[Bug 776103] Re: package open-vm-dkms 2011.03.28-387002-0ubuntu2 fails to build against 2.6.39 kernels, due to missing linux/smp_lock.h

2011-06-11 Thread dj_palindrome
Nate, your efforts are much appreciated and I'll be following them with
great interest. While I still use the proprietary VMWare Tools [8.4.6
Build 385536] on my Ubuntu 11.04 guest [kernel 2.6.39-3], they seem to
be quite broken on Debian Sid [kernel 2.6.39-1].

I was quite sure they would still build on the rc7 kernel for which
Debian Unstable obliged me to create my own kbuild infrastructure (quite
educational for a novice).

Since the Debian version, even in Unstable, is quite ancient
[8.4.2-261024-1], I am becoming quite desperate.

Desperate enough to perhaps install an Ubuntu package on Debian ;-)

Cheers.

[Bug 784797] Re: [Natty] freshclam.conf has invalid characters and cannot be parsed

2011-06-11 Thread Scott Testerman
I purged clamav and freshclam, then purged downloaded packages. Then I
switched my mirror from the default U.S. mirror to anl.gov, and
reinstalled both packages.

On reinstallation, the freshclam dpkg configuration no longer has the
proxy info autofilled, and the final configuration file has no errors.
Looks like this was a case of a faulty package download, so thanks for
the verification!

Marking the bug as invalid.

[Bug 531912] Re: /etc/init.d/ssh seems to work, but actually upstart is used.

2011-06-11 Thread Clint Byrum
** Description changed:

While trying to get x-forwarding on Lucid to work, I edited
/etc/default/ssh to add the -4 flag, as offered as a work-around in
various bugreports. When trying to restart ssh using /etc/init.d/ssh,
all seems to work but my flags around passed to sshd.

It seems that ssh is actually managed by upstart, which is great, but
you cannot really tell. For other services, there are symlinks to
/lib/init, for ssh there isn't. So I assumed that ssh is still managed
  using /etc/init.d/

Please clarify the use of upstart (for ssh) for users, so they don't
spend hours trying to debug what shouldn't be debugged. :)
+
+ == SRU Justification ==
+
+ Impact: this bug causes quite a bit of confusion for users, which is
+ particularly troubling considering SSH is often the only way headless
+ systems can be accessed post-installation. The change will avoid the
+ half-in half-out situation that some people are dealing with where they
+ mix /etc/init.d/ssh with using the 'service' command or upstart
+ start/stop/initctl commands.
+
+ Dev fix: A check has been added to the included init.d script which
+ checks to see if it is being run in a chroot, and if not, it runs
+ /lib/init/upstart-job in much the same way it is usually run when
+ symlinked from /etc/init.d.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+
+ 1. start a system with openssh-server installed
+ 2. run 'sudo status ssh' to verify that ssh has been started by upstart.
+ 3. run 'sudo stop ssh' to stop the upstart job.
+ 4. run 'sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start'. It should start sshd without upstart.
+ 5. run 'sudo status ssh' to verify that the ssh upstart job is not running
+ 6. run 'sudo /etc/int.d/ssh stop' to stop the incorrectly managed sshd.
+ 7. install new package with patched init.d script
+ 8. repeat steps 2 through 4. now it should display a disclaimer like this:
+ Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
+ utility, e.g. service ssh start
+
+ Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
+ Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start ssh
+
+
+ Regression Potential:
+
+ There may be users who are expecting this script to work outside of
+ chroots. They would have to achieve this by modifying the start on or
+ removing the /etc/init/ssh.conf. The latter case is handled directly in
+ the code by checking for its existence. The former will also be handled
+ on reboot, but not on upgrades. The upgrade will cause the script to be
+ unable to stop any sshd that is running via the old method.

Re: [Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools

Excerpts from Oliver Brakmann's message of Fri Jun 10 21:50:55 UTC 2011:
 Thanks Clint!

I don't know if anybody has noticed this yet, but this problem exists in
Ubuntu only. The same package in Debian merely suggests: open-vm-
 toolbox.

Oh, and the changelog gives the reason why: LP #391224. I guess we have
 conflicting interests here.

Personally, I'd argue for dropping the recommends: back to a suggests:
 as well.

Good point Oliver.

With software center, I think a strong case can be made that there is
no good reason anymore. Searching for 'vmware' or 'vmware tools' or
'vmware guest' only shows toolbox, because software center defaults to
showing packages with a .desktop file. Synaptic and aptitude are both for
expert users who should be able to see why they didn't get GUI because
it clearly says that it is the command line tools.

[Bug 785171] [NEW] Samba works or may not work quite random

2011-06-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

1) When I click on Places/Network with the firewall disabled it usually shows
my other home computers and does a mount on my desktop when I click them. Once
mounted I can enable the firewall and access their shared files from the mount.
2) With all firewalls disabled I often get only the windows network icon and
it's empty. It was working as per item 1 last week and all that I've done is
to run the updates and updated all of a few hundred megs of stuff. I've been
fiddling with this on and off for ages and think I've got it fixed only to fall
down next time I use networks.

[Bug 776103] Re: package open-vm-dkms 2011.03.28-387002-0ubuntu2 fails to build against 2.6.39 kernels, due to missing linux/smp_lock.h

2011-06-11 Thread Nate Muench
Don't use the ones in Debian unstable because they're using a kernel
that requires a module (vmmemctl) in the Tools. The newer kernels (like
the ones in Natty/Oneiric) have said module in the kernel.

Also as of right now, the Stable Tools (and the unstable ones currently
in the repo) don't support the 2.6.39. Although, I guess Oneiric is
going with the 3.0 Kernel (I just check the packages Launchpad page).
So what I'm suggesting might be irrelevant.

As I said I've tried compiling the May 2011 release modules of open-vm-
tools, and even with the issues with the open-vm-toolbox, I got all the
modules SUCCESSFULLY compiled.

[Bug 795837] [NEW] Optical drive wont eject

2011-06-11 Thread Thomas Tanghus Olsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-generic

I've been wanting to ask for a long time but I very rarely use my optical
drive, so I haven't gotten around to it before I had to install on a new
box.
Since Maverick I've experienced that I can't eject my optical drive by pushing
the physical buttons, I have to use the 'eject' command. At first I thought it
had to do with faulty hw but now it's happening on another box too.
When I boot up in Windows XP (it came with the second hand box ;) it works OK
but as soon as I boot into Linux it doesn't; even at the grub menu.
dmesg has a lot of these entries in it:

[81078.265582] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 16
[81078.265586] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 17

[81078.273309] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 68
[81078.273312] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 17

It makes no difference if there's a medium in the drive or not.
The drive otherwise works just fine both for audio and data CD's.

I'm not quite sure which package this belongs to so I filed it under
'linux-image-generic' as it seems to be on kernel level.

[Bug 558674] Re: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid

2011-06-11 Thread Pausanias
You have got to be kidding me. What is the point of LTS then? I cannot
simply update my machine. I am running LTS in a production
environment. I am supposed to be relying on the vaunted rock-solid
stability of LTS. Lucid has several years to go in its life span.

It speaks volumes about Ubuntu's commitment to LTS that you would even
post that. If Canonical does not have the resources to support LTS
properly---especially for a bug where something as basic as the file
open dialog is malfunctioning in an insidious and potentially harmful
way---then do not support it at all. Do not make the claim of LTS.

[Bug 795838] [NEW] please drop dependency on libtunepimp5-mp3

2011-06-11 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-restricted-addons

The kubuntu-restricted-addons package depends on libtunepimp5-mp3, a
package which was split from libtunepimp5 in an Ubuntu delta for no
reason I was able to discern. I have therefore merged libtunepimp5-mp3
back into the main package in oneiric, with the hope that we can be back
in sync with Debian following the next LTS release. libtunepimp5 now
Conflicts/Replaces/Provides libtunepimp5-mp3 for a smooth transition,

[Bug 771905] Re: No logo at boot on nvidia card

2011-06-11 Thread Stephen Warren
Psychotron's workaround of adding GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text to
/etc/defaults/grub works for me.

Alternatively, another option that works for me: Find the following pre-
existing text in /etc/defaults/grub:

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

and remove the initial # character from the second line:

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
GRUB_TERMINAL=console

(and run sudo update-grub after either change)

I can confirm that resizing at 1/5 of the original size can cause the
appearance of some artifacts.

I have tried with the sizes you have been using, and with an original size of
1000x1000.
I have also tried with a 1200x1200 picture resized to 200x200, and the same
problem occurs. Maybe the range is wider than you thought, as it also happens
around a 1/6 ratio.

Also, it seem to occur only with white. I haven't been able to reproduce
the bug if the image is filled with another color.

Cheers.

[Bug 795078] Re: No quit (as opposed to hide) option when sound menu integration is on even when music paused in Ubuntu Classic/Gnome UI

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
Hi,

That same page, Sound Menu - Compliance, states:

A compliant player should also keep playing if you close its window
while it is playing; exit if you close its window while it is not
playing; and remember exact state across sessions, so that after
exit and relaunch it is as if the player had never exited. (Emphasis
mine)

I pause the music (so it's not playing) and go to look for quit option,
but it's not there.

Now you may argue that pausing is not stopping.. but from what I
understand, the stop button was also removed (no preference to show it
again either as far as I can see). So, I try another trick, I tick Stop
when finished in the playback menu, and then cue a song through to just
before the end. The player finally goes into idle state..

Still no quit option.. when it's been stopped. Close the window.. It
doesn't exit if you close its window while it is not playing.

So, with all due respect, the application does not follow that policy
page quoted.

An end user shouldn't have to invoke something external to the program
UI if they want to terminate the program. Sounds like we're entering the
realm of old Torment and Stay Resident TSR programs..

Further down on the same page it also states:

Banshee should be altered to comply with the standard behavior: it
should keep playing if closed while playing, ***it should exit if closed
while not playing***, and it should restore location and other state on
relaunching.

Or is someone playing a semantics game with exit?

the Flash plugin on each of the systems and whether the video works on
each of the systems.

Can you also post the output of
ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
?

[Bug 795078] Re: No quit (as opposed to hide) option when sound menu integration is on even when music paused in Ubuntu Classic/Gnome UI

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
ok.. I'm man enough to admit when I've misdiagnosed something..
Though it's still not quite matching documented behaviour.

If I pause, it quits but stays in the sound menu, but it doesn't resume
from where it stopped. I swear the process was still running - perhaps
it's because I switched back and forth from notification area plugin and
something got toggled.. Either way, I guess you can close this ticket
again.

[Bug 795851] [NEW] software-center doesn't look inside packages for icons

2011-06-11 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

When displaying package lists, or information about a specific package,
software-center looks in a number of directories for a suitable icon to
display for that package, e.g. the /usr/share/pixmaps and /usr/share
/app-install/icons directories. It does not, however, look inside the
package itself at the files it will install, for icons that would be
installed into those same directories. This means that an installed
program will get an icon displayed (if it installed the icon itself) but
an uninstalled program will not. Additionally, when upgrading, the
*old* icon will be displayed, rather than the new replacement icon in
the package.

Also, none of the icon behaviour appears to be documented anywhere. I
gleaned the above by reading the python source code. Documenting the
icon behaviour would allow developers and packagers to know how to put
icons into their packages (icons they use for their projects and web
sites) in order to have them displayed correctly in GUI-based package
installer programs, such as software-center. (I expected to find
something in the Debian Policy Manual, but it only speaks about app
menus.)

[Bug 795851] Re: software-center doesn't look inside packages for icons

2011-06-11 Thread Peter Miller
The more I think about it, the more it would appear that all packages
who's icons are present in app-install-data should have a packaging bug
against that application. Why don't these packages install their own
icons? Looked at it from this perspective, that the app-install-data
package exists at all is evidence of a problem in GUI package
installers, such as software-center, not looking into packages to obtain
the appropriate icons for each package.

Found the problem, I guess.
I was using activeperl for development and I forgot to change to the native one
before issuing the command.

non posso saperlo, dato che il kernel di Ubuntu a volte contiene moduli non
ancora presenti nei kernel linux e potrebbe darsi che il prossimo aggiornamento
del kernel di Natty contenga ache questo fix.
Ciao

[Bug 795726] Re: package python-ubuntuone-storageprotocol 1.6.0-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: package python-ubuntuone-storageprotocol is already installed and configured

2011-06-11 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test.

[Bug 771905] Re: No logo at boot on nvidia card

2011-06-11 Thread BearT
To answer Stephen Warrens question (#25): Yes, I do see the Grub menu
and have multiple OS on my machine.

And secondly, yes, your workaround (#30) enabling GRUB_TERMINAL=console
does work for me. I'm fine with that, I really don't need the graphical
boot. I didn't try Psychotrons workaround (#29) since I am lazy and
Stephens was simpler. ;-) Thanks for that.
