[Bug 884908] Re: Package dependencies need work

2011-11-24 Thread James Page
** Description changed:

   SRU Justification (Marc Cluet)

- TEST CASE:
- 1. Install mcollective-middleware, it won't install mcollective
- 2. Install mcollective-clients, some of the plugins will fail due to the lack
of rubygems, libsystemu-ruby or ruby-json
+ TEST CASE 1:
+ 1. sudo apt-get install mcollective-middleware
+ 2. mcollective is not installed - it should be as this package wraps
mcollective and rabbitmq into a single installable unit.
+
+ TEST CASE 2:
+ 1. sudo apt-get install mcollective-client
+ 2. sudo mc-find-hosts - will fail with the following error message:
+
+ /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/mcollective.rb:1:in `require': no such file to load --
rubygems (LoadError)
+ from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/mcollective.rb:1
+ from /usr/sbin/mc-find-hosts:3:in `require'
+ from /usr/sbin/mc-find-hosts:3

  REGRESSION POTENTIAL:
It's just adding missing dependencies, regression potential almost 0 since we
don't incur in any other changes.

  COURSE OF ACTION FOR ONEIRIC:
  Add the missing dependencies.

  1. Add mcollective in mcollective-middleware package so it installs the
missing daemon
- 2. Add rubygems, libsystemu-ruby or ruby-json on mcollective-clients package
in order to
+ 2. Add rubygems, libsystemu-ruby or ruby-json on mcollective-clients package
in order to fullfil missing dependencies

   SRU Justification

This is actually a bug report for mcollective, mcollective-middleware
  and mcollective-client.

The package dependencies need to be looked at because as they stand now
on Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric, they are not correct.

What I have discovered so far is:

mcollective-middleware need to depend on mcollective, otherwise the
  directory /etc/mcollective is not created.

At least mcollective-client needs to depends on 'rubygems'. Without it you
receive the following:
  $ mc-find-hosts
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/mcollective.rb:1:in `require': no such file to load --
rubygems (LoadError)
  from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/mcollective.rb:1
  from /usr/sbin/mc-find-hosts:3:in `require'
  from /usr/sbin/mc-find-hosts:3

I believe mcollective-middleware also needs to depend on rubygems,
because the above error was replaced with silence after installing
rubygems. Once I restarted the mcollective service, silence was replaced
  with the correct functionality.

Please let me know if you need more information.

  Peter

# sensors-detect revision 5946 (2011-03-23 11:54:44 +0100)
# System: ASUSTeK Computer INC. 1005HA (laptop)

This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need
to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. It is generally safe
and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions,
unless you know what you're doing.

Some south bridges, CPUs or memory controllers contain embedded sensors.
Do you want to scan for them? This is totally safe. (YES/no): yes
Module cpuid loaded successfully.
Silicon Integrated Systems SIS5595... No
VIA VT82C686 Integrated Sensors... No
VIA VT8231 Integrated Sensors...No
AMD K8 thermal sensors... No
AMD Family 10h thermal sensors... No
AMD Family 11h thermal sensors... No
AMD Family 12h and 14h thermal sensors... No
Intel digital thermal sensor... Success!
(driver `coretemp')
Intel AMB FB-DIMM thermal sensor... No
VIA C7 thermal sensor...No
VIA Nano thermal sensor... No

Some Super I/O chips contain embedded sensors. We have to write to
standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe.
Do you want to scan for Super I/O sensors? (YES/no): yes
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x2e/0x2f
Trying family `National Semiconductor'... No
Trying family `SMSC'... No
Trying family `VIA/Winbond/Nuvoton/Fintek'... No
Trying family `ITE'... No
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x4e/0x4f
Trying family `National Semiconductor'... No
Trying family `SMSC'... No
Trying family `VIA/Winbond/Nuvoton/Fintek'... No
Trying family `ITE'... No

Some hardware monitoring chips are accessible through the ISA I/O ports.
We have to write to arbitrary I/O ports to probe them. This is usually
safe though. Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any
ISA slots! Do you want to scan the ISA I/O ports? (YES/no): yes
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM78' at 0x290... No
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM79' at 0x290... No
Probing for `Winbond W83781D' at 0x290... No
Probing for `Winbond W83782D' at 0x290... No

Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware
monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works
reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble
on some systems.
Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no): no
Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done.
Just press ENTER to continue:

Driver `coretemp':
  * Chip `Intel digital thermal sensor' (confidence: 9)

To load everything that is needed, add this to /etc/modules:
#cut here
# Chip drivers
coretemp
#cut here
If you have some drivers built into your kernel, the list above will
contain too many modules. Skip the appropriate ones!

Do you want to add these lines automatically to /etc/modules? (yes/NO)yes
Successful!

Monitoring programs won't work until the needed modules are
loaded. You may want to run 'service module-init-tools start'
to load them.

Unloading cpuid... OK

[Bug 894377] Re: mysql-server failed to upgrade to Precise. mysql main process (4700) terminated with status 7 respawning

2011-11-24 Thread Clint Byrum
Nov 24 13:39:32 ubuntu mysqld[448]: 24 13:39:32 [ERROR]
/usr/sbin/mysqld: unknown variable 'lc-messages-dir=/usr/share/mysql'

lc-messages-dir is a MySQL 5.5 only variable, and came from

mysql-common 5.5.17-4ubuntu4

It would seem then that mysql-common from 5.5 needs to declare that it
breaks mysql-server-5.1 so that they are configured and replaced in the
proper order.. mysql-server-5.1 will be removed in 12.04, but we need to
make sure the upgrade is handled properly.

We should also think about changing the automated tests to test
upgrading *mysql-server* not *mysql-server-5.1* since 12.04 will have
mysql-server-5.5.

Marking Triaged, changing title to reflect what the real problem is
(that 5.1 needs to be removed from 12.04). Marking Importance High and
targetting to alpha2.

** Changed in: mysql-5.1 (Ubuntu Precise)
   Status: New = Triaged

** Summary changed:

- mysql-server failed to upgrade to Precise. mysql main process (4700)
terminated with status 7 respawning
+ mysql-server-5.1is deprecated for mysql-server-5.5 in precise, should be
removed once transition is complete

** Changed in: mysql-5.1 (Ubuntu Precise)
Milestone: precise-alpha-1 = precise-alpha-2

[Bug 607039] Re: NFS4 automount using replicated servers doesn't work

2011-11-24 Thread Stefan Bader
@Steve, this seems actually already to be addressed. Unfortunately in a
way that is easy to get wrong. The nfs module would for example be
autoloaded when the idmapd gets started. And the /etc/default/nfs-common
comments clearly say it should be needed for v4. However one seems to be
able to get a mount done without it being set to yes. (Probably running
into other issues later). It would be good if there would be a way to
get those things right in a simpler way. But I cannot think of a good
one right now. Should mount.nfs4 start required daemons? But then that
may miss sensible configuration...

[Bug 894608] [NEW] Implementing a bridge slows 10G network

2011-11-24 Thread Mike Imelfort
Public bug reported:

Installing bridge-utils and then setting up a bridge in
/etc/netwrok/interfaces decimates my netwrok speed. Uninstalling the
package and doing a reboot restores the speed.

This bug was originally posted here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/861141 but I now realise it is
bridge-utils specific.

Hardware:
I have two identical machines (DELL poweredge R815), each with Broadcom
NetXtreme II BCM57711 10-Gigabit PCIe connected via a 10G switch.
Each machine runs 4 socket 12 core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6174 and 128GB of
ram

Software:
Both machines ar running ubuntu server 10.04 lts Kernels are:
Linux whitlam 2.6.32-28-server #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 23:57:16 UTC 2011
x86_64 GNU/Linux
Linux fraser 2.6.32-28-server #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 23:57:16 UTC 2011
x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have installed iperf on both machines.

The tests here involve running whitlam as the iperf server and fraser as the
client.
On whitlam I run:
bioadmin@whitlam:~# iperf -sm

On fraser I run:
bioadmin@fraser:~# iperf -c whitlam -d

before installation I get:
bioadmin@whitlam:~# iperf -sm

[ 6] 0.0-10.0 sec 10.6 GBytes 9.11 Gbits/sec
[ 6] MSS size 1448 bytes (MTU 1500 bytes, ethernet)

Which is nice.

Next I run:

sudo aptitude -y install bridge-utils

and then I add a bridge to the interfaces file like thus:

FROM:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface

gateway xx.xx.xx.1

dns-nameservers blah blah

And restart networking

sudo /etc/init.d/netwroking restart

Which results in:

Note that the connection from the machine with bridge-utils installed
(fraser) to the other machine (whitlam) is not affected. Only the
connection from whitlam to fraser.

Both machines are fresh installs with nfs-common, iperf installed.
Fraser also has bridge-utils

Any help is very much appreciated!

[Bug 607039] Re: NFS4 automount using replicated servers doesn't work

2011-11-24 Thread Steve Langasek
mount.ntfs4 certainly shouldn't start any daemons, but I would expect it
to autoload the nfs4 module the same way it previously autoloaded the
nfs module.

BTW, for 12.04 we always start idmapd automatically; but if using
autofs, it's still not guaranteed that idmapd will have started before
autofs starts.

[Bug 894265] Re: Black screen, sometimes flashing screen when starting ubuntu

2011-11-24 Thread Phil. V
Thanks for your bug report. This sounds like a kernel problem to me, so I'll
file it against the kernel. The kernel team will need some additional system
information in order to diagnose the problem, however. Please run the following
command in a terminal to attach relevant system information to this report, and
then change the status of this bug to confirmed:
apport-collect 894265

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 894221] Re: sound does not work . synaptic manager does not open - two separate issues

2011-11-24 Thread Phil. V
Thanks for your bug report. Since there are two separate issues here, I'll make
the focus of this bug report the sound problem, and ask that you open a
separate bug report for your problem regarding synaptic. Did your sound work in
11.04? Also, could you please run the following command in a terminal so we can
get some system information attached to this report:
apport-collect 894221

For your bug regarding synaptic please use report it using 'ubuntu-bug
synaptic' in a terminal so that appropriate system information is
already attached. Also, please file that bug against 'synaptic', as,
like bug bot said, it is important that bugs be filed against source
packages.

[Bug 880476] Re: after update to kernel 3.0.0-13 ubuntu 11.10 does not start

2011-11-24 Thread Silvio Bierman
@NVIDIA users: Andre is right, it has something to do with the graphics
driver. I was already on 290.10 but it does not seem to be the version
itself. After reinstalling the 3.0.0-13 kernel the boot problem
persisted. Then I booted in recovery mode and reinstalled the same
NVIDIA driver. After that everything works like a charm.

Perhaps this has anything to do with my installing a newer NVIDIA driver
myself?

[Bug 894274] [NEW] Bluetooth mouse lag on Dell Notebooks

2011-11-24 Thread entonjackson
Public bug reported:

My Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000 (which is a Bluetooth Mouse) is lagging
a lot in 2 cases:

-On heavy WiFi traffic
-More Bluetooth Devices are connected, e.g. a phone.

This problem occurs on a Dell Vostro 1510 with a bluetooth dongle:
ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)

And also on the Dell Precision M4400 with BT device:
ID 0a5c:4500 Broadcom Corp. BCM2046B1 USB 2.0 Hub (part of BCM2046 Bluetooth)

While BT Mouse lags, touchpad works normally.

Actually, i don't know where the problem comes from. but i think it's bluez.
to me, this bug is critical, because very annoying.

I hope it gets fixed soon, because new users to ubuntu could be
frightend off because of bugs like this.

I'm using Oneiric 64bit, but this happened also on Natty x86 and i think
on Maverick x86 as well.

Thanks so much for your valuable contribution to this bug report.

Guys, since I get X for free, I’m not expecting anything, and think it’s
really nice of you to do this work. But I’m not talking about
implementing some colorful clickables or display bling. I’m talking
about one of the most basic features. So basic it has its own ISO
standard. And also about 50 lines of code. Max.

What I meant to say is, that if it were my code, and yes I am a
professional programmer for 20 years now, I would be ashamed of
overlooking something like this. It’s a thing of pride. Maybe because I
see it as more fundamental than you.

I would also love to submit a patch. If the thing weren’t written in that
horrible horrible excuse of a programming language called C. I know lots of
languages, including Haskell (my favorite and main languages), but I have no
intention in torturing myself with C-like languages.
Maybe if the thing was written in Haskell or OCaml, there would be more free
time…

Whatever. Maybe I’ll save 50€ and send them to you to implement it. 1€ a
line should be enough, no? ;)

Well, either we are rubbish programmers with no pride, or are simply too
busy with the other 2.532 million (I just checked) lines of code that X

So what you're saying is that you're not going to help, but instead sit

easy. Helpful!

(Oh, and Windows 2000 may have had Ctrl+Shift+[codepoint] for generating

2011-11-24 Thread Freedesktop-org
Daniel, Jeremy, please don't feed a possible troll. Just take his badly-
worded comment as another ++ vote for the feature and be done with it.
It would be a shame if this feature were ignored due to a single troll's
heckling.

In fact, let's look at it another way. I am willing to learn C and fix
this issue if a current X dev will mentor me. I'm serious. Of course it
would take _more_ time to fix the bug this way, but then X gains another
enthusiastic developer. I've done a simple C course in university and I
know a bit of PHP and Java. Are there any X devs who would mentor me
through this bug?

Thanks.

[Bug 531208]

2011-11-24 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Navid, please cease and desist from making unhelpful comments. I myself
would like to see this bug fixed soon, and I also do not have enough
C-knowledge to contribute a patch, and I do occasionally post hello can
anybody please fix this bug kind of comments to bug reports, but at
least I try to stay polite and *request* something of the developers who
obviously have a particular skill which I don't. It is my experience
that more often than not, developers are quite polite and at least
explain why the bug can't be fixed soon or something like that.

Now my polite request: can any of the kind developers fix this bug
please? I'm sure with your skills it would be a simple job if someone
just allocated a small amount of time to it?

After upgrading my Kubuntu system to Oneiric, the ibus stopped working
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/854333) so I'm falling back to
XIM which IMHO is much cleaner even if not context-sensitive. So I would
really like to see this soon. Thanks! :)

[Bug 531208]

2011-11-24 Thread Jeremy Huddleston
Dotan,

I'd love to help you learn C. My advise to you is to check out this course at
UC Berkeley designed to teach C to students who already know how to program in
another language:
http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~selfpace/class/cs9c

Most of the materials are available online. You just need to buy or borrow the
book, and you don't have access to the SPC tutors and obviously don't get a
grade or course credit. I used to tutor the course back in the day, so I'd
love to help you out if that means we'd have another X11 contributor.

But let's take this offline for now... just send me an email when you want to
get started and need some help/questions.

[Bug 531208]

2011-11-24 Thread Navid-zamani
(In reply to comment #11)

I look forward to your 50-line patch then.
As I said, I have no intention in learning a language as bad as C. I’d rather
rewrite the whole thing in a modern language. And I’d like even more to have
someone else do it, while I do some other contribution in return. How about
that? :)

Well, either we are rubbish programmers with no pride, or are simply too
busy with the other 2.532 million (I just checked) lines of code that X
 has.
So you’re essentially suggesting that it’s just extremely bloated? ^^
But hey, there doesn’t have to be a “or”. Usually the latter comes from the
former. ;)

So what you're saying is that you're not going to help, but instead sit
here banging on about pride and how Windows 2000 did it and it's really
 easy. Helpful!
No, (Windows * still sucked). I was saying:

Maybe I’ll save 50€ and send them to you to implement it. 1€ a line
 should be enough, no? ;)

But I already see where this is going: Straw man arguments: First you
deliberately misinterpret my statements, and then you call me an idiot
because of them. Sorry mate, that won’t work. ^^

(In reply to comment #12)

Hey Navid, have you learned C yet?
Maybe the Navid in your delusional parallel world where I didn’t say I despised
C did.
Why don’t you check?

In all honesty, I don't expect this to be 50 lines, and I don't expect
it to be popular enough to demand attention over higher priority
issues.

Well, if it doesn’t take 50 lines, something is deeply wrong with the
code. Then again it’s C and it’s 2.532 million lines of it, so that
kinda answers that. ^^

PROTIP: Quick sort in Haskell:

  qsort (x:xs) = qsort [ i | i - xs, i  x ] ++ [x] ++ qsort [ i | i - xs, i
= x ]
  qsort [] = []

50 lines? Hell yeah! ^^

I have no interest in the typical Internet dicks calling everyone who isn’t
fitting their mind a “troll”. So you can fail with your archaic C, bloat, weird
priorities and distorted perception until the end of time.
Actually it’s a good thing, because the more you’re ignorant of the unfolding
reality, the more those who don’t gain an edge over you. So, hey… in a way
you’re still helping me. Thanks!
And good bye. ^^

2011-11-24 Thread Dilfridge
From the Gentoo bug report:

--- Comment #8 from Lu Ran hephooey_...@fastmail.fm 2011-04-23 19:42:50 UTC
---
I have a W510 with amd64 Gentoo, exactly the same anonying bug, I did some
research and I think it is a bug in the kernel, though upower handle data
differently from hal thus exposed the bug. Here is the problem I find:

When I boot up normally, cat /sys/.../BAT0/charge_now gives me something like
this:

7517000

cat /sys/../BAT0/charge_full shows

9396000

Use the battery for a while, (I am not sure exactly how to trigger this
reliably though), the number beomes

6935

and

9396

Notice the extra 0! However upower only check charge_full once when it
starts, now it find energy calculated from charge_now is larger than
energy_full calculated from charge_full, it assume energe_full is wrong
and replace the value using energy calculated from charge_now.The battery
capacity become 100% for a while.

Now suspend/resume, the number from charge_now and charge_full becomes
normal again, but now upower have a cached energy_full calculated when
charge_now is 10 times larger. The capacity upower calculated will hardly be
larger than 10%.

[Bug 531190]

2011-11-24 Thread Sobukus
Well, then ... I really would like to see this issue resolved. I hope to
help with linking in some noise from users that somehow went into the
wrong channels (i.e., did not end up here):

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=509190
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upower/+bug/531190
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/665806

This is really a very annoying issue that is making Linux unusable on
some machines for a very long time now. At least somewhere in the
software stack there must be some kind of workaround, if the root cause
is flaky hardware.

Settling if/where there is a bug in upower would be a start.

[Bug 531190]

2011-11-24 Thread Richard Hughes
I'm pretty sure we work around the kernel bug in new releases -- the
problem was tat the kernel sometimes changed the reporting data units
between suspend and resume. If this doesn't work with a new kernel and
upower, than please reopen. Thanks.

[Bug 531190]

2011-11-24 Thread tlindvall
From this we can see that hardware and kernel reports right figures when
unplugging the powercord:
tarmo@tarmo-hpmini ~ $ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info
present: yes
design capacity: 2600 mWh
last full capacity: 2383 mWh

Here we can see how upower miscalculates remaining battery charge (time to

Could it be that upower uses very high charging rate as basis of calculation of
remaining time (seen in the first battery state)?
I agree with previous comments that this is a critical problem. This is
causing laptop being useless. When unplugging laptop goes to standby, when
waking up, it comes up but immediately hibernates etc... I hope there could be
some sort of patch for this version of upower, because it will be used in
ubuntu 10.04 for tree years (long term support). Is there any way I could help
in locating the problem?

[Bug 365943]

2011-11-24 Thread Yan Li
Created attachment 40902
Add JumpyCursorThreshold option patch v5

For those touchpads that don't support multi-finger or sending correct
finger width, the jumpy cursor problem is still there. One notable
example is the ClickPad found on Lenovo S10-3t whose ClickPad suffers
from this jumpy cursor problem very severely, because its buttons also
have sensible surface thus every time you click a button without lifting
another finger from the pad, such as when trying to drag a window or
select text, the cursor jumps, and renders the whole touchpad nigh
unusable.

(if you are wondering why Synaptics driver doesn't enable ClickPad mode
and limit the touch area thus ignore ABS sent from button area, it's
because those ClickPads send out BTN_LEFT and BTN_RIGHT just as normal
touchpads so they don't trigger the ClickPad mode, which is designed for
ClickPads that never send BTN_RIGHT)

Therefore Alberto Milone's JumpyCursorThreshold option patch is still
needed, which is the best solution I've seen so far. I've attached the
new patch I ported to head. I've tested it in MeeGo and it works very
well (with Threshold set to 250).

Thomas, according to two comments up, it looks like only a small corner
case is left.

Also, Yan, you should bring up your patch for discussion on xorg-devel.
