[Bug 723603] Re: vsftpd no longer supports both anonymous_enable and local_enable

2012-01-26 Thread atimonin
I've found out that this bug (and it is of cause a BUG) doesn't show up if all
configs for vsftpd are straight:
if shell is nologin, it should be /usr/sbin/nologin in /etc/passwd, it should
be mentioned also in /etc/shells, etc.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-hdp-hadoop] Ubuntu Server - Hadoop

2012-01-26 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  Status 20122501

Dev packages avaliable for hadoop, hive, pig and hbase in
  http://launchpad.net/~hadoop-ubuntu/+archive/dev

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hadoop-ubuntu/dev

  Target versions of Hadoop components:

  hadoop-0.20.205.0
  hcatalog-0.2.0
  pig-0.9.0
  hbase-0.90.4
  hive-0.7.1
  # the script I got from Hortonworks labels this as hive-0.7.1+ which includes
fixes to hive. - Yes - we might need to look at that - we should be able to
overlay the fixes if need be without rebuilding the entire project
  zookeeper-3.3.2

Q: Their website indicates they will use ambari as something
devops/juju-like. Clearly we want to use juju but have they made any ambari
assumptions?
A: No idea - one to ask Matt

  Package naming:

  hadoop
  hcatalog
  pig
  hbase
  hive

  Needs confirmation (conflicts with archive):

  zookeeper

  Assumptions:

Packaging will use bigtop as a base.
   - reuse of control file structure will help support bigtop packages in juju
charms as and when they support precise.
Java will NOT be rebuilt during the package build process.
Native libraries will be rebuilt during the package build process.
Q: What does this mean for the hive embedded in hcatalog (via
hcatalog-0.2.0/hive/external)? I'm guessing we just use the hdp-hive package we
create.
Patches may be required for native build components.
Debconf configuration in packages is useful for Juju charms and should be
applied where appropriate.
--- Debconf currently in use: namenode, jobtracker and hdfs_dir
Binary distributions will be used from upstream (no source build by default).
Q: Exactly what does this mean in this context? Binary distributions of ...
Are these the jar files inside the hortonworks/apache source (e.g.
./hive-0.7.1+/lib/javaewah-0.3.jar?
A: So most of the apache projects ship a binary distribution tarball which
includes all of the compile Java etc so we should not build from source - just
re-use these jars etc...

  Challenges:

hcatalog not packaged in bigtop trunk (need to check branches)
  JAVA_HOME and use of openjdk-6/7? JAVA_HOME detection - bigtop use a
specific package for this (bigtop-utils) which tries to guess - might be worth
re-using.
java-package as recommended approach to re-packaging Oracle java for Ubuntu
(generates Debian packaging from upstream binary distro).
Kerberos security - probably actually needs to be a charm configuration
option to secure a cluster.
Q: For Kerberos, do we have the necessary dependencies to get this done? If
so, I can do the charm work.j
Q: Re: Kerberos. We may need to really look into this as this will end up
affecting not only hadoop but, all of the other parts ( hive, pig, etc. ) as
well. This can really complicate the packaging/charming as well so, we may not
have time to get it all done in this cycle. Just my thoughts.
MultiArch native libraries in hdp-hadoop package - should not must.
Hive contains patches for hcatalog support - we need to work these in somehow
(maybe a overlay to the binary re-distribution).

  hcatalog:
External dependency on mysql-connector? and maybe mysql?
No binary distribution - only source so will need to be built locally to
produce release tarbal.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-arm-service-orchestration] Enabling juju for ARM

2012-01-26 Thread Robie Basak
Blueprint changed by Robie Basak:

Whiteboard changed:
  Question:
Is this using juju for direct deployment, or via Orchestra? -- Daviey

Via Orchestra. I think the main thing to test is juju because of it's
reliance on java with zookeeper. We don't need to discuss anything, just
test and fix bugs. -- Robbie

For juju to work on ARM, I am assuming that:

  1. ARM hardware will support IPMI for power management
  2. ARM hardware will support pxelinux emulation for boot
  3. cobbler's existing IPMI support will work with ARM IPMI

running juju via orchestra. juju currently fails to run on ARM in a local
environment, and I am working on this - but this is blocking me from clearing
the first five work items. Now that I have three pandas, I can test juju via
orchestra also. I expect either to clear the first four work items as soon as I
get juju working like this, or to find a series of ARM-specific bugs that I
will need to fix first.

[Bug 615545] Re: Instances launched in a VPC cannot access ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

2012-01-26 Thread Noah
I agree with Eric and cloudcontrol, for CNAMEs being the correct
solution.

In the meantime, there's a problem with using any debian package from
within ec2 instances - you can't contact the repository to install any
packages, so using a package to fix the problem presents something of a
bootstrapping problem.

That includes, by the way, anything that requires apt-mirror, since apt-
mirror is not part of the barebones Lucid AMI, and thus requires
installation, which requires connecting to the repo...

I have an alternative solution, which requires no package installation,
and which I will be using until this problem is fixed. Rather than
installing packages, I have chosen the simpler direct manipulation of
the sources.list file, like this:

sed -i -e 's/eu-west-1.ec2/uk/' /etc/apt/sources.list

Change 'uk' to be whatever your closest mirror is, and you'll be running
again.

Hoping not to have to go back to a broken system, sorry. I missed the
chance of more debugging whilst it was still broken. Hopefully the
existence of this bug will help others realise it might be worth trying
an uninstall when encountering this error at least.

Re: [Bug 779512] Re: nut-2.6.0-1ubuntu3 behavior regression

2012-01-26 Thread Martin Ewing
Hi Arnaud,

I seem to have fixed my NUT problem by upgrading my system to Ubuntu
11.10. (upsd 2.6.1)

I never resolved the issue on 11.04, but your udev rules file probably
would have done it, I would guess!

Thanks for all your help!

 Martin,

could you please check this bug report, and apply the udev related
procedure I've documented at the end of the thread:
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nut/+bug/578200

Once applied, stop nut, unplug/replug your UPS USB cord, and restart nut
(at least the driver), and report back the status.

  nut-2.6.0-1ubuntu3 behavior regression

Status in “nut” package in Ubuntu:
   Fix Committed

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nut

Prior to upgrading to Natty, I had the nut-2.4.3-1ubuntu5 package and
  it was working correctly.

After upgrading to Natty, I have the nut-2.6.0-1ubuntu3 package and it
is not working correctly. Here's my release info:

  •[x4linux:~] mmusgrove $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 11.04
  Release: 11.04

The symptom is that it can't initialize data from HID UPS and so the
  driver fails to start.

•[x4linux:~] mmusgrove $ sudo upsdrvctl start
Network UPS Tools - UPS driver controller 2.6.0
Network UPS Tools - Generic HID driver 0.35 (2.6.0)
  USB communication driver 0.31
  Using subdriver: CyberPower HID 0.3
  libusb_get_report: No error
Can't initialize data from HID UPS
Driver failed to start (exit status=1)

This appears to be the old behavior from 2.4.x prior to 2.4.3.

This was reported for Debian months ago:

 http://www.google.com/search?source=ighl=enq=nut+2.6.0-1+libusb_get_report%3A+No+error+Can%27t+initialize+data+from+HID+UPS

[Bug 903318] Re: juju ssh fails on local provider: pty-allocation-request-failed-on-channel-0

2012-01-26 Thread Clint Byrum
Agreed. I think this has to do with the fact that the LXC 'ubuntu'
template does not fail on errors, and there are operations which it does
that may fail, such as chrooting in and installing things.

One hypothesis I have is that the lxcguest package isn't installed
successfully because the networking details have changed.

Anyway, marking as affecting the lxc Ubuntu package.

[Bug 921924] Re: ubuntu installation crash

2012-01-26 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with the disk to which you are trying to
install Ubuntu. I'd recommend performing a back up of your existing
operating system and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections for your disks and using
software tools to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event
that is is not in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's
status back to New. Thanks and good luck!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 908335] Re: Kernel Hard Freezing Very Often

2012-01-26 Thread Danny Goodall
Jmadero. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I installed the 3.2.1
kernel image from the link you pointed me to. The machine booted to
console not the desktop as I guess my Nvidia drivers were not available
and therefore the x config is wrong.

I logged in to the shell but after about 2 minutes the system hung
again. Booting away from my docked station appeared to work with no
problems. Problem still there.

I had previously tried disabling the docking station's Ethernet port and
also booting with the wireless networking disabled (as a post above
suggested that Realtek network hardware might be a problem - although
I'm pretty sure my Dell e6400 has Intel WiFi hardware). Disabling both
still caused 11.10 Ubuntu with kernel 3.0.0-15 to hang.

As I said before the odd thing about this behaviour is that I can use
11.10 all day with zero problems running 3.0.0-15, but as soon as it is
docked I experience these hard lock-ups.

2012-01-26 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

After yesterday's upgrades including libindicator7, unity-greeter
crashes repeatedly until failsafe kicks in, and even then, after
selecting low graphics mode for the session, it crashes. I managed to
get X working again by downgrading unity-greeter back to 0.2.0-0ubuntu4
which I'm filing this report with. The crashing update was version
0.2.0-0ubuntu5.

I'm attaching the crash file.

It seems I'm not able to reproduce this on my other computer (also
running up-to-date Precise), so I'll look for differences in the setups.

You can try opening a terminal and running

[Bug 891045] Re: initscripts: upgrade fails in chroot

2012-01-26 Thread Peter Wright
A workaround which seems to work for LXC is to upgrade on the host (so
/dev/shm on the host is a symlink to /run/shm) and then on the guest
mkdir /run/shm. The upgrade process then proceeds without error:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

[Bug 920727] Re: Alert highlight/flash not functional for all windows

2012-01-26 Thread karl anliot
Sam, can you verify that the script alerts on non-lxde?

I'm asking because I just logged into gnome 2 desktop environment, tried your
script out, and didn't see any flashing.
Is it possible your script doesn't demonstrate the bug?

[Bug 582695] Re: problem with rsync to ecryptfs directory on ntfs-3g partition

2012-01-26 Thread Per Ångström
I should mention that I'm no longer getting any error messages, and the
rsync is more or less successful, but permissions, owner and group
settings are not transferred; I can see that by repeating the same
invocation with --itemize-changes:

.f...pog... etc/wpa_supplicant/functions.sh
.f...pog... etc/wpa_supplicant/ifupdown.sh
.d...pog... etc/xdg/
.f...pog... etc/xdg/Trolltech.conf

Can you also show us the mount options for your ntfs-3g partition?
/dev/sdb1 on /media/FotoPassport type fuseblk
(rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions)

Also, can you successfully rsync non-ecryptfs data to your ntfs-3g partition?
It works the same with or without ecryptfs.

Given that the remaining problems are of a different nature, I'm
prepared to write off this bug.

[Bug 921964] [NEW] gufw and Windows shares

2012-01-26 Thread Yaron Sheffer
Public bug reported:

gufw by default does not allow Nautilus to see Windows shares (seen on a
home network, Windows is a non-domain Win7 machine). This is widely
reported, see https://answers.launchpad.net/gui-ufw/+question/72444. I
think the default policy should allow it, but even with the current
policy, gufw should provide an easy way to install the relevant rules
(just adding the Samba Service does not work).

Importance: many people probably disable the firewall altogether because
Windows access is important to them, and the configuration is difficult.

Workaround:

- Download application profiles from
http://jhansonxi.blogspot.com/2010/10/ufw-application-profiles.html into
/etc/ufw/applications.d/

sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw allow samba
sudo ufw allow from any app Samba

[Bug 576648] Re: package nvidia-* failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-* kernel module failed to build (Unable to determine the target kernel version.)

2012-01-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you're using Ubuntu 12.04 and nvidia-173 then just do an update as
the bug is fixed.

If you're using an older version of Ubuntu then the workaround is to revert
back to the Linux kernel your version of Ubuntu came with.
Ubuntu 10.04 -- kernel 2.6.32
Ubuntu 11.04 -- kernel 2.6.38
Ubuntu 11.10 -- kernel 3.0.0

This means uninstalling any newer kernels you have installed. Because
the NVIDIA driver you have is too old to support the newer kernel you
must have manually installed.

Alternatively, if you can't live without the newer kernel you installed, then
another possible workaround is to uninstall the nvidia* driver packages, and
try to find and manually install a compatible driver from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

[Bug 921974] [NEW] userconfig kcm module no longer works on Kubuntu 12.04 development branch

2012-01-26 Thread Ryan Farmer
Public bug reported:

Starting the userconfig applet from the KDE Control Center brings up the
kdesudo prompt but entering a password causes the prompt to go away and
the applet never starts.

Apport is currently crashing itself whenever it reports a bug, so I'm
just going to have to report this without any useful information from
that.

Steps to reproduce:

Open System Settings

Click on User Management under System Administration.

Enter your sudo password.

Nothing happens.

Running kdesudo kcmshell4 userconfig causes the following output on the
terminal. (DrKonqi never comes up)

ryan@ryan-MS-7501:~$ kdesudo /usr/bin/kcmshell4 userconfig
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3

[Bug 796471] Re: No image is displayed when cheese starts with resolution set to 640x480 with isight webcam

2012-01-26 Thread Dario Bertini
I noticed this bug happening also on opensuse since 2011, and there is
this thread concerning fedora:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=273142

So, the problem is upstream for sure

Since it also affects skype, I think the problem may lie in libv4l
(don't know why it doesn't affect gstreamer-properties, google talk
plugin, vlc and other programs)

I'm currently using ubuntu precise 12.04... and the problem changed
slightly: now cheese gets the first frame from the webcam, and then gets
stuck and unresponsive for 1,2 minutes... after that it works fine
(without having to manually change the resolution)

Re: [Bug 901741] Re: perl-modules lucid-precise upgrade failure: debsums needs to restrict itself to Essential dependencies

2012-01-26 Thread Colin Watson
On Thu, Jan 26, 2012 at 01:49:54AM -, Thomas Bushnell, BSG wrote:
For this to work reliably in a cross-version lucid-precise upgrade,
however, won't you need to push a new libwmf0.2-7 package in lucid that
 fixes its prerm?

No, because dpkg will fall back to the new prerm (i.e. the one in the
package it's upgrading to). This is a very useful get-out clause. It
does require libwmf0.2-7 in precise to ship a no-op prerm rather than no
prerm at all, which is a little surprising, but otherwise it works.

[Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes display stutter/slow with fglrx

2012-01-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry, I don't see the fix lined up for any official ubuntu updates yet.
But it is definitely in compiz 0.9.7 which should go into Ubuntu 12.04.

You can try the fix out on Ubuntu 11.10 using ppa:vanvugt/compiz:
https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/compiz

P.S. It appears I only published the fix in August. So that's 5 months
ago. But still far too long, I agree.

[Bug 921976] [NEW] octave crashes when invoking eig function

2012-01-26 Thread Enrique Argones
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10

octave3.2 (3.2.4-11ubuntu2)
liblapack3gf (3.3.1-1)

The lapack library seems to be correctly installed, and it passes the
tests provided in package liblapack-test.

The expected octave output is a vector with the matrix eigenvalues
(eigenvectors are also returned if required). Instead, it reports a
symbol lookup error and exits.

Humble suggestion: it seems the octave version Ubuntu 11.10 provides was
not built with the right libraries... However, I can not say, I did not
build it from sources.

The bug is easily repeatible. I include the output of octave. I hope
this report is useful.
