 The suggestions are pretty fine.

 - flushing stale input (though at driver level)

Certainly. I even added some flushes earlier, but haven't touched the
updateinfo and/or the functions it calls yet. I'll add it along with
forthcoming patches (icanon mode and the rest). Looking at the strace,
flushing post-failure might be good idea in certain cases as well.

 - reopening serial port

If the upper layers of nut don't disallow this kind of behaviour for some
reason - it's good idea as well. Should be helpful in weird cases, and at
the very least wouldn't hurt at all. If it would help in this particular
 case, hard to say.

none special. we already have to somehow do so with USB devices.

 - smartmode()

TBH, I'm not sure why it diligently tries to enter SM 5 times. Pre-emptive
flush + 'Y' + reasonable delay (icanon or not) should be all that is
necessary. If we don't succeed, next attempt shouldn't miraculously (in
theory) make much of a difference 1 second later ...

Thanks for pointing out those issues.

thanks for taking care of it ;-)

cheers,
Arnaud

[Bug 771148] [NEW] redirect-gateway fails when default route does not use a gateway

2011-04-26 Thread Andreas Oberritter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openvpn

When using a PPP connection to access the internet, OpenVPN fails to
replace the default route.

Server's configuration:

[Bug 374589] Re: Samba fails to start at boot when not connected to network (and specific interfaces are configured)

2011-04-26 Thread alainpannetier
I've adapted and tried the workaround developed by David Harel (the
initial bug reporter) but that does not work with interfaces that are
beyond NetworkManager's jurisdiction (e.g. vboxnet0).

So we're left with two equally undesirable options
  - remove any interface binding condition (i.e. poor security).
  - develop a job polling for any interface status change with the task of
systematically restarting smbd.

when you bind on vboxnet0, wlan0 and eth0 interface status changes can
be a pretty frequent event.

So +1 for the wishlist.

Why could smbd not simply listen (as in listener design pattern) to net
interface changes and bind/unbind on any interface configured in
smb.conf an when-available basis ?

[Bug 771227] [NEW] Domain save/restore does not work (kvm)

2011-04-26 Thread Paul McEnery
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 11.04
Release:11.04

libvirt-bin:
  Installed: 0.8.8-1ubuntu6
  Candidate: 0.8.8-1ubuntu6
  Version table:
 *** 0.8.8-1ubuntu6 0

You create a domain via virt-manager. Once installed it should be possible to
save the state of a VM to disk, and restore it.

The domain appears to save correctly, and restores, but the host performs a
fresh boot.
The same behaviour is seen when using virsh:

$ virsh save name name.save
$ virsh restore name.save

[Bug 529714] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in _nss_wins_gethostbyname_r()

2011-04-26 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Okay, I think I've found the issue, based on a crash with liferea:-

At wins.c:95, we have
DEBUGLEVEL = 0;

Somewhere in source3/include/debug.h, we have
#define DEBUGLEVEL *debug_level
extern int DEBUGLEVEL;

In source3/lib/debug.c, we have:
int DEBUGLEVEL = debug_all_class_hack;

Based on this, all seems well and good, except that due to a problematic build
system, libnss_wins.so dynamically resolves this debug_level variable when
loaded by libc. In the case of liferea, it uses a global int debug_level
somewhere around its source code. I reckon the other applications that are
affected by this bug also use something similar.

Given that Natty is really near, and I reckon it's too late to be trying
something grand like controlling what symbols do and do not get
exported/dynamically resolved during load, I have come up with a patch
that renames debug_level to smb_debug_level in source3/include/debug.h.
This should solve the issue for the time being.

I'm now test-building the patched package, and will post a follow-up
comment.

[Bug 771148] Re: redirect-gateway fails when default route does not use a gateway

2011-04-26 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Hi Andreas,

Thank you for taking the time to report bugs and trying to make Ubuntu
Server better.

Unfortunately, this doesn't really seem like a bug of OpenVPN but rather
ppp is probably not setting the default gateway when it should. Reading
[1], we can confirm that OpenVPN *needs* the default route in this case,
to be able to function properly.

Now, in your PPP configuration you should be able to specify a default
route a should set it as specified by [2] (since it seems like an old
bug and fixed already)

Furthermore, there's a work around to generate the default gateway
automatically and can be found at [3].

Based on the information above, I'd say this bug should be set to Wont
Fix.However, as there a related Debian bug, I'll keep it open as
incomplete.

Thank you again

I'm surprised nss modules aren't loaded with RTLD_DEEPBIND specified.
This is a flag for dlopen() that allows you to indicate that module
local symbols should preferred to global ones.

From the manpage:

RTLD_DEEPBIND (since glibc 2.3.4)
Place the lookup scope of the symbols in this library ahead of
the global scope. This means that a self-contained library
will use its own symbols in preference to global symbols with
the same name contained in libraries that have already been
loaded. This flag is not specified in POSIX.1-2001.

Cheers,

Jelmer

[Bug 771148] Re: redirect-gateway fails when default route does not use a gateway

2011-04-26 Thread Andreas Oberritter
Hi Andres,

yes, OpenVPN needs a default route, and that route already exists. But
you're mixing up route and gateway. PPP by definition does not need to
specify a gateway, because all packets travel through the peer.

To function properly, OpenVPN should create a host route through ppp0.
To do this, no gateway IP address is required at all. E.g. if your
OpenVPN-server's address is 1.2.3.4, then the client should create a
route like ip route add 1.2.3.4/32 dev ppp0 instead of ip route add
1.2.3.4/32 via $GATEWAY dev ppp0.

Of course, there are numerous ways to workaround this problem, but I'm
more interested in solutions which work out of the box.

Regards,
Andreas

[Bug 771227] Re: Domain save/restore does not work (kvm)

2011-04-26 Thread Paul McEnery
I've been trying this out every time a new version of Ubuntu is coming up for
release, and it has never worked! However, this is the most promising result
that I have seen to date. Maverick version of virt-manager seems to be able to
correctly save the running state to a file, however it prompts you for a save
location. It does not default to the location down /var/lib/libvirt. However,
there appears to be no way to restore the VM through virt-manager on maverick.
Despite this, I could successfully restore via virsh as follows:

$ virsh restore debian.save

In this case, the console springs to life inside virt-manager - with the
VM in the running state that I saved. This is the behaviour I would
expect to see.

In terms of reproducibility, I have a Fedora and Debian guest. Neither
are restorable on natty. They both simply start booting from scratch on
restore.

I am very encouraged by the how good things are looking on the
virtualisation front on natty. As I was saying, this is the closest that
I have come seeing this work seamlessly since libvirt and virt-manager
were included.

I suspect there is an issue with this particular version of libvirt. If
I get some time I'll try rebuilding the 0.8.8 package with the 0.9.0
source and put it in my PPA.

[Bug 771339] [NEW] qemu-system-arm stopped while loading images resulted from buildroot

2011-04-26 Thread Dwi Sasongko Supriyadi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

To reproduce this issue:

Create kernel image and cpio rootfs from buildroot 2011.02 using
qemu_arm_versatile_defconfig then try following from buildroot top
directory:

qemu-system-arm -M versatilepb -m 128M -kernel output/images/zImage
-initrd output/images/rootfs.cpio.gz -nographic

Uncompressing Linux... done, booting the kernel.

Then stopped endlessly.

When using older kernel version (I did not try all possible version, but
I picked 2.6.27.58) the resulting image can be loaded.

Workaround: Install Qemu 0.14.0 from source, buildroot images can be
loaded and run normally.

Hi Jamie - your syslog shows that Upstart attempted to restart smbd a
number of times, but since smbd kept exiting in error, it eventually hit
the upstart respawn limit at which point Upstart stopped attempting to
start it.

The problem suggests an issue either with the smbd binary or one of the
files it reads (maybe an invalid /etc/samba/smb.conf?)

[Bug 771305] Re: smbd does not start on first boot with 20110426

2011-04-26 Thread Jamie Strandboge
@James,

This is a default install with no configuration. After reboot I can
login and start smbd by hand manually with no problems (ie, without
changing /etc/samba/smb.conf). These were the interesting lines in
/var/log/samba/log.smbd:

[2011/04/26 10:07:06, 0] smbd/server.c:1123(main)
  smbd version 3.5.8 started.

ERROR: Could not determine network interfaces, you must use a interfaces
config line

These are repeated over and over until the upstart respawn limit is
reached. This looks to me to be some sort of missing networking item in
the upstart job (smbd.conf only has 'start on local-filesystems'), but I
am not an upstart expert

2011-04-26 Thread Stefan Bader
I agree, the patch looks reasonable. Though it would be much preferable
to kindly ask the patch author about the upstream submission, and when
there is a commit in the upstream tree, think about SRUing it into (in
fact when asking, it would be best if the upstream submission had a cc:
sta...@kernel.org in the signed-off-by area to mark it as a fix for the
2.6.38.y stable tree). That way it won't become a potential problem in
11.10 again.

[Bug 765224] Re: import from mini.iso fails

2011-04-26 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Maybe, unfortunately, this code doesn't seem to be functional at the
moment as there's is a empty function with the same name as the previous
function. This causes it to fail. Maybe the function with code related
to Debian was supposed to be commented out or something. For this reason
I believe that the safest bet would be to comment out the call to this
function until we implement the reposync , if that's what's the function
for.

[Bug 771401] [NEW] Ubiquity disk requirements are excessive

2011-04-26 Thread Jonathan Carter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Through the Beta and RC releases, Edubuntu installed fine on my 8GB
virtual disks.

In the final isos, Ubiquity doesn't allow me to progress past the
initial checks page since I don't have 14.1GB free space available

We can specify that Edubuntu requires a 20GB disk in the release notes,
but this is suboptimal since there's no reason why it couldn't work just
as fine on a 10GB (or even smaller) disk.

I suspect this will affect other releases too.

[Bug 769873] Re: Launcher appears when switching between workspaces with fullscreen windows

2011-04-26 Thread andyetitmoves
Ah, looks like I am able to get the behaviour only when I set the key
bindings to Super+Left, Right etc. In fact, the behaviour doesn't seem
to be limited to switching workspaces, the Launcher intercepts any
Super+Key shortcut and shows up temporarily. This is probably because
its (default) keybinding is set to Super. If that's the case, two
questions:

1. Isn't a key binding of Super supposed to imply Super key Down + Up,
as opposed to Super key Down + Some other key?

2. I tried setting the key binding to something else, like Super+L, this
fixes the issue. However, now Super+L only shows the Launcher with the
icons, but not the entry box with the shortcuts / search results
displayed etc. I am not able to invoke that at all using a keybinding
unless its set to Super (the default), I have to click on the Ubuntu
icon at the top left every time.

I have attached a desktop recording showing the issue.

Ahhh. So any bug that's not easy to fix is invalid? Must be nice to
just arbitrarily call anything that you deem not easy as invalid. I
wish I could do that in my job.

I guess balancing a budget is also invalid (since it's never easy) and
so we should not bother and should just spend spend spend without regard
for income, yes?

Maybe LP needs a bug resolution called too much work for me or
something.

[Bug 770324] Re: DNS resolvers are not requested/learned from DHCPv6

2011-04-26 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
I tested this on my own system (where my router handles DHCPv6 and
DHCPv4, IPv6 going through a tunnel from tunnelbroker.net (Hurricane
Electric); I can see no issue.

As displayed in the attached screenshot, while I guess dhclient doesn't
explicitly request nameservers (or at least, not as clearly as in the
example capture from Fedora 14), the recursive nameserver option is
always listed and properly appears in NetworkManager and
/etc/resolv.conf.

This was on a brand new install from yesterday evening. At least, we can
verify it's not an issue in NM, although there may still be something to
be done for dhclient.

[Bug 770324] Re: DNS resolvers are not requested/learned from DHCPv6

2011-04-26 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
From the dhclient.conf manpage:

DHCPV6 OPERATION
The client does not yet have a default DHCPv6 Option Request Option
(ORO), nor has it been integrated with the 'request' and 'require' syn‐
tax above. It is neccessary to configure an ORO then.

 send dhcp6.oro 1, 2, 7, 12, 13, 23, 24, 39;

The above ORO will request both identifiers (server, client), the pref‐
erence, unicast, nameservers, domain-search, and FQDN(v6) options.

If you still have that Fedora14 install, can you confirm whether an oro
is specifically defined on that system, if it's indeed running isc-dhcp
4? I think it does, but this mostly depends on whether the dhcp rpm
package is installed; see 'rpm -q dhcp' if my memory serves me right.
