2011-12-14 Thread Dave Walker
Blueprint changed by Dave Walker:

[canonical-kernel-team] potentially help push large xattr support to ext4

+ integrate ceph charm with openstack charms

+ investigate apache + 100 continue support for rados S3 GW
+ push nagios and collectd plugins into Ubuntu/Debian/Upstream
+ setup automated build recipe against upstream source
+ import upstream test suite into archive
  [sconklin] ext4/btrfs/xfs testing in QA

No formal spec needed IMO, this is just a pile of straight forward
  TODO's.

   * gceph is not reasonable to be in main (upstream doesnt want to
  support)

Today rbd is loaded loaded at runtime

   - MIR librbd and librados for qemu/kvm
    - compile qemu-kvm with ceph (rbd, rados) block device support, see:
   - MIR all of ceph for hosting ceph
   - include latest libvirt rbd support (for rbd authentication)
   - Existing Openstack Support
     - Nova since cactus can use CEPH for block
     - Diablo added glance support for CEPH for image storage
   - Dreamhost using mainline BTRFS and debian kernel for current deployment
  - Dreamhost launching at scale in a few weeks
  - CEPH is an independent business unit under Dreamhost
  - Dreamhost using fastcgi + apache for rados gateway (can use nginx, too)

   Dependencies:
   modfast-cgi
  Concerns;
  - Upstream makes a release every 2 weeks
  - No stable release branches upstream
  - Limited deployment outside Dreamhost
  - unencrypted over the wire
    - apps can implement security on top of it
    - IPv6 is supported
  Additional Opportunities:
  - Integrate tightly with OpenStack in packaging
  - Add support for ceph in juju openstack charms
  - BTRFS ideal, XFS also working well, ext4 missing large xattr support
  - Upstream asserts that CEPH is under heavy development (cmdline programs
remind user at every execution)
   - in the openstack use case, for kvm, there is no need for kernel code at all
    - if we want to support xen, it would require using the block device kernel
code for rdb
  Support Targets:
  - RBD

[Bug 115475] Re: tproxy support (iptables squid)

2011-12-14 Thread chrone
i'm sorry for this long testing your package Amos, didn't have the time
to play with.

i'm using oneiric and your squid3 package right now. started squid with
http_port 3128 and http_port 3129 tproxy.

i assume do we have to compile the kernel for oneiric? or is it support
out of the box?

i will try to compile the kernel tomorrow, and should i need to
recompile iptables too? i only want to use it as not transaparent, but
has the ability to ip spoofing ip client to mikrotik router only.

[Bug 903901] Re: [Lucid] backport fix for ITS#6458

2011-12-14 Thread Robie Basak
Peter, could you please complete the SRU justification? Guidelines at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure - thanks!

** Description changed:

  The problem:

Replication fails if an attribute of a multi-value attribute entry is
removed if the attribute does not have a equality matching rule defined
  in the schema.

The problem can be mitigated temporarily by a doing a full re-sync by
removing the affected database and restarting the service to trigger a
  full sync.

This is fixed upstream beginning with the slapd 2.4.25 branch:

openldap-2.4.25/CHANGES: Fixed slapd syncrepl for attributes with no
  matching rule (ITS#6458)

For Ubuntu, this translates to the fix appearing in Oneiric:

  slapd | 2.4.21-0ubuntu5.6 | lucid-updates
  slapd | 2.4.23-6ubuntu6.1 | natty-updates
  slapd | 2.4.25-1.1ubuntu4 | oneiric-updates

I am requesting the fix be backported at least to Lucid.

  Upstream bug:

http://www.openldap.org/its/index.cgi/Software%20Bugs?id=6458;selectid=6458;usearchives=1
+
+ SRU Justification:
+
+ [Impact]: TBC
+ [Development Fix]: Fixed in an upstream release and thus already present
since Oneiric
+ [Stable Fix]: lucid-proposed.debdiff, attached - patches taken from upstream
git repository
+ [Test Case]: TBC
+ [Regression Potential]: looks to be minimal from looking at the patch. There
appears to be a comprehensive test suite that continues to pass with this patch
applied.

[Bug 611194] Re: No secure way to protect against MiM attacks

2011-12-14 Thread Scott Moser
This appears to be fixed in boto at http://codereview.appspot.com/4425052/ .
That went into trunk ~ April 18 of 2011, which was prior to boto 2.0 release
(which is in 11.10).

I've done some remedial testing and verified that a ~/.boto file with the
following reads the packaged boto file
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/boto/cacerts/cacerts.txt (a symlink to
/usr/share/pyshared/boto/cacerts/cacerts.txt).

--- ~/.boto ---
[Boto]
https_validate_certificates = true

I've also verified that if you do something like:
  [Boto]
  https_validate_certificates = true
  ca_certificates_file = mycacerts.txt

and populate mycacerts.txt with some garbage, you will get something like:
$ euca-describe-instances
[Errno 1] _ssl.c:503: error:14090086:SSL
routines:SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE:certificate verify failed

[Bug 904410] [NEW] Mailman configuration script causes syntax error in /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py, line 76

2011-12-14 Thread Ben Johnson
Public bug reported:

# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
Release:10.04

# apt-cache policy mailman
mailman:
  Installed: 1:2.1.13-1ubuntu0.2
  Candidate: 1:2.1.13-1ubuntu0.2
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.1.13-1ubuntu0.2 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:2.1.13-1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

The problem is that the Mailman configuration script that is included
with the package fails to insert the default Mailman language string
into /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py, line 76, which causes a
syntax error. This syntax error makes it impossible to work with the
package (reinstall, remove, etc.), because every attempted operation
chokes.

Here is the full log of the terminal output:

If I examine the file and line cited in the error message, there is no

This is despite the fact that I chose a valid language (English) from
the list that is presented during installation by highlighting said

The only means by which I was able to remove the package was to fix
problem by editing /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py directly and
changing the line in question to:

DEFAULT_SERVER_LANGUAGE = 'en'

The attachment lucid-proposed.debdiff of this bug report has been
identified as being a patch in the form of a debdiff. The ubuntu-
sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can
review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. In the event that this is in
fact not a patch you can resolve this situation by removing the tag
'patch' from the bug report and editing the attachment so that it is not
flagged as a patch. Additionally, if you are member of the ubuntu-

I've got to say I can sympathize with the objection - 'restart' from the

introduced with 'restart' command in /sbin.

2011-12-14 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.

The upgrade failed because the system was unable to stop the running
mysqls.

Could you do

   sudo service mysql stop

then do 'ps -ef | grep mysql' and see whether mysql is still running?
If it is not, then re-try the update. Otherwise, please show us the
result of both the 'service stop' and 'ps -ef' commands.

[Bug 115475] Re: tproxy support (iptables squid)

2011-12-14 Thread Amos Jeffries
You should not have to recompile the kernel if its accepting connections
through TPROXY properly. Double-check the IPs squid is identifying as
the client IP though to make sure that arrival is happening correctly.

We found a small bit alignment bug in the 3.2 series not setting the
spoof flag correctly on some systems, which caused this same behaviour.
I thought 3.1 was okay but I will take a closer look later today to
double check whether 3.1 has a similar regression.

[Bug 904480] [NEW] change default networking to virtio in Ubuntu packaging

2011-12-14 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

rtl8139 is the default network adapter provided in openstack instances.

That is very slow compared to virtio. The only reason you would want it
would be for backwards compatibility.

I believe that right now is the time to change that to virtio. If we
wait until after 12.04, we may, in 14.04 actually have a large corpus of
users who would have broken images by changing that default. Right now
there are comparably a very small number of users/amis that would not
support virtio.

[Bug 881464] Re: [MIR] keystone

2011-12-14 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I have performed a shallow security audit of keystone. The code audit
was not deep because Keystone is very young and developing very fast.
/what-is.html. With that said, here is my review:

Package review:
- Does not run as root
- Has test suite in the build
- Listens on all interfaces by default, on ports 5000/tcp and 35357/tcp (admin
interface)
- Documentation on keystone is scant and there are no manpages for the binaries
shipped in keystone
- no sudo fragments
- no DBus services
- no setuid/setgid binaries
- By default, does not use ssl. Since access to keystone is necessarily over
the network and considering that Keystone/Nova/Glance/Quantum bits are likely
on a trusted network (though they should use SSL as well), the most important
bit seems to be the User to Keystone interaction, as that is where the password
is passed and the token used by the other services is received. If the password
or token is snooped then an attacker can do everything as that user.

Code review
- no privileged operations
- no processes spawned
- file handling seems sane
- keystone-control has, which shouldn't strictly be a problem because of Yama,
but should be fixed regardless: os.environ['PYTHON_EGG_CACHE'] = '/tmp'
- correct example uses of ssl does not seem to be present.
/etc/keystone/ssl.conf is shipped, but this is an example for tests and is
confusing. /etc/keystone/keystone.conf has comments for how to use SSL, but
only if using a local CA. It would be much better if it were commented to also
include a section on using SSL with a proper CA from ca-certificates
- Doesn't seem to be any input validation on 'marker' in
get_marker_limit_and_url() from keystone/controllers/__init__.py. It isn't
clear at this time if this can be used for SQL injection, but 'marker' is
passed unvalidated from get_marker_limit_and_url() all the way to
session.query() (part of sqlalchemy) in endpoint_get_by_tenant_get_page() from
endpoint_template.py.

Recommendations from security team for MIR approval:
- provide documentation for keystone, especially man pages
- provide documentation on how to correctly use SSL certificates, not just
snakeoil or self-signed with your own CA (manpages and server documentation
ideally)
- fix the /tmp file issue
- perform input validation an all variables returned in
get_marker_limit_and_url() (keystone/controllers/__init__.py) or demonstrate
where this is already being performed (and therefore why this is not needed)

Ideally, Ubuntu would also have tools or adjust packaging to properly
configure keystone for SSL, with helpers for the various other openstack
services utilizing keystone so all could also benefit. Since keystone is
an identity service and a key component of openstack, it begs the
question why it would be used without SSL at all. ssl-cert may be
helpful here.

[Bug 894377] Re: mysql-server-5.1is deprecated for mysql-server-5.5 in precise, should be removed once transition is complete

2011-12-14 Thread Clint Byrum
Thanks pitti.

I've fixed a few of them. facturlinex2 is quite broken and only works
with libmysqlclient15, and so should probably just be removed from the
archive until upstream supports MySQL 5.5.

** Also affects: facturlinex2 (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: facturlinex2 (Ubuntu Precise)

[Bug 115475] Re: tproxy support (iptables squid)

2011-12-14 Thread chrone
i checked through mikrotik routeros, when the client accessing internet,
it used the squid ip address (192.168.1.142), not the client
(192.168.3.97). the squid is running the latest version of ubuntu 11.10
oneiric with your squid patch.

Just added the comment above and it crashed again. The screen freezes

Is there another way to find the log, rather than netconsole?
