[Bug 889028] [NEW] upgrade to tomcat6 6.0.28-2ubuntu1.5 failed

2011-11-11 Thread B.J. de Hoop
Public bug reported:

The installation of the security update of tomcat6 failed with the
message:

Setting up tomcat6 (6.0.28-2ubuntu1.5) ...
sed: -e expression #1, char 130: unknown option to `s'
dpkg: error processing tomcat6 (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 tomcat6
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

When investigating the problem in the post-installation script of
tomcat6 (added -x to /bin/sh) I found that the error was caused by a
JAVA_OPTS option, set in /etc/default/tomcat6, which contained forward
slashes (because it specified a path). Which caused the sed commando in
line 23 in /var/lib/dpkg/info/tomcat6.postinst to fail.

Line 23:

sed s/^JAVA_OPTS=.*$/JAVA_OPTS=\$JAVA_OPTS\/ \

evaluated to:

sed s/^JAVA_OPTS=.*$/JAVA_OPTS=-Djava.awt.headless=true -Xmx2048m

[Blueprint servercloud-p-cloud-image-testing] Ubuntu Server Cloud Image Testing

2011-11-11 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  Summary of Objectives for Precise

  1) Daily Smoke Testing of Ubuntu AMI's
  Triggered from cloud image query information.
  Should cover all images.
  Check that they boot.
  Verify each AMI once only.

  2) Daily AMI testing for the development release
  Precise should implement daily image testing using basic smoke test to ensure
that the AMI is always usable during the development cycle.

  3) Daily Testing of Cloud Images
  In addition to the published AMI's, we should implement testing of the
generic cloud images on the following cloud platforms:
  Eucalyptus
- Eucalyptus Community Cloud?
+ Eucalyptus Community Cloud?
  OpenStack - including KVM and LXC and Xen
- Canonistack?
- FreeCloud (NTT and RackSpace)?
+ Canonistack?
+ FreeCloud (NTT and RackSpace)?

  4) Full Testing of Release Ubuntu Images
  Automated testing will be built into the twice weekly image release
publishing process and will cover:
- a) An initial smoke test
- b) Followed by full image testing
+   a) An initial smoke test
+   b) Followed by full image testing
  Testing will likely be implemented using Jenkins and published to

[Bug 883201] Re: Several second hang on ssh login

2011-11-11 Thread Joel
I've tracked the problem down to something DNS related. But I'm still
not sure exactly what the issue is.

Other people seem to be having the problem as well, for a couple of
Ubuntu releases at least. The instructions for fixing the problem on the
internet say to set UseDNS = no in client sshd config (this is silly
and does nothing of course), and then to add the server hostname in
/etc/hosts (which is actually what fixes the problem).

Troubleshooting reveals the following interesting facts:

1) The problem does not occur with IP addresses or FQDNs. So 'ssh
servername.domain.com' or 'ssh 192.168.0.2' is fast but 'ssh servername'
is slow.

2) 'host servername' is consistently fast, and the only search line in
/etc/resolv.conf is 'search domain.com'

3) The root user does not experience this issue.

4) Normal users with all userland config wiped (.bashrc and
.bash_profile) still experience the issue.

5) The problem is not reproducible with any other network tool other
than ssh. Ping, telnet, wget, etc., do not experience any DNS-lookup
hang.

So what is ssh doing special with regards to DNS that other network
tools don't do?

[Bug 674390] Re: 1:5.5p1-4ubuntu4 (scp host:ns_sys_config) problem

2011-11-11 Thread Mike Mackintosh
I am able to duplicate this issue, with Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10, it is
also affecting Debian Sarge and Squeeze.

debug1: Authentication succeeded (password).
debug1: channel 0: new [client-session]
debug1: Entering interactive session.
debug1: Sending environment.
debug1: Sending env LANG = en_US.UTF-8
debug1: Sending command: scp -v -f -- /ns_sys_config
debug1: client_input_channel_req: channel 0 rtype exit-status reply 0
debug1: channel 0: free: client-session, nchannels 1
debug1: fd 0 clearing O_NONBLOCK
debug1: fd 1 clearing O_NONBLOCK

The issue is that the remote devices are not full SSH/SCP capable devices and
register the -- after -f as a filename, which does not exist.

[Bug 674390] Re: 1:5.5p1-4ubuntu4 (scp host:ns_sys_config) problem

2011-11-11 Thread Mike Mackintosh
I downloaded the enw version of SSH:

http://filedump.se.rit.edu/pub/OpenBSD/OpenSSH/portable/openssh-5.9p1.tar.gz

I extracted and searched the source for `-f --`

The -f is a hidden flag to tell the host to expect a file, but I cannot
find any documentation as to what the -- is for.

i did a search and replace on -f -- to -f in scp.c in the extracted
directory.

I ran make and make install.

From the new SCP binary, the -f -- no longer was issued, only -f.

Issue was resolved for me. I can submit a patch in a moment.

[Bug 869684] Re: 530 login incorrect error after upgrade to Oneiric

2011-11-11 Thread Robie Basak
I have been unable to reproduce this both on a fresh installation of
Oneiric and on an upgrade from Natty (using cloud images). In both cases
I added a password to the ubuntu user, installed vsftpd from the
archive and successfully FTPd into it using ftp, connecting to both
localhost and to the IP assigned to eth0.

Duane, thank you for your very comprehensive and useful bug report.
Could you please confirm that /lib/security/pam_shells.so does not exist
on your problem system, and let me know if /lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/security/pam_shells.so exists instead?

Re: [Bug 795717] Re: 32bit rhel and centos 5.(5|6) hangs on boot on natty

2011-11-11 Thread Clint Byrum
Excerpts from nutznboltz's message of Fri Nov 11 16:53:52 UTC 2011:
 How long does this take to show up?

 $ curl http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/ 2 /dev/null |
 grep 38-13.52 | egrep -v 'diff|dsc' | sed 's/^.*deb//' | sed 's;/a.*$;;'

 linux-libc-dev_2.6.38-13.52_amd64.deb
 linux-libc-dev_2.6.38-13.52_i386.deb
 linux-source-2.6.38_2.6.38-13.52_all.deb
 linux-tools-common_2.6.38-13.52_all.deb

I'm not sure what you're waiting for, Herton suggested that 2.6.38-13.52
is the version with the fix.

[Bug 886953] Re: smbstatus does not reliably detect that a samba connection is in use.

2011-11-11 Thread Bob Harvey
Copied from my reply upstream:

OK, installed that. It does force a disconnect.

The first time I try to reconnect I get an error Unable to read, presumably
the client doesn't know its friend has died. The second time I connect OK.

Not been able to try that with a windows client, but it does resolve the
problem with the ubuntu client.

[Bug 888662] Re: Web browsers should share the cache

2011-11-11 Thread Fred
Axel Beckert wrote:
 It actually is a good _idea_, just not a very realistic one. :-(

Stallman once wanted to create a free software operating system.
Many would say that it is not a very realistic idea.

Many maybe would say the XDG standard was a good idea, but not a very realistic
one.
Now plenty of applications save under ~/.config/

If there is a will, there is a way.
For starters, browsers which share the same cache format could have their
directories symlinked.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-ceph] Preparing CEPH for main inclusion

2011-11-11 Thread Clint Byrum
Blueprint changed by Clint Byrum:

Whiteboard changed:
  Work Items:
  [canonical-kernel-team] investigate large xattr support patch from Ted T'so
in ext4
  [canonical-kernel-team] potentially help push large xattr support to ext4
  [canonical-server] confer with kernel-team to decide on which to recommend,
ext4/xfs/btrfs
  [canonical-server] define Ubuntu supported configurations of CEPH
  [canonical-server] improve ceph charms
  [canonical-server] integrate ceph charm with openstack charms
  [canonical-server] libvirt changes needed
  [canonical-server] MIR ceph
- [hallyn] enable rbd and rados in qemu-kvm builds
+ [serge-hallyn] enable rbd and rados in qemu-kvm builds
  [nijaba] correctly message technology preview for non-supported bits
  [canonical-server] investigate apache + 100 continue support for rados S3 GW
  [canonical-server] push nagios and collectd plugins into
Ubuntu/Debian/Upstream
  [canonical-server] setup automated build recipe against upstream source
  [canonical-server] import upstream test suite into archive
  [sconklin] ext4/btrfs/xfs testing in QA

  No formal spec needed IMO, this is just a pile of straight forward
  TODO's.

   * gceph is not reasonable to be in main (upstream doesnt want to
  support)

  Today rbd is loaded loaded at runtime

   - MIR librbd and librados for qemu/kvm
    - compile qemu-kvm with ceph (rbd, rados) block device support, see:
    - https://launchpad.net/~kirkland/+archive/virt/+packages
   - MIR all of ceph for hosting ceph
   - include latest libvirt rbd support (for rbd authentication)
   - Existing Openstack Support
     - Nova since cactus can use CEPH for block
     - Diablo added glance support for CEPH for image storage
   - Dreamhost using mainline BTRFS and debian kernel for current deployment
  - Dreamhost launching at scale in a few weeks
  - CEPH is an independent business unit under Dreamhost
  - Dreamhost using fastcgi + apache for rados gateway (can use nginx, too)

   Dependencies:
   modfast-cgi
  Concerns;
  - Upstream makes a release every 2 weeks
  - No stable release branches upstream
  - Limited deployment outside Dreamhost
  - unencrypted over the wire
    - apps can implement security on top of it
    - IPv6 is supported
  Additional Opportunities:
  - Integrate tightly with OpenStack in packaging
  - Add support for ceph in juju openstack charms
  - BTRFS ideal, XFS also working well, ext4 missing large xattr support
  - Upstream asserts that CEPH is under heavy development (cmdline programs
remind user at every execution)
   - in the openstack use case, for kvm, there is no need for kernel code at all
    - if we want to support xen, it would require using the block device kernel
code for rdb
  Support Targets:
  - RBD

One of the patches for this long-living bug has been described here more than a
year ago:
http://groups.google.com/group/gnu.utils.help/browse_thread/thread/bb530eb072f86e18/83599c4828de175b

The only thing that remains is to make this fix arrive in Ubuntu. All
the versions up to oneiric, maybe even precise might be affected.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2011-11-11 Thread John Moodie
Unloading unity plugin and decorator makes no difference in my case.
64 bit with fglrx (Catalyst 11.10).

With top running in a terminal;

1: Open a browser, type a non-existent address in, such as
http://non-existant-garbage.com
Compiz and Xorg cpu usage spikes to about 50% and 40% respectively and will
continue to remain there until the browser request is cancelled (or until there
is no spinning load icon or mouse pointer change or the windows is minimised)

2: Open software centre and install a program. Compiz and Xorg will
spike and remain high until the program has installed and there is no
spinning progress icon in the top bar.

Sounds like a polling issue?

instead we know it should report between 20 and 40% depending by the
moment of the day.

[Bug 888901] [NEW] gtk_progress_bar_set_fraction with certain values causes text to disappear

2011-11-11 Thread Reece H. Dunn
Public bug reported:

I have the following layout:

GtkWidget *progress = gtk_progress_bar_new();
gtk_progress_bar_set_show_text(GTK_PROGRESS_BAR(progress), TRUE);

GtkWidget *elapsedTime = gtk_label_new(00:00:00.0);
GtkWidget *totalTime   = gtk_label_new(00:00:00.0);

GtkWidget *hlayout = gtk_hbox_new(FALSE, 4);
gtk_box_pack_start(GTK_BOX(hlayout), elapsedTime, FALSE, FALSE, 4);
gtk_box_pack_start(GTK_BOX(hlayout), progress, TRUE, TRUE, 0);
gtk_box_pack_start(GTK_BOX(hlayout), totalTime, FALSE, FALSE, 4);

GtkWidget *layout = gtk_vbox_new(TRUE, 0);
gtk_box_pack_start(GTK_BOX(layout), hlayout, FALSE, FALSE, 0);

That I update periodically:

gtk_progress_bar_set_text(GTK_PROGRESS_BAR(progress), Text);
gtk_progress_bar_set_fraction(GTK_PROGRESS_BAR(progress), fraction);

gtk_label_set_text(GTK_LABEL(elapsedTime), 00:00);
gtk_label_set_text(GTK_LABEL(totalTime), 00:00);

If fraction is set to certain values:

double fraction = 0.003033; // bad
double fraction = 0.004; // bad

the text in progress and totalTime fails to display in the Ambiance and
Radiance themes, while it does display in the Adwaita and High Contrast
themes.

Other values:

double fraction = 0.003; // good
double fraction = 0.005; // good

the text renders without a problem in all themes.

Asunto: [Bug 574250] Re: SAMSUNG N150 Laptop : Brightness issue

11.10's kernel at least does ship the samsung-laptop module, so the
samsung-backlight package from voria's PPA is not necessary any more.
udev also ships the necessary rules, and this bug is marked fix
released. So from a maintainer's point of view there was/is nothing
further to do here.

  Bug description:
  I have just bought a Samsung N150 laptop, very nice netbook.
  As I am a Ubuntu user since 2004, I directly replace Windows seven with the
latest Ubuntu version (Lucid Lynx 10.04).

  I notice a systematic issue about screen brightness :
  - The brightness is full when when laptop start with power supply plugged,
otherwise the brightness is half. When i try to adjust the brightness using
special keys it doesn't work.
  Up to now, I have found on Ubuntu forum many guys relating the same behavior
and i pickup a workaround. I use it until the fix will be available : sudo
setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=50

[Bug 857813] Re: onboard doesn't show on lock screen in 11.10 beta 2

2011-11-11 Thread marmuta
Works as intended on my fresh install. The toggle in preferences does
turn it on and off in the unlock screen. Also Onboard shows up there
right after its first launch.

Once it's in there, it doesn't go away on its own though. It's still in
the lock screen when I turn off the osk in universal access settings. It
can be turned off manually in preferences, but perhaps ultimately
something other than Onboard should toggle the gsettings key embedded-
keyboard-enabled in sync with screen-keyboard-enabled?

[Bug 888783] Re: package evolution-common 2.28.3-0ubuntu10.3 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: package evolution-common is already installed and configured

2011-11-11 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test. If this does resolve your bug please set its status to
Invalid.  Thanks in advance!

[Bug 888906] [NEW] sushi conflicts with search in nautilus

2011-11-11 Thread S.O.E. Ansems
Public bug reported:

Normally when typing text in nautilus a small entry box appears and the
selection will jump to the file with the 'best match' (i have no idea how to
call this feature)
With sushi installed, the spacebar will always do a preview, so it can no
longer be used in aforementioned feature. Also the backspace key will not
remove the last typed character, but make nautilus jump a folder higher.
sushi seems to not work nicely with nautilus...

** Affects: gnome-sushi (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 888906] Re: sushi conflicts with search in nautilus

2011-11-11 Thread S.O.E. Ansems
Ah yes:
What i expect to happen is that sushi will refrain from showing previews when
nautilus is 'jump searching' so the space- and backspace keys are not
intercepted by sushi.
