[Bug 989355] Re: Unable to create Node: timed out

2012-05-18 Thread Sebastian Malcolm
To find some way to get MAAS to wait longer, I I initially looked in
/usr/share/pyshared/cobbler/modules/sync_post_restart_services.py and
found code that looks like it uses subprocess_sp() from
/usr/share/pyshared/cobbler/utils.py to run service dnsmasq restart.
Perhaps the code for restarting services could print out a progress bar
or message like will wait PSERV_TIMEOUT seconds for service to
restart.

I found PSERV_TIMEOUT in /usr/share/maas/maas/settings.py then added the
2 lines below in /etc/maas/maas_local_settings.py that should override
the 7.0 seconds default value:

# Time-out for socket operations against the Provisioning API.
PSERV_TIMEOUT = 60.0  # seconds.

== 5 step mini-HOWTO for fixing an incomplete Add Node operation ==
(1) Remove node added to Cobbler as a System, but not visible in MAAS Web UI
# cobbler system remove --name=node-e59f0a74-a0a5-11e1-86c0-00187184baf2

(2) Removed any existing DHCP leases for this node that didn't finish getting
added to MAAS
[The node I was getting timed out error on was booted into an existing Ubuntu
install and getting a DHCP lease, so i unplugged it's network cable before
attempting to re-add it to MAAS]
# service dnsmasq stop
# vi /var/lib/misc/dnsmasq.leases
# service dnsmasq start

(3) Check node removed from cobbler
[The two node- entries below are two offline machines I had successfully
added before PXE booting them]
# cobbler system list
   default
   node-9c4d6890-9fe5-11e1-8148-00187184baf2
   node-dd577d68-a098-11e1-86c0-00187184baf2

(4) Manually restart dnsmasq cobbler
# service dnsmasq restart
# service cobbler restart

(5) Test MAAS / Retry adding the MAC for the node
I had two nodes added (in Offline/Commissioning state), so to check things were
working I powered one on (manually) and it successfully PXE booted from the
MAAS server then powered itself off and entered the Queued/Ready state. I
retried again to add the problematic node... and this time it worked!

One or more of these things I did may have fixed the Add Node timed out
problem:
(a) increase PSERV_TIMEOUT in /etc/maas/maas_local_settings.py,; or
(b) unplug network cable of this machine that was already powered on running
Ubuntu desktop getting DHCP lease from dnsmasq; or
(c) also removing the existing lease line for that machine from
/var/lib/misc/dnsmasq.leases file (after stopping dnsmasq).

TODO: Test if this Add Node timed out problem only occurs when
attempting to add a machine that has obtained a DHCP lease from dnsmasq
(because it powered online with an existing OS installed). Could also
try enlisting with the boot menu option from Ubuntu Server 12.04 from
CDROM/USB instead of manually adding the MAC address.

[Bug 1000710] Re: Attaching volume during instance boot doesn't work

2012-05-18 Thread Nick Moffitt
Our current hypothesis for how this situation happened in the first
place is that because nova-api returns success early, it's possible to
run the attach before the volume has actually been successfully created.

It looks like the attach needs to block internally to wait for the
volume creation to succeed before it can proceed with action.

Yes, it looks very much like the DNS system is broken here, but when I

Still, adding some dns-nameservers lines to /etc/network/interfaces is

[Bug 913809] Re: smbd crashed with SIGABRT in rep_strlcpy()

2012-05-18 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

It would be great if one or more of the reporters of this bug could try
to grab a backtrace from smbd when it hits this issue.

Details on how todo this can be found here:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace

Marking this bug as 'Incomplete' pending further information - please
set back to 'New' once a backtrace has been captured and attached to
this bug report.

I'm also marking this as importance 'High' due to the number of
duplicates.

Thanks

[Blueprint servercloud-q-cloud-archive] Ubuntu Cloud Archive

2012-05-18 Thread Chuck Short
Blueprint changed by Chuck Short:

Whiteboard set to:
UDS Discussion points:

Welcome to Ubuntu Developer Summit!
#uds-p #track #topic
'The Cloud Archive'
- NOT PPA's
 - Personal and not of release quality with 'unknown' controls.
- NOT backports
 - Only single version can be supported at a time

Policy:
 -
http://undacuvabrutha.wordpress.com/2012/04/19/openstack-in-ubuntu-server-12-04-lts/
QA
 - Upgrade testing for possible upgrade paths.

Cloud Archive will support Openstack and all of its dependencies.
 - Duplicate set of pockets for each openstack release
 - Release Mangement? Archive Freezes? can this be supported using the
existing process/mechanism?
Release Approach
- 2 week offset from main ubuntu release cycle
- same processes around archive pocket freezes as main ubuntu release.
Bugs?
- Support targetting to cloud archive overlay packages.
PPA - developer options for using openstack on current stable release
Mirror/Archive Location
- Not mirrored.
Actions:
Work with OpenStack upstream to produce consolidated PPA strategy
Sync with CI strategy for Openstack QA - specifically upgrade testing
Create 'cloud-archive' project and infrastructure to support.
Document release process and schedule
Feature for add-apt-repository to enable cloud archive with nice addressing
scheme.

User Stories:

Al wants to use multi-host ARM servers however since he still wants run
to precise he needs to run Folsom since it has proper ARM support for
running instances. By deploying Folsom from the cloud archive he can use
the latest cutting features of Folsom while still using precise.

[Bug 596064] Re: nmbd fails to start on boot - problem with upstart

2012-05-18 Thread Vasya Pupkin
After another reboot, smbd started, nmbd didn't, but this time there was
a message in log:

May 18 18:27:37 shadow-server init: nmbd pre-start process (882)
terminated with status 1

After one more reboot both smbd and nmbd startd. Can someone finally fix
this? Can this god damn init be more strict on starting services? And at
least provide a good reason why some service did not start, like it is
done in Windows for 15 years now?!

[Bug 496922] Re: Ubuntu snmpd package doesn't include all net-snmpd modules

2012-05-18 Thread Michael Heldebrant
Script essentially is giving me a counter to watch the rate of commits
on a subversion repository:

mheldebr@server:~$ /svn-hotcopy/svnyoungest
10386

I tried both exec (works on RHEL5 configured like this) and extend which
both fail:

Snippet of snmpd.conf file with exec style:
exec 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.3 svncommits /bin/sh /svn-hotcopy/svnyoungest

mheldebr@server:~$ snmpwalk -v 2c -c REDACTED localhost 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.3
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.3 = No Such Object available on this agent at
this OID

And configured as extend:
extend 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.3 svncommits /svn-hotcopy/svnyoungest

mheldebr@server:~$ snmpwalk -v 2c -c REDACTED localhost 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.3
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.3 = No Such Object available on this agent at

[Bug 993259] Re: ypbind does not start on boot

2012-05-18 Thread John Sopko
This may help if you have this issue with ypbind trying to start and the
network not up yet:

Use IP addreses in /etc/yp.conf

for example:

domain your_nis_domain server 10.10.123.123

If the network is not up, ypbind starts and cannot reslove the hostname in
yp.conf and dies.
If you supply an IP address it will start and bind when the network is up.

[Bug 999725] Re: broken start-up dependencies for ntp

2012-05-18 Thread Paul Crawford
I think this bug should concentrate on the key issue: that ntp (and
maybe others?) is being brought up on the wrong event, that is it comes
up with the interface, and not with the chosen type of name server.

In our case NIS provides user and name server resolution, and ntp comes
up before it with 12.04

I don't know how LDAP is handled, but from the above comments it would
appear be have the same problem, and so ntp is not currently able to
resolve machines given only by NIS (or LDAP) name if they are not in the
DNS (which I guess might be common with a large private network behind
NAT).

(like google, or even the other university machines as
they are not part of our NIS set-up).

For what it's worth, I see that at least some NIS servers
do support behind-the-scenes DNS lookups within the hosts
map; see for example the -n option to FreeBSD's ypserv
command:
  http://www.gsp.com/cgi-bin/man.cgi?section=8topic=ypserv#10

So presumably some such server is in use at your site. (As
far as I can tell, the NIS servers for Linux don't support
that function, so I assume your NIS server there is not
running Ubuntu...)

However, the advice I see on the web generally agrees that
this function is obsolete (since the nsswitch.conf file now
lets clients configure the NIS v.s. DNS issue directly), so
I wonder if your NIS guy actually intended for DNS
resolution to be left unconfigured on your Precise
system...?

[Bug 999725] Re: broken start-up dependencies for ntp

2012-05-18 Thread Paul Crawford
Yes, you are right in that our NIS servers are solaris boxes, and they
do support behind-the-scenes DNS lookups as it turns out. It is also
true that NIS is depreciated, though a lot of older installations like
ours still use it, and for most machines DNS is available and will
probably fix our specific issue.

But...that is still not an excuse for daemons (like ntp) that might
depend on the directory service (NIS, LDAP, ActiveDirectory, etc) being
started without a sensibly configured sequence/dependency!

More specifically, the ntp package has not been converted
to Upstart yet, so it just comes up as part of the
rc-sysvinit scripts. That is, ntpd's startup itself isn't
tied to any specific event(s) at all (though as Steve's
comment hinted at, the execution of the rc-sysvinit scripts
as a group is triggered by the filesystem and
static-network-up condition).

I'm not sure off hand how the decision is made whether to
convert a package such as ntp to Upstart... but I see a
couple other bugs open on the topic: LP #604717 , LP #913379

In our case NIS provides user and name server resolution,
and ntp comes up before it with 12.04

(As far as I can tell, the NIS and ntp start conditions are
the same in Lucid and Precise, so I wonder if the reason
you don't see this problem on your Lucid machine is that
DNS is configured there.)

I don't know how LDAP is handled, but from the above
comments it would appear be have the same problem, and so
ntp is not currently able to resolve machines given only
by NIS (or LDAP) name if they are not in the DNS (which I
guess might be common with a large private network behind
 NAT).

One thing to note is that ntp does spawn a separate process
that continues to retry looking up host names until it
finds an answer, so normally it will recover gracefully if
the lookup fails when ntp first starts up but start to work
later on.

I'm not sure of the details of how that interacts with
NIS-based host resolution, but I suspect this resolver
process doesn't deal with the NIS-is-not-ready-yet
situation the same way it does for DNS.

Anyway, I suspect that it's pretty rare for a site to have
no DNS at all, and that's probably why this issue hasn't
shown up for other people.

(Also, I don't know if there's an automated way for the
system to detect that ntp needs NIS to be up, so probably
such a dependency wouldn't be found in a default
installation. But if ntp were converted to Upstart, it
would be much easier for the system administrator to add
that dependency manually)

[Bug 974584] Re: Semaphores cannot be created in lxc container

2012-05-18 Thread Serge Hallyn
This has taken me longer than it should have because I made some bad
initial assumptions.

The appearance of a /dev/shm directory was a bit of a false flag. That
was happening because the chroot case higher in initscripts.postinst was
failing to create the /dev/shm symbolic link in the first place. It's
source directory (/run/shm) needed to first be created, and then the
arguments to compat_link() were reversed. I assumed they were correct
because they were the same for the /var/lock symlink which is correctly
created - but in fact the /var/lock symlink exists before that block of
code.

Here is a debdiff which appears to fix the /dev/shm symlink creation in
a container for me.

[Bug 974584] Re: Semaphores cannot be created in lxc container

2012-05-18 Thread Steve Langasek
I can confirm Serge's analysis here. I'm surprised that this hasn't
bitten us more severely before now, given that I see all my compat
symlinks are wrong in my (iteratively upgraded) precise chroots here;
apparently things really don't care so much about the compat these days.

We should definitely fix this for .1.

[Bug 996839] Re: conflict between inetutils-ping and iputils-ping during bootstrapping phase

2012-05-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package lxc - 0.8.0~rc1-4ubuntu8

---
lxc (0.8.0~rc1-4ubuntu8) quantal; urgency=low

  * Update lxc-ubuntu:
- Update list of extra packages for debootstrap to only include vim
and ssh. The others were only relevant when we were still using the
  minbase variant. (LP: #996839)
- Drop any hardcoded Ubuntu version check and replace by feature
  checks instead.
- Format lxc-ubuntu to consistently use 4-spaces indent instead of
  mixed spaces/tabs.
- Update default /etc/network/interfaces to include the header.
- Update default /etc/hosts to match that of a regular Ubuntu system.
- Drop support for end-of-life releases (gutsy on sparc).
- Make sure /etc/resolv.conf is valid before running any apt command.
- Update template help message for release and arch parameters.
- Switch default Ubuntu version from lucid to precise.
  * Update lxc-start-ephemeral:
- Remove lxc-ip and replace it by a call to ip netns until we have
an extended lxc-attach we can use for that.
- Fix a race in lxc-start-ephemeral where the container isn't yet
running when trying to get its IPs.
- Update a few calls so that lxc-start-ephemeral can be called as a
user (ensure consistent usage of sudo across the script).
  * Add new lxc-default-with-nesting apparmor profile, allowing nested
containers.

[Bug 990898] Re: Wifi: Can't get connected when running on Battery

2012-05-18 Thread Etienne V.
I found that it can be linked to the power management of the wireless card.
I read thist article
http://www.hitxp.com/articles/software/ubuntu-fix-slow-wireless-internet-connection-speed-upgrading-11-04-natty-narwhal/
 and did what is recommended.
Now the Power Management is off for wlan0 and it's working better. I can get
the wireless connection when I am running with my battery.
Is it normal?

I can also confirm that is fixed in 3.4.2; it's not actually fixed in
Quantal yet as Nautilus 3.5.2 (which also contains the fix) isn't due

[Bug 853244] Re: Acer Aspire 5742Z brightness keys not working

2012-05-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Alkis Georgopoulos, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. It
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions verbatim at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel . If you have done so,
please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can
add a bugwatch that will inform us about the status. Thanks in advance.

Marking Triaged as mainline tested.

** Description changed:

  In 2.6.32 (Lucid) there's an /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0
interface for Aspire 5742Z, and brightness hotkeys do modify the values
of the files in that dir, but the actual laptop brightness isn't
  changed.

  In 3.0.0-9 (Oneiric beta 1) there's no /sys/devices/virtual/backlight
  interface at all.

If I boot with acpi=off, the brightness keys correctly modify
brightness, but of course I lose all other ACPI functionality.

I tried some of the other acpi-related kernel parameters
(acpi_backlight=vendor etc) mentioned in
- * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight
- * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI
- * www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt
- * http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/acpi/debug.php
+  * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight
+  * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI
+  * www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt
+  * http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/acpi/debug.php
to no avail, brightness only works with acpi=off or acpi=ht.

I tried the fwts tool for ACPI testing, and it produced some errors, I'm
attaching the output.
I also tried playing with acpiexec, but calling the _BCM method didn't change
the brightness either.

`ubuntu-bug linux` doesn't work from the oneiric beta live CD, I'll
manually attach lspci etc as well.

[Bug 1000567] Re: 8086:4224 Panic after enabling rtap_iface in ipw2200 driver (ipw_handle_promiscuous_tx / skb_put)

2012-05-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Marking Triaged as mainline tested.

** Description changed:

  1) Enable the rtap_iface of the ipw2200 driver by echoing 1 in
  /sys/module/ipw2200/drivers/pci:ipw2200/*/rtap_iface

  2) ifconfig rtap0 up

  3) Use the eth1 wireless interface (eg. send some data, connect to a
network) or even just run ifconfig many times

  4) A kernel panic occurs.

I'm attaching two screenshots of the panic, took one on 3.0.0-16-generic
  and one on 3.0.0-16-generic-tuxonice.

  uname -a is:
  Linux VittGamLaptop2 3.0.0-16-generic-tuxonice #29~ppa1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 9
10:57:58 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

The computer is an IBM Thinkpad X41.

The ipw2200 module I use is the stock module that comes with the Ubuntu
  kernel.

[Bug 973014] Re: gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, (libgstvideoparsersbad.so), causes a failure to decode many common video files encoded as AVC 1 Baseline - L2.1, Baseline - L1.1 others

2012-05-18 Thread eden6000
Thanks Doug...I really don't understand why the folks at Canonical don't
give to bug like this one the right importance...another one is bug
#780117, which is related to brasero...it's such a shame, you say your
target is precision, come on, fix these BIG bugs...moreover the fixes
are already there, you only have to make them available to everybody!

[Bug 1000098] Re: [HP EliteBook 8440p, IDT 92HD75B3X5, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2012-05-18 Thread mmicotti
it seems to be fixed!

The last values for the modprobe.d options I tried did the trick, but only
after shutdown (simply rebooting do not work, i don't know why).
I followed the instruction of the last post of this thread:
http://www.linux-archive.org/gentoo-user/566518-ff-chromium-trapped-deafness-how-configure-alsa-correctly.html
  (linked by this other one:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/slackware-13-37-audio-setup-seems-fine-no-sound-922521/),
and I set the last line of alsa-base.conf as follows:

options snd-intel-hda model=auto,auto enable_msi=1,0 index=0,1
id=Intel,NVidia

Now everything is working fine.. (I hope).

[Bug 987788] Re: Missing links

2012-05-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Seb, I couldn't directly merge the proposal as it's filed against a
branch I don't have commit rights to (ubuntu-docs isn't in the ubuntu-
desktop set).

Also, he merge proposal contained two parts: tweaks to the guest session
page and restoring the link to Language Support help. The Language
Support link can be verified by looking for the yellow note at the
bottom of the page when opening

yelp help:ubuntu-help/session-language
yelp help:ubuntu-help/session-formats

I didn't think the guest session changes were worth breaking
translations for, and I requested that a separate merge proposal/bug be
used for that proposal.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Can I use unity 2D, gnome-shell,

I have gnome failsafe which I tried using but it didn't correct the flash

  WORKAROUNDS:

  1.

 http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html#117645

  2. Click on the flash window. Now use the keyboard to tab through the
  settings dialog. Space to select.

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
Adobe flash player is configured on my system to ask before a website
sets a flash cookie, so if a video (eg on youtube) is played, a dialogue
box will pop up asking me whether or not to allow the website to store a
cookie on my machine. However, nothing happens when I click on either
'allow' or 'deny', so the box stays put and I can't view or control the
 video playing beneath it.
On this machine I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10; in 11.04 there was a
program for adjusting the flash player settings in the System Settings
control panel, but that program is no longer there and not accessible via
the dash, so there is no obvious way to just configure flash to allow all
cookies and avoid the dialogue box.

  Workaround: using Unity 2D instead

PSERV_TIMEOUT = 60.0  # seconds.

[Bug 1000758] Re: konica minolta network printer doesn't print in 12.04

2012-05-18 Thread To Do
** Description changed:

  I have a Konica-Minolta bizhub C203 printer which worked fine until I
  upgraded to 12.04.

Now the file is sent to the printer and it hangs needing a printer
restart. I tried using different protocols (lpd, ipp, jetdirect) with no
  luck.

The printer is seen but there's an error saying toner empty (which is
  not true).

Would like to send logs but don't know where they are.
