missing to this bug report, please let me
known and I will try to supply them.

2010-12-28 Thread Micah Gersten
Before that happens, someone actually needs to research the apps to
see what is in the wrong category according to the Software Center
rules and the FreeDesktop Standard. Metabugs where apps really aren't
affected just annoy a lot of people with bugspam.

[Bug 574705] Re: iscsitarget recommends module-source even though it's now prebuilt

2010-12-28 Thread flickerfly
I know it isn't needed, but it is confusing that it exists. It took me
some time to be certain that it wasn't needed. While trying to debug
something I'm left wondering if I do or don't need it and if the
instructions I'm reading are accurate or out-dated. Especially since
Natty may need it this will become more confusing for folks unfamiliar
with how things are working here. At the very least, the package could
remove the recommendation in Maverick and then the other -module won't
show up and will save people like me some time. It also brings a bit
more confidence that the package is worthy of use.

I don't know how to mark things dupes in launchpad.

Marking as duplicate, as this is the same issue as reported in bug
#667071, and many other bugs reporting that some weird application is
opening when clicking a place from the places menu. Something changes
file associations badly, and until now, I haven't found what was that.
If you have any info about what did you do lastly (maybe a package
install log) and if you know that before that update this did not
happen, please attach it here. It would be nice to know what changes the
default application for the Folder type. also note, that there is a
workaround in bug #667071 at comment 10.

Re: [Bug 672177] Re: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown because init cannot be restarted

2010-12-28 Thread Scott James Remnant
On Tue, Dec 28, 2010 at 6:47 AM, Clint Byrum cl...@fewbar.com wrote:

This makes sense, because telinit u just sends SIGTERM to upstart, which
has no handler, as it was removed by revision 977, and doesn't seem to
have been added back. Since SIG_DFL signals are not delivered to init,
I'm not sure how umountroot's call to 'telinit u' can help in this case.

Unless I'm missing something in upstart's code (quite likely) I think
there may still potentially need to be a change in upstart to support
 re-executing.

Hmm, while that handled was removed Upstream, the code should have
been retained in the Ubuntu package as part of the telinit u patch.

The idea is that rather than doing a full state transfer, Upstart just
re-exec's itself and loses all state. That's why we do it as the last
thing before unmounting the root on shutdown, because it then doesn't
matter about the state - there shouldn't be any.

Maybe that part of the patch has been lost?

Scott

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal )
:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 621265] Re: Slow Wireless Connection in Intel 3945abg

2010-12-28 Thread Radosław Piliszek
Thanks for info about 2.6.36.2 on Mint.

2.6.35.10 works perfectly fine on Gentoo.

I think the problem is somewhere else. I mean it can be actually a problem with
kernel but only when used with some software etc.
In Gentoo I use wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd. IIRC Ubuntu uses NetworkManager.

Ok, two tasks to be done:
1) Test Ubuntu/Mint w/o NetworkManager - use manual connection handling with
wpa_supplicant.
2) Test 2.6.34.7 on Ubuntu/Mint.

Summary:
Gentoo: 2.6.34/35/36 OK
Ubuntu: 2.6.35/36 Bad

I have updated packages: nfs-kernel-server and nfs-common to Maverick versions
and now it works.
Why Lucid isn't updated if it's a LTS version!? :-(

[Bug 695028] [NEW] network-manager need to be restarted after vpnc installation

2010-12-28 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

Hello,

When installing network-manager-vpnc-gnome, after configuring immediatly
a VPN profile, connexion failed to be established. Network-manager tells
this is a secret error with the notify box in gnome GUI. When looking at
/var/log/syslog we see that the secret is not provided to the plugin
(although we configured it well in the vpn profile). If we set in the
VPNC profile to always asks the secret, when launching the VPN, it
failed without asking the secret to the user.

The only solution : restart manually network-manager :
/etc/init.d/network-manager restart
Then it works!

Simple but I got a user blocked all morning because of it...

Please if network-manager need to be restarted after the vpnc plugin
installation, please do it (post-install script?).

Thank you,
nm

[Bug 310848] Re: audio cd not recognised

2010-12-28 Thread Wolf Geldmacher
I have a Thinkpad x301 (MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-844) and I still have problems in
maverick to recognise audio CD's.
It's not the HW (drive works fine in Vista), it's only audio CD's (data CD's
work fine). It's 100% reproducible. It has hit
not only Ubuntu, but other distirbutions (Fedora, SuSE, ...), too. Still no
reasonable solution.

This bug has been around now since 2008 - voting it the oldest unfixed
bug! ;-)

2010-12-28 Thread damaan
I'm also affected by this bug. I have a Core i7, an SSD and an Nvidia
Quadro FX 880M. Things looked good with the Noveau driver, but when
switching to the non-free Nvidia driver I get the ugly non-themed look.
The workaround in #68 seems to solve the problem, and the warning about
multiple xsettings managers is no longer written to my .xsession-errors
file.

[Bug 695043] [NEW] LiveRadio plugin doesn't play the shoucasts stations

2010-12-28 Thread axel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee-community-extensions

Ubuntu 10.04
Banshee 1.8.0
Live Radio 1.8.0.1
Banshee LiveRadio plugin doesn't play the shoucasts stations, it can't display
/ download list of genres.
It looks like it is caused by some changes in Shoutcast but I think plugin
should be updated accordingly.
It was discussed on Ubuntu forum:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1648105
Shoutcast is in the process of updating to 2.0 API interface.

I can still connect and listen to streams using Radiostation fatcher and Opera.
The same problem is on rhythmbox
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox-radio-browser/+bug/691552
and Exaile, Tunapie.
Live365, magnatune and xiph work ok.

[Bug 694862] Re: moving cursor over inactive window tabs changes their color to that of the active window

2010-12-28 Thread nick
This issue occurs prevalently in themes AMBIANCE, DUST, and NEW WAVE. It
occurs to a lesser extent in all the other themes except for CLEARLOOKS.
It does NOT occur in CLEARLOOKS (i.e., moving the cursor over an
inactive tab will not change its color). Moving the cursor over a
minimized window tab should not change its color in any theme--this
would solve the problem.

wrong in that process. Are you able to reproduce the problem? Else,

[Bug 667071] Re: archive manager

2010-12-28 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi,
The workaround in (10) didn't work for me.

The other observation is that

xdg-open /

triggers the same problem.

(Which makes me wonder if it's related to the breakage in bug 670128)

But xdg-open is calling gvfs-open, and gvfs-open /triggers the same
I can see that gvfs-open has read
/usr/share/applications/exo-file-manager.desktop and that tells it to
run

exo-open --launch FileManager filename

(that's from exo-utils, part of xfce)

If I run exo-preferred-applications I can see that File Manager is set
to evince (!); if I flick that to Nautilus it opens.

(Although leaves a straggling window saying it's opening it even though
it did).

Has everyone else who has this problem also got exo-utils installed?
I would have thought that we'd want xfce stuff to co-exist with a gnome desktop
without getting in eachothers way.

Dave

[Bug 694860] Re: clicking X in the window title bar does not QUIT Rhythmbox

2010-12-28 Thread nick
Yes and No. Rhythmbox itself is closed (i.e., not minimized to bottom
panel but closed--while the music keeps playing). An icon does appear in
the notification area; however, I generally do not have the
notification icon on my panel/s so I cannot see it. But while
troubleshooting this I activated the notification icon and saw that it
was leaving an icon.

[Bug 504440] Re: sd card safely remove drive kills reader device

2010-12-28 Thread mannheim
Although Won't Fix may be right for the bug against gvfs, there is a
bug here which really, really needs fixing. Steps to reproduce on my
machine:

1. Boot to desktop and log in.
2. Insert a memory card and wait for the icon to appear on desktop.
3. Select Safely Remove Drive in the contextual menu.

After step 3, the built-in 7-in-1 memory-card reader on my Dell inspiron
is unusable without a reboot. To the end-user, there is no difference
between a disk and a drive and a whatever. So the user (me) will
choose Safely Remove Drive just as often as Eject. Indeed, the added
word Safely makes it seem like the better option.

I think the bug is that the option Safely Remove Drive appears at all.
For example, with my built-in CD drive, the option Safely Remove Drive
does not appear: only Eject. For other built-in drives with removable
media, the menu should be the same (although the word Eject is a bit
awkward.)

[Bug 667071] Re: archive manager

2010-12-28 Thread Robert Roth
No, I'm sure I do not have exo-utils installed, and this happened to me
too. So the problem is something else.

[Bug 695053] [NEW] drastic color scheme for battery mode

2010-12-28 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The indicator applet for the power management displays the status of my battery
as red.
The red icon with a fill level of about nothing left is suitable to imply the
imminent demise of my laptop's battery.

A closer look at the status reveals: A whopping 1h 10 minutes of runtime left
(see screenshot).
So WTF is the icon red when there's really a quite a lot of time left? It would
be ok to display a yellow warning, but red always implies a critical status.
I'd consider 15 minutes to be a crititcal threshold, but 1h:10m?
