[Bug 939863] Re: When users run ffmpeg whatever they are presented with a message that is somewhat erroneous completely childish

2012-02-24 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Well, that's half the truth. Libav 0.7, which is shipped in precise,
*does* ship a /usr/bin/ffmpeg binary that behaves more pretty much
exactly as the binary that was shipped in libav 0.6. This is done to not
break applications in ubuntu that rely on that behavior.

The /usr/bin/ffmpeg binary from FFmpeg, however, did change command line
options and positional behavior. For this reason, I don't think that
applying the patch from Comment #3 is a good idea.

2012-02-24 Thread Reinhard Tartler
This kernel appears to be GOOD:

root@faui49i:~ $ uptime

I'll continue running this kernel for rest of today, just to be sure,

Sorry. Didn't understand your question.
I used LiveCD. I marked the partition with my old / to format and mount as '/'
(so the old system was really completely wiped out byt the mkfs). In the same
dialog I marked my home partition to mount as /home and _do not_ format.

Thank you for your report. Do you have a possibility to test a newer

determine whether the problem is fixed by a newer version or not. After
that we could determine what to do next.

[Bug 503946] Re: Password box greyed out connecting to a hidden wirless network

2012-02-24 Thread Matt Darcy
I suggest closing this bug as it was logged in 2009 - the bug is now
almost 3 years old.

I've not seen this bug in ubuntu 10.04 so it's reasonable to assume the
issue has been resolved and I'm not going to go back to install 9.04 to
start trouble shooting this now.

I'd suggest closing the call as a dead issue.

[Bug 332707] Re: pbuilder-uml crashes

2012-02-24 Thread Maarten Bezemer
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running

[Bug 940145] [NEW] USB analog only devices sometimes show up with digital profile as well

2012-02-24 Thread David Henningsson
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, (I have yet to figure out when!)
USB headsets and mics which are analog only show up with a digital profile as

[Bug 213215] Re: Please include original cdrecord (cdrtools) package in Ubuntu

2012-02-24 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
Hi Jörg Schilling,

I'd be very happy to see your original cdrtools software in Debian, Ubuntu,
OpenSUSE and other free operating systems.
It seems this can be achieved very easily - you can simply add the thirty-nine
words text in sources of some libraries from cdrtools package:
You are permitted to link or otherwise combine this library with the program
mkisofs, which is licensed under the GNU General
Public License (GPL). If You do, you may distribute the combined work under the
terms of the GPL.

It's very easy to do and cost nothing :)

Jörg, please, give the permission as the relevant copyright holder on
the CDDL's libraries for combination with mkisofs and distribution of
the binary and source under the terms of GPL, without any additional
restrictions.

Please, add this text even if you are 100% sure, that you don't *need* to grant
the permission - all users of your original cdrtools software will be very
happy if you add this text, because then your package will be included into
OpenSUSE, Ubuntu and other Linux-based free OS, according to
https://features.opensuse.org/311186 and
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2011-02/msg00089.html

Jörg, please don't waste your time and don't argue with them even if they are
not telling the truth - I've read yours answer
(http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2011-02/msg00093.html ) and I agree
with you, but you could show your generosity and simply give the permission as
the relevant copyright holder on the CDDL's libraries.
Thank you very much for all your work and efforts.

I'm pasting some text from email above:
[..]
After speaking to Jörg we began our review of the complete source of
cdrtools, and soon verified that GPL compliance on mkisofs was broken.
We told Jörg that as far as we could see he was the only copyright
holder on the CDDL'd libraries, which he confirmed. In that case, I
pointed out, he could give all the permission necessary to solve the
problem, without any license changes: he simply needed to give
permission as the relevant copyright holder on the CDDL's libraries
for combination with mkisofs and distribution of the binary and source
under the terms of GPL, without any additional restrictions. We
drafted for him the thirty-nine words needed: You are permitted to
link or otherwise combine this library with the program mkisofs, which
is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). If You do,
you may distribute the combined work under the terms of the GPL.
[...]
Though Jörg continued to argue that he didn't *need* to grant the
permission, he never explained why, in the face of opposing legal
analysis on behalf of the copyright holders of mkisofs he didn't
*want* to grant a harmless permission that would allow his work to be
included in Canonical's Ubuntu distributions. After weeks of
discussion and many hours of my time and the time of my associate
Aaron Williamson, Mark Shuttleworth decided there was no point in
further fruitless negotiation and I agreed.

[Bug 940150] [NEW] Xubuntu Oneiric does not support more than 8 CPU Cores

2012-02-24 Thread David Solbach
Public bug reported:

In the 32bit version of Ubuntu's linux-server package (or the kernel
packages it depends upon) NR_CPUS is limited to 8 CPUs and BIGSMP is
disabled.

Nowadays this restriction to 8 CPU cores is imho a bit outdated. We had
to compile the kernel and reconfigure BIGSMP and NR_CPUS to make it work
with 16 Cores.

[Bug 868423] Re: Launcher - Workspace switcher should not be in the Launcher by default

2012-02-24 Thread Martin Pitt
I'm sorry, but I just have to put a rant here. Can you pretty please
stop damaging multiple workspaces? Why do you hate them so much?

 * You already rendered the ws switcher in the Launcher pretty much
useless. It now takes two seconds to reveal the launcher, then you need
to click on the ws switcher, then move your mouse all the way to the
other end of the screen and then double(!) click on the ws you want.
This is ridiculous, and nobody who uses work spaces will actually endure
this more than once.

 * Recently you broke the standard key combination for changing WS to
Super+Shift+Cursor, which nobody knows and everyone is now complaining
that you broke it. This is pointless and taking away the method to
switch WS which is efficient and sensible.

 * Now you propose to completely take away the WS switcher from the
Launcher entirely, which means that you effectively stop new users from
learning that they exist, and force them to cram everything to one
desktop again.

So from these it's clear that you work hard on effecively removing
multiple workspaces. Instead of pretending that they still exist, can
you please revert the standard key combination to Ctrl+Alt+Cursor,
revert the launcher icon to a sane behaviour (just click on the WS that
you want in the launcher, just as every other desktop does it), and
instead we just provide an option in the control center use multiple
workspaces which is off by default?

[Bug 940152] [NEW] Using Lenses causes system freeze after upgrading to 12.04 from 11.10

2012-02-24 Thread Mark East
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my 11.10 machine to 12.04 a couple of days ago and have
noticed that when ever I try and uses any of the lenses for searches it
appears to cause the system to freeze shortly after. After running a top
I noticed that at the time of the freeze these are loads of gst-plugin-
scan processes spawned. The machine indicates it is about to become
unresponsive as the mouse becomed juddery just before it stops reposning
to input. I also notice the disk indicator light becomign highly active
which suggests it is hammering the swap space.

See the attached screenshot to see a top output at the time of the
freeze. I can replicate the isseu every time. I'm now going to leave it
in this state to see if the kernel OOM process will kick in and bring
the machine back to life.

Please elt me know if you require any more debug info or want me to try
anything.

2012-02-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package acm - 5.0-28ubuntu1

---
acm (5.0-28ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian testing (LP: #929012). Remaining changes:
- Kept the changed description in debian/control to be less confusing.
- Added call to fclose to close file pointer
- Test-rebuild FTFBS: type clash of float_t which is defined
by system. In acm, float_t is locally defined as float, I chose
to rename the type to float_type; upstream authors might possibly
want make use of system definition. Files affected:
src/interpolate.*, src/inventory.c
- Add .desktop file from Phil Bull
- Include converted icon suggested by Phill Bul as XPM

acm (5.0-28) unstable; urgency=low

  * Merging revised description from 5.0-27ubuntu2 (closes: 588894).
Thanks, Sam L.
  * Fix synposis.
  * Bump standards-version to 3.9.2.
  * Update debian/rules for recommended build targets and replace dh_clean
-k with dh_prep.
