[Bug 1058987] [NEW] dnsmasq-base causes the root filesystem to not cleanly unmount at shutdown or reboot

2012-09-30 Thread Kevin Keijzer
Public bug reported:

Ever since some update in the Quantal pre-releases, having dnsmasq-base
installed will cause the root filesystem to not be properly unmounted on
shutdown and reboot. In case the Plymouth splash screen is disabled, the
message 'mount: / is busy' will be shown, but otherwise the user will
not even be aware of this problem.

After rebooting, the root filesystem needs recovery, as shown in dmesg:

kevin@vbox-xubuntu-quantal:~$ dmesg | grep EXT4
[1.022746] EXT4-fs (sda2): INFO: recovery required on readonly filesystem
[1.022750] EXT4-fs (sda2): write access will be enabled during recovery
[1.248294] EXT4-fs (sda2): recovery complete
[1.248661] EXT4-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts:
(null)
[1.456315] EXT4-fs (sda2): re-mounted. Opts: errors=remount-ro

Yet again, the user will not be aware of this until it is too late. The
only way to avoid this from happening (or at least what I've found) is
running 'sudo apt-get purge dnsmasq-base'. Sadly, this also removes
network-manager and network-manager-gnome, so it isn't really a viable
solution.

Another problem that might be related is that having an active
connection with the Network Manager prior to shutting down or rebooting,
will cause the process to hang for a few seconds, after which the
message about / being busy is shown. Stopping the network service (sudo
service networking stop) will solve the hanging, but not the unclean
unmount. So far, only purging dnsmasq-base seems to do that, which
obviously also solves the other problem, as Network Manager will then
also be removed.

Although I haven't experienced it yet, this could cause potential data
loss; especially for users without a seperate /home partition.

[Bug 1059272] [NEW] php5-fpm init.d script does not return when php5-fpm is started or stopped

2012-09-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Public bug reported:

Apport information is missing, because I am reporting this on a non-
networked location. I will pull apport information after I get the
system onto a networked area (installation was via a local repository on
a secured subnet of this area).

php5-fpm when using /etc/init.d/php5-fpm stop or /etc/init.d/php5-fpm
start, as well as when using 'service' similarly, does not report that
the php process was started or stopped. This makes server
administration a tad confusing. `pidof php5-fpm` shows it is running,
but there's no notification thereof that it was started or stopped (from
the start/stop script).

[Bug 1059272] Re: php5-fpm init.d script does not return when php5-fpm is started or stopped

2012-09-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Update: The 'restart' command does give output similar to this:

[orion]# service php5-fpm restart
 * Restarting PHP5 FastCGI Process Manager php5-fpm

I'd expect similar stuff for 'stop' and 'start' as well, saying Starting or
Stopping accordingly.

[Bug 1058540] Re: compiz crashes soon after startup

2012-09-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

extra information--
if i want to report a bug about the kernel using the command ubuntu-bug

ran it as root and it updated. Now Android developer tool doesn't work,

controlled by the graphics driver (and the application).

It works ok if you use sudo gnome-menus-blacklist so not a bug.

It is because /usr/share/gnome/applications is not user writeable as

[Bug 1058227] Re: Top menu bar flips to blue (background colour)

2012-09-30 Thread sampo555
I'm quite sure this problem was caused by the latest SRU as it contained
some backported fixes from Quantal where similar problems have been
observed (bug 1042024). And those problems have now started to occur in
Precise too.

Could you downgrade Unity to 5.14 and test if the problem was caused by
the Unity 5.16 SRU few weeks back?

To downgrade, download following packages:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/5.14.0-0ubuntu1/+build/3676768/+files/libunity-core-5.0-5_5.14.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/5.14.0-0ubuntu1/+build/3676768/+files/unity-common_5.14.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/5.14.0-0ubuntu1/+build/3676768/+files/unity-services_5.14.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/5.14.0-0ubuntu1/+build/3676768/+files/unity_5.14.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

Open terminal and go to the directory you downloaded those packages to (for
example if you put them to Downloads run following):
cd Downloads

Then run
sudo dpkg -i *unity*.deb
unity --replace

If the problem is gone, it's definitely caused by the latest SRU.

When done, run following command to install the latest Unity:
sudo apt-get install unity unity-services libunity-core-5.0-5 unity-common

[Bug 1055006] Re: Ubuntu 12.10 beta 1 amd64 installer hanging during boot.

2012-09-30 Thread Ankit Saini
I downloaded the latest daily build as of 30 September and the installer hanged
again while booting.
These were the last three lines printed on the console:

Stopping save kernel messages [Ok]
Starting restore sound card(s') mixer state(s)[Fail]
Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [Ok]

The installer hanger after that.

There doesn't seem to be a way to record the boot log so that I can give
you the log to see.

[Bug 868904] Re: Redshift fails to start with session due to geoclue failure

2012-09-30 Thread Prasanna K
Above mentioned work around works without active internet connection.
i.e, redshift doesn't go looking for geolocations if you use this
workaround.

But if we tuse terminal and use command : $ redshift
(it shows)

** (process:3248): WARNING **: Metadata for error domain geoclue-error-
quark already registered

Started Geoclue provider `Geoclue Master'.
Using provider `geoclue'.
Could not get location (3 retries left): Geoclue master client has no usable
Position providers.
Unable to get location from provider.

But when you type command $ gtk-redshift -l LAT:LONG (Where LAT and LONG
correspond with your coordinates.)
it runs soomthly as send in the above question. Hence forth a startup
application is created using this command.

By the way when you click ApplicationsAccessoriesRedshift it works
through geolocation and needs a active internet connection every time
where as the little workout in http://askubuntu.com/questions/194525
/does-redshift-need-active-internet-connection-to-work/194582#194582
helps the otherway by mannually creating the geolocation.

[Bug 1058927] [NEW] Cannot change keyboard layout in Gnome Shell

2012-09-30 Thread Žygimantas Beručka
Public bug reported:

There is no way to change keyboard layout in GNOME except by going to
System Settings since no keyboard layout indicator is shown in Gnome
Shell.

I saw Jeremy Bicha commenting at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12263229postcount=17 that it's
because the new Ibus thing is missing and is 'very unlikely' to be
shipped with Quantal.

If this is the case, I propose to make it available at least in the
GNOME3 PPA as soon as possible. Without doing that it would severely
damage user experience, as using different languages is one of those
bare basic tasks the user would expect even a Windows 95 capable
computer to let him do. Not to mention that it would negatively impact
the Ubuntu GNOME Remix edition which would fail to deliver a working
GNOME 3.6 from the outset.

[Bug 6290] Re: DV capture over Firewire is broken (no rights for /dev/raw1394)

2012-09-30 Thread Eric Wright
Kino isn't the only important one that is broken by a lack of a
thoughtful fix.

VLC is also affected for people like myself that NEED to be able to
stream LIVE video from a professional DV camera over a wireless network,
and finally export it several miles away at a television transmitter
site for our viewers to watch.

This morning I was supposed to broadcast a parade from 5 miles away... I
started on this problem at 4AM and missed the 9AM parade start.

Just because a person CAN kill others with an automobile does not mean
we should all have our cars taken away for everyone else's safety
and along the same lines raw1394 access that WAS working perfect before,
should be allowed back.

Instead give users a security panel where they can check a box to
disable raw1394 if they have no use for it, and they can leave it
unchecked if they NEED full access.

I am writing this post because there is little else I can do, but I had
to do SOMETHING My job at a television station depends on my being
able to live stream an 8Mb/s stream from a DV camera any time there is a
parade, breaking news story, or other reason to require high quality
live video to be transmitted from all points across town...

Our station does not have the $300,000 for a microwave truck and
astronomical yearly fees for the satellite link... I am forced to use 2
watt radios on empty 802.11 channels, employing 4 degree beam width mesh
antennas, to avoid disrupting other people's wireless connections.
There's no way our viewers would stand for USB web cam video without
laughing us off the air.

I can technically do it in Windows... but Windows is not stable enough
to trust for parade, rodeo, job fairs, auto racing, and other long
duration live broadcasts.

Please don't break my ability to stream high quality video with VLC
running on a laptop in a backpack for a 20Lb solution that includes the
camera and everything in a portable package

Or I should say, it's already broken... please return the functionality
removed

If the VLC team needs to help work out a suitable driver, please do work
with them... I am pretty sure they are open to assistance making this
work as well.

Thank you for your time,
Eric

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-09-30 Thread Žygimantas Beručka
I'd like to object against tagging it's importance as 'Low.' Changing
layouts, you know, it's some UX basics that should 'just work' in the
21st century. I use at least 4 layouts (the current limit on Ubuntu)
daily, switching between them back and forth, and needless to say this
is _very_ inconvenient for me and many other users, I believe. As is the
option to wait another 7 months (!) at the very least until this is
resolved.

I understand that it's late in the cycle, but it's not a LTS release
after all, so something should be done about that.

2012-09-30 Thread Graham Inggs
** Description changed:

+ [FFe] Please consider the patch attached to comment #3 of LP: #1026640
+ for a Feature Freeze exception.
+
+ [IMPACT]
+ Libmotif3 has been replaced in the repositories by libmotif4 which is binary
compatible with the older version.
+ However, libmotif4 does not include the required symlinks.
+
+ [Test Cases]
+ The archive attached to comment #4 of LP: #1026640 contains executables
Xmtest-libmotif3-i386, Xmtest-libmotif4-i386, Xmtest-libmotif3-amd64 and
Xmtest-libmotif3-amd64.
+
+ Install package libmotif4 and verify that both Xmtest-libmotif3-* and
+ Xmtest-libmotif4-*, as appropriate for your architecture, are able to be
+ executed.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Minimal: this change applies to additional library symlinks.

[Bug 796006] Re: Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.3.4 tethering does not work any longer

2012-09-30 Thread Nabil BOUDERBALA
Hi Herton,
Please propose the patch, as you said above, and I will test it and let you
know the result.
If it is already in -proposed, please inform me about how can I apply it
because this situation is new to me.
Thank you,

PS: I can't upgrade to Precise because I use gretl and other apps which
aren't yet supported in this version, and above all I like natty so
much!

[Bug 310895] Re: No display manager entry for Motif Window Manager session

2012-09-30 Thread Graham Inggs
** Description changed:

+ [FFe] Please consider the patch attached to comment #3 of LP: #1026640
+ for a Feature Freeze exception.
+
+ [IMPACT]
+ Users of the motif-clients package have no easy way to select the Motif
Window Manager (MWM) included in this package.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Install packages libmotif4 and motif-clients. Log out, then at the display
manager log in screen, verify that there is now an option for 'Motif Window
Manager' and that you can log in after selecting it. You should see an empty
desktop. Right-click causes a popup menu with 'New Window' and 'Quit...'
options to appear.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Minimal: only the file /usr/share/xsessions/mwm.desktop is added.
+
+
---
+
After installing motif-clients package that includes mwm window manager,
it is very difficult to switch to use this WM, since GDM login screen
  does not include corresponding entry.

See also this discussion for a workaround and proposed fix:

Re: [Bug 1027421] Re: Package manager broken Ubuntu 12.10

2012-09-30 Thread Charles Norrie
Sometime, possibly when going from Alpha 2 to Beta 1 of 12:10, the issue
must have been picked up for the package manager now works. I always work
with the tatest development edition, because I like to follow the leading
edge of a new offering, but I run the risk of this sort of issue - namely
something quite serious gets broken. So in future I shall always work with
the release version of the preceding version as a back up. I regard the
unstable development edition of the latest Ubuntu as safer to use than the
most venerable offerings of the Gaesware Empire. I can take the risk
becuase I use Ubuntu for my own private purposes and I can bear the risk of
some failure.

[Bug 129041] Re: xterm icon available by default

2012-09-30 Thread Everaldo Canuto
Also, on package gnome-menus we have gnome-menus-blacklist utility that
hide these icons listed on /etc/gnome/menus.blacklist. Unfortunatelly it
is commented on post installation script.

[Bug 1019347] Re: A message: mount: / is busy appears every time shutting down or rebooting.

2012-09-30 Thread Kevin Keijzer
I guess I'll just have to try to find this the old-fashioned way. I'll
do a minimal netinstall in VirtualBox and build up the operating system
one by one, keep rebooting in the meanwhile and wait until the problem
starts to occur. Hopefully I can then at least find the offending
package, so we can work from there.

[Bug 1058944] [NEW] FFe: Sync altos 1.1.1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2012-09-30 Thread Micah Gersten
Public bug reported:

Please sync altos 1.1.1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Depend on default-jdk instead of openjdk-6-jdk, so that the configure
script can find the JDK.

Fixed in 1.1-1

Explanation of FeatureFreeze exception:
Fixes FTBFS:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/test-rebuild-20120922/+build/3806438
Gets us back in sync as well
Leaf package
more than 10 days in unstable
unseeded

Changelog entries since current quantal version 1.0.3ubuntu1:

altos (1.1.1-1) unstable; urgency=low
  * new upstream bug-fix release
- fix flight data deletion problem affecting TeleMetrum v1.0 boards only
- fix broken Google Earth export from on-board flight data (.eeprom) files
- fix units displayed on Landed tab in UI to honor imperial units flag
- display both range to the rocket and ground distance in Descent tab
- fix bug in sensor data display for TeleMini in Monitor Idle mode

altos (1.1-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * new upstream minor release, which provides a few new features in AltosUI
and the AltOS firmware, and fixes bugs
- Add apogee-lockout value. Overrides the apogee detection logic to
prevent incorrect apogee charge firing. A configuration menu
provides a list of reasonable values, or the value can be set by hand.
- Fix a bug where the data reported in telemetry packets was from
  320ms ago.
- Force the radio frequency to 434.550MHz when the debug clock
pin is connected to ground at boot time. This provides a way
to talk to a TeleMini which is configured to some unknown frequency.
- Provide RSSI values for Monitor Idle mode. This makes it easy to check
radio range without needing to go to flight mode.
- Fix a bug which caused the old received telemetry packets to
be retransmitted over the USB link when the radio was turned
  off and back on.
- Fix a bug that caused GPS ready to happen too quickly. The
software was using every telemetry packet to signal new GPS
data, which caused GPS ready to be signalled after 10 packets
  instead of 10 GPS updates.
- Fix Google Earth data export to work with recent versions. The
google earth file loading code got a lot pickier, requiring
some minor white space changes in the export code.
- Make the look-n-feel configurable, providing a choice from
  the available options.
- Add an 'Age' element to mark how long since a telemetry packet
has been received. Useful to quickly gauge whether
communications with the rocket are still active.
- Add 'Configure Ground Station' dialog to set the radio
frequency used by a particular TeleDongle without having to go
  through the flight monitor UI.
- Re-compute time spent in each state for the flight graph; this
figures out the actual boost and landing times instead of
using the conservative values provide by the flight
electronics. This improves the accuracy of the boost
acceleration and main descent rate computations.
- Make AltosUI run on Mac OS Lion. The default Java heap space
was dramatically reduced for this release causing much of the
UI to fail randomly. This most often affected the satellite
  mapping download and displays.
- Change how data are displayed in the 'table' tab of the flight
monitoring window. This eliminates entries duplicated from the
header and adds both current altitude and pad altitude, which
are useful in 'Monitor Idle' mode.
- Add Imperial units mode to present data in feet instead of
  * update build-deps to use cc intead of sdcc, closes: #676739
  * update build-deps to use default-jdk, closes: #655580
