[Bug 1015041] Re: Conflict between NTP and NTPDATE

2012-07-13 Thread JoLa
Not really the reason. After user log out and log in, which I do rarely,
the loop comes back.

[Bug 1015041] Re: Conflict between NTP and NTPDATE

2012-07-13 Thread JoLa
May be: Installing Xubuntu I used the home-partition of ubuntu. Before I
deleted most of the files and directories meaning that they are relevant
for the unity desktop.

Now I will do it again and leave only those applications, which have
nothing to do with the system. E.g. Firefox and Thunderbird profiles.

[Bug 1002997] Re: Tomcat7 package should have jdbc-pool module

2012-07-13 Thread James Page
This is a hangover from bug 283852; tomcat-dbcp.jar was not shipped as
it was 'just' a repackage of commons-dbcp.

However it looks like this has changed since tomcat7 so maybe we should
revisit. This module does get built - we just don't ship it in the
packages.

2012-07-13 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

From the installer log file it looks like you have a configuration issue
in your nova.conf file:

nova.openstack.common.cfg.ConfigFileParseError: Failed to parse
/etc/nova/nova.conf: at /etc/nova/nova.conf:2, Section must be started
before assignment: None

I would recommend that you resolve that issue and then run:

   sudo apt-get -f install

I'm marking this bug as 'Invalid' as its caused by your local
configuration being broken so is not a bug.

Thanks

2012-07-13 Thread James Page
The pre-start checks include a re-load of the apparmor profile:

Error del analizador AppArmor para /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld in
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld en la l?nea 9: No se pudo abrir
abstractions/mysql

Please can you check that /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/mysql is
installed and if it is not then try re-installing apparmor:

  sudo apt-get install --reinstall -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss
apparmor

Hopefully this will resolve your issue.

I don't think this is actually a bug but a problem with your local
install - marking 'Invalid'.

Please can you try running:

sudo DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer apt-get install -f

And attach the output to this bug report; hopefully this will tell us

[Bug 1024300] Re: Empty strings in mysql.user disables new users

2012-07-13 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

I think that this is actually the intended behavior; some notes about a
'default' install:

1) mysql by default only binds to 127.0.0.1
2) the 'empty' accounts are anonymous accounts which are only usable from
localhost or the server itself

You can make the 'testuser' account in your example work by creating a
user with:

CREATE USER 'testuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'testpw';
GRANT SELECT ON testdb.* TO 'testuser'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

OR you can bind mysql to 0.0.0.0 and your account above will start to
work with:

   mysql --user=testuser --password=testpw -h server hostname

The host wildcard that is created when no origin is specified will match
'localhost'.

Marking 'Invalid' as this is the intended behaviour and not a bug.

[Bug 1022612] Re: private instance IPs can only reach public IPs in other regions, not the same region

2012-07-13 Thread James Page
This may be pertinent:

http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-compute/admin/content
/associating-public-ip.html

Note that you cannot SSH to an instance with a public IP from within
the same server as the routing configuration won't allow it.

This would explain the reason why 'a1' can't see its own public address;
is it possible that a1/a2 are on the same server?

Thanks. With no pressing need for an update, I'm not sure that this will
meet SRU criteria. The best route to have the hints file updated is to
get it fixed upstream (if it isn't already) and it then will be picked
up by Debian and, into the Ubuntu development release ready for the
subsequent stable release.

[Bug 1020834] Re: instance-state: unknown

2012-07-13 Thread James Page
Hi Rene

Looking at some of the MAAS deployment I use the 'instance-state:
unknown' status is normal so is a bit of a red herring in this case.

It looks like the juju zookeeper integration can't get data from
zookeeper; so this is probably a juju issue rather than maas.

Please could you SSH to the bootstrap node and dig around in
/var/log/zookeeper - hopefully you might find some more information from
the other end of the connection that might help diagnose this issue.

Please attach any information to this bug report.

[Bug 836849] Re: Samba starts before static IPs set in network manager, even when only using 'interfaces' and not 'bind interfaces only'

2012-07-13 Thread Robie Basak
The last time I looked at this, I missed that Clint had already marked
this Invalid.

Camden, you say:
I do not have IFACE=eth0 in the start on' clause of /etc/init/smb.conf

Note that this is required. If you choose to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf
manually to add an interfaces entry, you MUST also adjust
/etc/init/smb.conf if you're using Network Manager.

As Clint said, I don't see a generic way of avoiding this requirement,
but also see it as acceptable that you understand how to edit
configuration files manually if you choose to edit configuration files
manually.

So, realistically, this isn't going to change, unless someone else wants
to propose a path forward in technical terms. It's either a Wishlist, or
Won't Fix, or both. I think that keeping this bug open is misleading, so
I'm marking it as Won't Fix.

[Bug 1020436] Re: Cannot read superblock after FC multipath failover

2012-07-13 Thread Peter Petrakis
Thanks for all the feedback, there's quite a bit of information here to sort
through.
In the meanwhile, it would be an interesting data point to see how well this
array
functions under multipath 0.4.9, which is what Precise, the new LTS uses.

This can be accomplished by using apt pinning.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/103320/install-packages-from-newer-
release-without-building-apt-pinning/103338#103338

In your case:

$ sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/precise.list  EOF
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main restricted

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted
EOF

$ sudo tee /etc/apt/preferences  EOF
Package: multipath-tools*
Pin: release n=precise
Pin-Priority: 990

Package: *
Pin: release n=lucid
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin: release o=Ubuntu
Pin-Priority: -10
EOF

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

Should update multipath-tools and boot to 0.4.9, if not then
$ sudo apt-get install -t precise multipath-tools multipath-tools-boot

This should unjam you while we triage the data and will provide
a valuable data point to aid in backporting if necessary.

Note that the config syntax has changed slightly.

https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/device-mapper-
multipathing.html#multipath-new-and-changed-features

It's ok to leave both directives in the file multpath simply globs keywords and
uses
the ones that fit. Remember to update your initrd after changing the config
file.

I assume you have multiple SAN clients, please keep one at 0.4.8 so we can
continue
to debug this. Thanks.

[Bug 1014864] [NEW] [MIR] walinuxagent

2012-07-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Ben Howard (utlemming):

[Background information]: Microsoft Windows Azure is a cloud Paas
(Infrastructure as a Service) that allows offers a utility compute
experience, similiar to Amazon's EC2. Ubuntu Cloud Images are officially
supported by Canonical and Microsoft as a guest on Windows Azure.

[Availability]: This is a new package for cloud enablement. As such it
is not currently available in Universe. In order for a package to be
included on the official cloud images, it must be in Main, as Universe
is disallowed by policy. Further, this package needs to be included on
the Ubuntu Server CD Image.

[Rationale]: This package is required in order to run Ubuntu on Windows
Azure Cloud IaaS. With out this package, it is impossiable to boot
Ubuntu on Windows Azure. The package contains an agent which
communicates with the Windows Azure Cloud fabric, reports the start up
status, provisions the default user, adds security credentials, changes
the host name, etc.

[Security]: Windows Azure was just released on 07 June 2012 and the
general availability of this source code is new. As a result, there is
no security history. However, this package does not setup an servers or
listen for network connections. It is an agent that handles the
bootstrapping of a machine, including adding users and setting up in-
instance network connections. Any security issues with this package
should be tangential to the security of Windows Azure PaaS.

/usr/sbin/waagent: this is the agent which handles the initial provisioning.
The agent is Linux agonostic, and runs on RHEL, Fedora, openSUSE, SUSE,
Debian and Ubuntu. The agent handles many of the package maintaner
functions
  like installing the init script.

[Quality assurance]: No obvious issues with the MIR requirements

[UI standard]: Not applicable

[Dependencies]: All dependencies are already in main.

[Standards compliance]: No issues identified

[Maintenance]: The package is relatively simple. In terms of maintance,
the upstream is Microsoft Corp, and the source is freely open on GitHub.
Microsoft and Canonical have an official relationship/partnership
regarding the running of Ubuntu on Windows Azure, and as such, Canonical
and/or Microsoft will maintain this code base as part of the official
Ubuntu Cloud Images.

This package will be jointly maintained by Ubuntu Engineering and
Canonical Professional Engineering Services.

[Source Location]: The source is checked into:

[Bug 1014864] Re: [MIR] walinuxagent

2012-07-13 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Security review:

After performing a shallow, high-level code audit:
- There is one python script and no dbus services, setuid capabilities, fscaps
or cron jobs. But there are security relevant items to note:
- Ubuntu patches wagent to add an upstart job via '--setup' that runs the agent
as a daemon as root. '--setup' is run during postinst
- When creating an account (happens during specific state changes), it creates
/etc/sudoers.d/waagent. If the the uid of the user is UID_MIN from
/etc/login.defs, it adds NOPASSWD to the entry in /etc/sudoers.d/waagent. This
could be a problem if someone with a UID of 999 creates an account but in all
other ways is a non-system user. I'm not sure if it makes sense to have a
system user added, so maybe this NOPASSWD bit can be patched out?
- /etc/sudoers.d/waagent is unconditionally deleted on account removal, meaning
if multiple accounts were added via waagent, any other accounts likely are
broken
- Run() is implemented as 'os.system()' with no input filtering. This is not
good because shell injection attacks can be performed if the input to
os.system() is user controllable. Run() should be converted to use
subprocess.Popen(). Based on ovfobj = OvfEnv().Parse(ovfxml) from the Agent
class, this means anything on the DVD could do bad stuff-- though we must
expect the DVD to be trusted. Run() is also used extensively via the
HostingEnvironmentConfig. I don't consider this a security issue in and of
itself (the agent necessarily trusts the server and DVD), but it would be good
to use subprocess.Popen() as a hardening measure.
- Will start up a server LoadBalancerProbeServer() that runs a simple
SocketServer.TCPServer(). This server just returns the date and time, and load
balances its log. Adding an iptables rule to only allow access to this port
from the fabric
controller may be a useful hardening measure.
- DoDhcpWork() unconditionally opens port 68/udp (dhcp client) on the firewall
in the INPUT chain, then makes a dhcp request
- In general, waagent uses a poll architecture
(http://www.faqs.org/patents/imgfull/20120102186_04), where the agent
periodically asked the Endpoint for things to do. This is fine so long as the
server can be trusted. It might be worthwhile
to add an egress rule so the agent can only talk to the fabric controller on th
e defined port for the fabric controller.

In all, while the code is running as root, there is only one listening
service and it is extremely simple. As mentioned, adding ingress
filtering for this service is recommended, but not a condition of this
MIR. waagent touches large parts of the system, but that is what it is
designed to do. While I do have some reservations based on my findings
and the newness of the code, it sounds like this will be well maintained
in Ubuntu since several people from Canonical have stepped up to
maintain it. ACK from the security team.

When sshd_config contains a comment of more than 1023 chars, it treats char
1024+ as valid configuration. That usually breaks the config, or (in case there
accidentally is valid sshd_config syntax) is unwanted.

To verify the bug, apply appended patch to sshd_config (that prepends a
long comment) and try to start ssh. You will see this:

  $ sudo /usr/local/sbin/sshd
/usr/local/etc/sshd_config: line 2: Bad configuration option:
ThisIsTheEndOfALongComment
/usr/local/etc/sshd_config: terminating, 1 bad configuration options

Note that it complains about line 2 though the offending comment is in
line 1.

It is worth mentioning that active configuration lines longer than 1023
chars work fine. (I discovered this bug when i commented out a long
Match Address list)

[Bug 1016695] Re: add console=tty1 to cloud-image kernel boot parameters

2012-07-13 Thread Ben Howard
Re comment #9

Scott,

I have no intention of changing anything until a through test is done
for the _exact_ concerns that your raising.

The change does seem reasonable, but I just want to avoid making arbitrary
changes that we do not completely understand.
My comment about the change being innocent enough is misleading, since it
implies that that I think there would be no reprocussions.

I'm also concerned about arm arch, where ttyX might not be meaningful.
It seems likely that the kernel has sane behavior, but I'd like to know
for sure.

For ARM, tty1 would mean no console output. Right now we configure the
ARM images to use the ARM serial console seperately anyway.

[Bug 1024475] [NEW] libnss-ldap causes boot hang on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise

2012-07-13 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

A configuration that works perfectly after setup prevents an Ubuntu
12.04 Precise client from booting.

Checks before rebooting:

1. winbind authentication is working (console login, xrdp, etc)
2. libnss-ldap name resolution is working (getent passwd)

(this is the intended setup)

After booting the default Grub option we see the machine hung without
printing anything.

Booting in recovery mode allows us to see that the last printed message
is:

Begin: Running /scrips/init-bottom ... done.

The problem IS related to libnss-ldap because if we boot via cdrom and
change nsswitch.conf to use local authentication the machine boots again
perfectly. We can then change it back to use local authentication + ldap
(compat ldap) and verify that it works. However the system won't come up
after rebooting.

Even though the nss_initgroups_ignoreusers is correctly setup there is
provavly some service that is trying to use ldap before networking is
available. The extra options (see below) intended to lower timeouts seem
to have no effect.

Configuration details:

[Bug 1024475] Re: libnss-ldap causes boot hang on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise

2012-07-13 Thread ghomem
Current workaround is changing the existing script /etc/init.d/libnss-
ldap to include:

[...]

case $1 in
start)
cp -f /etc/nsswitch.conf.ldap /etc/nsswitch.conf
;;
stop)
cp -f /etc/nsswitch.conf.local /etc/nsswitch.conf
;;

[...]

This will get you nss ldap working and no problems during reboot.

It's funny that this script is there to be used.

[Bug 1024326] Re: django_compressor is required for access to the dashboard

2012-07-13 Thread Gabriel Hurley
Yes, django_compressor is required for use of Horizon without
modification. It is the recommended deployment scenario. That said,
downstream distros have two options:

1. Add django compressor, node.js and LESS to their packaging
requirements,

2. Compile a static stylesheet and link that in the template instead of
using compressor, LESS, etc.

Both options are valid, and we'll do what we can to help support both.
But either way this isn't a Horizon bug. If there are questions feel
free to ask in the answers section or on the OpenStack mailing list.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Since the package referred to in this bug is in universe or
multiverse, it is community maintained. If you are able, I suggest
coordinating with upstream and posting a debdiff for this issue. When a
debdiff is available, members of the security team will review it and
publish the package. See the following link for more information:

[Bug 1021530] Re: update to include stable fixes for OVS 1.4

2012-07-13 Thread Aaron Rosen
Hi Adam,

It seems like this patch wasn't actually applied to the package you
provided?

 I downloaded openvswitch-datapath-source_1.4.0-1ubuntu1.1_all.deb
(http://ppa.launchpad.net/gandelman-a/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openvswitch
/openvswitch-datapath-source_1.4.0-1ubuntu1.1_all.deb) and navigated to
data.tar.gz-./usr/src/openvswitch-datapath.tar.bz2-/modules
/openvswitch-datapath/-openvswitch.tar.gz-openvswitch/lib/odp-util.h
and :

#define ODPUTIL_FLOW_KEY_BYTES 144
not
#define ODPUTIL_FLOW_KEY_BYTES 200

I also confirmed the same thing with the package built with debug
symbols.

Thanks,

Aaron

[Bug 967410] Re: Windows clients cannot connect to shared printers

2012-07-13 Thread David
En Español

Posible solución:

Comando a usar: rpcclient

---

In Ingles

Possible solution:

Command to use: rpcclient

You have to set the printer name

Type in the terminal server the following command without quotes:
rpcclient localhost

Asked the samba user's password that manages printers,

Can verify the name of the printer with the command, without the quotes
enumprinters 5

Example if the name of the shared printer is PDF2

After this step change the name of the printer with the command, without quotes
setprintername PDF2 PDF2

Go to a client machine, install the printer.

Well, I checked and it didn't seem to be working at all. I've prepped
the SRU but I'll upload the fix to Quantal next week and check it works
there first.

[Bug 668926] Re: can't resolve domain names starting with a dash (minus sign)

2012-07-13 Thread David Grossberg
I took a guess what package this might be. Please change it to the
correct one if wrong.

More tumblr and presumably other sites are going to be affected by this over
time. Following an old RFC that is obviously not being enforced at the server
end is Clearly the wrong behavior for the client. The sentiment behind RFC
1958 section 3.9 applies very well here:
Be strict when sending and tolerant when receiving.

[Bug 927515] Re: thunderbird uses excessive cpu power

2012-07-13 Thread David Henningsson
The strace log is a bit long to attach here, but under one minute of fetching
emails, it
 - calls gettimeofday about 200 000 times
 - trying to open different files in /usr/share/mime, 20 000 times
 - trying to open gedit.desktop in different directories, 1300 times

...is this really correct behaviour?

[Bug 1023953] Re: Ubuntu-drivers-common breaks PackageKit

2012-07-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Installing PackageKit instead of aptdaemon is going to break software
which expects the WhatProvides() and other plugins to work. We do not
currently have packaged software that does, so removing the Breaks: for
now should be okay.

If there are features missing in Aptcc, please implement them there,
so all applications using PK can rely on them.

I agree in principle, but I doubt it's a realistic goal. It would mean
to implement all the plugins twice, with the aptcc implementation taking
a lot more effort and getting very little testing (since the standard PK
API implementation in Ubuntu is currently aptdaemon).
