[Bug 857294] Re: Creating hotspot leads to endless connect/disconnect loop
I found a workaround to this issue: - kill any running dnsmasq process. (or restart computer afterwards) - Disable IPv6 in the Hotspot settings. (IPv6: Ignore) - restart the Hotspot --- The default settings of the Hotspot in Oneiric are: - IPv4: Shared with other Computers - IPv6: Automatic When selecting IPv6: Ignore everything works as expected. [Bug 858102] [NEW] cgroup service prevents VMWare services stopping
Public bug reported: I recently discovered that I could not update VMWare Player - the phase of the uninstall that stops the existing services would hang and eventually the whole system would require a power reset. System would also hang on shutdown under normal operation. Uninstalling cgroup-bin libcgroup1 fixes both these issues. I have set up cgroups on my 10.04 system as per: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/alternative-to-200-lines-kernel- patch.html and this seemed to be working fine until I discovered this issue recently when the 2.6.32-34 kernel was made available. [Bug 858247] [NEW] Mounting SMB:// shares from a Mac, via GVFS, doesn't allow copying of data in either direction
Public bug reported: Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) changed Samba for Apple's proprietary SMB stack. This stack has incompatibilities with the default smb:// mount modes supported by Samba and Gnome VFS. If I mount the system via Nautilus, opening the location smb://computer/share, I can see the file list and navigate it, but I can neither copy to nor from the machine (error is NT_STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED, reflected in an error dialog with the message Function not implemented. If I mount the filesystem using mount.cifs, adding the options noserverino, nounix, sec=ntlmssp, then I can access all of the information fine on the far end. It is possible that this bug could go away if using Samba 3.6 - which fully supports SMB2 - but I've not been able to verify it because there are no Samba 3.6 packages for Natty or Oneric yet, and because I've been reluctant to roll my own Samba packages. [Bug 858493] [NEW] By default ntpd listens on all interfaces
Public bug reported: The default ntp configuration that ships with ubuntu has ntp listening on all interfaces when in most instances that's not needed. Adding the line: interface ignore wildcard to ntp.conf disables this and makes ntp only listen to localhost, which is enough for things like ntpq to still work. It would probably be even safer for it not to listen on any interfaces but that doesn't seem to be possible as interface ignore all seems to be completely ignored and interface ignore lo only disables localhost on ipv6. [Bug 858493] Re: By default ntpd listens on all interfaces
Pedro, I fail to see how this is a bug at all. ntpd is a network service, and while it would be a nice enhancement to the packaging to have a low priority debconf question to ask if the user would like to disable network capabilities, there are plenty of users who will want it to listen on the network and respond to time requests. Also you may be surprised to see that ntpd doesn't actually *respond* to requests from ip's other than 127.0.0.1 or ::1 clint@clint-MacBookPro:~$ ntpq 192.168.1.105 ntpq peers 192.168.1.105: timed out, nothing received ***Request timed out ntpq ^D clint@clint-MacBookPro:~$ ntpq 127.0.0.1 ntpq peers remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter == +host2.kingrst.c 204.9.54.119 2 u 261 1024 377 84.351 -7.327 9.672 -vf1.bbnx.net128.4.1.12 u 223 1024 377 155.919 14.811 9.898 *ntp.yoinks.net 198.153.152.52 2 u 802 1024 377 50.601 -12.461 14.969 +ticker.pascogov 128.4.1.12 u 339 1024 377 78.144 -4.778 6.295 +europium.canoni 193.79.237.142 u 263 1024 377 165.478 -12.394 8.661 ntpq So its not actually all that important at all. [Bug 858493] Re: By default ntpd listens on all interfaces
What I was pointing out is that ntp listens to *:* when that's not actually needed to function as an ntp client. Here's an example from a server I was just setting up. With ntpd: $ sudo netstat -atpun | grep ntp udp0 0 myIP:123 0.0.0.0:* 31805/ntpd udp0 0 127.0.0.1:123 0.0.0.0:* 31805/ntpd udp0 0 0.0.0.0:123 0.0.0.0:* 31805/ntpd udp6 0 0 ::1:123 :::* 31805/ntpd udp6 0 0 myIP :::*31805/ntpd udp6 0 0 :::123 :::* 31805/ntpd with openntpd: $ sudo netstat -atpun | grep ntp udp0 0 myIP:5770688.190.225.228:123 ESTABLISHED 32455/ntpd udp0 0 myIP:46760188.40.33.81:123ESTABLISHED 32455/ntpd udp0 0 myIP:3374288.190.225.228:123 ESTABLISHED 32455/ntpd udp0 0 myIP:3462585.10.199.217:123 ESTABLISHED 32455/ntpd so it seems to be possible to have working NTP communication without opening up port 123 on all interfaces for everyone to connect. I assume that's why /etc/ntp.conf has all those restrict lines by default, whereas /etc/openntp/ntpd.conf only has server lines. I know ntp restricts responses to localhost by default so someone that wants to actually run an ntp server needs to change ntp.conf anyway. It might as well take the next step and not bind to the interfaces at all so as to not be a potential security risk. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/858493 Title: By default ntpd listens on all interfaces To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/858493/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 841489] Re: zsh version 4.3.11-4ubuntu2.is.3ubuntu1 failed to build on armel
Fixed this problem and requested to merge. Could you review it? Merge proposal is following: ncurses splitted out tinfo library from ncurses at 5.9-1ubuntu1. However debian/rules script link with -lncurses(w) only. In dynamic linkage its no problem because libncurses(s) depends libtinfo.so. But static linkage in configure script occurs failure, because needs to list up all objects. Therefore this branch adds -ltinfo list link libraries at debian/rules to use --with-term-lib option. This is Ubuntu specific problem. In Debian sid, doesn't split tinfo library, doesn't needs link libtinfo.a. ** Changed in: zsh (Ubuntu Oneiric) Status: Confirmed = In Progress -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/841489 Title: zsh version 4.3.11-4ubuntu2.is.3ubuntu1 failed to build on armel To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zsh/+bug/841489/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files
See also comments #104 and #128. In parallel with the looping md5sum of everything in the 17G ecryptfs read-only partition described above, I picked one of the files that had produced different md5sums on different runs and wrote this script to repeatedly md5sum the same file over and over (filename shortened for clarity): #!/bin/sh -u # -Ian! D. Allen - idal...@idallen.ca - www.idallen.com f=filename set -- $( md5sum $f ) start=$1 while : ; do set -- $( md5sum $f ) if [ $1 != $start ] ; then echo $start != $* fi done Over the course of two days running my tests, the above script produced two outputs, indicating two times when that one file was read and had a different checksum from when the script started: c68292cceb13f21de7375c46c0ffdf9a != 58a90406649b9e795f9e1e6b34b806f8 filename c68292cceb13f21de7375c46c0ffdf9a != 58a90406649b9e795f9e1e6b34b806f8 filename This file is on a read-only ecryptfs partition. The md5sum should not be changing. I note that when the md5sum does change, it always changes to the same other value; it's not random. In my tests, the ecryptfs corruption seems to happen only when reading from files with more than one link. The file itself is 1132 bytes. [Bug 858046] [NEW] 11.04: external monitor not working from laptop
Public bug reported: Upgraded to 11.04 My laptop won't redirect output to an external monitor or a projector via the Fn+F8 key combination. This worked under 10.10 My laptop is a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop with a GeForce 8400M GS display card installed. The Ubuntu Display control panel won't detect a second display when the Detect monitors button is clicked. It also can't detect the laptop's own display type and labels it as Unknown. Using the Nvidia X Server control panel, I can see that the laptop's display is a Seiko/Epson panel and, when I click the Detect displays button I do get the second display (a flat panel monitor),but it is labelled: CRT-0 disabled. I've activated the drivers in the Additional drivers panel twice and used Synaptic to run Nvidia-update (followed by a restart). I still have This driver is activated but not currently in use in the Additional Drivers control panel plus, in the header, No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. I've regularly run all the system updates. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/858046 Title: 11.04: external monitor not working from laptop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/858046/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 405116] Re: hpcups driver of HPLIP has broken margins
On Fri, Sep 23, 2011 at 06:31:25PM -, Till Kamppeter wrote: Roger, note that I have done a lot of fixes and improvements on the Ubuntu package of which did not (yet) get adopted by HPLIP upstream. So these fixes are most probably not in the Gentoo package of HPLIP. Please report bugs in the bug tracking system of Gentoo and ask them to adopt these fixes for the Gentoo package. I spent the whole day trying to get the Ubuntu Live CD (oneiric-desktop-i386.iso 696M Sep 21 16:04) configured and setup properly to print to file, along with printing to printer. All tests showed this issue was only hacked around (or more politely, worked-around). Of all the prints I did using the hplip/gs HP-M1522NF postscript driver, I could only get postscript 2 files even after making sure postscript level 3 was set within the PPD files. This is completely WRONG! When an admin sets-up a printer to print PS Level 3, they should get PS Level 3 files and not PS Level 2 files. The very least that could be done, run the *.ppd files through sed or gawk to install a comment, # Even though PS Level 3 is stated here, PS Level 2 will be used (per bug# ...). And using the PCL HP-M1522NF still shows high page margins when printing (hence, top/bottom of the page might be cut-off). I even tried to modify this PCL ppd file per the related hplip bug, without success here. On a side note, I hope you enjoy constructive criticism. ;-) 1) The desktop ran amazingly slow for my 2x750Hz P3's w/ 1GB RAM. I'm using kernel 2.6.39 and 3.0 using nouveau and mesa-7.11 with gallium and I get really good desktop performance. I can't recall your kernel in this, but performance nouveau was looking good at kernel version 2.6.39 here, then I enabled gallium (3d excell) and can now almost play HD videos here. 2) As with Linus, I do not like the new GNOME or KDE at all. Gnome2 was pretty good, now I can't do anything. It's only focus is eye candy on fast cpu's and lots of memory. Productivity means able to scale on older h/w and get things done, if needed, put a picture of a flower on the wallpaper. And, there's so much MS Windows influence, I can't get anything done. 3) Because of the above, I had lots of problems navigating the desktop, and as usual, opened a terminal but still had problems as Bash didn't recognize tab-completion on the first tab (can't remember if this was default or not). And then, I had to keep clicking in each tabbed terminal to regain focus. 4) Top menu bars of windows ended up at the top of the desktop, while the windows were placed elsewhere. Resizing windows was difficult because the mouse had too small of a movement for resizing the window. 5) Installing the printer was completely non-intuitive. I remember to use CUPS local server, but most distro's have their own configuration GUI for configuring everything (ie. Mandrake/Mandriva). I would at least put a link along with an initial libnotify event stating To configure your printer, click me... and then open Mozilla to the CUPS local server page. However, one first needs to configure their local network. 6) Configuring local network card, again non-intuitive. A user somehow must know to right click on what looks like a network card icon to some, and select configure. Again, I was expecting a separate tool. To fix, use libnotify or prompt on top of the toolbar network icon to say, Click me to configure network. 7) One thing I see consistently between Gentoo's LiveCD (KDE) and this Ubuntu's LiveCD (GNOME?... which I perfer against KDE), whomever is designing it, thinks the icons they're designing are intuitive. They are, by far, not! When I click this red icon in the corner of a window, I don't expect it to try logging me out of a desktop session! A lot of icons don't have mouse-over details. Although, I do enjoy the artistic abilities of the desktops, art/looks is only 5-10% of a users requisites for using a desktop! 8) Installing additional software didn't show anything telling me it was installing or had installed the software. Long 15m+ pauses of nothing. I then used the terminal to tab-complete the program's name to find if it installed. 9) sysvinit rewrite, openrc seems way better -- especially when doing it old style: /etc/init.d/cups restart! Ubuntu complains every time an expect does something like this at the keyboard. This is too funny. If I had to profile the desktop GUI's today, I'd say they're being sabotaged by ex-Microsoft coders whom really want they're maximize window icons on the window widgets w/ start menus! When I build, I build from the ground and not from the top down. Tonight, I'm sure going to be cuddlying-up with my terminal keyboard and Thanking God for them! Best design, give people a basic functioning desktop to begin with. If they want more eye-candy, give them an option letting you boast about what you want the desktop to look like. There's already prompt for language, might as well add one more to the GUI

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files
Since you have identified a specific file which seems to be read in two different ways, it might be useful to capture the actual content of the file in each case (not just the md5sum values) and see if there is any discernible pattern to the corruption (e.g., extraneous trailing nulls in one of the two versions). And if the corruption happens only with files that have more than one hard link, this might help explain why some people have not reported seeing the problem. [Bug 848864] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffb4ff
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue. However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request. We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not. If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.
