[Blueprint server-o-jenkins] Get Jenkins into the Ubuntu Archive

2011-07-27 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  Current Status: Slow Progress

Jenkins and all dependencies are either now in the archive or waiting
for review in the NEW queue.

  UDS Session Notes

  Discussion:
    - Approach to plugins;
  - packaging recipe?
  Documentation to be polished
  - disable Jenkins upstream plugin manager?
Not by default but ensure can be disabled and that this is documented
well.
  - build from source?
where possible - look at most popular plugins and assess top 5.

    - Delivery approach:
  - Debian or Ubuntu first?
Ubuntu then Debian - will get better testing coverage if it hits
Oneiric earlier.
  - Sponsorship burden - large number of packages.
Target universe, spread the burden as wide as possible in Ubuntu.

    - Jenkins Nuances:
   - Package variants - OK
   - Hudson polutiom - OK

Target 1.400.1 when delivered by upstream.

  Work Items (oneiric-alpha-3):
[james-page] upgrade to latest stable branch (1.409.1) from Jenkins + upgrade
dependencies: DONE
[james-page] Resolve outstanding build-from-source issues in dependency
chain: DONE
[james-page] Prepare library packaging for upload to Ubuntu: DONE
upload of jenkins plus dependencies to Ubuntu Universe: INPROGRESS
[james-page] look at JVM compatibility with xstream on ARM (for example): TODO

[Bug 798934] Re: Lm-sensors's init script sets an unused variable

2011-07-27 Thread MatatTHC
I stumbled over this because I compiled lmsensors by myself but wanted
to use the provided init script. I changed the PROGRAM variable to the
alternative location and expected that it works.

If I set an variable then I expect that it is used. So its not a bug in
the sense that it does not work - changing it will not change this
situation - but improve the init script source code.

I'm sorry - per the rules listed in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates, only bugs which are =
high priority are eligible for SRU. If you feel this bug should be high
priority, please say so (with rationale) here.

An updated package for lucid through natty will be placed in the ubuntu-

alternative way to get this fix.

[Bug 524447] Re: virsh save is very slow

2011-07-27 Thread Jeff Snider
The page you referenced doesn't include anything that I can find about
the ticket priority level. It states that Stable release updates will,
in general, only be issued in order to fix high-impact bugs and
provides several examples. Among them is Bugs which do not fit under
above categories, [security vulnerabilities, severe regressions, or loss
of user data] but (1) have an obviously safe patch and (2) affect an
application rather than critical infrastructure packages (like X.org or
the kernel).

I submit that this is an obviously safe patch. The change is small,
simple, isolated, has been tested to work, and doesn't change any
interfaces. Is qemu-kvm considered a critical infrastructure package
or not? I don't know the answer to that, but I can see valid arguments
both for and against.

I also have an example of a potential data loss situation, though it is
admittedly somewhat weak. I'll spare everyone the narrative but I'll
share it if it would be helpful.

[Bug 817190] [NEW] other programs don't work right after installing guest machine drives

2011-07-27 Thread Edward
Public bug reported:

After installing ubuntu server and attempting to also install an ubuntu
client using virt-manager other things on ubuntu don't work right. The
volume indicator doesn't work. Firefox 6 menus don't work most of the
time (not sure if this is really a firefox issue). Gnome Alsamixer
doesn't keep the settings I give it. Maybe my hardware is not good
enough for kvm, and that would solve it, but kvm isn't running at the
same time as i am using these other things.

[Bug 817187] [NEW] change in readlink() errno in 2.6.39 and later kernels causes FTBFS for packages with older gnulib

2011-07-27 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

This is due to the following:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnulib/2011-03/msg00308.html

coreutils' make check failed on rawhide due to a kernel change
in how readlink and readlinkat treat the empty file name.
Before, they'd fail with ENOENT. Now, it's EINVAL.

This will affect more than libvirt, (see Debian http://bugs.debian.org
/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=630902) but the patch in the above bug can be
applied to gnulib/tests/test-areadlink.h to get these building again on
newer releases. This is SRU-worthy, as libvirt will not build once the
buildds are running newer kernels.

[Bug 817187] Re: change in readlink() errno in 2.6.39 and later kernels causes FTBFS for packages with older gnulib

2011-07-27 Thread Andy Whitcroft
This is a notty one. The behavour has indeed changed, ENOENT was the
previous return and now we return EINVAL. I do not have a POSIX manual
to hand, but the gist of the restriction is as below:

   Empty pathname
In the original Unix, the empty pathname referred to the current
directory. Nowadays POSIX decrees that an empty pathname must not be
resolved successfully. Linux returns ENOENT in this case.

It could be argued that the new behaviour is just as valid. A change is
however unhelpful. Especially as kernel behaviour is exposed in
chroots.

A quick review of other syscalls reacting to as a pathname tend to
now place readlink as an inconsistant outsider:

open(, O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
chmod(, 0777) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
  readlink(, 0x7fff794533c0, 2048) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)
stat(, 0x7fff79453330)= -1 ENOENT (No such file or

rename(, ) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or

unlink() = -1 ENOENT (No such file or

[Bug 817190] Re: other programs don't work right after installing guest machine drives

2011-07-27 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for reporting this bug. Could you please describe your
environment a bit more? You said 'After installing ubuntu server and
attempting to also install an ubuntu client using virt-manager' - did
you install both of those as kvm VMs? And did you have no sound issues
before you created these VMs? Which releases are you using for the VMs?

Can you give us the xml definition of the VMS? (virsh list to get the
VM names, then 'virsh dumpxml nameX' to dump the definitions)

If kvm did something to confuse your host's audio daemon, then
restarting it may fix it. Does rebooting the host fix your problem?

Thanks very much for the patch.

Just in taking a quick look I do notice no check for realloc failure.
Is that something you are willing to fix in the upstream patch? (or
deemed too-unlikely?)

[Bug 815089] Re: package open-vm-dkms 2010.02.23-236320-1 ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: open-vm-tools kernel module failed to build

2011-07-27 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for taking the time to submit this bug.

You are running on a backported 2.6.38 kernel. The open-vm-dkms package
compiles kernel modules which are very sensitive to ever-changing kernel
versions, so the stock lucid package cannot be made to compile for
future kernels.

I do believe a backport of open-vm-tools (see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports) to match the kernel
backports would be very appropriate. Submitting a request for that
would seem like a good idea.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2011-07-27 Thread Bryce Nesbitt
Using cron is hacky here. It can be too slow (thus the disk fills up), or
usless (such as on a laptop with no sessions getting generated).
How about something more dynamic with php counting dirty sessions, and cleaning
them up synchronously at the end of a session? Let php handle this, when php
needs to.

[Bug 524447] Re: virsh save is very slow

2011-07-27 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Serge - why do you think this can't be SRU'd? It's already been
accepted into lucid-proposed once, then verified, and the only reason
it's not in lucid-updates is that it got superseded by a security upload
before the 7-day testing period had elapsed.

If you made a new upload to lucid-proposed based on the new security
upload I see no reason why it couldn't be accepted and then copied to
-updates after it's been verified and the 7-day testing period has
ended.

Which releases are you using for the VMs? 10.10 32bit and 10.10 server

Can you give us the xml definition of the VMS? (virsh list to get the
VM names, then 'virsh dumpxml nameX' to dump the definitions)
attached. I will also try and locate this bug on launchpad where I
submitted it and add them as an attachment.
If kvm did something to confuse your host's audio daemon, then
restarting it may fix it. Does rebooting the host fix your problem?
Doesn't help. I also just tried reinstalling Gnome. I may also try KVM.

[Bug 816804] [NEW] gvfs-open exit code is 0 when file is not found and no default application is registred

2011-07-27 Thread MestreLion
Public bug reported:

gvfs-open exits with error code 0 (success) even when there is error.

The following conditions should exit with error code 0:
- File is not found
- File is found, but default application for opening it is not registred

Examples:
$ gvfs-open nofile.txt || echo NOT FOUND!
gvfs-open: file:///home/rodrigo/nofile.txt: error opening location: Error
stating file '/home/rodrigo/nofile.txt': No such file or directory

$ touch test.mdb ; gvfs-open nofile.txt || echo NO ASSOCIATION! ; rm test.mdb
gvfs-open: file:///home/rodrigo/nofile.txt: error opening location: Error
stating file '/home/rodrigo/nofile.txt': No such file or directory

In both situations exit code was 0, meaning success, even when gvfs-
open was clearly NOT successful. This makes gvfs-open hard to use in
scripts.

And the problem is even worse considering gvfs-open is used by xdg-open

A quick look at source code shows that it has a hardcoded return 0 in
main() function. The open() function is static void. Both could easily
be changed so open would be static int open(...), set a proper return
code, and main would test for it.

Using Maverick 10.10 64bits, gvfs 1.6.4-0ubuntu1.1

This bug also affects compiz - Awesome WM isn't the only one. This
seems to be triggered by multiple flash elements in open browsers, and
is a recent development (i.e. didn't happen when natty was first
installed).

[Bug 804880] Re: 3D graphics cause EQ overflowing on Sandybridge Desktop

2011-07-27 Thread DiegoRivera
This bug also happens when using nvidia hardware (GTX 580). 100% CPU
usage on Chromium when viewing flash videos after a while (i.e. youtube,
etc). Firefox is also affected which leads me to think that it could be
the flash plugin, not chromium or the video driver(s).

Also using a Logitech mouse - I've seen other threads where this is seen
as a contributing factor.

[Bug 816680] Re: new ubuntu 11.04 no wlan access

2011-07-27 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
To report the bug if you don't have Internet connection at all in the
affected system you can follow these instructions:

In the event that you have an issue with your Internet connection or
want to file a bug for another system you can still do this using
apport.

First, gather the information about the target system in a file:

apport-cli -f -p package name --save bug.apport

You will need to answer a few questions, which will vary depending on
which package the bug report is about. Relevant system information,
including the package name, is then saved on the target system, in the
current directory.

After copying it to a different system you can file that report using the
following command:
ubuntu-bug -c apport_file.extension

If this is to be added to an existing bug report, also use the -u option:
ubuntu-bug -c apport_file.extension -u bug number

[Bug 816807] [NEW] Upgrade of packages with conflicts results in removal instead of upgrade

2011-07-27 Thread tserries
Public bug reported:

Affected version: 0.7.94.2ubuntu6.2 (Lucid Lynx)

Upgrading a package may lead to partial removal of other upgradeable
packages.

Situation before upgrade:

Installed packages:
* A (version 1)
* B (version 1)

Available packages:
* A (version2, Conflicts: B ( 2)
* B (version 2)

If you run pkg.mark_upgrade() on pkg A (Version 1) package B will be
marked for removal instead of marked for upgrade.

Real life example:
Installed packages:
* libpcsc-lite1 (Version 1.5.3-1ubuntu4.1)
* pcscd (Version 1.5.3-1ubuntu4.1)

Available packages:
* libpcsc-lite1 (Version 1.5.3-1ubuntu4.2)
* pcscd (Version 1.5.3-1ubuntu4.2)

[Bug 480195] Re: update-notifier crashed with SIGSEGV in distro_cd_detected()

2011-07-27 Thread Robert Roth
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a
regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this
bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries
nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other
bugs you may find.

[Bug 798277] Re: $PATH does not contain /usr/games on Ubuntu Oneiric (11.10) - /etc/environment not sourced or environment not preserved

2011-07-27 Thread Yves-Alexis Perez
Well, it seems that it's not a good default, seeing the current bug. I
already gave the current defaults in Debian. We currently ship this
patch to tune the PATH depending on the user beeing root or not.

** Patch added: set default PATH
