[Bug 912212] [NEW] package samba 2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.3 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: package samba is not ready for configuration cannot configure (current status `half-installed') - vers

2012-01-05 Thread Guy Attfield
Public bug reported:

I broke the if it ain't broke, don't fix it life rule.

I'm a Linux neophyte who built a 'silent' home office 'server' to unload
a creaking WinXP laptop used for both home and business and to provide
an 'always-on' Internet facility. The idea, which was starting to work
well, was to transfer everything onto the Linux server (running 24/7)
leaving the laptop with just synced copies of client files plus a few
legacy Windows applications for which I have yet to find suitable Linux
counter-parts.

Enabled automatic release upgrade (as explained in the relevant notes) -
from a pretty standard 10.04.3 LTS installation that was working
perfectly. The successive upgrades were incredibly lengthy (over 3
day/nights), stopping repeatedly with incomprehensible questions about
replacing various system files about which a non-expert will know
nothing. Some idiot decided that failure of a user to respond promptly
to one question should be punished by an imitation of a fire alarm - not
funny at 2:30 am this morning! In a commercial environment the
consequences could have been far more serious.

Apart from samba, I do not yet know what else doesn't work.

I do appreciate that Ubuntu is free and depends on the hard work of
volunteers. From my experience, it is clear that updates across
intermediate releases is a complete non-starter and should be actively
DIScouraged in the documentation instead of the impression being given
that it's a painless way of moving to a later release.

[Bug 912254] [NEW] Please upgrade to 8.3.12 for Precise

2012-01-05 Thread Numérigraphe
Public bug reported:

DRBD 8.3.12 was published recently and makes DRBD more robust in the face of a
network or storage failure.
Furthermore, DRBD 8.3.12 will probably be the last 8.3.x revision, because 8.4
is out.
I think that makes it a good candidate for inclusion in the upcoming LTS, so
would you please consider upgrading the DRBD packages?

[Bug 912254] Re: Please upgrade to 8.3.12 for Precise

2012-01-05 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Hi Lionel,

Given that DRBD is in mainline kernel since 2.6.33, we no longer
maintain DKMS for DRBD. Now, given that the LTS still has the kernel
module for DRBD 8.3.11, the userspace tools will continue to have the
same version unless the final kernel uses the latest version of the DRBD
kernel module.

I'll keep this bug open though. Thank you for your interest and taking
the time to report this.

Cheers.

[Bug 858644] Re: DRBD Linux Headers Required

2012-01-05 Thread Roy Lee
Hi,

I attempted it on Lucid 10.04.3, but I don't remember what version it was, and
have purged it some months back.
Just attempted to apt-get install it, and now it prompts for the necessary
packages (binutils build-essential cvs debconf-utils debhelper dkms dpatch
dpkg-dev drbd8-source fakeroot g++ g++-4.4 gcc gcc-4.4 gettext html2text
intltool-debian libc-dev-bin libc6-dev libcroco3 libfile-copy-recursive-perl
libgomp1 liblzma1 libmail-sendmail-perl libstdc++6-4.4-dev
libsys-hostname-long-perl linux-headers-2.6.32-33
linux-headers-2.6.32-33-generic linux-headers-generic linux-libc-dev
manpages-dev patch patchutils po-debconf update-inetd xz-utils) so I guess you
can consider it resolved.

Thanks!

2012-01-05 Thread Guy Attfield
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 877852 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877852

Bug 877852 is recorded as a duplicate of 862129 for which
afix was released on 2011-11-29.

So my problems today either mean that fix doesn't work or
it's not a duplicate.

In fact, samba seems to be working: from my Windows (XP)
laptop, I can still access the shared files on the Ubuntu
server and Windows recognises the networked printer. I
can't find the Windows PC on the server, but with the
difficulty finding anything hidden under 'Dash', that too
may be working.

As it happens, I'm so disillusioned with the slow speed of
11.10 and it's Vista-clone GUI that I'm going to do a clean
re-install of 10.04 LTS tonight. A lot of work to get back
a fast reliable working system, but at least I know that's
what I'll have. I have no confidence that 11.10 will
readily provide either the reliability (it shutdown once
already without warning) or the functionality that I depend
upon as a business user. The lesson is clear: only upgrade
to LTS releases and then only 6-12 months after initial
release. When I retire in April 2013, I shall have the time
to install Pangolin on an old spare PC to explore the
cumbersome 'Dash' GUI at leisure before I risk the server again.

Blueprint changed by Ben Howard:

Whiteboard changed:
  Rationale:
  S3 is a faster, more scalable technology that allows us to reduce costs and
increase availability for EC2 users.

  Assumption:
    * Running on-EC2 mirrors is expensive and presents availability challenges.

[Bug 569757] Re: NIS upstart dependency broken for lucid

2012-01-05 Thread Clint Byrum
Twbecker, can you try the packages in my PPA on oneiric? The postinst
seems to be failing for people, but I need some help debugging it as it
works fine for me. It appears to fail when trying to start the service,
so the output of 'start nis' would be particularly useful after the
failure.

[Bug 569757] Re: NIS upstart dependency broken for lucid

2012-01-05 Thread Twbecker
I have a colleague that ran into the issue on Oneiric, I don't have a
box handy to test it on. I'll relay this request to him though. My
real interest is getting this fixed for 12.04, which I and several other
colleagues are planning on moving to when it's released.

[Bug 871966] Re: FQDN written to /etc/hosts causes problems for clustering systems

2012-01-05 Thread Scott Moser
Jason,
  I would actually like to not pull the fix back to oneiric. As doing so would
break people using oneiric who were expecting the behavior that is present
there now. At very least we have to think seriously about it and come up with
a list of what types of users would be affected. Do you have any thoughts?

Maybe some eucalyptus specific code did?

[Bug 912066] Re: /etc/fstab contains incorrect device for swap partition when no ephemeral disk present.

2012-01-05 Thread Scott Moser
Kiall, could you collect the ec2 metadata from inside such an instance?

python -c 'import boto.utils, pprint;
pprint.pprint(boto.utils.get_instance_metadata())'

Basically, i suspect that the metadata is stating that swap is at
/dev/vdc, so cloud-init is trusting it.

if that is the case, we either have to :
 a.) go searching for swap
 b.) fix nova metadata service

and 'b' seems like the right fix, as the MD is clearly wrong.

[Bug 912588] [NEW] mount.ocfs2 doesn't accept mount option uhelper=udisks

2012-01-05 Thread Warwick Bruce Chapman
Public bug reported:

Scenario:
3-node Ubuntu AoE*/OCFS2 Cluster on Ubuntu Server sharing disks with Ubuntu
Desktops

Node 1: Oneiric ubuntu-server amd64 with disk shared using AoE and formatted
and clustered with OCFS2.
Node 2: Oneiric mint-desktop i386
Node 3: Oneiric ubuntu-desktop amd64

Background:
1. Initially implemented AOE to share disks in node 1 (SAN) formatted XFS
2. Needed to access FS on disks from more than one Ubuntu desktop client
3. Implemented OCFS2 cluster and formatted one disk (label Backup) in node 1
with OCFS2 to test

Problem:
4. Mounting the disk using Nautilus fails with the following error thrown by
Nautilus:
Unable to mount Backup
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: mount.ocfs2: Invalid argument
while mounting /dev/etherd/e2.0p1 on /media/Backup_. Check 'dmesg' for more
information on this error.

dmesg includes the following:
Jan  6 02:06:52 anthracite kernel: [ 8672.067816]
(mount.ocfs2,27208,1):ocfs2_parse_options:1512 ERROR: Unrecognized mount option
uhelper=udisks or missing value
Jan  6 02:06:52 anthracite kernel: [ 8672.067824]
(mount.ocfs2,27208,1):ocfs2_fill_super:1233 ERROR: status = -22

As I understand it the uhelper=udisks mount option relates to the disk
showing up in the Devices section of Nautilus.

Further:
5. Creating a mount point and mounting the drive using the mount command works
fine and it still shows up in the Devices section of Nautilus:

mount -L Backup /media/Backup/

Synposis:

6. It would thus appear that mount.ocfs2 does not support this mount
option. This is understandable given that OCFS2 is used heavily in
server-only environments and not in sharing for use by Linux desktop
machines.

7. However, such use cases will surely increase and it should be trivial
to add support for this mount option.

Thanks very much.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-php54] PHP 5.4 for Ubuntu 12.04

  Question:
  Does this require discussion or just rubber stamping? -- Daviey

  Answer:
  It is not entirely clear whether 5.4.0 will be sufficiently similar to 5.3.x
to include in this release. The more conservative approach is just to ship
5.3.9 or 5.3.10 and leave 5.4.0 for 12.10, but the PHP community is interested
in weighing in on the issue and I'd also like to hear the security team's take
on the matter.

Re: [Bug 873984] Re: mod_tls and mod_sftp complain about OpenSSL version mismatch

2012-01-05 Thread Stefano Rivera
Hi sanitycheck (2012.01.05_07:31:07_+0200)
 The issue appears to be that any Ubuntu system with a working proftpd
 setup will be broken by an 11.10 distribution upgrade.

But the issue we are discussing is the OpenSSL version mismatch
warning. Which I'm asserting can be ignored.

You may need to make other changes to your proftpd configuration, but
that's not unusual.

[Bug 636936] Re: Export the number of plural forms as specified in the imported PO file's header

2012-01-05 Thread Robert Collins
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 228719 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228719

I believe this to be a dupe of bug 228719 - we export a plural form
definition, but then simply skip forms that are not in LP's database of
translations. I'm marking it a dupe accordingly.

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 228719

[Bug 912153] [NEW] cannot unmount sshfs mounts when ssh connection is lost

2012-01-05 Thread Jarl
Public bug reported:

The description is from
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728467, I consider the
description very comprehensive, so I grabed it.

fusermount -u do not work after a broken ssh connection. The invalid mountpoint
is in a strage state that locks the ls command.

How reproducible:
always

---

Steps to Reproduce:
1.mount a remote ssh filesystem with sshfs
2.lost the ssh connection (wait for ``broken pipe or missing link errors, if
you quickly plus/unplug nothing happens), then replug the cable
3.try to umount the ssf filesystem with fusermount -u

---

Actual results:
1) I mount a distant folder:
su pierre;
cd ~; mkdir test;
sshfs some...@somewhere.com:/home/someone test;

This mount is sucessfull and can be tested
cat test/somefile; #WORKS
touch test/someotherfile; #WORKS

2) For some reason ssh connection is lost for a long time (a cat eat a wire, I
unpluged my ethernet cable or zombies from outer space decide to do so). Then I
repear the connection (re plug the cable and kill the zoombies).

3) LS FAILS (except for the user who has mounted the filesystem)

su root;
ll /home/pierre;
freeze the terminal (Ctrl +C do NOT work, but closing the terminal window and
opening a new one is a workaround).

Using autocompletion with tab tab freeze the terminal too.

su pierre;
ll /home/pierre;
drwxr-xr-x. 2 pierre pierre  4096  5 mai2010 Bananas
d?? ? ?  ?  ?  ? test

4) UMOUNT FAILS
su pierre;
fusermount -u /home/pierre/test;
fusermount: entry for /home/pierre/test not found in /etc/mtab

But fusermount lies:
cat /etc/mtab | grep test;
some...@somewhere.com:/home/someone /home/pierre/test fuse.sshfs
rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,max_read=65536 0 0

su -;
umount /home/pierre/test;
Terminal freezes but Ctrl +C works.

---

Expected results:
fusermount -u should unmount the filesystem, not freeze the terminal
ls should work
even if ssh is lost, the mounted folder must be in a state that do not generate
strage bugs.

 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 900566] Re: apt-get upgrade updates/reinstalls package with same version over and over again

2012-01-05 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
The problem is that Replaces: libqwt5-qt4-dev ( 6.0.0-) is rewritten
into Replaces: libqwt5-qt4-dev ( 6.0.0) by dpkg in the status file
and apt detects the difference... and thinks the package has changed.

Please drop that useless dash in the version.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 873435
   dpkg should not simplify version numbers in dependencies

** Summary changed:

- apt-get upgrade updates/reinstalls package with same version over and over
again
+ libqwt-dev should use 6.0.0 instead of 6.0.0- in Replaces field

** Package changed: apt (Ubuntu) = qwt (Ubuntu)

[Bug 873435] Re: package libqwt-dev - failed to upgrade

2012-01-05 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
It means someone changed the status without justification. This is a
dpkg bug but a rather minor one.

dpkg simplifies some versions like 0:1.0 into 1.0 or 1.0- into
1.0 but it should not do that to avoid the kind of problem described
here.

** Changed in: dpkg (Ubuntu)
   Status: Fix Committed = Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- package libqwt-dev - failed to upgrade
+ dpkg should not simplify version numbers in dependencies

** Changed in: qwt (Ubuntu)
   Status: Fix Committed = Confirmed

** No longer affects: qwt (Ubuntu)
